My guest this week is Drew Dudley (cool name, huh?).   Because he specializes in leadership topics, and I think he's really smart, I'm excited to share what he knows/what he's learned.   I believe we really can lead from any seat, as I learned from the illuminating Benjamin Zander years ago when I saw him speak at a  conference.  His presence was electric.  And it inspired me to read his books about possibilities, sparking a fire I've had kindling ever since.   Drew urges us to accept that anyone who acts engaging and is doing or demonstrating something, is indeed a leader. I completely agree!   No matter what your role or place in life, when you have a story, it's important to share your story. You simply never know who is in the audience. Right then, or later, people will often respond with, "I thought I was the only one". It's almost never true. And more importantly, the stories we're most embarrassed to share, are the ones we need to tell.   When we chatted about success and failure, and thinking that if we try something, or take a risk, we might not survive, Drew urges us to tell him or someone about a time you didn't survive.  Spoiler alert: you can't! You can't because you have survived. You're alive and that's proof that you can survive anything. So there's zero evidence that you won't survive. So stop being afraid of that, at least. As far as risks go, we can almost never be certain of something so instead, be decisive.   Get comfortable being uncertain.   Finally, from the hard won wisdom of Drew, momentum is more important than plans. Yes indeed. Most companies around the world exist with some form of hierarchy. Usually it is a vertical structure, with executive above management, which is in turn above the workforce. But there is another form, a “flat” hierarchy. Long promulgated by tech companies and start-ups in particular, flat or horizontally-structured companies operate on the principle of “Be your own boss.” Everyone chooses their agenda, their pace and in principle there is no boss to upbraid you if you make a mistake. So does it work? David Heinemeier Hansson is a founder and partner at the web services company Basecamp, a company with a “flat as possible” structure. He gives his thoughts on being the boss of people when they are their own boss. As you face challenge after challenge, each successive one does not seem so scary. [05:22] There is something powerful about the scars that you carry around because you can look at them and remind yourself you've beaten every challenge. [06:10] He managed to have this kind of exciting ride that brought him to a place where he could be happy with his life and career. [12:13] When you don't know what to do in a business situation, ask yourself: what would the other person want me to be during this situation? [17:38] Money is not an indication that you are doing things right. [18:34] If you make bad choices, do not panic. You have plenty of time to make a bunch of good ones. [27:20] Happiness is not possible without forgiveness. Most of your life, the number one thing you can do that will instantly make your life better is to forgive. [28:35] Leaders don't care about winning; they care about succeeding. The only way to succeed is to let go of the idea of winning, and not forgiving is always about winning. [32:30] Leadership comes from consistency above anything else. A lot of things we chase in goals are byproducts of our daily behaviors. [36:30] Compounding is the biggest and powerful force in the universe.   [49:56] Leadership removes fear to help people succeed and politics adds fear to win. Three key points Failure creates scars.
