Is Sex and the City a feminist text? That's the question we sort of attempt to answer in this episode, but ultimately we find it more interesting to talk about Sabrina Carpenter's 2025 album Man's Best Friend and the 2009 romcom film He's Just Not That Into You starring Ginnifer Goodwin. Our rambles meander through discussions of how male characters are written on SATC, and how the show explores the assumed gender binary in general, before detouring through more current works of media that are often brought into feminist discourse, like the aforementioned Man's Best Friend, and the 2023 film Barbie. Can a work of fiction BE inherently feminist? Or can it merely propose ideas or messages that the viewer must consume critically and form their own conclusions? If you are still following us on Instagram, thank you for believing in us.

I'd Rather Be Reading
Emily Giffin on Her Most Courageous Novel Yet, The Summer Pact

I'd Rather Be Reading

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 9, 2024 52:14

When it comes to dream I'd Rather Be Reading guests—I'm talking about names at the top of the vision board—Emily Giffin would be right there at the apex. Yes, this is a nonfiction books podcast, but I do read fiction from time to time, and one fiction author whose books I never miss is Emily Giffin, my No. 1 favorite fiction writer of all time. I actually met Emily at a book signing in the summer of 2016 in Nashville—at Draper James, Reese Witherspoon's boutique—and Emily changed my life. At that time, I was freelance writing some, but hadn't yet taken the leap to become a full-time writer. During the book signing, I mentioned something about wanting to be a writer to Emily, and even though lines at book signings move pretty quickly, she took a moment to give me words of wisdom I never forgot—and signed my book and told me to not give up and to keep writing. The next year, 2017, I became a full-time writer, and am now a senior editor at a major fashion magazine as we speak here in 2024. It's really incredible what one inspiring encounter can do—and Emily, I loved you before meeting you in 2016, and I loved you even more after. Actually, I'll get to see Emily again in person this week, at a book signing in Atlanta for Emily's latest, The Summer Pact, her twelfth novel—which is the book we're talking about on the show today. The title of the book is so powerful, and not at all what I was expecting. Emily's latest is full of so many plot twists, and, while many of her books focus on love and romance, the crux of this book is friendship—although, don't get me wrong, there's still definitely some love and romance in here. As I tell Emily in our conversation, I think The Summer Pact is her bravest and most courageous work; she tackles some heavy-hitting topics here, topics she's never tackled before in any of her books prior. In this book we meet Lainey, Tyson, Summer, and Hannah, who all arrive at college from completely different worlds. They soon become a tight group of friends, but, as graduation nears, tragedy strikes, and they make a promise to one another in that moment to always be there for each other, no matter how much distance or circumstance separates them. Then, a decade later, life turns upside down for one of our characters. She calls in her closest friends, who are all in the midst of their own crossroads. But they made a promise, and they all come together to embark on a shared journey of self-discovery, forgiveness, and acceptance, with, as I said, so many twists and turns along the way, including a trip to Capri, Italy, which has risen to the top of my travel bucket list. Just like I had a different career before I became a full-time writer, so did Emily—after graduating from Wake Forest and the University of Virginia School of Law, Emily was a practicing attorney for several years before moving to London to write full-time. Since then, 12 novels followed—Something Borrowed, which was turned into a feature film with Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson; Something Blue; Baby Proof; Love the One You're With; Heart of the Matter; Where We Belong; The One and Only; First Comes Love; All We Ever Wanted; The Lies That Bind; Meant to Be; and, now, The Summer Pact. I am such a fan, and I can't wait for you to hear our conversation.   The Summer Pact by Emily Giffin

Tread Perilously's werewolf-themed horror month continues with an episode of Once Upon a Time called "Red Handed." As Emma contends with the possibility that David caused Kathryn's disappearance, Ruby and Granny have a fight -- and Ruby quits the dinner. She's taken in by Mary Margaret and Emma, with the latter giving her a job at the sheriff's office. Will her superb tracking skills help them find David, who's gone missing the forest, and Kathryn? Meanwhile, in Fairytale Land, Snow encounters Red, who yearns to leave her village despite constant wolf attacks and her grandmother's insistence she remain at home. Will Snow learn the truth before another hunting party engages with the wolf? Justin admits this is his favorite episode of Once -- although he and Erik dissect why the show stopped working the way it did in its second season. Erik is surprised to see the script is credited to Jane Espenson. Justin tries to place Once in the context of television at the time of its debut. Comic books end up being modern fairy tales in a very real way.  In The Company of Wolves references are spotted. Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Meghan Ory all prove to be MVPs. The pair recommit to their anti-Wolverine rhetoric and Justin fails to recall Peter and the Wolf with any great detail.

In this Rant/Rave episode, Conor and Caroline go down the rabbit hole into the Disney characters that are worthy (or unworthy) of icon status. Has Caroline gone mad by claiming Alice of Alice in Wonderland is too unlikeable to be such a noteworthy Disney symbol? And would you agree with Conor that Zootopia's Judy Hopps does not get the recognition she deserves as the complex, modern hero? Here's some very good advice: don't be late to this episode!DISCLAIMER: While Judy Hopps is a fictional character, we acknowledge that her role as a police officer is representative of modern policing. Although her character may hope for a more understanding and different approach to law enforcement, in our world we are not there yet. Black and Brown people continue to suffer senseless deaths at the hands of police and a broken, racist system. Quick! What would you do if you were secretly in love with your horrible best friend's fiancee for years and never told him, but then he told you he was also in love with you for years and never told you, but he seems to have no real interest in figuring out what he wants to do and his wedding is quickly approaching and also Jim Halpert keeps yelling at you? If your answer was "dither for weeks while indulging in flashbacks and refusing to make any of your own choices," then congratulations, you're as well-equipped as the idiots in this movie are. It's a sunny piece of crap, to be sure, but a fascinatingly inept one ripe for discussion and improvement! Dream of your own doomed wedding as we discuss the stupid stupid characters and the various ways this plot could go whilst throwing down frozen margaritas to end our Summer of Margs. PUSH IT!
