Groovy kind of love Carole writes Howie:  When I'm feeling blue, all I have to do...   Thank you for that.   Howie writes Carole:  22 Jan 2003 00:05:14 -0500   Thanks.  I sort of regretted possibly creating the impression that tomorrow was some big confession or something.  You are so unusual in not asking questions and just waiting for me to bring up something.  But on the other hand, from this point on if there ever is something you are curious about or would like to ask, I'd like you to feel free to ask and I'll try to answer.   I feel like writing tonight.   One thing I would like you to be aware of is my religious background.  By birth I'm Jewish.  I have not practiced since I left home, and my family was never very religious.  I have no negative feelings about Judaism and have not "officially" ever abandoned it.  It just seemed to me that the whole thing was pretty well summed up in the Golden Rule and the rest was ritual.  Being Jewish is a little different from most religions in that it is to some extent not just a religion but also an ethnic background, like being Italian.  To my Jewish friends and my family, I'm Jewish, and occasionally get invited to a holiday meal.  My beliefs, as I think you have seen, run much more along spiritual lines, believing firmly in some life force in the Universe that is part of all living things, and a "soul" or "spirit" in each of us that is the portion of that life force that resides in us.  And I think that some form of reincarnation is very likely.   I would like to know your church because it is such an important part of your life and, for me, part of knowing and understanding you.  And even if I can never share some of the beliefs, I may well learn some things that I will benefit from.  And at a minimum, may simply find some peaceful minutes.  I went to Mary's church the day my old friend Dell died just to be able to be in a "house of God" as the right place for the feelings I had that day.   Switching topics, it tends to be human nature to find most desirable what we cannot have, and take for granted what we do have.  Aside from the awkwardness of saying or writing something that feels "mushy" to me, I think a part of me feels like if I share thoughts that show too much interest in you, I become part of the pack of admirers and less desirable.  Not saying this is the case - rather, it is another little insight I find as I look inside for reasons for my own behavior.   My favorite relative after my brother is my cousin Alan in Miami.  He is about 74, the guy who "talked" me into going to law school.  He is not just a brilliant trusts and estates lawyer, but someone who I admire for just having pure wisdom.  He was my mother's favorite younger cousin, and now I think he and I have the same relationship.  He had a long unhappy first marriage, then late in life married his current wife.  I don't think I know of a better marriage.   When I was in Miami in December I told him about you.  I hope you won't mind, but I showed him your poem, because I thought he was one of the few people who would appreciate it.  I have to confess and hope you'll understand that at the time, to me you were sort of new and interesting but had not really gotten past my barriers.  (And speaking of "bulldozing", where did you put them?)  Anyway, he became President of your fan club by the end of the poem.  I sent him a little update recently and he sent me the email below.  I thought it was wonderful, and wanted to share it with you when I got it but felt that "wince" that I get so I didn't.  Tonight I'm ignoring the wince.  Here is what he sent me:   When you are not with her, would you like to be? Would you like to wake up next to her in the morning and go to sleep with her at night? Do you often think about her when you are not with her? If you were able to change her, what changes (IF ANY) would you make?  Do you admire what she has done with her life up to this point? Do you think she is intelligent out-of-bed? When the party is over, do you want to go home or have her go home? Are you concerned that she have a nice day? If she concerned that you have a nice day? Do you really listen when she is talking about what her day was like or will be like? Does she listen when you talk? Does she know that you really can't afford the lifestyle that goes with a $60,000 - $65,000 Mercedes? I assume she knows you are Jewish.  Is she religious? Then turn the questions around from her point of view, such as: How would she change you if she could? I once dated a woman who thought I should dress differently. That was the straw that broke the camel's back quick!!! - Alan   Maybe someday I'll even show you my answers!  :-)   Do you think I should dress differently?  :-)  Like maybe always just wear the tool belt?   Incidentally, Alan is one of those people who still can't believe I wrote the check for the car.  When I pulled up in his driveway with it the first time, he stared at it in disbelief.  He looked at me oddly and said, "You know, in recent years when you told me what you were doing, I always wondered if you were actually making a living.  I guess you were."  What he does not understand is that the gas costs the same for this as the other cars.   