His leadership has helped Conception Nurseries achieve significant milestones, including raising over $25M since its inception in 2019. Conception Nurseries is a California and Oregon-based company that aims to eliminate the problems that cultivators face with traditional cloning and mother rooms by bringing tissue culture technology to the cannabis industry. Kevin Brooks has been the only head coach for the DII powerhouse Angelo State Rams since the program's resurrection in 2005. Under his guidance not once in their history have they finished below .500 as they have solidly churned out Lone Star Conference title after title after title. Their success has not been limited to conference championships either. Oh heck no, not by a long shot. Over two dozen Ram players have earned All-American accolades and they've reached the national finals five times including each of the past two years. Despite all the school's tremendous success, one accomplishment has so far eluded Brooks and San Angelo State – a national title. Could this finally be the Rams year? I don't know, maybe. They're pretty gosh darn good. One thing that I do know is Coach Brooks not only has a knack for coaching, but chatting has well and he makes for a great listen.

Time. It makes fools of us all. When listening back to this episode I couldn't decide whether to publish or not, as so much has changed over the last 12 months. However, I feel this episode is still relevant and worthwhile. Perhaps serving as a marker of how we felt about independence in beer in 2019, feelings that have likely intensified significantly over the past few months. Independence is hugely important to me, but getting to the bottom of why it's so important is challenging. On this panel I'm joined by Eddie Lofthouse, founder of Harbour Brewing in Cornwall, Matt Clarke, who at the time of this recording was the head brewer at Hawkshead Brewery in Cumbria, and Kevin Brooks, who at the time was working for US importer Shelton Brothers, but has recently left to set up his own company, Oasthouse Creative.  The reason I was so reticent about publishing isn't just because during this panel I don't really manage to gather enough evidence to make a case for independence. But since then, Matt Clarke has been made redundant, along with 14 other staff at Hawkshead, as its owner Halewood Wines and Spirits—who acquired the brewery in March 2017—covered its losses during the financial difficulties created by the pandemic. For me, this signified how important independence is, and what it means: control, or the lack of. In making those redundancies I feel the heart and soul—its people—has been torn out of Hawkshead Brewery. This episode is also evidence of how fast the beer industry moves. To my panelists, if you're listening, thank you for being on this episode. And, if your opinions have changed since its recording, please drop me a line, as I'd love to get you back on the show to talk about it. I hope you enjoy this one folks — and just a reminder that this was recorded at a festival, so there's a little background noise, but hopefully it's not too intrusive.  Host: Matthew Curtis Guests: Matt Clarke — Hawkshead, Eddie Lofthouse — Harbour, Kevin Brooks — Shelton Bros. Read more at www.pelliclemag.comSupport our podcast at patreon.com/pelliclemag

Hey there word nerds! Today I have the pleasure of hosting Kevin Brooks on the show! Kevin is a critically acclaimed young adult novelist whose first book, Martyn Pig, was named a Publishers Weekly “Flying Start” selection. Kevin has written many books since then including Black Rabbit Summer, which was shortlisted for the 2009 Carnegie Medal, and The Bunker Diary, which won the Carnegie Medal in 2014. His most recent novel, Born Scared, is a terrifying thriller about a 13-year-old boy named Elliot confined to his home by incapacitating fear. But then on Christmas Eve, a mixup at the pharmacy leaves him with not enough pills. His mother must go out into the snowstorm to get more, and when she doesn’t come back Elliot has to venture out after her on his own. This book really resonated with me on so many levels and I’m sure it will resonate with many of you as well. So listen in as Kevin and I talk about this amazing book, and learning how to embrace the fear of writing not just on the page but as writers. In this episode Kevin and I discuss: Tackling the deeply, dark reality of mental illness on the page. How to deal with “analysis paralysis” and keep writing. Creating drama and suspense when your character is in a very confined space. The technique of shifting between 1st and 3rd person POV, and how to do it right. How to use the design aspects of writing to enhance your story. Plus, Kevin’s #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: DIYMFA.com/237
