Send us Fan MailKevin is a former Long Island music teacher AND a very high level musician himself. Having understood the classroom, the students, and the demands of teaching, he ultimately made the decision to leave the classroom and start his own business doing speaking engagements to students across the country. At one point, he went to pick up a $20 pizza, but knew he only had $17 to his name. Credit cards were maxed out, nothing in checking or savings. All of these experiences led him to where he is today as a successful speaker and businessman. Kevin talks about how to get out of debt and some interesting things to consider with the advent of AI and how it can help teachers in a variety of areas.

Journey through two decades of island reggae with Walt G of Kawao as he shares the remarkable path from baseball fields to Hawaiian music stardom. What began as neighbors jamming on ukuleles evolved into one of Hawaii's most beloved musical groups, with hits like "Girl, Let Me Know" becoming local classics.Walt offers rare insight into the band's creative process, revealing how China's melodic humming sparks the songwriting that has defined their signature sound. From recording with legendary producer Wendo Chin to their current collaboration with rising star Pena bu, Walt chronicles how their music has evolved while staying true to their roots. Music fans will appreciate his thoughtful perspective on the full-circle nature of island reggae, as he describes how today's artists are blending traditional sounds with contemporary styles.Beyond music, Walt shares his parallel life as a Dean of Students, former baseball player,  coach, and devoted family man. His candid discussion about maintaining faith and values in the entertainment industry provides a refreshing look at navigating temptations while staying grounded. When describing the shifting landscape for today's youth, Walt's passionate insights on respect, problem-solving, and the double-edged sword of technology reveal his deep commitment to nurturing the next generation. The conversation culminates with Walt's golden advice for aspiring musicians: "Do it because you love it, not because you want status." This philosophy has guided his 20-year career and explains why Kawao continues to connect with audiences across generations. Whether you're a longtime fan of Hawaii's music scene or curious about the authentic voices behind island reggae, this episode offers a heartfelt glimpse into the life of an artist who has balanced creative passion with core values.Discover Kawao latest album on all streaming platforms and follow them @Kawaomusic on social media to keep up with new releases and performances.

Nick Hexum is best known as the frontman of the band 311, which has now been together for over 30 years. In fact, their 1995 breakthrough release, commonly and affectionately referred to as "the Blue Album," turns 30 years old on July 11, 2025—just one day before their concert in their hometown of Omaha, NE, for 89.7 The River's 30th birthday bash. Throughout 311's career, they have released 14 studio albums, many of which reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200 charts. The band has maintained its longevity through constant touring and by building a loyal, worldwide fanbase. In the eyes of many—including myself—311 is summertime's most favorite band. In 2025, Nick is taking his creativity to another level by releasing what he describes as 25 solo songs across multiple EPs. The first two, "Waxing Nostalgic" and "Full Memories," dropped in February and April of this year. These solo releases showcase a noticeable shift toward vulnerability and transparency. The themes revolve around coming to terms with one's relationship with nostalgia while also looking ahead to the future. A strong influence in this material is Nick's role as a father, husband, and all-around family man, resulting in a refreshing honesty conveyed through well-crafted Americana music. As a long time 311 fan, I personally, have been trying to manifest this conversation for five years and am glad to have had the opportunity to express my gratitude to Nick in this episode.

Welcome to the Long Weekend Edition of the Mulligan Stew Podcast... And because it's a long weekend, we have a longer podcast – two of them actually. Starting things off is the birthday boy Bruce Allen – One of Canada's most successful talent managers EVER!! Bruce and his world-class team are responsible for planning,  leading and supporting the careers of Bryan Adams, Michael Buble, Bob Rock, Jann Arden and The Offspring. When you get the attention of Bruce all bets are off. You can fire questions off in every direction. The thing is you have to be prepared to have the answers smack you upside the HEAD. I wanted Bruce's thoughts on the loss of our mutual friend Red Robinson – The Last DJ.  And the loss of Gordon Lightfoot as well. Then we talked about the state of today's music business. Like throwing a steak to a pit bull. Bruce then launches into an update on the 2023 years of Offspring,  Jann, Bryan, Michael and Bob Rock. Rock has released an album with the late Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip. It's amazing. Bruce has that story as well.. Happy Birthday Happy Bruce!! Bob Rock interview to follow soon.   The second interview is with Doug Cox, the artistic director of the Vancouver Island Music Festival. July 14-16  in Courtney/Comox. Every year I'm fascinated by Doug's artist lineups. This year the headliners are Sarah McLachlan, Rickie Lee Jones and The Bros. Landreth. He asked Roy Forbes to return to his BIM character and revisit the tracks from his Thistles Album. Two legends. Dave Alvin and Jimmy Dale Gilmore with The Guilty Ones. Here's Doug  Cox with backgrounds on all those artists and more.   NEXT WEEK – The Artistic Directors of Folk Festivals in Calgary, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Canmore. PLUS Terry Wickham reveals his lineup for Edmonton Folk Fest.   Have a memorable weekend - tdm

