What's the difference between a maser and a megamaser? How does uncertainty lead science to its newest discoveries? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome back radio astronomer Dr. Jackie Villadsen, a professor at Bucknell University currently researching star/planet magnetic interaction in exoplanet systems. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing. In November 2024 a group of researchers announced that they'd found a series of megamasers around the supermassive black hole system NGC1068, and that for the first time ever, they'd measured the polarization of the water megamasers. Jackie, who studies a different kind of maser, explains what they are (“just a really, really big laser pointer in space that shoots out radio waves or microwaves”) and why they're important. Jackie studies masers around nearby stars, which are much smaller than megamasers that can be seen from other galaxies. Allen shares the fact that some megamasers can be around half a parsec (trillions of miles) across and bigger than our entire solar system. Then it's time for our first question for Jackie. It's from Guadalupe, who says, “I recall reading or watching a video that stated there is liquid on Mars beneath an "ice cap" - is that right?” According to Dr. Villadsen, the question is right on the cutting edge of our understanding, with promising evidence emerging right now that suggests the answer might be yes, although more investigation is necessary before we can confirm it. After our break, Jackie tells us about the research she's doing using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) while on her current sabbatical. You'll hear about Karl Jansky's breakthrough discovery of radio waves from space made nearly 100 years ago. Jackie brings us up to speed on the evolution of radio astronomy and why we're able to get more data than ever out of the same telescopes. Our next question comes from Bryant: “What do you think would have happened if the universe was created a bit earlier than usual? Would anything have changed?” It turns out, there's more than one way to look at this speculative question, and Jackie and Chuck ponder the possibility of having miscalculated the age of the universe and the impact that an older universe would have on the rate of universal expansion, the perception of dark energy, and more. Next up, Jackie tells us about the research she and her colleagues (including grad students!) have been involved with looking for star/planet magnetic interaction in nearby exoplanet systems. The search is inspired by the interaction in our solar system between the magnetic field of Jupiter and two of its closest moons, Io and Ganymede. While there are no confirmed examples yet, they already have one candidate out of the seven exoplanet systems they've studied. Our next question comes from Samuel, who asks, “As an astrophysics professor, how is the work-life balance and overall lifestyle of a researcher? My dream is to become a mechanical engineer in the field of astrophysics.” Jackie explains how she approaches work, and what it took to reach the balanced state she's in now compared to when she was a grad student. We end the episode with another of Jackie's book recommendations. Last time she was here she recommended the adult sci-fi romance, “The Ladies Guide to Celestial Mechanics” by Olivia Waite. This time, it's another adult sci-fi romance with a bit of a mystery woven through it, “The Stars Too Fondly” by Emily Hamilton. The title is taken from a poem, “The Old Astronomer to His Pupil” by Sarah Williams, from which Jackie reads a snippet. She and Chuck also discuss one of their favorite poems, “The Learned Astronomer,” by Walt Whitman, found in his collection, “Leaves of Grass.” We hope you enjoy this episode of The LIUniverse, and, if you do, please support us on Patreon. What can exoplanets teach us about our own solar system? Dr. Charles Liu explores the furthest reaches of our galaxy with the help of Vassar College astrophysicist Jackie Villadsen and co-host Allen Liu. As always, our episode starts with the day's cosmically cool thing: a weird and fun exoplanet system called K2-290 that's exhibiting some crazy celestial mechanics. Find out what a K2 designation means, how the Kepler space telescope overcame a mechanical disaster, and why reaction wheels are really important! (Plus, we geek out a little bit about Star Wars and Tatooine!) Our first student question, from Jean from New York City, “Is life possible on exoplanets?” kicks off a discussion of why we don't know the answer yet. Jackie sums up the efforts of tens of thousands of scientists all around the globe involved in the search for life on extra-solar planets, including the different signals solar system scientists look for compared to extrasolar astronomers. You'll hear how many exoplanets we've discovered already – get an update from “Future Allen” that you won't want to miss! Jackie shares her experiences using – and climbing all over – the Very Large Array radio telescope, the same ground-based telescope system that Jodie Foster was sitting in the movie Contact. You'll learn about the birth of radio astronomy, coronagraphs, and why radio bursts from the sun are so intriguing. The trio talks about red dwarf stars and coronal mass ejections, including what they can tell us about our own solar system and why CMEs from our own sun could be responsible for the arid Mars we see now. We also get to know more about Ruby Payne-Scott, the groundbreaking astronomer who, along with her colleagues, first found and categorized radio bursts from our sun in Australia after WWII. You'll discover why she had to hide her marriage from the government in order to pursue her career. We also take one of our more interesting pop culture diversions so far, when Jackie tells us about her guilty pleasure: romance novels, including “The Ladies Guide to Celestial Mechanics” by Olivia Waite, set in the 1800s. Finally, we grapple with a philosophical question from Walter T., one of our Patreon Patrons, that ponders existence and whether true nothingness could be possible. The answer takes us from the edge of the Big Bang to the implications of Einstein's Theory of General Relativity and the ever-increasing space between galaxies. This episode will tell the stories of Caroline Herschel and Mary Somerville. It features an interview with Olivia Waite, who combines the two historic women in her protagonist the regency, sapphic, romance novel The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics. Caroline Herschel was the first woman to discover a comet and artfully navigated the scientific world of the 18th and early 19th century to become one of the first paid women astronomers. Mary Somerville was potentially the most successful scientific writer of all time. Self-taught and charming, she grasped complex concepts in all physical sciences and communicated them to the world in her many books. But learning about the lives of these scientific women does not provide understanding of what their life felt like. Often, women who contributed to science are left out of history or parts of their identity have been erased. To rectify this gap in the traditional historical narrative, historical fiction and romance writers depict vivid and realistic stories of the lives that rarely make history books. In her interview, she shares how she researches and writes historical romance and the importance of this genre to showcase LGBTQ+ identities.

