There was a time in Ontario when the provincial government focused on the really big issues: clean air and water, inter-city rail service, provincial parks, good education policy, effective hospital care. Not anymore. Doug Ford's government is different. Exhibit A: deciding where the capital city can and cannot put bike lanes. What's going on here? Why is it starting to feel like Toronto vs. Ontario? Former Toronto mayor and longtime community activist John Sewell; Amanda Galbraith, Co-Founder & Partner of the Oyster Group; and Laura Stone from the Globe and Mail join Steve Paikin to discuss. Craig and Lee discuss La Maison Simons' ambitious expansion into Toronto, focusing on the retailer's move into spaces vacated by Nordstrom at CF Toronto Eaton Centre and the Yorkdale Shopping Centre. With a $75 million investment, Simons plans to open two new stores which could become the top-sellers in the chain. The expansion reflects Simons' strategy to grow its footprint and cater to the city's demand for diverse retail options. At CF Toronto Eaton Centre, Simons will occupy approximately 110,000 square feet over three floors, featuring a main floor presence and a new hallway connecting the north and south ends of the mall. This corridor, a first in the mall's history, will improve pedestrian access and enhance the shopping experience. In addition to Simons, a Nike flagship store and Eataly will also take up space in the former Nordstrom location, further enriching the mall's retail offerings. Yorkdale Shopping Centre will see Simons take over the first two levels of the former Nordstrom space, catering to the young, fashion-forward shoppers frequenting the mall. The new stores will include luxury designer departments and Simons' popular private label merchandise, aiming to significantly boost the retailer's sales. With these expansions, Simons continues its coast-to-coast growth, solidifying its position as a key player in the Canadian retail landscape. Craig finally speculates that Simons will open in the former Nordstrom building in downtown Vancouver, in a similar fashion to what was announced for CF Toronto Eaton Centre. Former Toronto mayor Mel Lastman died on Saturday at the age of 88. Lastman made his fortune as a businessman before becoming mayor of North York for 25 years; after that, he was elected the first mayor of the amalgamated City of Toronto. And while the colourful politician made headlines for some politically incorrect remarks while in office—and may have fathered two sons out of wedlock—Lastman's biggest legacy includes his staunch promotion of the city and his dedication to building up the suburban parts of the city. Three colleagues and friends join to remember the former mayor. Journalist Sue-Ann Levy covered City Hall during Lastman's tenure; now-retired city councillor Norman Gardner was a close ally through their careers; and Rabbi Shmuel Spero is the rabbi at the Anshei Minsk synagogue in Kensington Market, where Lastman had his bar mitzvah. Canadian born, Geoff Baker has covered some big news stories, many of which have turned into controversy in which all of them the veracity of his stories was proved. You may recall Tim Johnson managed the Toronto Blue Jays, only to be fired for lying to the players about a Vietnam career that didn't exist. Carlos Delgado, Baker reported was no longer standing for God Bless America during games in Puerto Rico. The story was picked up by major USA new outlets forcing Delgado to have to address the issue with the MLB media. The same type of attention to detail accompanied Baker when he arrived in Seattle covering the Seattle Mariners. Baker broke the story on dysfunction with the Mariners management team as part of a story involving Eric Wedge and Howard Lincoln. Most recently Geoff was on point again as the location for a proposed NBA team was front page news in Seattle only to get unravelled as Key Arena carried the day for an NHL areana. In this episode Baker talks with Jonah Sigel about the Toronto Sports Media scene, difference between coverage there and other markets like Philadelphia and what it is going to be like trying to get Seattle ready for NHL hockey and the Seattle Kraken. As we sit on November 22nd, there is ONE media member in Seattle who has ever worked full time covering an NHL team. ONE. Baker isn't it by the way. Ryan Clark of The Athletic is, having covered the Avalanche for the most recent two years.
