This episode completes our pattern of curious conversations with members of the Human Systems Dynamics (HSD) Community. We couldn't think of a better way to end the season and podcast than inviting, Glenda Eoyang, Founder and Executive Director of the Human Systems Dynamics Institute, back as our special guest. In our first episode, Glenda shared: the history behind HSD, why HSD matters, and advice that anyone new to and familiar with HSD can use now. In this episode, we've asked Glenda to explain something many of us are curious about and that is the HSD Vision. She also shares details about the issue that's at the top of her wicked list. Glenda helps public and private organizations thrive in the face of overwhelming complexity and uncertainty. She is a pioneer in the applications of complexity science to human systems, and she founded the field of HSD in 2001.  As founding executive director of the Human Systems Dynamics Institute, she leads a global network of scholar-practitioners who use her models and methods to see patterns in the chaos that surrounds them, understand the patterns in simple and powerful ways, and take practical steps to shift chaos toward coherence. Her recent clients include the Finnish Research Institute (VTT), US Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, British Columbia Ministry of Health, Oxfam International, The International Baccalaureate Organization, The Sustainability Consortium, the Association for Medical Education in Europe, UK National Health Service, and Roffey Park Institute.  Glenda received her doctorate in HSD from the Union Institute and University in 2001, studying under Drs. Donald Klein and Kevin Dooley. There she discovered three fundamental factors that influence the dynamics of self-organizing change in human systems. This research forms the foundation for the body of work that helps individuals, institutions, and communities respond to complex change. With colleagues around the world, Glenda delivers a hybrid of education and consulting in the form of Adaptive Action Laboratories. Individuals and teams bring their most wicked problems, learn and practice human systems dynamics approaches, and leave with plans for next wise action. Groups from Vancouver to Sao Paulo and Boston to Delhi have used this method to break through apparently intractable issues.  Her published works include scholarly articles in a variety of fields and Radical Rules for Schools: Adaptive Action for Complex Change (HSD Institute, March 2013), and Coping with Chaos: Seven Simple Tools (Lagumo Press, 1996). Glenda's latest book, with co-author Royce Holladay, is Adaptive Action: Leveraging Uncertainty in Your Organization (Stanford University Press, April 2013). It is a roadmap for anyone who chooses to work at the intersection of order and chaos. Glenda grew up in the Texas Panhandle, where there is more sky than ground and the wind “has been blowing for a very long time.” She lives now near the headwaters of the Mississippi River, on a little lake in Circle Pines, Minnesota. Thanks to Zoom, she engages with global partners in local action.  For more information about Glenda and the HSD Institute, visit www.hsdinstitute.org. Hear from Kevin Dooley, Distinguished Professor of Supply Chain Management, as he talks to us about how managing the sustainability of your supply chain is the best approach to risk management. Supply chains are an absolutely integral part of the modern global economy.  But as they grow in complexity, they become more fragile. They are also often opaque to companies wanting to decarbonize through their value chain – that is, covering their so-called scope 3 emissions.    In this episode we look at three main issues: How are companies are analysing their supply chains and adapting them to make them more sustainable and resilient The capabilities that risk professionals should look for when lending or investing in companies that have complex supply chains And the lessons on risk management that we can glean from case studies of supply chain disruptions. We learn that understanding the risks in the supply chain and considering its sustainability are two sides of the same coin.  Links from today's discussion: The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) - https://sustainabilityconsortium.org/ THESIS Supply Chain Sustainability Index - https://sustainabilityconsortium.org/thesis/ Responsible Businesses Alliance (RBA) - https://www.responsiblebusiness.org/ Science Based Targets - https://sciencebasedtargets.org/ Details of Weike & Sutcliffe's research on high reliability organizational cultures Speaker's Bio Kevin Dooley is Distinguished Professor of Supply Chain Management at Arizona State University, and a Senior Sustainability Scientist in the Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation. It's Kevin Dooley time, it's Kevin Dooley time! OK, he may not be Howdy Doody, but the man did play an outsized role as editor and writer at DC Comics in the 90s. You probably know him best as one of the architects of the seminal Emerald Twilight storyline for Green Lantern. He also edited Aquaman during that character's transition from clean-cut and handed to grungy and hooked. And then there's his writing, which he lent to such titles as Mister Miracle and Green Arrow. Interview with Tim Keller Part 1:

