Alexandra (Alex) Ridout is a young jazz trumpeter from the UK, now residing in New York City. In this episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds, she lays out her journey as a musician, comparing the experiences and educational backgrounds between the UK and the US. Ridout recalls her time at the Royal Academy of Music in London and Manhattan School of Music, emphasizing her family's influence, especially her jazz musician parents. Highlighting her musical achievements, the conversation includes her participation and victory in the BBC Youth Competition, winning at 17 years old. She talks about her association with renowned musicians and mentors, including trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, now Dean of Jazz Arts at the Manhattan School of Music, and her involvement with the all-female group, Artemis. As with many women in the jazz industry, the topic of women's growing strength emerges. She also addresses the challenges and realities of the recording industry today, stressing the importance of patience and genuine passion in pursuing a music career. The conversation culminates with her upcoming performance on International Jazz Day and a surprise familial discovery. Alexandra Ridout generously allowed me to record portions of the show she and her quintet performed at their concert, hosted by A Tribe for Jazz as part of their 2024 International Jazz Series for International Jazz Day. This episode provides two tracks from the show and one from her Remote Duets EP that can be found at Bandcamp.com. The first track, “Compersion Song” (7:71), an original composition by Alexandra Ridout, features solos by Alex on trumpet, Tal Kalman - tenor sax, Iver Cardas – guitar and Karl Henrik-Ousbäck - drums. Rafael Enciso is on double bass. The second track is “BM Blues” (9:47), also written by Alexandra Ridout. The band members remain the same with soloists: Alexandra Ridout-trumpet, Iver Cardas – guitar, Tal Kalman - tenor sax and Karl Henrik-Ousbäck – drums. The third track heard near the end of the show is from Remote Duets Alexandra Ridout has on Bandcamp. The track is entitled “No Train” (3:41). Miles Midlin joins her on guitar. Timothy Ridout won last year's Concerto category at the Gramophone Awards for his Harmonia Mundi recording, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Martyn Brabbins, of Elgar's Cello Concerto transcribed by Lionel Tertis for viola, alongside the Bloch Suite for Viola and Orchestra. His new HM release continues his exploration of the huge role that Tertis played in the history of the viola, as player, teacher, arranger and champion of the instrument. Ridout's new double album, for which he's joined by pianists Frank Dupree and James Baillieu, includes sonatas by York Bowen and Rebecca Clarke, as well as many shorter works with powerful links to Tertis. James Jolly met up with Timothy to talk about the album, and the place that Tertis holds for viola-players.

Welcome back to Emily Ridout... I am so excited by this episode for many many reasons. The number one reason is that Emily is the best - an absolute superstar of the astrology world (and I am not talking tabloid horoscopes here). She is the real deal when it comes to talking about the impact that the sun, moon, stars etc have on us on a deep level. Secondly she is so knowledgable about so much and I learn something every time I either speak to Emily or watch her incredible Instagram feeds. I can guarantee that you will learn lots of things from just listening to this episode. Thirdly, Emily is the first guest that I have had back on to be interviewed again. I love trying new things with Women In Confidence and when Emily contacted me to ask if we could record an episode again I jumped in with both feet. If you want to learn even more from Emily then she is running her flagship course, starting on the 19th October. The course is called https://www.emilyridout.com/astrologyacademy (Astrology Academy) and you should check it out. If you sign up to Astrology Academy please let her know that you have listened to her on Women In Confidence as I know she will be thrilled you have heard the episode. And if you want even more from Emily then she is also an AstroYoga teacher and expert - If you Google here she the Number 1 name there. She has kindly sent me an AstroYoga video to share with my listeners and https://youtu.be/8uFOUWxB_XU (That link is here.) I absolutely loved the Astro Yoga course and I'm so happy I found it, literally by accident in a google search! I have been an astrologer and yoga teacher for over 10+ years, and I'm so grateful that I can now combine my two passions together in this magical way. The course itself was so easy to follow from one lesson to the next, there is so much information and knowledge weaved into it, and it's clear Emily is an expert in her field. I loved that the course was offered online as it means that those of us who live in the Southern Hemisphere are able to sign up & take the course virtually. I can't thank Emily enough for this beautiful offering and for creating this community of Astro Yogi's. -Jesslyn Miller ASTROLOGY ACADEMY Learn to read and activate your birth chart in your everyday life.
