Things happen when you're fighting for a championship. Jared Mees was once the top man in Progressive American Flat Track and Briar Bauman was just a young gun with big dreams. Bauman trained and worked with Mees, learned, and eventually became the new series champion. Bauman has won the last two titles and looked strong for a third, but Mees never gave up, even after a knee injury earlier this season. A late surge by Mees on his favored mile-long tracks has vaulted him to a slim points lead heading into this Friday's season finale at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The points are close enough to where whoever wins the race wins the title. Of course, such tight competition means Bauman and Mees are no longer friends like they used to be—it's just part of human nature. Jared Mees, a decorated veteran and 2004 AMA rookie of the year, finished the 2018 AFT Twins season with a championship, his second in many years. He finished with 10 wins, and a total of 15 podium finishes. 2018 marked his fifth AMA Grand National Championship. Mees is currently third in the standings and had a win at the Texas Half-Mile on April 20th. The win marks Mees’ 27th Half-Mile triumph, breaking a tie for second all-time with Will Davis.

In this week's episode, we're back "on track" and interviewing one of the biggest names in the modern era of flat track, Jared "The Jammer" Mees. He took time out of his busy schedule to chat with us about how his father got him into the sport, his championship seasons, his plans and expectations for the 2019 season.

Wiles is currently running in second place overall behind Jared Mees in the AFT Twins class presented by Vance and Hines. He has scored four podiums so far this season heading into the Peoria round. He has set records at the Peoria TT winning it 13 times in a row from 2004 to 2017.

Mees grabbed his second X Games Gold in three attempts in the six-rider Harley Davidson Flat track event. The 2018 X Games Minneapolis was held on an ultra-short track inside the U.S. Bank Stadium. Welcome back to this weeks episode of Throttled.  We had a great time with this little motorcycle podcast this week.  Both Kevin and Larry got some riding in, here are the details. Larry-Wednesday, 76 mile roundtrip to club meeting through traffic, Thursday ride to Talbott Motorcycle Museum in Castro Valley-a real treat! (280 round trip on Rever) Saturday, Poker run ride at Mt. Diablo H-D, another 160 or so. Great weather, beautiful roads, and a few other Switchbacks that I saw (2 others out of maybe 125 bikes) Brian Hunnicut invited me to a cornering class at the Little 99 raceway in Stockton, later this month, which I signed up for. Still having trouble imagining me circling the race track on my Harley Switchback. Could remove the windshield and bags, but I really think I want to practice with the bike as I usually ride it. Kevin was able to ride out and attend a local demo day for Indian this past week.  Here is what he rode and his impressions: Springfield Scout RoadMaster DarkHorse Springfield – same engine nice pull, comfortable ride easy to handle, not crazy about handlebar position for my size, same cramped riding position for those 5’11 and taller Scout – Doesn’t feel as small as it is, fun bike, instant power but sluggish top end. Hit the rev limiter earlier than I thought, Fun to ride handles great, wonderful around town or back road local ride bike. RoadMaster — much like the Springfield, liked the handlebar position much better since the bars were in front of me. Side Note – they had a Chieftain with Mini Apes, very comfortable to sit on, was able to take it around the block between rides and I liked the handle bar position the best, seemed to open up the cockpit for the upper body. DarkHorse – I liked this bike the best, Handling of the Springfield great feel, seemed to have a little more shake in the bike, not a ton just not as smooth at idle. Gave me more of a visceral connection to the bike. Ranking the bikes. Brad "The Bullit" Baker wins the Superprestigio in an epic battle with Marc Marquez. The factory Harley-Davidson rider put his mad skills to work on the perfectly prepared Superprestigio surface and put on a text book clinic to show the world just how good he is. From the opening practice session he demonstrated complete control over the field. Baker joins us LIVE tonight to discuss his victory as well as the overall experience of representing the USA in Barcelona! We will also get his thoughts on the 2016 AMA Pro Grand National Flat Track season ahead. Daytona is just around the corner. Jared Mees finished 3rd to give the USA two spots on the victory podium in Spain. Mees was recently crowned the 2015AMA Pro Grand National Champion in Las Vegas. Both of those results will be the focal point of our discussion with Mees. Jared and his wife, Nichole, recently announced that they were assuming the role of promoter at the Lima Half Mile National. We will discuss how that came about and what their plans are for the event going forward. The new Dunlop flat track specific tire was rolled out at DuQuoin in 2015. Mees rear tire was virtually worn out while the rest of the field had lots of rubber left. This created a controversy that continues even now. We get Jared's take on the topic. The heavy hitters of flat track join us tonight on Talking Motorcycles!   The 2014 AMA Pro Grand National Championship has arrived at it's final date for the season. The Pomona Flat Track Finals is at hand and the chase for the championship comes down to three riders. Two of the heavy hitters in Grand National competition are on the show tonight! Jared Mees has a 13 point lead coming into the final round. His Rogers Racing HD has performed beautifully all season long and Jared is riding at the top of his game. He will join us in this episode to discuss his strategy and plan to capture the title. Bryan Smith is in a slight deficit coming into the final round. But for an untimely oil leak on his Crosley Radio Villa Esparza Kawasaki at Calistoga he may certainly have the point lead for this weekend. Missing the Dash for Cash at Calistoga also took a bite out of his championship plans. We discuss his thoughts on the Pomona track, his Kawasaki as well as the competition he faces in this final round of competition. Gene Romeo, like so many others, followed the trail from Ascot to the Grand National Championship and the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