Happy Are You Poor

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 17, 2021 59:59

City of the Lord In this episode, Malcolm interviews Tim Keller about his experience in community. Tim discusses the importance of community life and describes the spirituality and activities of the City of the Lord, a Charismatic covenant community which he has been part of for 40 years. We all have a covenant Tim explains that, far from being esoteric or unusual, covenant community is fundamental to the Christian life. Every Christian is part of a covenant relationship with the Lord and with other Christians, simply by virtue of baptism. For Catholics, this is reinforced by the Eucharist, the Sacrament of unity. Community as an “altar call” Building a community is a way to reinforce and claim the covenant we have already entered into with the Lord. This covenant gives us rights and responsibilities that are difficult to live out alone. The community helps individuals to affirm and ratify their commitment. God’s face to the world We discussed the amazing reality of our Christian mission. As members of the Mystical Body, we have to show Christ’s love to the world. The love in a community is the best way to show others the love of Christ. Commitment to one another Tim discussed a fundamental shortcoming that limits the effectiveness of many Catholic programs, from men’s groups to youth outreach: those in the groups are not actually sharing the whole of life together. If the men in a small group, for instance, were actually sharing the whole of life and knew one another’s families, they would be more effective at offering support and guidance. (See our blog post on supporting one another in community here.) “The poverty of riches” In the past, community was natural; people needed one another. Tim pointed out that today, our wealth has created a certain kind of relational poverty. We need to rebuild the kind of caring community that once existed. The City of the Lord Community For 40 years, Tim Keller has been a member of the City of the Lord community, which is based in four cities in Arizona and southern California. It is a Charismatic Covenant Community in which groups of families come together to share life in Christ with one another. Tim described the activities of the community, ranging from block parties to healing ministries, and the many small groups that met under the umbrella of the wider group. For several years, he was also part of their Brotherhood, a group of single men in the community who lived a monastic-style life together. Geographic Relocation Over time, many of the families that made up the community relocated to live near one another in an urban neighborhood in Tempe, Arizona. This made it easier for the community members to maintain an informal social life with one another in addition to more formal planned events. Outreach The community of believers is for a mission, to show the world the love of Christ. Tim Keller described the many ways the City of the Lord reached out to the wider world. Just by living in community, the members were able to provide an attractive witness to others. The Next Episode This is the first of a two-part interview with Tim Keller. In the next episode, Tim will talk about the mistakes that can be made while building community, the Sursum Corda community he is helping to form in New Mexico, practical steps for community building, and the four pillars of community life. More Information You can find the City of the Lord website here. You can find the website of Tim’s community, Sursum Corda, here. Tim mentioned John Paul II’s letter Christifideles Laici, which can be found here. Cover image: Arizona desert. CC BY 2.0: Kevin Dooley

