Orson Scott Card (born August 24, 1951) is an American writer known best for his science fiction works. As of 2024, he is the only person to have won a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award in consecutive years, winning both awards for his novel Ender's Game (1985) and its sequel Speaker for the Dead (1986). A feature film adaptation of Ender's Game, which Card coproduced, was released in 2013. Card also wrote the Locus Fantasy Award-winning series The Tales of Alvin Maker (1987–2003). Card's fiction often features characters with exceptional gifts who make difficult choices with high stakes. Card has also written political, religious, and social commentary in his columns and other writing; his opposition to homosexuality has provoked public criticism. Card, who is a great-great-grandson of Brigham Young, was born in Richland, Washington, and grew up in Utah and California. While he was a student at Brigham Young University (BYU), his plays were performed on stage. He served in Brazil as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and headed a community theater for two summers. Card had 27 short stories published between 1978 and 1979, and he won the John W. Campbell Award for best new writer in 1978. He earned a master's degree in English from the University of Utah in 1981 and wrote novels in science fiction, fantasy, nonfiction, and historical fiction genres starting in 1979. Card continued to write prolifically, and he has published over 50 novels and 45 short stories.[1] Card teaches English at Southern Virginia University; he has written two books on creative writing and serves as a judge in the Writers of the Future contest. He has taught many successful writers at his "literary boot camps". He remains a practicing member of the LDS Church. Life Childhood and education Card (right) signing autographs at New York Comic Con in 2008 Orson Scott Card was born on August 24, 1951, in Richland, Washington.[2] He is the son of Peggy Jane (née Park) and Willard Richards Card, and is the third of six children and the older brother of composer and arranger Arlen Card.[3] Card's family has Mormon pioneer heritage. His ancestors include Brigham Young, Charles Ora Card, Zina P. Young Card, Zina Young Card Brown, and Hugh B. Brown.[4] When Card was one month old, his family moved to San Mateo, California, so Willard Card could begin a sign-painting business. When he was three years old, the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, so his father could finish his bachelor's degree. The family moved to Santa Clara, California, when Card was six; they stayed there for seven years while his father completed his master's degree and worked as a professor at San Jose State College. In school, Card took classes for gifted students, but he was more interested in studying music—he played clarinet and French horn. He read widely, including historical fiction, nonfiction, and literary classics.[5] At age ten, he wrote his first story, which was about an intelligent child who is assaulted by bullies and sustains brain damage. Ender's confrontation with Stilson in Ender's Game is based on this story.[6] In 1964, Card and his family moved to Mesa, Arizona, where he participated in mock debates in junior high school. In 1967, the family moved to Orem, Utah, where his father worked at Brigham Young University (BYU). Card attended BYU's laboratory school, where he took both high school and early college-level classes before graduating in one year. When beginning his college studies he intended to major in archeology, but after becoming increasingly more interested in theater, he began script-writing, writing ten original plays and rewriting other students' plays. Most of his plays were based on Mormon history and scriptures; one was science fiction. By watching the body language of an audience, he could tell when an audience was interested in his scripts.[6][7] During his studies as a theater major, he began doctoring

Brown and his attempts to lift the priesthood and temple ban for black members of the church. Hugh B. Brown was an attorney and joined the First Presidency in 1963. He made countless efforts to convince the Brethren that the ban on blacks should be lifted and even told the New York Times that there was a strong possibility the ban would soon be removed. This response caused a great deal of problems at Church Headquarters. Forty-six years ago this month, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, under then-President Spencer W. Kimball, lifted its prohibition preventing Black men from entering the all-male priesthood and Black women and men from participating in temple rites. This historic shift, the most significant since the faith stopped practicing polygamy, abruptly ended this racist ban, but it hardly ended racism within the church. After all, 126 years of theological justifications for the ban remained, including influential works such as “Mormon Doctrine” by apostle Bruce R. McConkie. Cleanup still needed — and needs — to be done. Building on President Gordon B. Hinckley's outreach efforts, current church leader Russell M. Nelson has called on members to lead out against racism and has cemented ties with the NAACP. Matthew Harris' new book, “Second-Class Saints: Black Mormons and the Struggle for Racial Equality,” explores the history of the priesthood/temple ban, from its racist roots under Brigham Young to its removal and its aftermath, with an eye especially on its effects on Black Latter-day Saints. With unprecedented