This psychic thing is getting out of hand now.   Last night it was the fleeting vision floating by me.  The remarkable part of that, by the way, is that it was not in a dream.  I was awake, or maybe half way between awake and asleep.  But now, disk jockeys are starting to read my mind.  On the ride home tonight, as I was thinking of you, they played "Groovy kind of love".  I had never paid attention to the words before.  They mean something now.   Boy, in the morning if I read this I'm gonna really be embarrassed.  I think I better stop and try to go to sleep.  Have a nice day today (I assume it is now morning when you read this.)  Looking forward to seeing you in the afternoon.   Carole writes Howie:  22 Jan 2003 08:41:18 EST   You may recall that Jesus was a Jew as were all of the apostles and most of the disciples.  The Old Testament has been proven to be an extremely accurate book of history and geography and was almost entirely about the Jews.  As I said in an earlier email, the Dead Sea Scrolls have shown that in all the thousands of years of translations, nothing was lost from the texts of the period.  There is no living proof that Jesus did the miracles that the New Testament claims, except for the fact that a disproportionate percentage of the population was so convinced at the time that they were willing to suffer brutal persecution.  The most compelling evidence of Jesus Deity, in my mind, is the hundreds of prophecies he fulfilled from the Old Testament.  In just a three hour period, just before his crucifixion, he fulfilled over a hundred of them and he was doing it from a situation that he could not control.   To have any belief in Christ, a Christian has to have a very good understanding of the Jewish law and their history.  I lived with Alan Schreier for two years who was a practicing Jew and he got a big kick out of having his Christian girlfriend explain to all of his Jewish friends their own rituals and what they meant.  My attorney is Jewish.  My alias in the real estate world for the past 20 years is Gilda Goldman. Bob's last name is Solomon.  One of my closest volunteers was Susan Aronoff.  She and her father spent countless hours discussing modern Judaism with me and it only vaguely resembles Judaism of the Bible.  I don't know much about Jewish practices today, but I have a very strong background in the origins of the faith and the people.  You are, by all rights, one of God's chosen people.  How could I find any fault with that?   If you could see the wonderful way that your letter affected me this morning you would not be at all embarrassed for having sent it.  I am honoured that you shared our feelings with Alan.  There is nothing that I wish to hide, and if there ever should be, I would let you know when I tell you.  I think you would know the difference without me having to say anything anyway.   I haven't seen anything in you that I even think needs changing, but I have been around enough to know that even if I did, it wouldn't happen.  If you don't like a person just exactly like they are, you are never going to like them.  People change but they do it for their own reasons.  My friend Bill is 51 and says that people in our age range, who are single, are almost always rehab projects.  To use your term, we can't live this long without baggage, but what I like about myself is that I expect to take care of those things myself and am not looking for someone to fix nor rescue me.  You seem even more self sufficient.  I am going to send this while I write the rest.  I write very slowly as I started this letter an hour ago.  My typing is not bad.  I just try to think through every word so that I do not cause misconception.  It was good to hear your voice this morning.  I am even worse on the phone than in person when it comes to communication. - Carole   Later that night Carole writes Howie,   Dear Howie, I just got through with the Spay Neuter group and am about to do the dishes and hit the sack.  I hope your meeting and acupuncture went well.   As I read (and re-read) your last notes I wondered if I am pushing you too fast?  I have a tendency to bulldoze my way through life and while it serves me well to do so in business and fundraising it could feel less than gentle to your spirit.  We have our whole lives to get to know each other and I want you to feel comfortable in every aspect of the process.   Unlike your suggestion to me of mentally committing to a certain time frame, I don't typically set dead lines, and in our getting to know each other, I am much more apt to just let things unfold as they will.  My opposition to dead lines usually means do it now and it will be done when it's called for later, but that doesn't seem like a reasonable way to approach an affair of the heart.   This whole paragraph illustrates the fact that I am in uncharted water and don't know what to do, but the good news is that there is no rush.  I have to laugh out loud, because this has been your advice to me from the beginning.  Guess it was pretty good advice after all, eh?   I still want to know every thing about you.  I just want it to be in your time and as your comfort level allows. Who Is He? What man is this, who knows my heart? How does he know the way I feel? Is this a dream I'll soon wake from And find that this was never real?   