We are SO excited to share this fascinating chat with our favourite chef and cookery writer Gizzi Erskine with you all this week, getting into everything from naked dinner parties to psychedelics, via public shaming, misogyny and body image. Author of killer books from Gizzi's Healthy Appetite to Slow and Restore, you might recognise Gizzi from her various TV appearances over the years, or perhaps from her lockdown fakeway brand with Professor Green, Giz and Greens. She's a proper celeb chef and a pop culture icon, writing regularly for the Independent and as a London party scene fave, with a whole host of famous friends and fascinating insight into that world. Gizzi talks incredibly honestly about how her extreme ADHD and cyclothymic disorder made life feel like utter “chaos” for decades, and how she's since come through the other side, after addiction, losing all five of her businesses last year and hitting financial rock bottom. Ever the optimist, Gizzi reveals all the ways she's been putting her life back together, from experimenting with different mushrooms, to settling down in Brighton. And, of course, her must-try restaurants in the UK! Enjoy huns, don't forget to leave a review, and shoot us a DM with your thoughts on the episode @straightuppod on Insta. You may think a signature dish or culinary theme are all a food and beverage business need to develop a strong identity. But in reality, the meals served at our favourite eateries are one of many factors contributing a complex branding strategy. Food, lighting, interior design, menu layout; these and many other elements combined are what create immersive and memorable experiences for customers. And as newer and increasingly sophisticated technology continues to develop, we're seeing more of them make their way into restaurant spaces. In this episode of Beyond Retail, we analyse the role design plays in the food and beverage space to understand how it impacts consumer experiences in cafeterias, fast food establishments, high-end restaurants and more. We examine the technologies reimagining how brands deliver convenience, and dive into what makes for great restaurant design. We speak with Adyen's VP of Product, Derk Busser to learn how F&B has evolved over the years, and hear from Harry Ridley, Automation & Emerging Technology Product Manager at Compass Group, on how brands can pick the right tech for their business. We also gain a deeper understanding of the technology-space relationship with Sergii Khomenko, co-founder of Autocanteen, while chef and broadcaster Gizzi Erskine shares her own restaurant design experience. Plus, David Carofano, Director of Strategy & Development for hospitality design studio Crown Creative, tells us how businesses can reinforce their brand through aesthetic choices. If you want to find out more about technology and behavioural trends, visit Adyen.com/en_GB/ for more.
The food and beverage space isn't what it once was – it's much, much better. Even before the pandemic, restaurants, bars and cafes were on a steady march towards modernisation. Takeaway apps were making it possible for restaurants of all shapes and sizes to deliver to customers, and new technologies like QR codes were slowly making their mark on the user journey. But then the pandemic hit, and businesses went into overdrive. To stay open, they had to think fast to meet customer needs as expectations and regulations rapidly shifted. Ordering ahead, digital wallet payments, self-service kiosks – new technologies had burst onto the scene, permanently changing the face of the industry. In this season of Beyond Retail we explore the world of food and beverage to understand how this sector has evolved, and discover the challenges and opportunities that continue to shape its future. In this episode, we look from past to present at the immense change F&B has undertaken. We speak with Adyen's Head of Unified Commerce, Brian Dammeir about the parallels between food and beverage and retail, and we hear from Marketing Director for Just Eat for Business, Shane Mansfield to look back at the evolution of delivery over the years. Plus, we get a restauranteur's perspective on all this change with the help of chef, broadcaster, and award-winning food writer, Gizzi Erskine. If you want to find out more about the technology and behavioural trends influencing food and beverage retail, visit adyen.com/en_GB for more.

Top chef, style icon, entrepreneur, bon vivant, domestic goddess, renegade, influencer, and / or, er, did we mention top chef? Gizzi Erskine has worn many hats, not always of her own choosing. But one thing is without doubt: she knows her food, and she knows how to cook it darn well. Here she talks to Simon about raising her little sister, piercing bodies in Camden, learning how to 'take care' of meat at one of London's best restaurants, pop-ups, organic pizza, the delights of offal and the eating habits of the Zambezi river shark - obviously. Rest assured, never a dull moment in this one! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

New Year, New Diet? With campaigns like Veganuary encouraging us to ditch certain foods at every turn, many of us are committing to getting fitter by eating “healthier” but how long does that last? If you can only keep it going for a couple of weeks, you are not alone. A study found that last year many people could not stick to the new diet for longer than a few weeks. This week on Over The Farm Gate, renowned chef, presenter, food campaigner, and author, Gizzi Erskine joins us to discuss her new book ‘Restore: A Modern Guide to Sustainable Eating' which looks at the intrinsic relationship between food and the planet, particularly the value of soil and livestock's role in improving organic matter. Gizzi recently teamed up with Yeo Valley Organic to investigate the real carbon footprint of food, explore why British agriculture is some of the most sustainable in the world, and understand the nutritional benefits of a truly balanced diet. Your New Year diet doesn't have to mean ditching red meat and dairy. British farmers are taking the lead in producing sustainable food that is kind to animals and the environment.Linkshttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Restore-Gizzi-Erskine/dp/0008375690/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this conversation I chat to writer/director/performer/producer, Heydon Prowse (https://www.twitter.com/HeydonProwse).Heydon began his career creating hidden camera political stunts with the viral creative agency Don't Panic. Many of these videos gained international press coverage. This led to the BBC3 show 'The Revolution Will Be Televised,' which Heydon co-wrote and co-starred in with Jolyion Rubenstein. The show went on to win a BAFTA, a Rose d’Or and a Broadcast Award over three seasons. Other TV shows include Democracy Dealers on BBC3, Revolting on BBC2 and The Ministry of Justice on Channel 4. As well as directing documentaries