access to the papers of Kimball, McConkie, Hugh B. Brown and Joseph Fielding Smith, Harris offers an insider view of the decision-making process among the church hierarchy regarding issues of race and this momentous move. One of my favorite sermons in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is a sermon delivered by President Hugh B. Brown at BYU. It's entitled God is the Gardner; I'm confident that many of you have heard this before. But I love the part at the end where, when dealing with a massive professional disappointment, that Brother Brown says that, he takes his fist and he shakes it at heaven, and he says why would you do this to me, God? I've done all that I know how to uphold the standards of the Church, and yet you've cut me down. He then remembers that he had said something very similar to a currant bush, and he recognized the lesson that God would do as he saw fit for his best growth. And then repeated part of the hymn “It may not be on the mountain height, or over the stormy sea. It may not be at the battle's front, my Lord will have need of me. But if by a still small voice he calls, to paths that I do not know, I'll answer dear Lord with my hand in thine, I'll go where you want me to go.” Now this may be a funny hymn and a funny story to remember when we're going to be discussing Jonah today, perhaps the most famous character to shirk what the Lord asked him to do. But I was struck by it in thinking about the ways that I would like to think I am like Elder Brown in this situation, but that often, I actually end up acting like Jonah. In this episode of Abide: A Maxwell Institute Podcast, we'll discuss what it means to answer the Lord's call and also different ways of approaching scripture in our personal study.   This is Entrepreneurs of Faith, a Sunday episode of Monetization Nation. I'm Nathan Gwilliam, your host. In today's episode, we're going to discuss an inspiring commencement speech Hugh B. Brown gave about coming to understand God's method for helping us learn, grow and improve. All of us have challenges and trials. We each have times we feel cut down, and we need to remember that God is our gardener. He may cut us down, but he does so with the purpose of making us greater than we are now.    We will also look at five successful people who were fired before becoming rich and famous and how they continued on despite their challenges.    The Currant Bush   In 1968, Hugh B. Brown, an attorney, educator, and church leader, gave a commencement speech at BYU. He encouraged the graduating students to develop a personal relationship with God and to keep close to Him as they moved onto the next stages of their lives. As part of his message, he shared a story of a currant bush.    While Brown was on a farm in Canada, he found a currant bush. The bush had grown over six feet tall and showed no signs of blossoms or fruit, so Brown grabbed his pruning shears and cut the bush down until there was nothing left but a clump of stumps.    As he looked at what was left on the bush, he saw what looked like a tear. He asked, “What's the matter, currant bush? What are you crying about?” And he thought he heard the bush speak. It seemed to say, “How could you do this to me? I was making such wonderful growth. I was almost as large as the fruit tree and the shade tree, and now you have cut me down. And all in the garden will look upon me with contempt and pity. How could you do it? I thought you were the gardener here.”   With that, he responded, “Look, little currant bush, I am the gardener here, and I know what I want you to be. If I let you go the way you want to go, you will never amount to anything. But someday, when you are laden with fruit, you are going to think back and say, ‘Thank you, Mr. Gardener, for cutting me down, for loving me enough to hurt me.'”   Ten years later, Brown found himself in Europe as a field officer in the Canadian Army during World War I. One day there had been a casualty. The man standing between Brown and the rank of a general had been lost in war. The day after, Brown received a telegram from London from General Turner, requesting he be brought to his office the following morning.    Brown polished his boots and buttons and prepared himself for the meeting, expecting to be appointed an army general. However, when he went to London, the general roughly told him to sit down. He said, “Brown, you are entitled to this promotion, but I cannot make it. You have qualified and passed the regulations, you have had the experience, and you are entitled to it in every way, but I cannot make this appointment.”   With that, he left the room. Brown leaned over the table and looked at his personal history sheet and saw a sentence written at the bottom that had his religious affiliation written with each letter capitalized. They had denied him the position because of his faith.    On his way back to his tent, bitterness rose. He shook his fist at heaven and asked, “How could you do this to me, God? I've done everything that I knew how to do to uphold the standards of the Church. I was making such wonderful growth, and now you've cut me down. How could you do it?”   Then he heard a voice that sounded like his own. It said, “I am the gardener here. I know what I want you to be. If I let you go the way you want to go, you will never amount to anything. And someday, when you are ripened in life, you are going to shout back across the time and say, ‘Thank you, Mr. Gardener, for cutting me down, for loving me enough to hurt me.'”   