A unique jewel in its time, AIR Montserrat, built and run by Sir George Martin, as part of the era of destination studios, has fascinated many, including Markus and Ray.How and why Brian came to the project via an epiphany of sorts is discussed, and he explains how he went from looking into Martin's Caribbean recording oasis to visiting it in its current state. Beyond the glitz and glamour, he found the deeper stories of the studio; it's equipment and construction challenges, and most importantly, the people. Whether they worked at the studio or not, the people of the island made every artist's journey a better experience. Paul is psychotherapist, in his 50s, from England, and our conversation left me rather speechless… so sit down, pour yourself a drink, and have a listen. Happy Halloween. Kevin McLeod - "Careless Truth" - Jazz Guitarist Building the Bridge Between New York City & The Long Island Music Scene

Steve has a conversation with an old high school friend and explores his art and process. Kevin McLeod is a  guitarist who crosses genres with ease from jazz, to rock, folk, the blues, and back again. Kevin is one of those artists who has a standing both in New York City and Long Island. Kevin's music speaks to social justice issues as well as the pain of addiction, the scourge of homelessness as well as the joy of love and life. About Kevin McLeodHttps://KevinMcLeodBand.comMusic has extraordinary transformative power, both for the musician and listener. It's what I'm always trying to tap into, regardless of the musical style or setting.Once upon a time music was an important part of a culture.  Songs were sung for joy and celebration, to ease the pain of life's troubles, and to transcend the boundaries between worlds. It is this lineage that inspires me to create.Kevin's most recent CD is called 'Careless Truth', which contains nine new songs. This is not pop music. The songs on Careless Truth come from the deeper traditions of American Music that inspire him - Blues, Jazz, Folk, and Rock influences are all present.  The lyrics and music were written as directly as possible, hence the album's title.  Some serious issues are addressed like homelessness, politics, depression, and addiction, as well as brighter topics like love and family life.  The album was recorded using many vintage guitars and amps and has a classic American Rock sound.  Kevin was happy to work with some fine musicians and record at an excellent studio. The Kevin McLeod Band is a six-piece group that takes my songs to the next level via inspired performances and group improvisation.  The band features some of the area's finest musicians.  I am also a member of the NYC Jazz group True To Life and LI Jazz group The Tone Healers.  I have appeared on cable TV programs such as Wes Houston Presents and played at NYC clubs such as The Way Station, The Shrine, The Sidewalk, Silvana, Googie's Lounge (Upstairs at The Living Room), CBGB's, The Alphabet Lounge, and Kavehaz. He has played for many festivals & folk music societies in addition to many cafes, clubs, & restaurants in the NY area and along the east coast. My music has been played on NY radio stations such as WBAB, WFUV, and WUSB, as well as other stations across the USA, Europe, and Australia. In addition to his own CDs, you can hear his guitar playing on releases by The Kathy Fleischmann Band, Kathy Fleischmann, Geoffrey Armes, The EVT Band, DeStefano & McLeod, Tom FitzPatrick, and Phil DeStefano.Connect with The Long Island Sound Podcast:Website: Https://GigDestiny.com/podcast Follow Steve Yusko, GigDestiny.com, and his adventures:  Website: https://www.GigDestiny.com  Twitter, The growth of The Long Island Sound Podcast has been exponential.
