Julia Reichert's death from cancer on December 1 at the age of 76 made headlines across the country. Most of them called her an “Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker” and that was certainly true: she was a four-time Academy Award-nominated director, for 1977's Union Maids, Seeing Red: Stories of American Communists in 1984, The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant in 2010 and American Factory, for which she won an Oscar in 2020. But we thought Julia would have really got a kick out of The New York Times, which called her “Documentarian of the Working Class.” Back in 2020, Julia talked with 9 to 5 co-founder Karen Nussbaum about how her working-class upbringing informed her work as much as her left politics; she offered advice for chronicling the pandemic, and told what it was like to give her acceptance speech at the Academy Awards that year. The interview, originally published in The American Prospect in April 2020, ran in two parts on the Labor History Today podcast; you can hear the first part here today on Labor Goes to the Movies, and the second part will run in this Sunday's Labor History Today podcast. In the 18th century, rabbits were considered pests and generally despised. In The Favourite, Queen Anne has 17 pet rabbits and two maids, each determined to one-up the other and become the queen's favorite (favourite). The Favourite is a dark comedy and a semi deconstruction of the classic period piece. It favors (favours) whip pans and fisheye lenses and doubles down on anachronisms like 21st century hip-hop dancing in the ballroom. By the end we were left with many questions and thoughts, and a real take you'll hear is that The Favourite is The Green Book of queer cinema. It's also a stealth double feature! On the last bit of the episode, Cam and Travis recommend the documentary American Factory (2019), in which a Chinese company moves into a shuttered GM Plant in Ohio, creating not just hundreds of new jobs, but a clash of cultures. We both thought the documentary did a great job of portraying the comedy that results when two wildly different cultures of work and labor are brought together under a bumbling management. For this second episode of our current season we try something new with a look back at an important film from the past, Barbara Kopple’s 1976 Harlan County U.S.A., which won the 1977 Best Documentary Oscar. Why this trip down docu-memory lane? Two reasons: 1) our guest host this week is actually a guest historian, Betsy McLane, who not only knows just about everything there is to know about documentary history, but also knows quite a lot about Kopple; and 2) the coal miners of Harlan County, Kentucky, are once again on strike, gaining national and international attention over the summer. Plus ça change … And while we’re on the topic of great films about unions, we thought we’d also play a recent interview Chris did with directors Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert of American Factory, just recently released on Netflix, which tells the story of what happens when a Chinese glass company takes over an abandoned GM plant. It starts out so well, but then, well … you’ll just have to listen to our podcast and then watch the movie. Enjoy! Group Review Documentary: HARLAN COUNTY U.S.A. GM Plant Closing, Plant Opening - Ignite Your Purpose #IYP There has been much talk of the GM plant closing in Canada and the USA, one of those plants is in an area where I grew up and I know a lot of people and family members whom have been affected by this. One of my friends even sent me an independent interview that was done with a bunch of the laid pf workers as they left work for the last time. I have to admit some of the stories were heart breaking. Now from an awareness stand point I watched how I reacted and felt after watching something like that; contracted, fearful, lost, hopeless, powerless are all words that came to mind. However; Check this, the same friend sent me an interview with Elon Musk an innovator, an entrepenure, a trend setter, a trail blazer. He said maybe just maybe we would want to use all those factories. Now now this may or may not happen. However again when I paid attention to how I felt is was amazing, I was open, happy, excited, alive, endless possibilities. It got me to thinking if we are always relying on someone or something else we can fell hopeless or not in control of our own destiny. In this episode we shine some light on the situation and walk you through our thought process on it. As always we talk about our week in real estate and how we've been finding the market, current dealings etc.. We also touch on external factors affecting real estate (ex.
