S.7 Ep.6: The Fire Forest: Restoring the Long-leaf Pine

SilviCast

What tree begins life looking more like a tuft of grass, survives repeated fires for years on the forest floor, and then suddenly bolts toward the canopy in a remarkable growth spurt? The longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) is one of the most unique and ecologically important tree species in North America. Once dominating the coastal plains of the southeastern United States, longleaf pine forests have been reduced to less than 5% of their historic range. Yet these forests remain among the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the continent. In this episode of SilviCast, we explore the fascinating life history of longleaf pine and the silvicultural practices being used to restore these iconic forests. Join us for a conversation with Steve Jack, Executive Director of Boggy Slough Conservation Area, who shares insights from decades of longleaf pine restoration work across the southern United States. Guest on the Episode:Steve Jack, Ph.D.Director of the Boggy Slough Conservation AreaDr. Steve Jack is the founding executive director of the Boggy Slough Conservation Area (BSCA), a 19,000-acre property near Lufkin, Texas owned by the T.L.L. Temple Foundation. In that role Steve leads the foundation's vision for BSCA “to serve as a model of excellence for East Texas through ecological research and outreach to promote conservation, management, and stewardship of natural resources.” Prior to BSCA, Steve spent over two decades at the Jones Center at Ichauway in southwest Georgia, focused on the management and restoration of longleaf pine. Hurricanes are often seen as purely destructive, but new research reveals their vital role in shaping longleaf pine ecosystems. Dr. Jeffrey Cannon from the Jones Center at Ichauway joins the Timber University podcast to discuss how his research explores how these storms influence forest structure, stimulate reproduction, and act as natural restorers. Discover how hurricanes increase biodiversity, create complex forest structures, and reinforce fire regimes, offering ecological benefits often overlooked.  We also discuss how remote sensing tools like LiDAR are transforming our understanding of storm impacts, from tree architecture adaptations to fuel patterns affecting fire behavior. Dr. Cannon provides practical advice on managing forest diversity to bolster resilience against future hurricanes, crucial for landowners and restoration practitioners. This episode is perfect for land managers, conservationists, and anyone interested in the nuanced role of disturbances. It challenges conventional views and sparks innovative thinking about storm ecology and forest resilience. What draws a researcher to the murky, hidden world of amphibians? In this episode of the Snake Talk Podcast, Dr. Chris Jenkins sits down with Maddie Zickgraf, a Master's student at the University of Alabama and The Jones Center at Ichauway, to explore the winding path that led her into the world of amphibian ecology and the strange, secretive species that now define her work. Maddie's passion for herps was sparked by childhood days exploring creeks in Pennsylvania. That curiosity grew into a focused academic pursuit, taking her across the country and into a range of field experiences from studying Pacific Giant Salamanders to Chiricahua Leopard Frogs. These experiences ultimately led her to a technician position at the Herpetology Lab at The Jones Center at Ichauway, where she worked with Gopher Tortoises and deepened her connection to southeastern ecosystems. It was during her time at Ichauway that Maddie became fascinated by the movement ecology of sirens and amphiumas, two large, cryptic amphibians that often coexist in ephemeral wetlands. While researching and trapping these elusive species, she began asking new questions about how they move through and persist in these dynamic environments, a curiosity that now shapes her Master's research.  Connect with Maddie at The Jones Center at Ichauway. . About the Show:"It's not a lack of food problem. You know, our country has an abundance of food. It's getting that food to the people that need it." – Chef Sam WalkerHunger doesn't take a day off.For millions of children across the United States—and right here in Arkansas—food insecurity is a daily reality that shapes everything from how well a child sleeps to how clearly they think in school to how much hope they carry into their future. On this episode of I Am Northwest Arkansas®, host Randy Wilburn sits down with Chef Sam Walker, the chef and owner of Gaskins on Emma in downtown Springdale, to talk about one of the most urgent and quietly persistent challenges facing our communities: making sure every child has enough to eat.Sam's journey from growing up in Little Rock to building a restaurant rooted in hospitality