He knows, with eloquence, precise All that I fear and cannot say Accepting and not judging in His own kind, gentle, loving way   His spirit reaches out with light That heals me like the summer sun And leaves me awestruck, wondering Who is this very special One?   Is he a dream I've conjured up A fantasy of flesh and bone That makes the perfect vessel for A spirit like I've never known?   Is he the other half of me? The one I've long been searching for? If this is true, if this is real How could I ever want for more?   Time will tell, as it always does The reason we have come to be Both standing on the crossroads at This point along eternity.   For Howie Baskin By Carole Ann Stairs 1/22/03   I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/   I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.     You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! Sermon Notes for If Any of You Lacks Wisdom Let Him Ask of God The title of this morning's sermon is, “If Any of You Lacks Wisdom Let Him Ask of God.” Go ahead and open your Bibles to James 1. We've reached an important point in our series. You could say we've been building up to this sermon. I said I wanted to preach on wisdom, and in particular how wisdom helps us navigate through trials, and that's the topic of this message. The previous sermons laid the foundation for this one. Let me begin with a story that illustrates why this is so important to me… When I became a Christian in my early twenties I knew almost nothing about the bible. One of God's graces was surrounding me with men who had two things in common. First, they knew the bible well. Second, they were happy to answer all my questions. And there were many of them. One of the influential men in my life at that time was Barry Branaman. I've mentioned him a few times before. He would stay up late after the study that took place at his house helping me understand the Bible. He died unexpectedly a few years ago, and I'm thankful for any opportunity to honor his name. Hebrews 11:4 says Abel speaks even though he is dead and I feel like Barry still speaks even though he's dead through his investment in me. Hopefully on this side of heaven we're all investing in people and we speak through them long after we're gone. One other thing Barry did for me, was direct me to a few wonderful Christian books that he knew would be helpful.

SCP client vulnerabilities, BSDs vs Linux benchmarks on a Tyan EPYC Server, fame for the Unix inventors, Die IPv4, GhostBSD 18.12 released, Unix in pictures, and more. ##Headlines ###scp client multiple vulnerabilities Overview SCP clients from multiple vendors are susceptible to a malicious scp server performing unauthorized changes to target directory and/or client output manipulation. Description Many scp clients fail to verify if the objects returned by the scp server match those it asked for. This issue dates back to 1983 and rcp, on which scp is based. A separate flaw in the client allows the target directory attributes to be changed arbitrarily. Finally, two vulnerabilities in clients may allow server to spoof the client output. Impact Malicious scp server can write arbitrary files to scp target directory, change the target directory permissions and to spoof the client output. Details The discovered vulnerabilities, described in more detail below, enables the attack described here in brief. The attacker controlled server or Man-in-the-Middle(*) attack drops .bash_aliases file to victim’s home directory when the victim performs scp operation from the server. The transfer of extra files is hidden by sending ANSI control sequences via stderr. For example: user@local:~$ scp user@remote:readme.txt . readme.txt 100% 494 1.6KB/s 00:00 user@local:~$ Once the victim launches a new shell, the malicious commands in .bash_aliases get executed. *) Man-in-the-Middle attack does require the victim to accept the wrong host fingerprint. ###FreeBSD 12.0 vs. DragonFlyBSD 5.4 vs. TrueOS 18.12 vs. Linux On A Tyan EPYC Server Last month when running FreeBSD 12.0 benchmarks on a 2P EPYC server I wasn’t able to run any side-by-side benchmarks with the new DragonFlyBSD 5.4 as this BSD was crashing during the boot process on that board. But fortunately on another AMD EPYC server available, the EPYC 1P TYAN Transport SX TN70A-B8026, DragonFlyBSD 5.4.1 runs fine. So for this first round of BSD benchmarking in 2019 are tests of FreeBSD 11.2, FreeBSD 12.0, DragonFlyBSD 5.4.1, the new TrueOS 18.12, and a few Linux distributions (CentOS 7, Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS, and Clear Linux) on this EPYC 7601 server in a variety of workloads. DragonFlyBSD 5.4.1 ran fine on this Tyan server and could boot fine unlike the issue encountered on the Dell PowerEdge R7425 for this particular BSD. But on the Tyan server, DragonFlyBSD 5.2.2 wouldn’t boot so only this latest DragonFlyBSD release series was used as part of the comparison. A summary of the operating systems tested for this EPYC 7601 OS benchmark comparison included: DragonFlyBSD 5.4.1 - The latest release of Matthew Dillon’s operating system while using the HAMMER2 file-system and GCC 8.1 compiler that is now the default system compiler for this BSD. FreeBSD 11.2 - The previous stable release of FreeBSD. Installed with a ZFS file-system. FreeBSD 12.0 - The latest stable release of FreeBSD and installed with its ZFS option. TrueOS 18.12 - The latest release of the iX systems’ FreeBSD derivative. TrueOS 18.12 is based on FreeBSD 13.0-CURRENT and uses ZFS by default and was using the Clang 7.0.1 compiler compared to Clang 6.0.1 on FreeBSD 12.0. CentOS Linux 7 - The latest EL7 operating system performance. Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS - The latest Ubuntu Long Term Support release. Clear Linux 27120 - The latest rolling release as of testing out of Intel’s Open-Source Technology Center. Clear Linux often reflects as close to the gold standard for performance as possible with its insanely tuned software stack for offering optimal performance on x86_64 performance for generally showing best what the hardware is capable of. Throughout all of this testing, the Tyan 2U server was kept to its same configuration of an AMD EPYC 7601 (32 cores / 64 threads) at stock speeds, 8 x 16GB DDR4-2666 ECC memory, and 280GB Intel Optane 900p SSD benchmarks. ##News Roundup National Inventors Hall of Fame honors creators of Unix Dennis Ritchie (Posthumous) and Ken Thompson: UNIX Operating System Thompson and Ritchie’s creation of the UNIX operating system and the C programming language were pivotal developments in the progress of computer science. Today, 50 years after its beginnings, UNIX and UNIX-like systems continue to run machinery from supercomputers to smartphones. Easy, ha? Imagine, it is 2019 and you want to turn off IPv4. Like, off off. Really off. Not disabling IPv6, but disabling IPv4. Two steps back You might be coming here wondering, why would anybody want to do what we are asking to be done. Well, it is dead simple: We are running data centers (like Data Center Light) with a lot of IPv6 only equipment. There simply is no need for IPv4. So why would we want to have it enabled? Also, here at ungleich, we defined 2019 as the year to move away from IPv4. The challenge Do you like puzzles? Competitions? Challenges? Hacking? Well. If ANY of this is of your interest, here is a real challenge for you: We offer a 100 CHF (roughly 100 USD) for anyone who can give us a detailed description of how to turn IPv4 completely off in an operating system and allowing it to communicate with IPv6 only. This should obviously include a tiny proof that your operating system is really unable to use IPv4 at all. Just flushing IPv4 addresses and keeping the IPv4 stack loaded, does not count. ###GhostBSD 18.12 released GhostBSD 18.12 is an updated iso of GhostBSD 18.10 with some little changes to the live DVD/USB and with updated packages. Chantel and Mark dive into 10 listener submitted questions in this thyroid information filled episode! Sit back, take some notes, and enjoy this Episode of the Intermittent Fasting Podcast! TIMECODES: Question 1- 3:22 Q: It seems like “Gluten-Free” is a big buzz word right now! A lot of my friends eat Gluten Free, and the other day my girl friend told me I should consider eating this way because of my thyroid issues. Could you explain how glutten affects your thyroid? Beth in Virginia Beach A: There is definitely a buzz going around about going gluten free these days! I tell people all the time that no foods should be off limits, UNLESS they negatively affect my body. As for me, I know that when I am only eating gluten in the 20 of my 80/20, my thyroid is going to trying to heal my thyroid, I cut gluten out completely, and went 100% Paleo. Is this sustainable? No, but I recommend people with Thyroid issues doing this for a limited time until they see improvement. Again, I eat gluten now, but it will be included in the 20% of my diet that I am not eating clean. Because of my thyroid issues, I feel better when I’ve cut out gluten, but I know that is not sustainable for the rest of my life, and I don’t like to ever feel deprived. Most doctors would agree that it is good for people with thyroid issues to eliminate or cut back on gluten. Although there are many factors involved in Hashimoto’s (which I was diagnosed with) and other autoimmune and thyroid-related conditions, going gluten-free can provide a huge benefit. Unfortunately, the evidence that those with Hashimoto’s benefit from a gluten-free diet is, so far, anecdotal. That doesn’t mean that it’s not true, just that it hasn’t yet been confirmed with science, or atleast any studies that I can find. My advice would be to try cutting it out for a short amount of time, and see how you feel! I am all about listening to your body! Question 2- 7:03 Q: My online research leads me to believe that I have thyroid issues, but I haven’t been to the doctor yet. Can you do an overview of the symptoms I should be keeping an eye on, and is there a way I can verify without going to the Doctor? Sarah in Arizona A: I compiled my top 10 Symptoms that I have noticed in myself and in others that I talk to. TIRED ALL THE TIME, even if you slept all night. Mood swings, depression or anxiety. Pain in the muscles and joints Being cold ALL the time, esp in your feet and hands. Weight gain, or being unable to lose weight. General hormonal issues- irregular periods, TERRIBLE PMS, low sex drive, and sadly, sometimes infertility Dry skin and hair, brittle nails Swelling in the neck Forgetfulness, haziness, or general brain fog 10.Constipation Those are the big things to look out for, but a lot of these symptoms can be the sign of something else as well, so I think it’s a great idea to check your thyroid at home. I recently purchased a Basal Body Temperature Thermometer. A lot of women use these when they are trying to get pregnant and are tracking their ovulation. They are more sensitive than a regular thermometer and allow you to track more closely.   