The once full compact truck space was filled with any number of budget-friendly small trucks that would handle the arduous task of hauling landscaping pieces from your local home store, or moving a Go-Kart has disappeared. Those small trucks either grew into the mid-size trucks we know today or fell into the footnotes of history, like the rotary-powered Mazda REPU. The folks at Hyundai jumped back into the underserviced space with the crossover-based Hyundai Santa Cruz. Riding on the same N3 platform as the similarly named Sante Fe, this Santa Cruz pickup essentially gives you the comfort and convenience of a modern crossover, with a separated, external four-foot cargo space – or bed, for the truck enthusiasts. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the '25 Santa Cruz and highlights some of its updates and some of his favorite features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek executive editor Tom Murphy about the Santa Cruz, the competitive set, and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz so special.

Dave's Driving the Hyundai Santa Cruz 02/19/25
“White space” is hard to find in the U.S. car market, but Hyundai found a niche in 2021 when it introduced the Santa Cruz compact pickup truck. Now, four years down the road, the Santa Cruz remains a standout, blending a five-passenger crossover interior with the practicality of an open pickup truck bed. Designed for buyers seeking the utility of a truck without the bulk, it competes directly with the Ford Maverick, although the two small trucks differ markedly in persona. For 2025, the Santa Cruz features refreshed interiors, a sleek curved infotainment display, and a rugged XRT trim with all-terrain tires. Available in five trims ranging from the base SE to the luxurious Limited, which Host Jack Nerad tested for the week. With its 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and advanced safety systems, the likable little truck reminded Nerad of a sports sedan. He'll have a full report in this episode. On the other coast, Co-Host Chris Teague slipp[ed behind the wheel of the 2025 Honda Prologue battery-electric SUV. Teague had a strong sense of deja vue since he owns a 2024 version., He'll offer his opinions on the vehicle based on his lengthy exposure in this edition. Our guest this week is one of the most heralded automotive journalists of all time. Ted West has won multiple Ken Purdy awards for excellence in auto journalism, and he has put his considerable talents to writing what many have called the best racing novel of all time. Jack Nerad will talk with him about that, his entry into the world of auto writing, and his most recent literary endeavors. In the news this week, car sales are plodding along, and electric car sales are plodding right along with them. We'll give you the details and share our thoughts about how this year will end for carmakers the world over coming up. Two major global brands have reaffirmed their commitment to battery-electric vehicles this week. We'll tell you who they are and what they are doing about it. Their efforts could mean a bargain buy for you. Jeep has just pulled the wraps off a new military-inspired Jeep Wrangler, and it channels the vibe — if not the size — of the original World War II vintage Jeep. We'll share the details with you. Jaguar has decided to rebrand itself as it moves forward with its battery-electric vehicle plans, and the new ad campaign it spawned has sparked significant controversy. We'll give you our takes on this minor tempest. So we have a lot of show for you this week. Thanks for joining us, and don't forget to look for new content on our YouTube and Rumble channels. This week's lead news story is the just-announced 2025 Ford Mustang GTD that Ford Motor Company says is the pinnacle of Mustang engineering. As we discuss in this week's episode, it's hard to argue that. The Mustang GTD delivers a mind-blowing 815 horsepower, 664 pound-feet of torque, and a riveting top speed of 202 mph. The fastest street-legal Mustang ever boasts advanced features that include active aerodynamics, carbon-ceramic brakes, and a sophisticated suspension system. One goal of the new Mustang standard-bearer is achieving a sub-seven-minute lap at Nürburgring. Powered by a supercharged 5.2-liter V8, the GTD appears to have the goods to do just that. With the dry-sump oil system, its engine offers enhanced lubrication during high-speed cornering and revs up to 7,650 rpm. If that's not enough, the Mustang GTD also incorporates a specialized drag reduction system that enables it to adjust its aerodynamics to optimize speed and grip based on driving conditions — a pretty nice trick. Co-Host Chris Teague and Host Jack Nerad will react to the newest Ford sup0ercar in this episode. In our road tests this week, Chris Teague will evaluate another vehicle from an American brand, the 2025 Dodge Hornet. The Hornet is designed to help Dodge turn the page from its musclecar — and some would say muscle-bound — past. Its goal is to maintain the brand's performance image but putting it in a new context. Chris and Jack will discuss if it lives up to that billing. The Ford Ranger Lariat 4x4 with the FX4 package is the subject of our other road test this week. The newest Ranger marks Ford's renewed interest in the midsize truck segment here in North America, and it comes amidst a flurry of new midsize pickups from both domestic and import automakers. Jack and Chris will describe how they believe it stacks up. This week, our special guest is Brad Arnold, a top-ranking Hyundai designer in North America. At a recent event in central California, he and Host Jack Nerad