This week, director Chloe Robichaud – whose charming, spiky new comedy Two Women is now playing in Toronto and Montreal, and expandng to Vancouver on Friday – celebrates Jean-Marc Vallee's 2011 masterwork Cafe de Flore, in which the late director shuffled and remixed two different love stories in two different time periods like the brilliant DJ he was. Your genial host Norm Wilner got a little choked up on this one.

Sometimes you need to break it all down to put it all back together, which is exactly what Hayley and Justin are thinking this week as they dissect 2015's Demolition, directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Naomi Watts, Chris Cooper and Judah Lewis -- a Blu-ray disc that J-Mo scooped up on a whim out of the Shoppers Drug Mart discount bin a few years ago not long after watching the 2014 JMV joint Wild. It's a bit of an odd-ball movie and its reputation is less than stellar, but both hosts find a lot to like in this emotionally stunted coming-of-age story that manages to side-step expectation at seemingly every turn. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along, it is currently streaming for free in Canada on Tubi at the time of publication. We'll be back next week with the back-half of this demolition derby, as we watch Stallone and Snipes go head-to-head in the lib-future action satire Demolition Man.

This week, as Ben Affleck's latest directorial effort AIR drops on Amazon Prime, we're finally popping in a DVD J Mo's been hauling around for nearly 15 years now: 2007's Gone Baby Gone, Affleck's debut in the director's chair -- from a script he co-wrote as well -- starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, Amy Ryan, Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman. Based on a novel by Dennis Lehane, coming hot off the heels of the critical success of Mystic River, Affleck's first film is morally ambiguous, thought provoking and emotionally evocative, and we had a nice time discussing its many strengths while avoiding getting bogged down in the grim details of its plot. PLUS: Justin's got another theatre report, this time on Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3. If you'd like to watch the film before listening, it is streaming on Netflix in Canada at the time of publication. We'll be back next week with the Jake Gyllenhaal self-destruction dramedy Demolition, directed by Jean-Marc Vallee.

Dennis connects via Zoom with theater director-actor & writer Ryan O'Connor to discuss Ryan's production of Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, which is currently playing at the Greenway Court Theatre in Los Angeles. He talks about the production's long journey to opening night, his casting of trans and non binary actors in major roles, reckoning with the play's period gender dynamics and bring croquet into the mix. Ryan and Dennis also bond over not loving the scripted show's so-called happy ending. Ryan also recalls how his mother and musical theater saved him from relentless bullying when he was an adolescent. He recalls being part of a reality competition Your Own Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star in 2011 and the heartbreak he felt when the show didn't hit and the fame he thought would happen, didn't. Other topics include: that time he was in the same room with Sondheim, spending quality time with Oprah, getting sober, being part of the "rain cover" scenes on Big Little Lies and watching Nicole Kidman have a bite of donut at craft services, working the the late director Jean-Marc Vallee, stumbling out of Lindsay Lohan's SUV and why he loves musicals. And after the interview, Dennis does about five minutes on Jennifer Lopez's fim Marry Me and why too much J Lo is never enough.

EP 245 is an insightful self-reflection on the fragility of life.  I recognized recently with the passing of filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallee, my own mortality. At 58 years old (the same age as he), I was struck by how quickly life can change, how much time I really do have left on this planet, and the age-old question of my own journey.  Am I running towards something, or running away?  Am I busy living, or am I busy dying?  At the end of the day, none of us get to define our timeline, but we do get to define how we spend what we have.  Are you spending wisely, are you defining your own growth and exploration, or is it being defined for you?  Questions worth our contemplation. I'll be releasing a little micro-course on my website to get you started in 2022 with your own personal reflection and direction www.lymlab.com