Years later, Brown realized that if he had taken the position of a senior commanding officer, he wouldn't have experienced many of the blessings he had later on in life. Now, looking back, he is able to say, “Thank you, Mr. Gardener, for cutting me down.”   God is our gardener. He knows what's best for us and sometimes we need to be cut down in order to grow. We may not understand it at first, but God knows where He needs us to be. We just need to trust Him.    This same principle applies in business. As entrepreneurs with faith, we need to remember that God knows what is best for us. Sometimes our ventures may fail, or we may run into a dead-end where we have to pivot. We need to trust that God is in control and maybe using the failures to help us grow and lead us down a better path.    5 Successful People Who Were Fired   Many successful entrepreneurs were fired before they made their big breakthroughs. God had to “cut them down” so they could find a path that would lead to something better.      Elon Musk     Before Elon Musk became the founder and CEO of SpaceX, became the CEO and product designer of Tesla, and gained a net worth of $166 billion, he was “cut down.”   In 1999, Elon Musk started X.com, an online financial services company. He invested a large amount of money into the company as he took on his venture. However, in 2000, when X.com merged with a competing company to become PayPal, Musk was fired from his role as CEO due to disagreements (Source: Business Insider).    Only a couple of years later, in 2002, Musk founded SpaceX, a space exploration technology company that is now valued at about $74 billion (Source: Forbes). Then, in 2004, Musk joined Tesla and in 2008, he took over as CEO (Source: Interesting Engineering).    If Musk hadn't been fired from PayPal, there is a chance he would not be leading SpaceX and Tesla. Sometimes it takes failure to be pushed into something greater.      Walt Disney     Before Walt Disney created one of the largest media companies in the world, a company that is now worth more than $120 billion, his editor fired him from the newspaper because he “lacked creativity” (Source: Business Insider).    This forced Disney to experiment with hand-drawn animation and eventually led him to start his first animation business, Laugh-O-Gram. When Laugh-O-Gram went bankrupt, it forced him to move to Hollywood and open his own studio. Then, when his distributor took the rights for his cartoon, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, it forced Disney to use his imagination and he created Mickey Mouse (Source: Walt Disney Archives).    Disney experienced multiple setbacks within his career, however, he didn't let it stop him from moving forward. Each setback led him to a greater opportunity. We need to remember that sometimes we are stopped on the path we are on because God has something greater in mind for us.    “All the adversity I've had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me,” Disney said. “You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.”     Steve Jobs     Steve Jobs was fired from Apple, the company he co-founded.    When Jobs was 21, he co-founded the Apple Computer, and by the time he was 23, he became a millionaire, but when he was 30, he was fired from his own company. Jobs and John Sculley had a power struggle, and in 1985, Apple's board sided with Sculley (Source: ABC News).   However, this setback ended up being one of the best things that could have happened to him. While Jobs was away from Apple, he learned valuable lessons that helped him achieve his future success.  In 1996, Apple Computer asked Jobs to come back to the company. Jobs returned as Apple's CEO and led the company in the creation of great innovations, such as the iPod and iPhone.   "I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter into one of the most creative periods of my life," Jobs said.     J.K. Rowling     J.K. Rowling was fired from her secretary position because she spent too much time daydreaming at work.    Business Insider reported that Rowling secretly wrote stories on her work computer while dreaming up the story of a teenage wizard named Harry Potter. However, this setback actually paved the way for Rowling to start her novel. Her severance check helped support her while she focused on her writing (Source: Bustle). Now, J.K Rowling is worth just over $1 billion and is the author of one of the most successful series ever written.    More than 500 million copies of the Harry Potter books have been sold worldwide, with 180 million sold in the United States alone (Source: MediaRoom). The first Harry Potter movie made $974.71 million (Source: Forbes) and all together, the films made over $7 billion (Source: ShowBiz CheatSheet).    However, it is safe to say that Rowling wouldn't have been pushed to write the Harry Potter books if she wasn't fired.      Oprah Winfrey      Oprah Winfrey was fired from reporting the evening news for Baltimore's WJZ-TV. Her producer told her she was “unfit for television news” since she showed too much emotion (Source: Inc.).    However, this setback led Winfrey to work for a daytime television show, People Are Talking. The show became very popular and eventually led her to create her own show, the Oprah Winfrey Show. Her show has aired nationally for 25 seasons (Source: TVdb), and she's currently worth about $3 billion (Source: Forbes). Being fired was one of the best things that could have happened to Winfrey.    "Wherever you are in your journey, I hope you, too, will keep encountering challenges. It is a blessing to be able to survive them, to be able to keep putting one foot in front of the other—to be in a position to make the climb up life's mountain, knowing that the summit still lies ahead," Winfrey said.    Trusting in God    As we trust in God and his plan for us, recovering from our setbacks will become much easier. God is our gardener. He may cut us down at points in our lives, but it is because He loves us. While we may be prevented from going down one path, the next path could lead to much greater things.    While Brown gave his speech to a group of graduates, we can apply this same lesson as we move forward onto new stages of our lives. As we come closer to God and understand His love for us, we will have the courage to continue on.    Brown said:   “Now some of you as you go forward is going to meet with disappointment—perhaps many disappointments, some of them crucial. Sometimes you will wonder if God has forgotten you. Sometimes you may even wonder if He lives and where He has gone. But in these times when so many are saying God is dead and when so many are denying His existence, I think I could not leave with you a better message than this: God is aware of you individually. He knows who you are and what you are, and, furthermore, He knows what you are capable of becoming. Be not discouraged, then, if you do not get all the things you want just when you want them. Have the courage to go on and face your life . . .”   Key Takeaways   Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode:   God is our gardener. He knows what's best for us and sometimes that means we need to be cut down in order to grow. Sometimes our ventures may fail, or we may run into a dead-end. Instead of giving up, let's learn and pivot. Many successful entrepreneurs were fired before they made their big breakthrough. God may stop us from going down one path because He knows there is another path that will lead to greater success. As we come closer to God and understand His love for us, we will have the courage to continue on His path for us. The End of Benson's Political Aspirations (Part 11 of 13)

Ezra Taft Benson wanted to run for U.S. President. Dr. Matt Harris describes a few attempts by Benson to run for POTUS, and how Church leaders finally put an end to Benson's political aspirations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-oIv27fYmA Matt: The Birchers will create this secret organization called the Committee of 1776. It's run by Birchers. It's got Birch footprints all over it, but "we can't reveal ourselves as Birchers because it's too controversial." And they say this in their board meeting. "If we say it's us, then people will be turned off by it. So do not mention that Robert Welch or anybody is behind this. But it's really mostly Birchers doing this. So they draft Benson as their presidential candidate and they draft a man named Strom Thurmond, who was a Dixiecrat in the 1940's, and split off from the Democratic Party because he was so pro-segregation and didn't like the civil rights tack that President Harry Truman was taking. ... And, without going into the details, the ticket fizzles. It doesn't raise enough money. Thurman never had the buy-in, to be honest, that Benson had. Benson was alarmed by it and just giddy about it. President McKay gives the green light for him to do this, by the way, which is interesting, over the protest, of Hugh Brown and some other leaders. ... Elder Benson and his son Reed fly out to Birmingham and they have a three hour meeting with George Wallace and Benson tells Robert Welch, "He's a great guy. We have a lot in common." So, Benson tells Governor Wallace, "I need to get the support of President McKay. I can't do this unilaterally." President McKay knew that there was some pushback when he gave the green light to run with Strom Thurmond. Some of the Apostles told him, including Hugh Brown, "This is stupid. Don't do this." McKay is an old Scottish man. He had a little temper. "Don't tell me what to do." The brethren were sensitive to that, including Hugh B. Brown. So he goes back to Salt Lake and tells President McKay in a highly confidential meeting, "They want me to be the presidential candidate with Wallace." This is on the Independent ticket because there's a Republican Mormon who might wrap up the Republican nomination. So we've got two high profile Mormons running for the same office. GT: This is George Romney, right? Matt: George Romney, right. What really muddies the water is there are a number of brethren who support George Romney and not Benson. That's another challenging issue. GT: And Marion G. Romney is in the quorum. How is he related to George? Matt: They're cousins. So, we've got that dynamic going on, too. Romney has gotten priesthood blessings from President McKay, from other people about running and they tell him, "You're going to run and we support you." President McKay supports George Romney and tells him this. If you were't aware, George Romney is the father of Mitt Romney.  Harris tells how LDS leaders ended Benson's political ambitions. Ezra Taft Benson was a sharp critic of the civil rights movement and called it a communist conspiracy.  Why was that?  