Dr. Dana Cohen joins us today as we're digging into water and why staying hydrated matters for fertility. I remember feeling so busy that I didn't even have time to take a pee break (and when I did I wanted to pee faster). Yes, I've worked on my impatience. Looking back I know that I was chronically dehydrated. I thought it was normal to only urinate 1-2 times per day. Turns out that being properly hydrated is crucial for your health and fertility. After all staying hydrated helps with cervical mucus (which is needed for the sperm to get to the egg). Now I always have water with me wherever I go (filtered of course) and I love how it makes me feel (and yes it's perfectly okay to stop for a pee break). Today I'm welcoming Dr. Dana Cohen. She is an internal medicine doctor who has spent her career focusing on integrative medicine. She is the co-author of Quench - Beat Fatigue, Drop Weight, and Heal Your Body Through the New Science of Optimum Hydration In this episode you'll learn: 1) The signs and symptoms of dehydration 2) How much water you need to drink (we bust the myth of 8 glasses/per day) 3) Top kitchen hacks to ensure you stay hydrated 4) The truth about salt and why you may need to add it to your water 5) Water filter tips, what many of us get wrong about drinking water and more ---- TIMESTAMPS: 07:14- INTRO TO TODAY'S EPISODE AND DR. Headaches can be a fact of life during menopause. The pain can sometimes get quite debilitating and we search for a solution--any solution to relieve it. The problem with any quick fix is that while it can provide temporary relief, it rarely addresses the root cause of the suffering. However, when we truly take the time to tune in to our bodies, we may find that these kinds of pains are the body's signal that it needs and wants something from us. This is a return visit to the podcast for my guest Dr. Michelle Veneziano. She was also a guest in our 79th episode The Healing Power of the Tongue. I highly suggest that you tune in to that episode first if you haven't heard it yet as the things we discuss here are related to that one. We covered a lot of things in this podcast like the reason there is suffering and why it's important to listen to our bodies when it is going through pain. It also gets even more interesting as we discuss the reason behind developing a spiritual practice to get our bodies into a rhythm. She also shares the role that magnesium and water play in headaches. Listen to this episode today! What's Discussed in This Episode: 0:00 Introduction and Opportunity 4:53 Osteopathic medicine vs. Allopathic medicine 7:54 Menopause is an essential shift in life 9:36 What most women are missing out during menopause 12:47 Dr. Veneziano's recommendations for headaches 17:13 The role of the tongue in moving the cranium sacrum yourself 18:56 What spiritual practice does in getting the body into a rhythm 19:27 Entrainment experience 20:31 Why there is suffering 21:41 Stepping back to become an observer 24:10 The power of gratitude 24:55 Seeking the help of a craniosacral osteopath 26:56 Pain tells us that our body needs something 27:52 Connecting and following the heart 28:08 How to connect to the heart 29:53 Find the good in your life 32:55 Starting a mindfulness practice 34:28 Training ourselves to feel 35:32 Continuum movement 38:16 Menopause is a time of rediscovery 43:20 The role of water and magnesium in headaches 48:34 Benefits of hydration 50:12 1 tip to help those who are suffering from migraines About the Guest: Michelle Veneziano is a family physician and clinical professor who specializes in non-surgical orthopedics. Did you know that even scrolling through your cell phone is dehydrating? There are 2 reasons for this. First we have to manufacture a new round of neuro-chemicals, using up hydration, every time we focus. Second, if your head is down and tipped forward, that added pressure on your neck means the synovial fluid, passing to your brain from your spinal cord canal is compressed and is slowed in its flow. We can survive for weeks without food, but we would not survive beyond seven days without water. Our organs and bodily systems would shut down. And, if we drink too much water, we could be flushing out valuable electrolytes, vital minerals and nutrients. Today I spoke with Dr. Dana Cohen, who has been practicing integrative medicine for the last 20 years in Manhattan. She is a nationally renowned internal and integrative medicine specialist whose multi-disciplinary approach has helped treat thousands of patients using a variety of conventional and complementary therapies. She has co-authored QUENCH: Beat Fatigue, Drop Weight, and Heal Your Body Through the New Science of Optimum Hydration with cultural anthropologist Gina Bria. Today we talk about the myths and truths about hydration, and what you could be doing about it! Tom Brady wrote that he drank 'half his body weight in ounces of water each day, and double that amount when exercising. ' Which is about 2.3 gallons just while exercising! We’ll also talk about what OVERHYDRATION is doing to your body! In this Episode: Where did 8 glasses a day idea even come from? Ice, liquid, and vapor: what is the FOURTH stage of water that we’re missing? WHAT DOES your poop, pee, and sweat have to do with your hydration and why is clear pee WORSE? The BIGGEST threat to our water supply Hacks for Optimal Hydration: Just because you might drink 8 glasses of water per day, does not mean your body is hydrated! Here are 4 ways to hack your hydration: Hack 1 - Drink 16 oz. of water first thing in the morning with salt (Real Salt, Celtic Salt or Himalayan Sea salt) with lemon. Hack 2 - Afternoon fatigue is #1 sign you’re dehydrated. Drink a green smoothie in the afternoon instead of coffee, but be careful with how much sugar! Hack 3 - Suck on chia seeds while exercising, this is something even elite distance runners do! Hack 4 - Movement is a hydrating act. Move your joints to lubricate them! What water SHOULD you be drinking? In this video I answer all of your drinking water questions. You'll learn why Pur, Brita and bottled water is costing you money and your health! There is one of two things that happen when you come out of your doctor's office and are given a diagnosis. You can either, a) blindly follow their suggestions and mindlessly take the prescribed medication for your aches and pain or, b) you can sit back and ask yourself the most empowering question possible: “What is it that I can actually do to actively move the needle on my own health?” My guest today, Bonnie Flemington, is a holistic nutritionist and a passionate advocate for the management of osteoarthritis — she is also someone who has had to deal with this same question for herself.
