This week Jim Norton takes a seat in The Wayback! (Check out his YouTube channel @NikkiandJimNYC). Ryan and Jim get nostalgic about the anxiety of sitting in the wayback as kids, harrowing amusement park rides, and some of the ridiculous safety campaigns from their youth like Mr. Yuk and McGruff the Crime Dog.  Jim also recalls his distaste for family vacations in the outdoors, and the trials of cruising North Brunswick, New Jersey in a Ford Topaz.  Also, don't miss Jim reminiscing about the notorious Frank's Chicken House of New Jersey, which definitely had nothing to do with chicken! After years of scheduling needed preventive maintenance and sitting out the Roadcheck blitz, last year Mike "Mustang" Crawford hauled through his first Roadcheck in years. As we did after last year's 72-hour inspection blitz, we'll be riding along again in this Overdrive Radio edition through three days' worth of scale reports from our friendly on-highway chicken-house correspondent. Regular listeners may well recall that last year on runs from the Midwest all the way down to Florida, Mustang didn't cross a single open scale. Can't say that's the case this year, though. And, for the balance of the episode, shift into high gear with our talk with Sharon Lee, owner of the High Road small fleet headquartered between Nashville, Tennessee, and Boston, and making a name for themselves in the concert tour-trucking world. Lee jumped on our radar after her involvement with the Academy of Country Music's "ACM Lifting Lives" program, through which she partnered with the Mechanics on a Mission organization as well to surprise a touring professional with the gift of an automobile at a TCW event early this year -- TCW's the Touring Career Workshop, and small fleet owner Lee serves as a board member for the organization. Since founding High Road in 2016, she's made big inroads with customers in the music industry here in Nashville, but it turns out her trucking history is just as deep, stretching all the way back to childhood, when her father was an owner-operator in New York State and involved in tour trucking himself. Working with one-man, one-truck operations holds a special place in her approach to this day. This week, filmmaker Cate Jones joins the show to talk about her latest film. Chicken House has been playing the festival circuit this year and has been seen at genre fests such as the Chattanooga Film Festival. This weekend the movie will be playing at The Shawna Shea Memorial Film Festival, The Arizona Underground Film Festival, and the Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival. The film is about four aspiring actresses who live in a house together. When one of them moves out of their home, the other three have to bring in a new roommate. The new addition to their household turns things upside down as tensions rise and some unexpected visitors make their appearance.Chicken House touches on a number of themes. It deals with friendship, sexuality, identity, and the idea of close mindedness versus being open minded. Cate goes into the process of writing the film and how she brought her cast together. There is also a discussion about some of the ideas explored in the film. When we asked if Cate would join our humble little podcast, we also asked if there was a movie she wanted to talk about. She chose an interesting one in 2018's Vox Lux. Blake had to overcome his natural dislike of Natalie Portman in order to discuss a movie that brings a lot of ideas to the table. We talk about the nature of celebrity and tragedy, Portman's performances, and and ending that some may find self-indulgent. We also talk about the strong acting in the movie and how it is impossible to make Jude Law not look handsome. How did this all lead into a talk about Annihilation?Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. In the east, the Washington Post reports that the Wampanoags are not looking forward to the recognition of the 400th anniversary of the first Thanksgiving. Hear why. Then, the BBC has come up with a great story about the general populace and their likely ties to royalty. Next, Fisher visits with Wendell Affield, the author of a series of books on his family history called the Chickenhouse Chronicles. They've been created with a large assist from 200 years worth of family history records found in his mother's chicken house in Minnesota! Catch his remarkable story. Thomas Taylor and I discuss his new novel, MALAMANDER, and writing creepy, atmospheric monster stories for children. We also talk quite a lot about ghosts, flying saucers, and the parts of being a writer that strike us as being a bit magical. And yes, I ask him about designing the UK cover for HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE, but we talk far more about how being an artist influences his writing and vice versa. And, as a bonus, we talk about designing comics. Thomas Taylor is a children's writer and illustrator. He studied at Anglia Ruskin University and attended the Norwich School of Art and Design. Then he spent three years at art school in Cambridge. After finishing his education he found his first job at Heffer’s Children’s Bookshop. He has written and illustrated several picture books, starting with George and Sophie's Museum Adventure in 1999, and has two novels, Haunters and Dan of the Dead. The first one was published in May, 2012 by The Chicken House and the last one was published on 1 June 2012 by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC. Dan of the Dead sequel named Dan and the Caverns of Bone was issued in June, 2013. The book The Pets You Get with his illustrations won the Stockport Schools’ Book Award in 2013 (early years category) and also the Oldham Brilliant Books Award. He also painted the cover art for the first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