Dr. Matt Harris details the red scare, and why Benson was so opposed to both communism and civil rights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrO2P0AcZgk Matt:  Elder Benson thinks that Martin Luther King--this is the Birch view, of course, but Elder Benson, following the Birch line thinking that Dr King is a communist agent. That somehow if you push for racial equality, you also want economic equality and that makes you a socialist and a communist. So Elder Benson is furious with Hugh B. Brown's general conference talk, where the Church is on record as supporting civil rights. Now keep in mind what that means. Brown never said that we favor the civil rights stuff going on in Congress right now. Nor do we favor particular legislation in the State of Utah. There was nothing specific about it. He would write that too, to other Latter-day Saints who wrote him letters. "Does that mean we support the Civil Rights Act of 1963, that John F Kennedy is pushing through?" He'd write back, "We don't support any particular policy. I just want you to know that we do support civil rights as a general principle." So clearly, there's some hedging with him. We will also talk about his European Mission. Matt:  ...after the whole Harding speech on the floor of the Congress, it created a buzz storm. And the brethren and President McKay [decide] "We've got to get Benson out of the country. We've got to purify his blood." That's what Joseph Fielding Smith says in a private letter. We've got to get him out of the country and purify his blood. What he meant by that is purify his blood of politics, of Birch. In 1963, ironically enough, the same month that Hugh B. Brown is giving that civil rights statement in conference, Elder Benson's going to get summoned into the First Presidency's office to be told that he's going to be sent to Germany to preside over the European mission. If you were born after 1975, you may not have heard of the John Birch Society.  Dr. Matt Harris tells us more about this group, and President Benson's allegiance to this anti-communist group.  Check out our conversation…. https://youtu.be/uWhykFRJz5U Matt:   He meets a man named Robert Welch who founds this very controversial anticommunist organization called the John Birch Society, named after a fallen GI in World War II, John Birch. Welch organizes the Birch Society in 1958. He writes an extremely controversial book that will get him pilloried in the national press. It's called The Politician. He writes it in '58, but it's not published until '63. So it's this big long manuscript that he shares privately with some friends and Benson will get a copy of this manuscript before it's published in book form. In the manuscript, it says that Eisenhower and members of his cabinet are communists. He also said that Milton Eisenhower, the president's brother and close advisor, is also commie. He spells out several people. He says that the CIA director, John Foster Dulles, the Secretary of State--they're all commies. He gives several reasons why. Eisenhower doesn't curtail the New Deal policies. This is liberal new deal. Of course, a lot of conservatives at the time thought that liberalism equated to socialism and communism. Well, one of the things that President Eisenhower doesn't do is drastically roll back the New Deal and that leaves him open for criticism among people like Robert Welch. There's some other things. Welch criticizes some decisions that President Eisenhower had made, General Eisenhower had made during World War II and somehow that equates to communism. I mean, really, it's far reaching here. I guess what surprises me is how Benson turns on Eisenhower, after the two had been such good friends! Henry D. Moyle is in the First Presidency when this letter is sent out. He's a Democrat and Hugh B. Brown's a Democrat, too, the other counselor at the time. You can imagine they're just mortified over this. Here's a moderate Republican now getting accused of being a commie--a five-star general who spent his entire adult life fighting communism and now his erstwhile cabinet secretary accuses him of being a commie. Moyle calls him in. He calls him Taft. Moyle called Taft in and one participant, or one witness said, "He ripped Taft, ripped him." One of the things he said was, "How could you be disloyal to President Eisenhower like this?" You can imagine that as he's sending this around, his son, in the meantime joins the Birch Society and becomes a high ranking official in the Birch Society. He's the National Communications Director, I think, is one of his titles. And he's going around giving speeches to Birch audiences, both in Utah, Idaho, actually one here in Denver, Colorado. He calls President Eisenhower a commie, out in the open--the news media is there. GT: Reed Benson? Matt:  Reed Benson, yeah. Ezra is a little more circumspect. President--Elder Benson at that point knew that it probably wasn't good karma to give speeches, you know, so his son would do that. But Elder Benson did get himself into trouble in 1963. Check out our conversation, as well as our first conversation about how Benson joined the Eisenhower cabinet. Ezra Taft Benson, and his son Reed, were big supporters of the John Birch Society