for the likes of Vice and The Guardian, Heydon also hosted and wrote the BBC2 documentary called The Town That Took on The Taxman. He most recently created the Spotify podcast series Sex, Lies & DM Slides, featuring Gizzi Erskine and Sydney Lima.Heydon breaks down how he got into making hidden camera political stunts on YouTube with Don’t Panic. He describes what it was like outing MPs, who lost their jobs as a result of his stunts and the anxiety that came with dealing with the online aftermath. Heydon talks about the anxiety that came with being behind illegal stunts that could have imprisoned him and the crash that comes after filming such highly adrenalized productions. He explains why he felt it was unwise to loose skills in producing and directing, as he became more front of camera talent. We talk about dealing with imposters syndrome and this idea of being an introverted performer. We discuss how social media has made comedy more of level but the curse that also comes democratising content. Heydon describes the struggles of pitching to commissioners and how The Revolution Will Be Televised got made. Why he has decided to focus on creating mainstream entertainment content and how the Spotify series 'Sex Lies and DM slides' came about.Heydon explains the strength in being part of a network and the opportunities that arise as a result, why it’s not necessary to have an agent anymore and why creating content is only 10% of what leads to eventual success. He reveals what strategies he used to create viral videos and why he wears so many creative hats. We talk about this idea of constructive procrastination, the challenge with writing scripts on spec, the importance in toughening up as an artist and loads more!If you like this episode please do rate and review the podcast on Apple.Happy listening :)Steve - @offkeysteve See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Jamila Rizvi and Astrid Edwards are back with Season 2 of Anonymous Was A Woman. Chapter 1: First up, Jamila and Astrid consider the idea of solitude and creativity in 2020. Chapter 2: Jamila and Astrid take a look back at Virginia’s Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own (a quote from which serves as the name of the podcast). Chapter 3: Staying with the idea of creativity in solitude, Astrid looks forward to the release of Fire, Flood and Plague (an Australian anthology edited by Sophie Cunningham), with excerpts currently published in The Guardian. Jamila introduces Together in a Sudden Strangeness (a poetry anthology edited by Alice Quinn in the United States). Recommendations: Astrid recommends The Life to Come by Michelle de Kretser. Jamila is currently cooking non-stop and recommends Yotam Ottolenghi’s Flavour, Gizzi Erskine’s Slow: Food worth taking time over and Sami Tamimi’s Falastin: A cookbook. Rosemary Ferguson's career started in the rather inauspicious setting of McDonald's on Oxford Street, where she was spotted by Corinne Day (yep, the very same Corinne Day who took those famous early photos of Kate Moss, so clearly she had a very good eye). She went on to become part of the famous wave of British models living in New York who carved out a new, more pared back look following the excesses of the '80s. After having three children and deciding to live back in the UK, Rosemary went to the College of Naturopathic Medicine to train as a naturopath and nutritionist. Now, she runs a clinic on Harley Street, is the co-founder along with Gizzi Erskine of the food brand Filth, and founded the 5 Day Plan. In this episode, Rosemary talks us through her story, as well as mentioning the products she loves and has used over the years. Here are the products Rosemary mentions:- Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers- Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser- Filth- 5 Day Plan - Burberry Fresh Glow BB Cream- Orveda Sincare- RMS Living Luminizer- Charlotte Tilbury Unisex Healthy Glow- Maybelline Great Lash Mascara- Votary Super Seed Facial Oil - Romilly Wilde Skincare- Creme de la Mer- Viviscal- John Masters HaircareBeauty Full Lives is hosted by Madeleine Spencer, produced by Charlie Jones, and with artwork by Sung Lee. Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 235 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A celebration of good, honest home cooking right here this week as Pip is joined by the marvellous chef and author GIZZI ERSKINE!Absolutely great from the beginning, this chat with Gizzi is a full on entertaining and buzzy one with so much packed into the hour-ish run time! You wouldn’t have known she was hungover if she hadn’t have mentioned it, as she rattles through so many entertaining and interesting talking points about her own life and all things cookery, ranging from her Paddington beginnings, growing up in an aristocratic but less than well-off family with not a ton of parental guidance, her bodypiercing route and how she could have even gone on a completely art-based route, the death of her father in her early years but how she never used this as an excuse for going off the rails temporarily as a young’un, being ADHD but locking in and focusing, how she operates with such a busy brain, being her mum’s cookery sidekick and how traveling broadened her culinary palate, her family’s spiritual side, ill-informed people giving advice on social media, the demonisation of eating habits, body image and shaming, her entirely reasonable snubbing of the GQ awards and cooking technique over speed. How this much was crammed into a pretty short chat is a miracle but it’s just gripping throughout. Enjoy your time in Gizzi’s amazing world!• QUICK NOTE! I mentioned it in the intro but the episode is a touch on the reverby side. The environment was more reflective than originally realised, but your ears do adjust and you can hear everything - just a little warning that's all in case you notice a strange quality to the sound! I cleaned it up as far as I could but any more would have made it hard to listen to. On top of that – she also has a new book coming out. Slow, of which Gizzi says is the best she's ever written. Of her cooking Gizzi has said: "Domestic goddesses have their place, but I’m a professional cook, plus, I’m not domestic at all – my house looks like a bomb’s hit it." If you’re listening and have been enjoying desert island dishes – please do take 30 seconds just to leave a 5* rating and a little review as it really makes the world of difference and helps other people to find the podcast which is always exciting! Come and find me on Instagram @margienomura where you can probably find me cooking something for a fridge forage or a quick one pot wonder. I’m working hard on my website at the moment and I’m excited to show you but in the meantime thee are lots of easy, delicious recipe ideas on there including the recipe that was inspired by Gizzi. The website is www.desertislanddishes.co . Thank you for listening! x Byee
