Send us a textEver felt stuck in an emotional winter where nothing grows and everything feels cold and isolated? Or perhaps you're in a blazing summer of life where challenges burn hot and relief seems nowhere in sight. This powerful episode explores life's inevitable seasons and offers profound hope for anyone struggling through difficult times.Robin takes us on a journey through the emotional seasons we all experience. When we're in winter—those periods of isolation, withdrawal, and emotional drought—we often forget that spring must follow. Those dark days when nothing blooms in our relationships, careers, or spiritual lives aren't permanent stops, but temporary stations on a continuing journey. The episode beautifully illustrates how spring's renewal brings fresh opportunities, new relationships, and the return of joy we might have thought was gone forever. The wisdom doesn't stop with winter and spring. We explore summer seasons—those overwhelming periods when everything feels unbearably intense—and the promise that fall's cooling relief will eventually come. Through it all runs a powerful thread of hope: no matter how severe your current hardship, the next season is already on the horizon. Storms, hurricanes, and tornadoes in our lives never stay permanently.Ready to shift your perspective on your current struggles? This episode offers both comfort for your present pain and hopeful anticipation for what's coming next. Remember: "Whatever season you're in in your life, know that it's not going to stay in that season." Your spring is coming. Lucia Pietroiusti is the Head of Ecologies at the Serpentine in London and the first guest of Season Two of the Ecosystem Member podcast. If you aren't familiar with the Serpentine, it is a contemporary art gallery in Kensington Gardens. And better yet, admission to the galleries is free for all visitors making it incredibly accessible. Lucia is one of the driving forces behind the Serpentine's work as a curator, programmer and organizational strategist. As the Head of Ecologies, she works at the intersection of art, ecology and systems. Her role is to embed environmental responsibility throughout the Serpentine's infrastructure, operations, networks and programming. She also happened to create this role out of the General Ecology project we discuss in the episode that she started in 2018. However, her influence stretches beyond the bounds of Kensington Gardens. She was the curator for the Golden Lion-winning opera performance ‘Sun & Sea' at the Lithuanian Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale and the ‘Songs for the Changing Seasons' exhibition at Vienna's first Climate Biennale earlier this year. After you listen to the episode, make sure to check out her website that is linked in the show notes because this is just the tip of the iceberg of her work. If you aren't subscribed to our Substack, you can also visit ecosystemmember.com to check out a post with photos and videos of many of the projects we talk about in the episode. We're going to try to do a bit more with the Substack this Season to help you learn more about our guests and amazing art around the world, so make sure to subscribe. **This episode was recorded prior to some of the other episodes of Season 3. Shownotes When our loved ones pass away, there can often feel a sense of regret or bargaining. “If I only did this, if I had finished that, they never got to…” these are common feelings when a person passes away, questioning if their time was spent well, or if it was complete. And sometimes we want to preserve their memory by continuing a tradition or legacy to honor them. So the question remains, should we carry out our loved ones' requests? Should we spend time continuing to honor them, and should or when we move on with our lives? Guest Bio Sue A. Fairchild started out as a devout writer, but now also claims the titles of writer, editor, writing coach, and speaker. She has written and self-published three books and her latest novel, Changing Tides, a story about grief and the power of community and God's love, was released in March 2024 from Elk Lake Publishing Inc. Changing Tides is a finalist for the AWSA Golden Scrolls awards. She is working on her follow-up book Changing Seasons which is set to release later in 2024. When Sue isn't writing her own stories, she loves working with other Christian authors in their writing journey who have the common goal of sharing God's message. Sue and her husband live in north central PA with their four-legged furbaby Daisy. Scripture -Psalm 146:4 “When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish.” -Ecclesiastes 9:5b “For the living know that they are to die, but the dead no longer know anything. There is no further recompense for them, because all memory of them is lost.” -Psalm 147:3 “[He heals] the brokenhearted and [binds] up their wounds.” -Revelation 21:4 “He will wipe [away] every tear and there … shall be no mourning for the old order has passed away.” Links -Sue's Book: Changing Tides -Sue's Instagram Handle: @suefairchildedits -Sue's email: sueafairchild74@gmail.com Prayer for: Sue's friend Jill who is grieving the loss of her mother and ongoing health issues. Journaling Questions 1. What are some ways you have chosen to honor your loved one? 2. Are there any wishes your loved one requested that you have found difficult to actually fulfill? Take some time to reflect on why it may be difficult. 3. Which scripture discussed in the episode resonated with you? Try to spend some time with it, perhaps using Lectio Divina. 