Ezra Taft Benson joined Eisenhower to be his Agriculture Secretary in 1952.  Benson didn't even vote for Eisenhower!  But President McKay allowed apostle Benson to serve for eight years in the Eisenhower administration.  Dr. Matt Harris tells more about the relationship between Ike and ETB. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGINHcI6Dw0 Dwight Eisenhower has never met Benson before, but yet he wants a churchman into his cabinet because he thinks that will help with religious people for one and for two, he also wanted somebody in the Midwest. Even though, I guess, technically Utah's not in the Midwest, he thought that that would help him with the Midwest vote. So he calls Benson and Benson says, "Are you sure you want me? I didn't even vote for you." GT:  Oh, really? Matt:  "I didn't even vote for you." So anyway, I won't go into all the details, but he gets the blessing from President McKay. He gets the green light to take a leave of absence from his apostolic duties to go to Washington. In our next episode with Dr. Matt Harris, we will talk about how President Kimball persuaded the apostles to lift the priesthood and temple ban on black church members.  It turns out the Brazil Temple was a key part of that, as well as Bruce R. McConkie's change of heart. https://youtu.be/BCluCf6bA5A Kimball knows the consequences of doing something unilaterally without quorum buy-in.  He sees that in church history, and he experiences it himself during the McKay administration.  So, President Kimball recognizes this is such a delicate task, and that if he is going to make this, arguably, probably the most momentous—not arguably.  In the 20th century, it is the most momentous decision in the church, second maybe only to plural marriage, giving black people the priesthood. So, he knows he has to have buy-in.  How do you get buy-in from people who have very, very deep-seated racial views? ... President Kimball announces the Brazil Temple.  This is a bulwark to help the brethren to come along with this.  He recognizes that you can't have temple in this heavily bi-racial nation, where the people who sacrificed and do so much to build the temple are shut off from it.  I mean he understands this. We will also get into more detail on Monroe Fleming's "almost" ordination in 1969! Matt:  The “loyal negro” at the Hotel Utah is Monroe Fleming.  He had been working there for years.  Church leaders all knew him.  Of course, it is a church-owned property.  He was a very faithful member.  I think he joins in the early ‘50s, so clearly he is a pioneer in the church.  He comes of age in the church before the priesthood revelation, so he understands the restriction.  But it is not clear if there is going to be an announcement; it's just that “We are going to ordain this loyal negro man.”  That's all it is.  I think Hugh B. Brown mentions Monroe Fleming in a different document, but the McKay document that I have, it's just “a loyal negro member at the Hotel Utah.” Pres. Kimball Announced a new temple in Brazil to get buy-in to help apostles understand why ban needed to be lifted. Check out our conversation!  Don't forget to listen to Matt describe how McKay almost ordained Monroe Fleming in 1969.

Despite several attempts to end the ban in the 1960s, Hugh B. Brown made one final attempt in 1969 and almost succeeded.  However, the attempt was nixed by Harold B. Lee. Dr. Matt Harris will give us more information on this, and I think you will hear some really amazing stuff in this next episode. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k7cPGtZwHU&t Matt:  Anyway, the McKay sons and Brown, when Taggart's thesis comes out, they will use Taggart's research and say, “Look.  This is just a policy.  This is a policy, it is not a doctrine.  So, if it is just a policy, President McKay, then we can overturn this.”  President McKay agrees to ordain a black man named Monroe Fleming, a loyal member at the Hotel Utah.  This is in September of 1969. GT:  Wow. Matt:  Yes, yes.  So, he agrees to ordain Monroe Fleming to the priesthood.  It is interesting, the document that I have that talks about this.  It just says Monroe Fleming.  It doesn't say all persons of African ancestry.  But you can only imagine that if you allow Monroe Fleming the priesthood, based upon his worthiness of course, then that means that other worthy black members of the church can now hold the priesthood.  That's how I interpret that. ... [McKay] agrees to do it, and when Harold B. Lee and Joseph Fielding Smith, mostly Harold B. Lee, because Joseph Fielding Smith is now in his 90s, and his health is getting the best of him.  But when Harold B. Lee finds out about it, he puts an end to it and says, “This is not something that we can do, and if we do it, it has to have buy-in from the Quorum of the Twelve, the full quorum.” So, President McKay, and I'm going to paraphrase, he says, “I'm too old to fight him.  I'm not going to do it.  We will let President Lee worry about this problem.”  That's what he says, this “problem.” We will also talk briefly about some of the BYU protests where other teams were protesting the church's stance with blacks and the priesthood and temple ban. Matt:  President Brown wants to lift the ban to get the athletic protests off their back.  In November of '69 he tells Kenneth Pitzer the Stanford President.  He calls him up.  He said, “This is Hugh Brown of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  I just want you to know, we are going to lift the ban.” GT:  He calls the Stanford University president. Matt:  Yes, he calls the Stanford president and tells him we are going to lift the ban, and even writes him a letter. GT:  The reason why is because Stanford had just cancelled some sort of a series. Matt:  Correct. GT:  Was it football or basketball?  Do you remember? Matt:  Basketball, I think it was basketball.  It was that fall, they cancelled their contract with BYU basketball. Lee strongly rejected attempts for black ordination [paypal-donation] Check out our other conversations with Matt, like Brown's previous attempts to end the ban.  Check out our conversation….