Eden asked: How do you help your teen boy with anxiety? while Katie said My 3.5 year old boy strongly dislikes going to preschool. He started 3 months ago. The teachers reassure me that after I leave, he adjusts and is fine. However, it feels awful to force him through the front door, with the teacher grabbing him on the other side, and him saying he doesn't want to go? Any tips? Ashley -- an introvert -- asked how to cope with her energetic boys: I have 3 boys who love to roughhouse ALL the time. I'm an introvert and thrive in quiet environments. I'm struggling to adjust to the natural rambunctious behavior of little boys. In this episode, Janet & Jen discuss: Helping boys adjust to change and uncomfortable situations How age and personality affect boys' response to change Working with your son to increase his comfort level Using playacting & anticipatory guidance to prepare boys for new situations Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety and depression Affordable at-home treatment for anxiety Differentiating anxiety from nervousness and excitement Separation anxiety Tips for dealing with overwhelm The importance of self-care for introverted boy parents How you can make your house more movement-friendly Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: Helping Teens Cope with Anxiety, Depression & More -- ON BOYS episode Anxiety & Depression in Boys -- ON BOYS episode COPE (Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment) -- evidence-based program proven to help kids with anxiety & depression (mentioned at 7:14) Age of Anxiety: Are We "Pathologizing" Normal Emotion? -- article mentioned at 10:18 The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn -- book mentioned at 15:35 (great for those dealing with separation anxiety!) ‘Digital to physical convergence and the Internet of Apparel, with a sustainability twist!’ Dr. Kevin Dooley, a professor specializing in supply chain at Arizona State University, joins in his role as the Chief Scientist of The Sustainability Consortium (TSC). TSC is a 100+ member community of retail giants including Amazon, Walmart, Walgreens, as well as major CPG Brands, non-profits, and academic institutions. They work across all product categories to determine a way to make the things we buy more sustainable. On this episode, we learn about WearEver, a TSC project with goals to embed technology into apparel to measure usage which has the potential to increase demand for ‘clothes that have better emotional and physical utility and durability’ whilst unlocking a treasure trove of information about where / when / what consumers wear. Kevin discusses what drives interest in tracking usage of consumer products, the potential technologies to achieve this, and their current limitations. Welcome to SoundON Podcast! Your hosts, David Ford and Tim Ostdiek will be bringing you the latest in Colorado's front range and Boulder County's music news, reviews, artist interviews, jam sessions, and more! Tim Ostdiek is a playful, uplifting, and engaging singer, songwriter and performer. He writes feel-good, big-hearted folk with a drop of something funky. With hopeful and purposeful songs, Ostdiek doesn’t shy from the deep and heavy. A tasteful and dynamic guitarist, Tim often fits fingerpicking, strumming, and lead elements into one song. Whether in a concert hall, club, brewery, or living room, he always reaches the hearts of his listeners and sends them out a little brighter than they came in. David Ford is a Nebraska native who started playing music at the age of ten. Falling in love with the art of drumming and orchestral percussion; and later guitar, David is a connoisseur of auditory art. Paired with a love for the sound of radio, he started podcasting in 2009, working with several technology and news podcasts. David is elated with the opportunity to further the music community along the front range of northeastern Colorado.   Our first guest will be John Bunzli! The Songs  John tells stories, stories of people that are familiar, stories that are real.  From the post 9/11 rock anthem “The Rivers Still Flow” to the quiet, bittersweet tale of a doomed affair “The Light”, these songs mirror the truths of the human condition in a vivid often visceral way. The Music  John’s guitar flows through the disc, from gentle finger picked acoustic to searing, emotional riffs. The rhythms and textures are deep and rich and are complemented by some of Colorado’s finest musicians including John Magnie (Subdudes), Nick Forster and Christian Teele (E Town), Bill McKay (Leftover Salmon), Ron Miles (Bill Frisell), Edwin Hurwitz (Great American Taxi) and more.   Music Calendar Wednesday Oct 31 Rosalee’s Pizza Dave Coile at 7PM Thursday Nov 1 Tasty Weasel Jackson Cloud Band at 6PM Laughing Goat Tim Ostdiek and Molly Kollier Music at 8PM St Vrain Cidery Nick Critchlow at 6PM Still Cellars Teresa Storch Duo and Kevin Dooley at 7PM Friday Nov 2 Laughing Goat Ramaya & The Troubadours at 8PM Bootstrap Brewing Deborah Stafford & The State of Affairs at 6PM Aggie Theatre DeadPhish Orchestra at 9PM Saturday Nov 3 Tasty Weasel Coop and the Chicken Pluckers at 4:30 PM Oskar Blues HMLS Clandestine Amigo Saturday at 8:30PM Dickens Opera House The Long Run (Eagles Tribute) at 7PM The Wild Game Shotgun Lullaby at 8PM Sunday Nov 4 Tasty Weasel The Farmer Sisters at 3PM Left Hand Brewery Andy Eppler at 4PM Laughing Goat Sam Paul, bellhoss, and Jon Pierce at 8PM Monday Nov 5 CU Boulder College of Music Student Showcase at 8PM Tuesday Nov 6 Grateful Dawg Sessions at Rosalees at 7PM Tim Ostdiek at The Old Mine at 6PM

Ectoplasm in canon (in C minor) faciliteret af Kevin Dooley & Stefan A. Pedersen 2. Hello out there, you wonderful people you, and thanks for listening to another episode of Just One of the Guys. This week, our look at the Green Lantern and Guy Gardner books begins with Green Lantern #61, where Kyle and his snuggle bunny (I'm pretty certain that's the correct term Kevin Dooley mandated she be called) Donna Troy are having a nice little picnic...or the surface of Mars (Hope they didn't tell J'onn J'onnz, because he might be a little miffed with them cavorting all over the barren wasteland that was once his home). But the fun and finger sandwiches will have to wait for our duo, as the Overlord of Apokolips, Darkseid, has sent Kalibak to break up their happy-fun time. And Darkseid also does a little tag popping...whatever that means. Over with Guy, we get a trip to Metropolis in Action Comics 709 where our favorite morphing ginger tries to get some help dealing with his wacky alien hybrid DNA from the Man of Steel. But mostly what he gets is a beatdown in the Metropolis Tunnel, where they appear to be pretty lax in allowing people to transport hazardous materials. This leads into Guy Gardner Warrior #30, where we find out who would win in a fight between Guy and Superman...and strangely enough, the winner is actually SuperGIRL...who saw that coming? Plus we get Mitch Byrd drawing the Last Son of Krypton, which is always awesome for me. But the biggest bonus this episode is I have another wonderful guest host with me this time. Mr J David Weter, host of PAD Smash, Superman Forever Radio, and Green Lantern's Light amongst a myriad of others was kind enough to drop by and add his humor, wit, and charm to the show. Plus he did the synopsis for Action 709, so less work for me...huzzah! As always, David was a blast to have on the show, and you should definitely go check out his podcasts. So unless you want Darkseid to whip out his mad beats on his kickin' sound system, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and start to listening!