sat down for a lengthy discussion of the heavily revised 2025 Hyundai Tucson and 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz. We're sure you'll enjoy our discussion. In the news this week, we'll be talking about something that seems too good to be true. Would you lease a brand-new EV if the monthly payment was $20? That's happening right now, and we'll tell you more about it coming up. In other news, Volvo is ditching its vehicle subscription plan after several years of lackluster interest from the public. We'll have more on that, and we'll talk about a Toyota Prius hypermiler who just set a Guiness World record for fuel economy in a drive from coast to coast. So we have a lot of show for you this week. Thanks for joining us. And please don't forget to look for our content on YouTube and Rumble. If you subscribe, it will help us bring you even more. Tom also shares his thoughts on Ford's latest pony car. Still in the first segment, the hosts recapped the news from the New York Auto Show. Highlights including news from Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, and Nissan. In the second segment Jill and Tom welcome Andew Collins of The Drive to the show. 2024 Ford Maverick Review: A Compact Truck That Packs a Punch The 2024 Ford Maverick is a compact pickup truck that has shaken up the automotive landscape. Bucking the trend of ever-growing trucks, the Maverick offers a refreshing alternative for those seeking practicality, efficiency, and affordability in a smaller package. This review delves deep into the Maverick's performance, design, features, and value proposition, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of this unique offering. Powertrain and Performance: The Maverick comes in two engine options: a standard 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder producing 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, and an available hybrid powertrain pairing a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine with an electric motor for a combined 191 horsepower. Both engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and offer front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive available. Fuel Efficiency: The Maverick shines in terms of fuel efficiency. The standard EcoBoost engine achieves an impressive 23 mpg city and 32 mpg highway in front-wheel drive configuration, reaching 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway with all-wheel drive. The hybrid truly sets itself apart, boasting a remarkable 42 mpg city and 44 mpg highway, making it one of the most fuel-efficient trucks available. Driving Dynamics and Handling: While not designed for off-road prowess, the Maverick handles surprisingly well on paved roads. The suspension provides a comfortable ride, absorbing bumps and road imperfections effectively. The steering feels responsive and precise, even at highway speeds. However, the truck's height can lead to some body roll in sharp corners, which is to be expected for a vehicle of its size and purpose. Design and Interior: The Maverick's exterior design is bold and distinctive, with a muscular stance and unique styling elements. The signature LED headlights and taillights add a modern touch, while the optional two-tone paint scheme further enhances its visual appeal. The interior prioritizes practicality and functionality. The cabin offers ample space for both passengers and cargo. The seats are comfortable for long journeys, and the driver's seat provides good visibility. The dashboard layout is straightforward and user-friendly, with easy-to-reach controls and a standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. However, some reviewers noted the use of hard plastics in certain areas, which could feel less premium compared to competitors. Features and Technology: The Maverick offers a surprising array of standard features for its price point. The base XL trim comes equipped with cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection. Higher trim levels offer additional features like a power tailgate, heated seats and steering wheel, a sunroof, and a larger 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Ford's SYNC 4 system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Cargo Capacity and Towing: Despite its compact size, the Maverick boasts a surprisingly generous bed for its class. The bed measures 4.5 feet long and 40.9 inches wide, offering enough space for carrying various cargo items. The payload capacity is rated at 1500 pounds, while the towing capacity reaches 2000 pounds with the EcoBoost engine and 2500 pounds with the hybrid powertrain. Value Proposition and Competition: The 2024 Ford Maverick starts at a competitive price of $25,410 for the base XL trim with the EcoBoost engine, making it one of the most affordable new trucks on the market. This starting price, coupled with its exceptional fuel efficiency, makes the Maverick a compelling choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking efficiency and practicality. The Maverick's main competitors include the Hyundai Santa Cruz, another compact pickup truck offering similar features and capabilities. The Santa Cruz boasts a slightly higher starting price and a more stylish, car-like design, while the Maverick prioritizes functionality and affordability. Additionally, the Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado are established players in the compact truck segment, but they offer larger sizes, stronger towing capacity, and a more traditional truck experience at a higher price point. Overall, the 2024 Ford Maverick is a game-changer in the compact truck segment. It offers exceptional