The United States were grappling with the Civil Rights Movement during the tumultuous 1960s.  In our next conversation with Matt Harris, we will talk about key events in the 1960s that affect the LDS Church's teaching about race and how the Civil Rights Movement impacted the Mormon Church.  We will even learn that Elder Brown predicted to end ban in 1962 General Conference! https://youtu.be/023tWoriAqA Matt: Hugh B. Brown was front and center in church leadership trying to get the brethren to overturn the ban.  He is working behind the scenes.  He is doing the best that he can, but it is very, very challenging for him.  In 1962 he will have a private meeting with Lowell Bennion, whom we have already talked about who didn't support the ban and told President McKay in private. So, it was no secret that President McKay knew where Brother Bennion stood.  Anyway, in March of 1962, Hugh B. Brown tells Lowell Bennion, “We're going to lift the ban here next month.  Make sure you come to [General] Conference.”[1] GT:  '62?! Matt:  This is March of '62. GT:  Wow. Matt: “Come to Conference next month.  We're going to lift the ban.” The prediction of course is in April of '62, we're going to have this big announcement at General Conference.  “We have been studying this issue, and there is nothing more difficult for the church,” Brown tells Bennion, “than this issue, and we're going to fix it.” So, I can only imagine Bennion showing up and nothing happens! We will also talk about the motivation behind the 1949 First Presidency statement, and apostle Hugh B. Brown's attempts to rescind the ban. Matt:  Recognizing that Lowry Nelson had spent time in Cuba as part of his profession, his field research, he decided to reach out to Nelson and ask him about Cuba and the racial population there because Nelson had lived there for a while.  Lowry Nelson wrote back and just said, “I don't think you can determine who has got negroid blood, and you shouldn't even try!  That's just immoral!” Nelson said something that is probably less than candid.  He said, “That was the first time I knew that the church felt this way about this.” Come on Lowry.  You grew up in the church.  So, Lowry Nelson writes the First Presidency after he exchanged correspondence with his good friend Heber Meeks.  He said, “Is it true that you are trying to establish a mission in Cuba, and just focus on the white population there and not the colored, the brown population?  Is that true?” The First Presidency wrote him back a series of letters.  They said, “Yes that is true, and we don't understand why God wants this ban, but this is the way it is.  Who are you to determine what God should do?” Nelson was really upset with the response, thinking that it was just a policy that could be changed.  But the brethren dug their heels in and sort of exacerbated the problem.  When they wrote back to Lowry Nelson, it was the first time where the First Presidency goes on record, and they sign the letter.  It is interesting.  They all sign these letters back and forth, all three of them:  George Albert Smith, J. Reuben Clark, and David O. McKay.  Clearly, they are trying to make a statement about the church's racial teachings, at least by the mid-20th century. What is interesting is he shares these letters on the underground with people.  He sends them to Juanita Brooks.[2]  He sends them to George Boyd who is the Institute person.  He sends them to all of these Institute people that he felt like he had a liberal kinship with, and they write him back.  ”Oh my goodness.  I didn't know the brethren felt this way, that they felt this strongly about it.” We'll also talk about Michigan and Mormon Governor George Romney's run for the U.S. presidency. You might recognize his famous son Mitt Romney did the same just a few years ago.  George Romney's cousin was also an LDS Apostle, and the 1960s had a lot of factions for and against the ban on blacks from temple...
