Book interview with Karen González – “Beyond Welcome: Centering Immigrants in Our Christian Response to Immigration”
In today's episode Heather shares part three of our “Who Is My Neighbor?” pod-class series. She is joined by QuaWanna Bannarbie and Bethany Rivera Molinar, two of the gifted contributors to Voices of Lament: Reflections on Brokenness and Hope in a World Longing for Justice, a new book inspired by Psalm 37. In their candid conversation with Heather, QuaWanna and Bethany invite us to lean into the spiritual practice of lament and reflect on its power for both personal and social transformation. If you missed it, please go back and listen to last week's episode with author Karen González on “Seeing Our Immigrant Neighbor.” This week Heather also chats with our favorite social media expert, Brady Shearer, as he shares his thoughts on how to use good storytelling to stop the scroll. Guest Bios QuaWanna Bannarbie and Bethany Rivera Molinar are two of 29 Christian women of color whose writing forms Voices of Lament: Reflections on Brokenness and Hope in a World Longing for Justice. Edited by Natasha Sistrunk Robinson and inspired by Psalm 37, with its outpouring of emotion about the human experience as an inspired starting place, these 29 women, representing an inclusive, intergenerational sisterhood of clergy, poets, entrepreneurs, creatives and more, make public their private stories. In so doing, they both model and offer a way to hold the tension of injustice and heartache with hope and love. In this episode, we welcome back speaker, writer, public theologian, and immigrant advocate, Karen González.Karen immigrated to the US from Guatemala as a child. She knows all too well what newcomers to a country face. When she was last with us we talked about her book -The God Who Sees -which chronicled her experience as an immigrant. Karen's second book which was recently released is titled - Beyond Welcome: Centering Immigrants in Our Christian Response to Immigration. This book seeks to elevate the discourse in the church beyond hospitality to immigrants. Many Christians have good intentions, working hard to welcome immigrants with hospitality and solidarity. But how can that be done in a way that empowers our immigrant neighbours rather than pushing them to the fringes of white-dominant culture and keeping them as outsiders? That's exactly the question Karen González explores in ‘Beyond Welcome' and the question we'll explore in this episode of The Vicars' Crossing. This podcast was recorded on March 16th, 2023.
In this episode, Kelly interviews author, speaker, and immigrant advocate, Karen González, about what it looks like to, and ways we can, center immigrants in the Christian response to immigration. They discuss:the importance of language and the words we choose to use (or choose to unlearn) when talking about immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, as well as the real consequences of that language in their livesethics para joder, where citizens and immigrants partner together to "screw with the system" and defy unjust laws for the protection and flourishing of allpractical, actionable ways we can move the needle toward justice and equity and flourishing for immigrants on both small and large scales, locally and nationally...and the political landscape of recent history and where things stand currently, and what that means for how we vote and what we do in the meantime.THE CONGRESSIONAL SWITCHBOARD PHONE NUMBER TO CALL TO BE CONNECTED TO YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVE & SENATORS IS (202) 224-3121.GUEST BIO: Karen González is a writer, speaker, and immigrant advocate who emigrated from Guatemala as a child. “The reason why I had been able to be so successful in white culture is because I had assimilated so much and that was tremendously costly to me. People always talk about the cost of not assimilating but they never discuss the cost of assimilating.”This week on Disruptive Peacemakers we talk with Karen González, a speaker, writer, and immigrant advocate who works as Director of Human Resources for World Relief. An immigrant from Guatemala, González studied at Fuller Theological Seminary. During the conversation she unpacks this amazing quote from her book: “I am a Christian, but I have not ceased to be Latina, Guatemalan, an immigrant, and a woman.” Our conversation with Karen was incredibly deep, personal and informative. She challenges us to re-think how we view immigration and theology.

Rev. Jim Wallis talks with theologian and immigrant advocate Karen González about the lessons of immigration in the Bible. The metrics of the COVID-19 pandemic show how disproportionately affected our immigrant and refugee neighbors have been. González says, "The story of the Bible isn't just a story of moving from being lost to being saved, but it's one of being a foreigner and moving toward being part of the family of God to belonging. And that's a trajectory we can see throughout the scriptures from the very beginning when we meet Abraham — God is asking him to migrate, and we see he and Sarah's vulnerability in Egypt. Over and over again the scripture restates some 83 times ... that we're to treat the immigrant as ourselves, we're to love the immigrant as ourselves, we're to do justice for the immigrant. And there's judgment. There's a whole book of the Bible, Obadiah. And it's judgment for those who did not treat the refugee and immigrant well, for those who did not do justice for the immigrant."

What you don't know about refugees
Many American Christians have good intentions, working hard to welcome immigrants with hospitality and solidarity. But how can we do that in a way that empowers our immigrant neighbors rather than pushing them to the fringes of white-dominant culture and keeping them as outsiders? We talk with Karen González about these questions, which are the themes of her new book Beyond Welcome: Centering Immigrants in Our Christian Response to Immigration.A Guatemalan immigrant, González draws from the Bible and her own experiences to examine why the traditional approach to immigration ministries and activism is at best incomplete and at worst harmful. By advocating for putting immigrants in the center of the conversation, González helps readers grow in discipleship and recognize themselves in their immigrant neighbors. Accessible to any Christian who is called to serve immigrants, this book equips readers to take action to dismantle white supremacy and xenophobia in the church. They will emerge with new insight into our shared humanity and need for belonging and liberation.Karen González is a speaker, writer, storyteller, and immigrant advocate, who herself immigrated from Guatemala as a child. Karen is a former public school teacher and attended Fuller Theological Seminary, where she studied theology and missiology. For the last 13 years, she has been a non-profit professional, working for organizations that serve refugees and other immigrants. She wrote a book about her own immigration story and some of the immigrants found in the Bible: The God Who Sees: Immigrants:The Bible, and the Journey to Belong. Her second book is Beyond Welcome: Centering Immigrants in our Christian Response to Immigration. She also has bylines in Sojourners, Christianity Today, The Christian Century, and others. She is also the co-host of the Latina-focused podcast Cafe with Comadres.