fuel efficiency, impressive cargo capacity for its size, and a long list of standard features at a starting price that undercuts most competitors. While it may lack the off-road prowess of some trucks and the premium interior materials of others, the Maverick excels in practicality, affordability, and fuel efficiency, making it a compelling choice for a variety of buyers. Additional Points to Consider:Availability: The Maverick has been in high demand since its launch, and finding one at dealerships can be challenging.Hybrid Option LimitationsThanks for listening to Quiet Please. It's not every car company that also builds light tanks and a variety of aircraft, but Praga, the Prague-based company founded in 1907, is one such automaker. Having survived the perils of two world wars, Communist occupation, and the topsy-turvy market of the late 20th Century, Praga is poised to enter a new era with the initial production of the company's Praga Bohema road-legal hypercar in a dedicated facility in the Czech Republic. The stunning Bohema will be hand-built in very low numbers over the next four years. One of its calling cards is its incredible lightness of being. At less than 2,200 pounds, it offers one horsepower for every 3.14 pounds. Its 700 horsepower is impressive enough, even in this age of 1,000-horsepower electric cars, but that weight-to-power should result in a startlingly fast road car with remarkable handling. Praga says it “could well be the last all-new petrol-powered hypercar.” The $1.5 million all-carbon aero-driven two-seater built by Czech craftsmen is bound to pique hypercar collectors' interest. In other news this week, Volkswagen is celebrating 75 years in the American market, and we'll give you some of the highlights along the way and talk about the prospects for Volkswagen in the United States going forward. The Beetle first landed here for sale in 1949, and that began an incredible saga that continued in roller-coaster fashion to the present day. In other news, the Dubai Police have taken delivery of a very unlikely new police cruiser and added it to their fleet this week. We'll tell you what it is and how it all happened coming up. In the road test segment, guest Co-Host Matt DeLorenzo will tell us all about the exciting Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. If a hybrid Corvette sounds just too weird to you, be assured that it isn't. This super-powerful supercar competitor is a steal at its $100K+ price, and we'll tell you why. Also in the road test segment, Host Jack Nerad evaluated the 2024 Hyundai Santa Cruz small pickup on one of his frequent trips to the Palm Springs area. While a small pickup might not seem like the best choice for travel with his youngest daughter and wonderful wife, the Santa Cruz turned out to be more like a sports sedan with a huge trunk than a truck. Its 281-horsepower turbomotor got the party started, but it wasn't the whole story. We'll have the details. Finally, you probably heard that the Toyota Prius was named North American Car of the Year, but you probably don't know the inside story of how and why it won. DeLorenzo and Nerad, both members of the jury, will tell you in this episode. All that and more are coming up on America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

What cars do their drivers like the most? We'll have the answers for you in our in-depth look at the J.D. Power 2022 APEAL Study. The J.D. Power U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study measures owners' emotional attachment and level of excitement with their new vehicle. This year the recently launched Kia EV6 compact SUV and Mercedes-Benz EQS large premium car were two battery-electric vehicles that topped their respective segments. But the vast majority of segment leaders in emotional appeal are conventional gasoline-powered cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs. The Jeep Wagoneer UV, Jeep Grand Wagoneer premium SUV, Kia Carnival minivan, and Hyundai Santa Cruz midsize pickup were newcomers to the market that top their segments. Consumer excitement with their vehicles actually fell this year, breaking a streak of increases that dates back to 2014. It is only the fifth time in the 27-year history of the study that consumer excitement with their vehicles declined year over year. And we'll have more, including information on how Tesla owners feel about their cars. In this week's road test segment, host Jack Nerad will give his take on the new, cutting-edge 2023 Genesis GV60. It's the first dedicated electric vehicle from the Genesis brand. The GV60's new-as-tomorrow features include facial and fingerprint recognition. Plus the vehicle actually has a crystal ball. Also in the road test segment, Co-Host Chris Teague went truckin' crazy in the substantially new 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X. The full-size pickup truck is designed to slug it out off-road, and Teague and Nerad will offer their opinions of it in this episode. Our special guests this week are Brian Kursar, group vice president, Digital Technology at Toyota Motor North America, and Simon Roberts, Managing Engineer - Cabin Awareness at Toyota Connected North America. Toyota has been improving its infotainment systems by leaps and bounds recently, and we'll discuss how they've been able to accomplish that with them. In the news, Chevrolet just introduced an all-new Blazer EV that promises to be blazing fast. We were there for the unveiling and will tell you all about it. And Honda has unleashed the newest Civic Type R, so we'll tell you all about that too. All this and more in this episode of America on the Road.

