The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Leah Dawson grew up in Florida, and moved to Oahu to attend University of Hawaii, where she earned a BA in Creative Media in 2008. Soon after, she started work as a production assistant for the Vans Triple Crown, launching her into a career behind the camera. As a surfer, Dawson's approach is grounded in freedom of expression and dance, on all manner of crafts, with nods to the surfers who have informed her wave-riding odyssey—Rell Sunn, Margo Oberg, Jericho Poppler, and Lynne Boyer, to name but a few. She is the cofounder of Salty Sensations, in which she and her partners, Kassia Meador and Makala Smith, host surf retreats at select spots worldwide. She's also a co-founder of Changing Tides Foundation, a women-led organization that celebrates diversity and inclusivity. In this episode of Soundings, Dawson talks with Jamie Brisick about the importance of believing in something, attaining longevity as a surfer, the Blue Crush generation, the freedom of the glide, lineup dynamics, the power of uplifting others, and the most memorable moments she's captured through the viewfinder.

This week we sit in a hot tub for the first time with musical composer and artist, Aska Matsumiya. Aska is at the end of her third trimester of pregnancy as we bathe. Her belly is full and ripe, and the baby is ready to come out any day. Aska shares her experience on approaching early motherhood for a second time, 20 years after the birth of her first and only daughter, Bebel. Immigrating from Japan to California with her family as a young lady, Aska remembers her experience of cultural and linguistic differences between the two nations from childhood through today. Since she was three, Aska's relationship with composition and piano grew as her own language, an alternative method of expression when words and socializing did not come naturally.Aska explains how her relationship with piano continued to blossom and guided her towards her dream of going to Julliard, landing her at American art schools in her early childhood education. However, when Aska was 15, she found authentic friendship in school with kids who were alternative, artistic, and exposed her to a foreign genre of music: Punk. Aska experienced her first punk concert that would bring her to drop out of high school, drop her dream of being a concert pianist, and join her own punk band with whom she would begin touring in a van. Yet, life quickly had a different plan: at 19, Aska was pregnant, inciting her to quit the band and embark on her next journey in life: motherhood. As a young mother, Aska describes how she dove into the musical culture of Seattle, playing in indie bands in the Sub Pop era. Her love of variant genres of music and doing odd jobs like working for fashion magazines, consulting for brands, or even playing piano for ballet classes helped to develop the skills, and give her experiences that would weave together to make her better at scoring films now. People come to her because she knows the patterns of classical music and simultaneously knows how to break all of the rules. People come to her to score films when they want something different. At 25 years old, Aska began her scoring journey through working with director Crystal Moselle, composing pieces for various fashion clips and then, her breakout film: The Wolfpack. ‘There Are Many Of Us' was Aska's first original song featured as the central theme song of Spike Jonze's film, ‘I'm Here'. Spike told her she could make things and that could be her work. This nugget was mind blowing, and helped Aska to transition from taking on all of the odd jobs she was piecing together, to focusing in on composing scores full time. Aska now incorporates her cultural identity with her Japan-based music production company: Black Cat White Cat Music, which she created with her brother. They curate musical artists from around the world to create original soundscapes and songs for Japanese commercials and productions. Aska explains cultural differences she has encountered in the Japanese business space. She explains that in Japan, trust comes from words. Whereas in America, everything is contracted. She describes how growing up in America has helped her and her brother create a bridge between Japanese culture and the world outside. Aska sees that the way people listen to music in Japan or Germany, resonates with the way that she likes to create music. She observes that Japanese culture is more comfortable with silence and space. She describes a Japanese word that doesn't translate to English conceptually or lexically: “Kue-issho.” She couldn't think of the word exactly in the bath, but later said that it is a Buddhist thought that means “you will eventually find yourself meeting up again with the one you wished for, in one place, and to keep that strength to seek the hope in destiny.”Aska and I first met through our mutual close friend Desiree, who passed away in a tragic and shocking surfing accident in 2015. Our individual friendship began through our shared mourning and loss of someone we loved. Aska shares how she composed an album as an expression of her grief for Desiree, but she never released it. Simply the act of creating it was cathartic. Surfing had been a passion that Desiree and Aska enjoyed together. Aska learned to surf from our collaborator and Tub Talks guest, Kassia Meador. Aska was scoring a surf film for Kassia, and it was in the experience of paying attentions to the details, the micromovements and how to play sound to the movement, that she became interested in experiencing it herself. When she asked Kassia about it, Kassia put all the necessary materials into her hands and took Aska into the water. Aska describes surfing as feeling like a child on a playground because it's playful. She understands how fundamentally important it is to feel joy so simply. Adults can forget how to have fun. Surfing elicits that joy in Aska's life. And this conversation inspires us to find