Hey pals! In this episode, we're giggling over The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite. Join us as we swoon over Lucy, a Regency Era astronomer and all around sexy badass, as she translates a French book and seduces her patron/friend/lover, the very-talented-with-her-hands Catherine, Countess of Moth. We loved watching these ladies fall in love and generally just have a really healthy relationship filled with many orgasms and much feminism. Amanda and Jenn discuss dark Shakespeare retellings, where to start with cyberpunk, books on life transitions, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. Follow the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher. This content contains affiliate links. When you buy through these links, we may earn an affiliate commission. Feedback Lavinia by Ursula Le Guin, Margaret Atwood's Penelopiad, books by Hannah Kent or Sarah Perry (rec'd by Laura) Among Others by Jo Walton (rec'd by Lottie) Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender (rec'd by Gina) Questions 1. My husband announced recently that he wants a divorce. We've been married 10 years and I don't want a divorce, but we are going that direction anyway. Do you have any nonfiction recommendations with useful advice on how to emotionally manage the transition and after? Or any fiction suggestions where the female character ends up leading a satisfying single life post divorce with no romantic happy endings? Preferably without any characters that are happily single because they lead privileged lives with lots of money. I'm soon 40 years old and we have no children if that helps you target your recommendations. Thanks. -Katie 2. Hi! I'm a white, cis-gender, lesbian. Over the past year I have started to discover just how bad the public school system failed me. I know next to nothing about black history or culture. I want to do better and would love some books on anti-racism, black history, or black culture. I normally read fiction and often struggle with non-fiction feeling like a textbook. Some non-fiction authors I've really liked have been Trevor Noah, Michelle Obama, Ali Wong, and Tara Westover. Thank you so much! I'm attaching my goodreads list. -Jessica 3. I've just started reading Hogarth's Macbeth retelling by Jo Nesbo. I'm loving the dark and gritty feeling of the story. I was wondering if you had any more recommendations for dark, gritty retellings of Shakespeare's tragedies. I'm not looking for retellings of his comedies or other lighter plays, but more Macbeth, Hamlet, maybe The Tempest retellings would work. I'm also not looking for YA recommendations or any type of romance books (although this probably wouldn't be what you would recommend anyway)! If you can't think of any of these, any retellings of dark or gothic classics like Jane Eyre, etc. would also work! Thanks a bunch! -Kari 4. Hi, ladies! I love this show, I've been a listener since this podcast's very first episode, but I've never sent in a question before. Recently I've become interested in reading some cyberpunk, but I'm not quite sure where to start. Most of what I know of the genre is from video games, and I'm very drawn to the aesthetic, and attitude, and its anticapitalism politics. I did read Necromancer and I remember enjoying it, but that was when I was maybe fourteen. I'm in my mid-twenties now, and I don't remember all that much of it, or if I would even still like it. I keep hearing about Snow Crash, but from what I have gathered it's better read if you have some familiarity with the genre already. I would love any recommendations you could give. Bonus points if the books are not straight, white, and male. Thank you so much for your show, and all the book recommendations you have given me over the years. For reference if you would like to know my reading tastes, here is some sci-fi I have recently read and loved (though is not cyberpunk) (and yes, I think I may have at least discovered half of these books through your show): The Broken Earth Trilogy (which I guess is also fantasy, it's hard to pin one genre onto this series, but it is maybe my favorite series of all time so I thought it was important to include) Gideon the Ninth A Memory Called Empire This Is How You Lose the Time War The Machineries of Empire Series Ancillary Justice -Marisol 5. In a few weeks, I will be moving to a new state where I don't know anyone and I have no connections, to attend medical school. It will be my first time not living with my parents/family (and beloved kitties), and I'm scared that I won't be able to cope with the transition into this completely new environment and this new phase in my life. I'm looking for recommendations for fictional characters in a similar situation (YA or adult), or non-fiction books that may have tips on how to go through a huge life transition and maintain good mental health. Thanks in advance. -Anonymous 6. I'm looking for romance/erotica with adorable characters and delightfully emotional relationships. I'm new to the “romance” genre: I've read and loved Olivia Waite's the feminine persuits series and The Queer Principles of Kit Webb. I've read most of the Sebastian St Cyr series and enjoyed it. I LOVE the romances in the Graceling series and I did enjoy ACOTAR despite feeling ick about some of the weirdly agressive heteronormativity and creepy possessiveness etc. SO basically, I want steamy like ACOTAR but with nuanced and cute relationships where characters can heal and work out their issues together and find love and support. I prefer historical or fantasy, no mystery/thriller please and no really cliched writing. One Last Stop is on my radar as is The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham and The Duke who Didn't by Courtney Milan. If you can rec books in series or by really prolific authors that would be amazing! -Margot 7. Always loving your recommendations! I was wondering if you know of any books that are written from a perspective of an object or from a different unique perspective. I've loved how The Book Thief is written in the perfective of death and would love to read more from uncommon views. Thank you so much as always!