4. What is your mourning glory? Contact Us! If you're just joining us and new to the podcast we'd love to invite you to go back and look at some of our previous episodes. Adapting Writing Practices to the Changing Seasons of Life, a conversation with your podcast hosts, Stephanie Oswald, Ph.D. and Elizabeth WilsonAs a writer, you often find yourself navigating the ebbs and flows of life alongside your creative pursuits. This delicate balance becomes even more apparent during the summer months, as you may be faced with a disrupted schedule and demands for your time that are different from other times of the year. In this week's podcast, we share insights about how it's possible to adjust writing routines amidst the joys and demands of life and we offer you some points of reflection on the adaptability required in any writer's journey.Seasonal Shifts in WritingThe shifting seasons are often accompanied by changes in routine. This is not just true for our writing, but for many aspects of life. When summer arrives, we are met with the promise of freedom and adventure, but it also brings a distinct shift in routines for many families, which can be an added challenge as a creative with school-aged children. There can be a significant increase in caregiving responsibilities, adding to the complexity of your daily schedule, or you find yourself immersed in managing various commitments beyond your writing. It's okay if you're facing challenges when it comes to maintaining a consistent writing practice. You might need to try different strategies to see what works. In the podcast, we share how we attempted early morning and afternoon writing sessions only to find ourselves encountering interruptions and a lack of creative flow. Despite setbacks you might face, when you take time to acknowledge the challenges and give yourself grace in the process, you'll be able to prevent creative blocks and get back to your writing. Renewed Focus and CommunityThere's a cyclical nature to creative productivity. With the shifting schedules of summer, you might need more periods of rest and this doesn't equate to failure as a writer, but are essential phases of renewal for your creative pursuits. When you shift your perspective from self-criticism to self-care, you'll find yourself able to nurture yourself as a writer and sustain a long-term creative life.As summer is beginning to come to a close, at least where we are located, and the new school year is set to start, we know there will be more changes to your writing schedules. New challenges will arise, but taking this time in the summer to reflect will only help strengthen your writing. We also encourage you to find a community of writers, even if it's a small group of 2 or 3 or you, to connect with and provide each other with accountability, support, and guidance. Celebrating YourselfYou are resilient amidst the ups and downs of life. When you embrace your adaptability, honor your intuitive rhythms, and seek inspiration from diverse sources, you can thrive in any season. It's important to celebrate each “win” along the way no matter how big or small. Dawn Barton—speaker and author of Midlife Battle Cry—felt invisible and forgotten when she faced the unseen challenges of midlife. After a journey of rediscovering who she was and the potential God gave her and taking a leap of faith, Dawn found a new love for herself and discovered there is goodness in every season of life. Quotes “I'm so glad I took that initial leap of faith. A leap of faith is not without fear sometimes.” - Dawn Barton “I just kept hearing Him say, ‘Be still, be still and rest in me.' And I finally figured out He was calling me to be still, to reevaluate and redefine, and to look at who I was as a woman in this season, in my life, and in being still, to draw closer to Him.” - Dawn Barton “I think we sometimes look at life and we believe that all the great things, all the great miracles from God, were on one side of it. Our babies, our careers, all the big things that we did, all the great miracles, have already happened. But the reality is it doesn't work that way. There's no midlife to God, and if we live life fully and boldly, there's just as many sweet, beautiful, miraculous blessings still to come.” - Dawn Barton “Just when we think we're in a hard season, a down season—He's just an Ephesians 3:20 God. He's just immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine. And that's what I think of, who could ever imagine those kinds of miracles? But that is God, right? And it's just that reminder of just how human we are, just how big He is.” - Dawn Barton Guest's Links Dawn Barton's Website Dawn Barton's Instagram Dawn Barton's Facebook Dawn Barton's Books Resources Mentioned in This Episode Mary Kay Cosmetics Connect with Sally Lloyd-Jones Jesus Storybook Bible Facebook Jesus Storybook Bible Instagram Sally's website Sally's Facebook Sally's Instagram *Episode produced by Four Eyes Media*
Organic Farmer and herbalist Jane Hawley Stevens discovered the magic of natural remedies in her personal life before establishing Four Elements Organic Herbals and developing a complete herbal wellness line. Jane and her husband have a 130 acre farm where they have been certified organic since 1990, and take great care to cultivate their plants sustainably. In her new book “The Celestial Garden” Jane shares the wisdom of planting by the moon and by the zodiac, relying on the earth's natural rhythms for guidance not only in the garden but in so many aspects of life. She explains how the movement of the moon through the constellations of the zodiac provides a detailed calendar of optimal times for planting seeds, roots, and transplants, as well as for pruning, weeding, propagation, harvesting, and even starting new projects or taking a rest. In this conversation, we talk about the different methods and traditions of astrological gardening, the importance of listening to your inner guidance, grounding ourselves in the wisdom of elders and living in harmony with the moon and the Earth.