these joys, and our passions, in ourselves. I hope you enjoy this deep soak with my friend in bloom, Aska Matsumiya! To join Secular Sabbath membership, you can find us at secular-sabbath.com/membership. This week on the Tub Talks podcast, I steep in the bath with Kassia Meador: professional surfer, sound healer, wisdom-seeker, and one of our very first ambient collaborators at Secular Sabbath. We learn about surfing and the cultures around it, riding waves: musically and in the ocean, and healing modalities like polarity therapy. This introspective conversation with Kassia takes us through many levels of education and learning: both inside and out. From her early years of growing up in Southern California, Kassia always had a passion for the waves. A pioneer in her industry, she always took an unconventional approach to her career. Her passion for feeling the flow on a surfboard blossomed into a deeper passion for creating moments of feeling good for others, from her early days experimenting with UFO to modern-day experiences at her own guided retreats or Secular Sabbath soundscapes. Not only is she one of the key figures who shaped the world of surfing for women through the 90s-00s, but she is also one of the early experimenters with sound bowls. Her art took shape as she realized its vibrational energy is a form of healing, a way to immerse in the vibration, hence the term: soundbath. So get ready to soak in with one of our closest friends and frequent collaborators as she shares her sage knowledge and lessons of trial and error with you for this unique soak in the tub.To join Secular Sabbath membership, you can find us at secular-sabbath.com/membership. As a young man in my early 20's in Puerto Rico (1990's), before the advent of social media and the internet, I was a passionate and fever-laden  longboarder. My only access to longboarding content were VHS videos at my local surf shop and the arrival of Longboard Magazine every three months. That magazine was a bible to me.My excitement in setting up and conducting an interview with the man that had such strong involvement with the mag that influenced the course  of my life was...... indescribable. I am confident to say that many of you, especially of my generation and older individuals of our community, were fans of LM.Jim Russi was born and raised in Southern California. He learned to surf at a young age (1960's) in the Manhattan Beach area of Los Angeles County. He became interested in photography in middle school and that interest became a passion/profession  that took him around the world. He graduated from The Brooks Institute of Photography. In 1978 he took a one week vacation, post graduation, to Oahu, Hawaii. He arrived from that vacation forty years later. A proud resident of Hawaii for forty years, his contributions to surfing photography and his local surf community have brought him countless blessings and strong friendships in the surf world. His surf photography has been published in most if not all of the top surfing magazines in the world. Cover shots, two page spreads, single full page, you name it! His work has been printed and seen!In the early 90's he was approached by Longboard Magazine founder Guy Motil and was offered the job of Senior Photographer. He was instrumental in that capacity and contributed to the growth and fan base of the magazine. He traveled around the world with some of the top longboarding talents of the time, bringing to the longboard community the photos and stories of those adventures. In the late 90's Jim teamed up with Roxy and created a series of highly successful advertising campaigns that may have impacted the popularity of women's surfing especially with longboarding. Some of those ads included the surfing talents of Kassia Meador, Daize Shayne, Kelia Moniz and many others.Jim is a family man, that now lives in Ventura, CA. Belinda Baggs- Aussie Queen Of Traditional Longboarding. Ep. 10

Belinda Baggs is, in my mind, one of the first female longboard traditional stylists that I have memory of. That does not mean that she was one of the first women traditionalists in the world. Southern California had a few young ladies that had taken that route of longboard surfing before Belinda. Lady loggers like Carla Rowland (now Zamora) and Kassia Meador to name just a few. However, I am pretty confident in saying that Belinda is one of the first Aussies, male or female, to adopt traditional longboarding style and become an ambassador of it in Australia. On this episode we will learn about her first encounter with traditional longboard surfing at Surfrider Beach, Malibu. This was in the summer of 2000. She was a young lady discovering the dynamics and the culture of Californian surfing. A summer that had a profound impact in her life then and it still dictates her present.Belinda is a dedicated mother, surfer, environmentalist activist, Patagonia ambassador and still one of the finest longboard stylists in the world. Though competition is not her thing, she's won Australian Championships in longboarding and placed third in the 2000 Women's World Longboard Competition. She was the first woman to ever appear on the cover of The Surfers Journal. She's been featured in multiple surf flicks including one of my favorites Sprout. She is an important character of our longboard community and its history.Enjoy!Topics:Her Introduction To Traditional Longboarding.California Longboard Culture.Australian Longboard Culture.Australian Influences .Women Surfing.Surf Films.Listeners Questions.Environmental Activism.Surfboard Design. The Ten- Rapid Fire Segment.Shoutouts.The Longboardarian Podcast is listener supported via www.ko-fi.com/longboardarian Visit us on our website www.longboardarian.com or on our Instagram and YouTube Channel.Episode Sponsor:Matt Kolo Photography Visit him on www.mattkolo.com and/or his Instagram @mattkolo.Episode Offer!1 and a half hours of water photography for you and two others, 10 images edited for maximum sharpness and beauty.
