Percy Jackson and the Olympians forces us to reevaluate our definition of monstrosity. The Do's and Don'ts of Percy Jackson's Visit to the Gateway Arch. Here's the Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 4 poster. Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 5, “A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers” (00:31:27) Are we disappointed we didn't stay underwater with Percy? Annabeth NEVER doubted Percy was alive. Her FACE when she realizes she's still hugging him. Percy thinks he's so clever, and Grover and Annabeth share the cutest look. Also, he's obsessed with that hug and she's already moved on. How is Percy so confident that he can change Fate? Ares' coat is SO. DRAMATIC. Of course he would have the sound on his phone all the way up. If you're arguing with a Twitter troll, it's probably the god of war. We're so glad they brought Gabe back to do the news interview. Annabeth has NO FEAR! Again, the show incorporates exposition in such a subtle, clever way. Adam Copeland is so good at switching the deadly god persona on and off. Grover does not hesitate to stay behind as collateral. Did Percy just ask Annabeth on a date? That whole thing with the door was brilliant, adding tension and showing us more of Annabeth's personality. Percy thinks Ares is super gross for bringing Aphrodite to Hephaestus' waterpark, and you know what? He's not wrong. Grover is so good at buttering up Ares, and tbh he makes a lot of great points. We're loving the Percabeth banter so much. Also obsessed with the music choice and the animation on the walls of the tunnel. Is Percy a little angry at his mom? We need this ride at Disney!! “I'm figuring this out as I go” is Percy Jackson's life motto. Have we heard about this winter solstice presentation before? Athena and her owl—we can't wait to see it. Grover is so clever, omg. SEAWEED BRAIN. SEAWEED BRAIN. SEAWEED BRAIN. It's so Percabeth, and we're beside ourselves. The performances in this episode are out of this world. Enter Hephaestus, who is not to be trifled with but is also maybe one of the more empathetic gods. Annabeth has changed so much in such little time knowing Percy. Was Ares surprised or disappointed to see the kids return with his shield? The adults in this show are SO MEAN omg. Just call him Impertinent Percy. Wait, Grover knows who the lightning thief is!? Feedback (01:43:13) Rowan has video proof of Rick's pronunciation of Thalia. Untherion wants to talk about the beach house, Blackjack, Grover's (lack of) crutches, and Annabeth being invisible when Percy, um, relieved himself. Lara Downes — Reflections: Scott Joplin Reconsidered (Rising Sun Music) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Lara Downes by Pianist Lara Downes is reconsidering Scott Joplin, who he was and what he did. Joplin was an incredible innovator who really brought American music into the 20th century. Downes digs deeper into his legacy in her latest recording, Reflections: Scott Joplin Reconsidered. Why did you want to learn Joplin's music, which many of us learned about from the movie The Sting? “Even by the age of 7, I was pretty deep into classical music. My sound world was classical music. I heard his music and thought it was really exciting. It's really fun. There was also Paul Newman in the movie. That didn't hurt. So I learned ‘The Entertainer,' and I think it was kind of a treat. In my world, my early training was pretty rigorous. “It's really clear to me now that this whole journey into American music has transformed the way I hear and understand it. It's fun. It's reconnecting with my little girl self, but through a different lens.” Can you talk about the arrangement of ‘The Entertainer' you created? “It was easy and obvious to me what I wanted to do with many of these pieces, but I will admit that ‘The Entertainer' kind of posed a problem. We've heard it so many times and I realized the answer had been literally staring me in the face. On the title page of the piece Joplin dedicates ‘The Entertainer' to James Brown and his mandolin club.” Where did you find ‘A Picture of Her Face,' which you world-premiered with baritone Will Liverman? “This is such an example of the music sitting right there for everyone to find, and we're somehow not finding it. There's this huge digital database of public domain sheet music, IMSLP. We all use it. I was just going through all the Joplin stuff to make sure there was nothing I overlooked, and there's this art song called ‘A Picture of Her Face.' “That same day I was texting with my friend Will Liverman, and we were checking in about some things. ‘What are you up to?' And I said, ‘I'm going to the studio. I'm working on this Joplin project,' and he's like, ‘Oh, I love Joplin!'” Are you really the only performer on ‘Eugenia'? “Oh, you're hearing a lot of stuff inside the piano that we put in there, because I kept saying to [producer] Adam [Abeshouse], ‘I want to play around with different sounds and colors.' He said, ‘OK, hold on a second.' He goes and gets all these rolls of tape and some chains, and he's putting it in the piano. He said, ‘OK, sit down, and try it again.' I think it ends up sounding like one of those saloons where Joplin would have played.” How does this music reflect who you are? “I'm lucky enough to be what Joplin wanted to be. No one's getting in my way. It's amazing for those of us, especially artists of color, who are living now. We are having for the first time the incredible experience of bringing the music of Black artists who came before us to the general public and having that be welcomed.” To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. Book Vs Movie: “My Fair Lady” & “Pygmalion” The George Bernard Shaw Play Vs the George Cukor Movie Musical “March Musicals Month!” The Margos are working heavy on our diction to prepare for this ep. The original story of Pygmalion is based in Greek mythology where an artist falls in love with their own sculpture and is then rejected by them. Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw took the material and in 1913 created the play which tells the story of Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics who believes he can transform a person's status in society by altering their accents and teaching them proper manners. Eliza Doolittle enters this world as a poor woman who sells flowers to sustain herself as she exists in poverty. Professor Higgins's friend Colonel Pickering has recently traveled to India and the two take on the idea of turning Dooltilte into a “Duchess” with proper training. She can't afford lessons so it becomes a bet between Higgins and Pickering on how well she does. The process of Dooltittle's training and whether Higgins and Doolittle wind up a couple make up this “a tale of differing manners” comedy. In 1914, a happy ending was tacked on (with the implication that teacher and student wind up getting married) infuriated Shaw who thought it was way too cheerful and not realistic. The play was adapted into a 1938 movie starred Leslie Howard and was the first to feature the diction lesson “the rain in Spain falls mainly in the plane.” Shaw wound up winning an Academy Award for the screenplay. A 1956 musical version followed that starred Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews) became a sensation as “My Fair Lady.” Hollywood's version also starred Harrison and (controversially) Audrey Hepburn over Julie Andrews as Doolittle. So between the original play and the 1964 musical--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out! Guest Info/Bio: This week I welcome David Zach. David Zach is the lead singer and songwriter for the rock band Remedy Drive as well as an advocate in the fight against human trafficking. The band has recorded two concept albums to shine a light on slavery and to celebrate the modern day abolition. The band's community and fan base has contributed around $350,000 in donations and in-kind donations to the counter trafficking organization The Exodus Road. When the band is not on tour David volunteers with The Exodus Road as an undercover operative. He spends time in brothels and in the red-light districts where underage girls and boys are sold by the hour. His role while undercover is to identify instances of minors being sold, and to capture actionable evidence of their trafficking using covert gear, some of which is funded by the Remedy Drive community and fan base. Upon returning from deployment overseas David uses the band and his platform to advocate for the victims of human trafficking, to shine a light on slavery and to speak about his time overseas with the goal of recruiting and funding the fight which is the modern underground railroad. He has spoken at many of the major festivals during talkback sessions, main stages and seminar tents. He also speaks at colleges, conferences, high school campuses and churches. David's message centers upon a core belief of both Remedy Drive and The Exodus Road - "Justice is in the hands of the ordinary". To hear about raids/rescues and everything going on the front lines text “remedy” to 51555. Wouldn’t it be loverly if the Broadway Babies discussed the dynamic Pygmalion musical "My Fair Lady"? Just you wait, this episode is diving into some juicy drama surrounding the 2001 West End revival’s multiple Elizas, the importance of healthy singing as a live performer, the relationship between Eliza and Henry, and more! With a little bit of luck, maybe we will be able to unpack this beast of a show in an hour … Podcast cover art: David Taylor Twitter: @bwaybabies Facebook: Facebook.com/broadwaybabiespodcast iTunes | Spotify | Amazon CD Songs "Overture/Prologue" "I Could Have Danced All Night" (performed by Martine McCutcheon) "On the Street Where You Live" (performed by Mark Umbers) "With a Little Bit of Luck" (performed by Dennis Waterman) "Ascot Gavotte" (performed by My Fair Lady company) "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" (performed by Jonathan Pryce) (All lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner & music by Frederick Loewe; orchestrated by William David Brohn) Show Notes A news profile about Martine McCutcheon’s understudy, Alexandra Jay, who had her own 42nd Street moment when she had to go on as Eliza on the eve of opening night with about a day’s notice. It’s very press-controlled, fluff piece-y, lots of quotes from Cameron Mackintosh, and it weirdly talks about her salaries at jobs. A really interesting documentary on YouTube about the 2001 "My Fair Lady" West End production, with rehearsal scenes of "The Rain in Spain" and "With a Little Bit of Luck," as well as the production history of the musical and its then-infamous straight play source material Jonathan Pryce shares his opinions about the “Eliza flux” with some pretty straightforward American talk show hosts… Martine McCutcheon sings "Loverly" on a TV show, and she’s loverly, but it’s not quite up to par as a classical voice. For what I mean by that: A video of Audra taking a high-as-hell D flat in "Danced All Night" after pianist Seth Rudetsky surprises her with a key change, and she still nails it because she’s just FLAWLESS.