In this On the Move, hosts Matt Avery and John Kraman kick things off with an eye toward the upcoming Orlando Summer Special. Part of the conversation centers on one of the stars crossing the auction block: a 1987 Buick GNX. One of just 547 produced, the Jet Black bruiser shows a scant 55 miles on the odometer and comes with copies of the window sticker and dealer invoice. From there, the guys dish on their attendance at the Motor Press Guild's Drive Day held in the canyons of Malibu, California. With the event featuring some of the latest vehicles, Matt and John give their thoughts on back-to-back time behind the wheel of the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick. Then, it's on to the rumors surrounding the upcoming seventh-generation Mustang, with all indicators pointing to an April 2023 release. In the latter part of this week's episode, Mike Copeland is on the line. Mike is CEO of Arrington Performance and wowed the guys at last year's SEMA show with a radical, classic Chevrolet pickup. Under the hood was a late-model powertrain that used hydrogen as its fuel source. Mike fills Matt and John in on how the wild build came together and gives a glimpse of what the future could look like with more widespread adoption of the alternative propellant.
They shook the magic eight ball and it came up "trucks." Sami and Benjamin dive into some rugged, practical machines this week, with Mr.Hunting starting with a closer look at the 2022 Honda Ridgeline. Now facing stiff competition from new trucklets like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, how can the Ridgeline stay appealing to shoppers? Benjamin points out a few of the flaws in Honda's approach, and the two brainstorm what is needed from the Japanese automaker to keep its name in peoples mouths. Then Sami jumps into the 2022 Kia Telluride, a former darling of the automotive media. The Kia had also seen new rivals in the form of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L and the Nissan Pathfinder. Can it still keep up? Should shoppers wait for the newly announced 2023 model? Sami jumps into each of those questions with reckless abandon and little time to think, so be ready for off-the-cuff answers. Finally the two talk automotive news and Apples automotive dashboard design that's a part of iOS16, before Benjamin shares an update on his Datsun. For the North American market, the compact truck is dead. At least, that's how it looked after the once compact pickups from Ford, Chevrolet and others moved to their current, larger directions. That left folks relying on their aging compact trucks, moving to a larger vehicle or switching out of a truck in general. Well, Hyundai saw a space for compact trucks when it showed off the Santa Cruz concept at the 2015 Detroit auto show. Despite doubts of the truck actually making it to the assembly line, Hyundai pushed forward with the Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz launched in 2021 as a 2022 model year. Powering the Santa Cruz is either a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder that makes 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque, or a turbocharged 2.5-liter I4 that makes 281 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. This power travels through an eight-speed automatic before hitting the front wheels or all four wheels by way of the all-wheel-drive system. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz and puts it through its paces. Wren guides you around the Hyundai Santa Cruz to highlight its styling and features and then takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to those segments, Wren chats with Mark Vaughn about the Santa Cruz, the market for compact trucks and if the Santa Cruz is a pickup. Closing the show, the two talk about what makes this Hyundai special.

Depending upon perspective, Elon Musk is the most important person in the show business of automobiles or he's the industry's constant enigma. Or, maybe he's both at the same time. Anyway, Musk is never content and nor are his Tesla products ever status quo. With a few recent days, Musk announced Tesla wouldn't offer any new models in 2022, including the now delayed debut of the Tesla Cybertruck. A few days later, Tesla had the first of three recalls so far in 2022. Bruce and I discuss the recent Tesla issues and Musk's continuous souring relationship with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Bruce and talk about the issue and Musk's expanding image of a human deflector shield. The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup truck is a debut vehicle for the South Korean manufacturer. One of the hottest trends in the industry is the of new smaller trucks. Hyundai not too long ago introduced its new unibody Santa Cruz. I recently reviewed it for a week and was enamored by the South Korean manufacturer's maiden voyage in the truck lightweight truck segment. Bruce and I also discuss the Santa Cruz and the pending arrival of other new trucks from Ford to Rivian, Chevrolet to Ram. And we also discuss top-10 finalists for World Car of the Year honors. The list and the eventual winner are connected to the marketing of the New York International Auto Show. It's scheduled for April 15-24, with the awards in many categories announced April 13. The list of the top-10 finalists couldn't be more diverse — The Ford Mustang Mach-E to the Toyota GR86. Please join Bruce and me this week for another lively 30 minutes of our weekly podcast.