and belonging has given him a front-row seat to both the power of food and the pain of its absence—and he's decided to do something about it.Chef Sam Walker is the kind of cook who understands that food is never just food.It is connection, dignity, memory, and care—all served on a single plate. In this conversation, Sam opens up about how his love for the culinary craft has always been inseparable from his love for people and why that philosophy has drawn him into the fight against childhood hunger in a deep and personal way. From the growing culinary renaissance reshaping Springdale and Northwest Arkansas into a legitimate food destination to the national movement rallying chefs, communities, and everyday people around the No Kid Hungry campaign, this episode is a reminder that the most powerful thing a community can do is feed its children—and that the people leading that charge are often the ones standing behind the stove.Key Takeaways:Community Through Food: Bringing people together around the table builds lasting connections and support for those in need.Tackling Food Insecurity: Northwest Arkansas faces real challenges, but people in the region are stepping up to help.Chef's Night for No Kid Hungry: The event features 20 chefs, aiming to raise $50,000 to ensure kids don't go hungry.Springdale's Culinary Boom: Springdale is now recognized as a hub for outstanding food, thanks to chefs and entrepreneurs committed to growth.Multiple Ways to Help: Whether you buy a ticket, sponsor, or donate, you can be a part of this movement to end child hunger. All this and more on this episode of the I Am Northwest Arkansas® podcast.Important Links and Mentions on the Show*Chef's Night for No Kid Hungry – April 26 at the Jones Center, SpringdaleChef Cycle No Kid Hungry: Learn more, donate, or sponsor rides and events Chef Cycle 2026Chef Sam Walker on InstagramChef Sam Walker on LinkedInGaskins on Emma (Springdale's food corridor anchor)Hive at Bentonville – Raised $80,000+ for No Kid HungryMentioned chefs from out of town: Ted Cizma (California), Vinnie Cimino (Ohio), Joe Flamm (Chicago), Rebecca Masson (Texas), Lambert Givens (Boston)Sponsor, donate, or attend via links in the show notes or by emailing hello@iamnorthwestarkansas.com for direct info and connectionsThis episode is sponsored by*FindItNWA.com Try ONBoardNWA.com Today!*Note: some of the resources mentioned may be affiliate links. Their focus is personal and community banking. When you bank with a community bank, you're investing in local businesses, local entrepreneurs, local charities, and the causes close to home. Signature Bank has worked hard to earn its tagline, "Community Banking at its Best." You may ask why bank at Signature?  Because they focus on the customer instead of having a branch on every corner, this means you can have your questions answered by a real person, whether you're reaching out to the call center or your banker's cell phone. You can access any ATM in the country without fear of a fee.  They will refund all of those fees at the end of every month. Finally, they are constantly improving their digital offerings to ensure you can access the best financial tools from your laptop, phone, or tablet 24 hours a day. Signature Bank of Arkansas is a full-service bank offering traditional checking and savings accounts, investment accounts, business and personal loans, and mortgages. COVID new hospitalization rate drops below 60 - we're (hopefully) on our way back to Stage 4, at 50 - while two reported deaths on Tuesday keep that daily average steady and high at 7. The fall run of the Pecan Street Festival has been denied its special events permit by the City. Lago Vista High School goes to remote learning for three days, starting today. Governor Greg Abbott signs into law the contentious SB1, the voting restriction bill that prompted the six-week walkout of Democratic House members - that walkout ultimately failed to stop the law, but did influence some concession - while President Joe Biden weighs in. The Texas NAACP has sued over SB1, and is also party in a lawsuit against the University of Texas regarding "The Eyes Of Texas". Governor Abbott has also called a third special session of the Texas Legislature, the main event: redistricting. Goals set for a large increase in affordable housing in Austin, almost halfway thru the set decade, are falling severely short. City health officials and the CDC remind us: it's time for flu shots. A 400-foot apartment building is set to go up near the Capitol. Tonight's Sound and Cinema event at the Long Center features a screening of Dazed And Confused and music from The Texas Gentlemen. An exhibit on Daniel Johnston at the Jones Center downtown opens Saturday. Salt-N-Pepa will play Longhorn City Limits prior to the Rice game. And a hot week remains, with a potential temperature drop coming early next week.