Question 3- 13:50 Q: I’ve been taking Synthroid for almost a year now. Recently, I have read terrible things online about it. Should I try something more natural like Armor Thyroid? -Erin in Lynchburg A: A lot of people have complained of things like anxiety and irregular heart rate while on Synthroid. Some people also claim that Synthroid may actually worsen your condition, as the synthetic T4 may compete with your body's natural T4 for cellular receptor sites. I personally HATE taking medication of any kind, and hated that every time I went to the Doctor, he was upping my dose of Synthroid. I love that you are looking into a healthy alternatives, just like I was! In a previous podcast, I went deep on how I got myself off of Synthroid using Intermittent Fasting and a paleo diet. As for Armour Thyroid, I haven’t used this personally, but from what I understand, It is a natural product made from animal thyroid glands (usually a pig's). It replaces or provides more T3 and T4 hormones. When I did some research online, I found a lot of people still complaining of negative side effects still relating to their heartbeat, anxiety, periods, etc. Even though it is more natural than Synthroid and is natural, it is still a drug and in my opinion is still going to have some sort of side effect. I would recommend you give the Paleo diet a try if you are looking for the most natural way to get off those drugs, and definitely check out the podcast I did about this!   Question 4- 21:25 Q: What is the difference between T3, T4 and TSH? I’ve been trying to do some reading online all about thyroid and I am not understanding the difference between T3 T4 versus TSH. Can you explain these in an easy fashion where I can understand? -Angela in Pennsylvania A: So you’re your thyroid produces T3 and T4…a lot of people think that the TSH is a thyroid hormone, but it is ACTUALLY a pituitary hormone. TSH is your body’s gauge, or thermometer for the amount of thyroid hormones you have.  A lot of people also assume when their T3 and T4 are low that their TSH is also low, but the OPPOSITE is actually true. There is actually an INVERSE relationship between T3, T4, and TSH. So If your T3 and T4 are high, TSH will go down. And if your TSH is high, T3 and T4 will go down.  So if your pituitary gland senses that your Thyroid Hormones are low or high, it will send out TSH to help regulate it.   It’s actually pretty cool how these two types or hormones work together! Question 5- 27:29 Q: I am having trouble pooping since I’ve been doing intermittent fasting. I’ve always been a terrible pooper, and my thyroid is acting up. Do you think me not pooping has anything to do with my thyroid? Anonymous A: Yes, this absolutely has to do with your thyroid, because your thyroid issues will make you constipated! This is one of my least favorite symptoms of my thyroid issues! Constipation is a classic sign of hypothyroidism. Without enough thyroid hormone, many of the body’s functions slow down, and your digestive track is one of them, as it can weaken the contraction of the muscles lining the tract. Sometimes when I am really struggling and need to go, I will take a fiber drink like Metamucil which helps me. Coffee with coconut oil also helps me get moving, and of course, you will want to make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Question 6- 33:37 Q: I got some blood work done on my liver, and my doctor said that my liver is not in good shape. Do you think that has anything to do with my thyroid ? -Tracy in Chesapeake A: This is such a great question! There are so many people walking around with a thyroid problem but its secondary, or caused by  something else. The liver and thyroid work closely together since the liver converts thyroid hormones. 80% of thyroid functions actually occur through your liver. T4, one of the thyroid hormones we talked about earlier, is actually INACTIVE until the liver activates it to become T-3. So without a liver you cannot convert and make your thyroid work. If  your liver is damaged, chances are that is the source of your thyroid problem. If you have constipation that blocks your liver, that can also be a source of thyroid problems. It’s so amazing the way each part of our body is designed to work closely together. Question 7- 36:24 Q: I’ve noticed lately that my nails are super brittle and they have these little lines on them..I started doing some research online and it seems it could be thyroid related? I read that thyroid issues can also make your skin and hair dry- which mine are! Am I overanalyzing this too much…do I just need some lotion and a manicure! LOL Or do you think this is truly thyroid related? -Ashlyn in North Carolina A: Absolutely this is thyroid related. If there is a problem with a low thyroid, 1,000 enzymes will be blocked. That’s why you don’t have proteins to make healthy hair, you get vertical ridges on your nails, you get cold feet, you have problems with depression, you are tired, have decreased libido, digestive problems, constipation, you crave carbs! All of the symptoms we have previously discussed in this podcast.  