Today on Scope Conditions: college dorms shed light on where group culture comes from and how it molds us.At Harry Potter's alma mater, each new student is assigned to a House that aligns with their true character. The mystical Sorting Hat takes the courageous ones and sorts them into House Gryffindor, while the studious know-it-alls go to Ravenclaw. The Sorting Hat may be fiction, but it's actually a lot like life. Much of the social world works this way: whether by assignment or by self-selection, people often end up in social environments that already fit with their pre-existing beliefs and traits.For social scientists, what's often called homophily – this tendency for like to attract like – can make it difficult to study the impact of social context itself. Do people tend to believe and act like those around them because they're influenced by their surroundings, or because they're drawn to places that already fit their pre-existing characteristics?Our guest today, Dr. Joan Ricart-Huguet, found a real-world social setting that helps him untangle these possibilities. At East Africa's oldest institution of higher education, Makerere University in Uganda, incoming students have for decades been allocated to their residence halls by lottery, rather than by personality type. For Joan, Makerere's randomly assigned dorms have been the perfect laboratory for studying how the cultural characteristics of a social organization arise, endure, and shape people's beliefs and habits over time. Joan is an assistant professor of political science at Loyola University Maryland, and we talk with him about a pair of recent articles he wrote on cultural emergence, persistence, and transmission. Joan tells us about the months of in-depth interviews and immersive fieldwork he conducted on the Makerere campus as well as the natural experiment afforded by random residential assignment that allowed him to test alternative theories of cultural differentiation, reproduction, and impact.For example, Joan tells us the stories of how distinct hall cultures emerged historically at Makerere – how Livingston Hall came to be known as the residence of respectful gentlemen while Lumumba Hall earned a reputation for rowdy activism. Adrien Huguet, ancien jeune adjoint à la mairie de Saint-Apollinaire et ancien attaché parlementaire, a mis fin à ses jours dans la nuit du 1er au 2 mars 2023. Un événement qui a marqué de nombreuses personnes dans l'agglomération dijonnaise tant il était connu et apprécié. Un an après son décès, une association a été lancée pour lui rendre hommage et pour faire perdurer les valeurs humanistes et les actions sociales qu'il avait entreprises durant sa jeune vie d'homme politique.Nous avons reçu Corinne Spellat, Franck Desrayaud et Laurent Bourguignat, membres du bureau de cette nouvelle association. Cette semaine, je rencontre Olivier Huguet et Yannick Letort, deux maîtres-coiffeurs installés sur les hauteurs de Gstaad. Olivier et son partenaire Yannick ont reçu deux formations d'exception avec deux maîtres de la coiffure moderne. L'un avec Vidal Sassoon, dans le cadre de la coiffure anglaise, l'autre avec Jean-Marc Maniatis, dans celui de la coiffure française. Après le temps de l'apprentissage, est née pour tous les deux, la nécessité d'exprimer leur propre créativité en se mettant au service de leur propre clientèle. A conversation with Ricard Huguet, MOT '04, from his start as Director of Innovation for the City of Barcelona, to following his vision of leveraging LEGO robotics for innovation in STEM education in both classrooms and executive suites. Ricard speaks about listening to his customers for ideas, the pivot he made in his company in 2008—in the face of the global economic downturn—and the latest addition of an online platform that has extended his reach exponentially. Ricard also talks about the lessons and confidence he gained from attending MIT Sloan and the lasting value he gets and gives to the MIT community. Ricard speaks about the saddest day of his life, namely the last day as a student at MIT, and the powerful message he heard, but initially did not understand, from Professor Rebecca Henderson. She reminded him and his classmates about the blessing of attending MIT, which so few in the world can do, and the importance of working for a company that does something for the community. She advised him to either start his own venture or be sure that his values align with the company's values, but not to settle for less. Ricard also speaks about the resonance of the "Create, Capture, Deliver" framework and how he uses this when assessing either his own business model or start-ups that approach him for advice or investment. Ricard talks about his investment approach, which starts with the team and then the idea. He speaks about the challenge for him and other investors in managing their portfolios and how he created an organization to help him and others to improve their performance. Finally, Ricard's advice to prospective Sloanies is to embrace the ecosystem, live there, enjoy people, get into labs, collaborate with people, and join clubs.