A career retrospective with Jake Gyllenhaal on December 1, 2016. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Jake Gyllenhaal, an Academy Award nominee, has established himself as one of the finest actors of his generation. With his new production company Nine Stories, he is also on his way to becoming a filmmaker of note – sourcing material, developing it from the ground up, collaborating with bold storytellers, and shepherding the projects through release. In 2014, he starred in Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler, which he also produced. For his performance as Louis Bloom, Mr. Gyllenhaal received BAFTA, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, Critics’ Choice, and Spirit Award nominations, as well as Best Actor citations from numerous critics’ groups. He received an Academy Award nomination, and won a BAFTA Award, for his performance as Jack Twist in Ang Lee’s classic Brokeback Mountain, also for Focus Features. Working with some of the world’s finest filmmakers on both independent and studio features, Mr. Gyllenhaal has also starred in David Ayer’s End of Watch, which he executive-produced; Dennis Villeneuve’s highly acclaimed Prisoners and Enemy, playing a dual role in the latter; Richard Kelly’s cult hit Donnie Darko; Antoine Fuqua’s Southpaw; Jean-Marc Vallee’s Demolition; Baltasar Kormákur’s Everest; Jim Sheridan’s Brothers; Duncan Jones’ Source Code; David Fincher’s Zodiac; Sam Mendes’ Jarhead; John Madden’s Proof; Miguel Arteta’s The Good Girl; Brad Silberling’s Moonlight Mile; Nicole Holofcener’s Lovely & Amazing; Joe Johnston’s October Sky; and Ed Zwick’s Love & Other Drugs, for which he received a Golden Globe Award nomination. In 2014, Mr. Gyllenhaal made his Broadway debut in Nick Payne’s Constellations and his musical theatre debut in the Encores! production of Little Shop of Horrors. The actor made his New York stage debut in 2012 starring in If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet, for the Roundabout Theatre Company, which earned him nominations from the Drama League and the Lucille Lortel Awards. The latter marked his first stage work since 2002, when he starred on London’s West End in Kenneth Lonergan’s revival ofThis is Our Youth, for which he won an Evening Standard Theater Award for Outstanding Newcomer. He recently formed Nine Stories, a production company acquiring and developing new material. The company is in development on a number of titles, including Denis Villeneuve’s The Son, which is based on Jo Nesbo’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name; a scripted limited series for A&E centered on cults throughout history; and the cartel drama The Man Who Made It Snow, to be directed by Antoine Fuqua. Additional projects in development include Theater of War, based on an episode of “This American Life,” which will be directed by Alex Timbers; and Ubisoft’s film adaptation of the Tom Clancy video game “The Division,” in which Mr. Gyllenhaal will also star. Through Nine Stories, he has produced Stronger, inspired by a true story and based on The New York Times bestseller of the same name. The movie, directed by David Gordon Green and to be released in 2017, is the deeply personal account of the heroic journey of Boston Marathon survivor Jeff Bauman (whom Mr. Gyllenhaal portrays). He currently stars in Focus Feature’s Nocturnal Animals.

In my opinion I didn't see a false note anywhere. I want to thank Jean-Marc Vallee our director. I want to thank Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner who I worked with daily. There are three things that I need each day. One, I need something to look up to, another to look forward to, and another is someone to chase. First off, I want to thank God because that's who I look up. He's graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or of any other hand. He's shown me that it's a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. To my family is to what I look forward to. To my father who I know is up there right now with a big pot of gumbo, he has a big lemon meringue pie over there. He's probably in his underwear and has a big can of Miller Lite and he's dancing right now. To you dad, you taught me how to be a man. To my mother who's here tonight, who taught me and my two older brothers -- demanded -- that we respect ourselves. And in turn we learned we were better able to learn how to respect others. Thank you for that mama. To my wife, Camilla, and my kids Levi, Vida and Mr Stone (Livingstone), the courage you give me every time I walk through the door is unparallelled. You are the four people in my life that I want to make the most proud of me. Thank you. And to my hero. That's who I chase. When I was 15 years old I had a very important person in my life come and ask me 'Who's your hero?' I said, 'I thought about it and it's me in ten years. So I turned 25 ten years later and that same person comes to me and goes, 'Are you a hero?' I said, 'Not even close!' She said why and I said, 'My hero is me at 35.' You see, every day, and every week, and every month, and every year of my life, my hero is always ten years away. I'm never going to be my hero. I'm not going to obtain that and that's fine with me because it keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing. So to any of us, whatever those things are and whatever it is we look up to, whatever it is we look forward to and whoever it is we're chasing, to that I say Amen. To that I say alright, alright, alright. And just keep living, huh? Thank you. Source: https://genius.com/Matthew-mcconaughey-bes...