So yes, some lotion and a manicure would help but you should definitely take a look at the deeper issue and look at naturally curing your thyroid. Question 8- 38:41 Q: How do I know when I started in a fat burning state? -Tara in Charleston A:  There is no scientific or precise way to figure this out, but what I recommend is to listen for your stomach growling because that’s when you know that your body is emptied out. The reason your stomach growls is because it’s your signal saying  HEY MY STOMACH IS EMPTY! The growling noise is your stomach contracting as it tries to find any food to eat that it may have missed earlier! This process cleans up any food that was missed earlier. When these muscle contractions get going again and your stomach is empty, those gas and air pockets make a lot more noise that you hear as stomach growling. I recommend waiting about two hours after your stomach growls to eat! It  s a great way to burn fat because during that two hours your body  diving into your fat cells and eating your fat for fuel! It is important that you are able to differentiate the sound of your body digesting food right after you ate, versus the empty, hollow sound of a true stomach growl. Question 9- 44:49 Q: Hey guys, I’m so thankful to have your show during my morning commute. Maybe it’s a synchronicity, but most of the questions I have about IF always seem to be answered in your podcast.  I’ve been doing IF for about 3 weeks now, and it’s definitely working for me. I’ve found that I have more energy and I am SOO much less crabby and cranky throughout the day.  I know you’ve mentioned PCOS in previous podcasts, and the advice was super helpful. I’ve recently starting feeling some changes in the way my body feels that I relate to my cycle: tender bosom (I love using that word whenever I get the chance lol), slight cramping, and other PMS-like symptoms (mood and cravings). I had my cycle just before starting IF, so experiencing these symptoms this “soon” is a bit out of character for my body. I have extremely irregular periods and I’m curious to know what about IF contributes to managing PCOS, if anything at all. I also was curious to know if you have ever heard of taking Metformin for PCOS (I’m not a diabetic, nor do I have any other ailments, outside of PCOS.) My midwife/nurse practitioner (I’m not pregnant, just prefer a midwife over doc for womanly care) suggests I should take Metformin to help regulate my periods, as an option outside of BC. I’m a little unsure if I want to go this route as I am usually hesitant to take medications “unnecessarily.” I’m not severely afflicted w/ PCOS, but it definitely causes me to be very irregular in my cycle. Do you think this could interfere with my IF journey, or do you think it could be an assistant to the benefits of IF? Any advice/info/opinions you have would be awesome! Jazzmin - MiamiA: Congratulations on 3 weeks of IF! I am so happy to hear that you are seeing great results. Keep up the great work! So PCOS is something that I have struggled with, and we discuss it in good detail in a previous podcast, which Jazzmin is referring to. If you missed that one, definitely go back and listen! The first part of the question, you’re talking about how you feel as if you are starting your period a little early, since you had one right before starting IF and have been doing it for 3 weeks. Most people will find that anytime you dramatically change your eating habits, IE going full Paleo, or cutting out carbs, etc, or change your eating patterns, IE Intermittent Fasting, you will see a little shift in your period. When I first started IF I noticed my period was irregular for a few months until it finally balanced out, it has been super regular ever since! The reason for this is really simple and actually good! Fat stores estrogen, so any time you start disrupting your fat stores, you are likely to have some cycle disruption as well. So while an early period may stink, it means that your body is eating it’s fat stores! Stick it out, and you will find that it regulates soon. As for Metformin, I have heard of people taking this as an alternative to birth control. It has not been approved by the FDA for treatment of PCOS, but many doctors are prescribing it for PCOS treatment because women with PCOS often have elevated insulin levels and are more likely to develop diabetes. SO…it will definitely help! But You will not enjoy some of the other “benefits” of Birth Control such as…..birth control LOL obviously, it won’t prevent pregnancy, and also it won’t help you with the excess facial hair that many women with PCOS experience. But you also won’t have to worry about the negative effects of birth control that some people complain about such as  weight gain, and more dangerous, blood clots. As Metformin relates to IF, I can’t find any research that leads me to believe that it would interfere with IF in a negative way. But, I do recommend taking it with your first meal of the day, and not on an empty stomach. Like I mentioned in the podcast where we talked about  PCOS, and as my doctor told me, if you struggle with PCOS the absolute best thing you can do for your body is to be at your ideal “healthy” weight and I am not sure where you are weight wise, but I know that since you started your IF journey three weeks ago, you are well on your way if not there already.  Question 10- 51:07 Q: I have noticed I am staying up a lot later at night not sure if it is from the IF?  Perhaps I have more energy or something and sometimes it is hard to wind down.  Right now it is after 1 am and a few nights I was up to after 3 and could not fall asleep until around 4 or 5.  I already have to take 50 mg of lorazepam most nights to stop me from thinking so I can sleep.  It would be great if I could get off of that also.  I have only had to take it for the last several years, I am 61.  Before that I slept just fine.  I don't drink much coffee maybe half a cup twice a day especially on the days I did not get enough sleep.  I also try to do 1 cup of decaf green tea and sometimes one of the sleepy time teas later in the evening.  I can go several days with no coffee so not sure why I am wound up longer at night?  Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks again so much!  Have a blessed weekend! Jean A: Well Jean, you are a lot like me!!! As I say over and over again, I hate taking drugs unnecessarily too, and I can relate to you wanting to get off that Lorazepam. You didn’t mention in the question how long you have been Intermittent Fasting, but if you are newer to the Intermittent Fasting lifestyle, unfortunately this can be normal while your body gets adjusted. I’ve heard several reasons for this, one is that when you are fasting your body is hyped up on adrenaline. You didn’t mention what exactly your eating window is, but if you are eating your last meal 4-5 hours before bedtime, you could try bumping your eating window up an hour or so later and seeing if this helps. Another reason is increased caffeine intake- a lot of people will drink extra caffeine when they are fasting, but it sounds like this is not the issue for you, you’ve really cut back on your caffeine intake, it sounds. The only thing I would say in that department is maybe stick to strictly sleepy time tea in the evening, as sometimes even in Decaf Green Tea there will be traces of caffeine. You didn’t mention in your question if you work out or not, but if you are working out in the second half of the day, you may find that this is making it difficult for you to wind down. I recommend working out in the morning if your schedule allows..I start my day with a workout at 5:45 every day and for this reason, I NEVER have an issue falling asleep at night! Overall, I think that as your body becomes more accustomed to the Intermittent Fasting lifestyle, you will find yourself sliding back into your old sleeping patterns. In the meantime, you could also take something natural like Melatonin, or try something I LOVE to do at night, and that is to diffuse Lavender essential oils by my bed.

How to know when your cards are right

The most important moment of casting a spread is knowing when to stop shuffling. This is a scary thing if we think too much about it because even one shuffle too much gives us completely random cards. Some people think that we need to let our clients shuffle the deck and cut, or tell us when to stop shuffling, or just shuffle the cards 6 or 7 times. If ANY of these things actually worked we'd all be millionaires, because clients would force money on is to answer all of life's most pressing questions. Unfortunately none of those method work, so today's free lesson is all about how to know when to stop shuffling your cards. When you are preparing to cast a spread (to answer a question) you need to have a question in mind, and you should be shuffling. LET THE GODS DECIDE when the cards are right. Never think you are smarter than the universe, and never try to force the cards to be in order just because you don;t want to shuffle any more, or you are getting nervous about how long it is taking to get your "ding!" of awareness that the top cards are in the right order. Stretch out your senses and extend your awareness into your cards while you are shuffling. Do this with the intent of "feeling" the answer in the form of the cards you need (for your spread) being in the right order. Shuffle, cut, shuffle, shuffle . . . you will feel it closing in. Then you will get a "ding!" (like a tiny bell) of awareness that the cards are "just right" for this spread.   So, how do we get there? Well, if you have been practicing the exercises in The Easiest Way to Learn the Tarot EVER!! and Advanced Tarot Secrets or , then you will be well on your way to knowing all of this. BUT, if not, today's lesson will help. It runs about an hour and I gave Laura a few different examples and techniques, all of which work amazingly well for my students. So I hope that you enjoy this free lesson. Please post any comments that you have, and thanks for being here.
