Sex, drugs, religion, and love are potent combinations in la zona, a regulated prostitution zone in the city of Reynosa, across the border from Hidalgo, Texas. During the years 2008 and 2009, a time of intense drug violence, Sarah Luna met and built relationships with two kinds of migrants, women who moved from rural Mexico to Reynosa to become sex workers and American missionaries who moved from the United States to forge a fellowship with those workers. Luna examines the entanglements, both intimate and financial, that define their lives. Using the concept of obligar, she delves into the connections that tie sex workers to their families, their clients, their pimps, the missionaries, and the drug dealers—and to the guilt, power, and comfort of faith. Love in the Drug War: Selling Sex and Finding Jesus on the Mexico-US Border (University of Texas Press, 2020) scrutinizes not only la zona and the people who work to survive there, but also Reynosa itself—including the influences of the United States—adding nuance and new understanding to the current Mexico-US border crisis. The book has been recently awarded the 2020 Ruth Benedict Prize by the Association for Queer Anthropology for its “vibrant ethnographic detail and deft work across conceptual fields.” This interview is part of an NBN special series on “Mobilities and Methods.” Sarah Luna is the Kathryn A. McCarthy Assistant Professor in Women's Studies in the Department of Anthropology and the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at Tufts University, with a focus on issues of sexual labor, migration, race, borderlands, and queer studies. Alize Arıcan is a PhD candidate in the department of Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her research focuses on urban renewal, futurity, care, and migration in Istanbul, Turkey. Her work has been featured on City & Society, entanglements: experiments in multimodal ethnography, and Anthropology News. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This was one of those interviews that I didn't want to end. I enjoyed today's guest Luna Love so much. Her big truth was around the body and mind being colonized. We explored: -The European standard of beauty. -Righteousness, entitlement and hierarchy. -The internal conflict that comes with being mixed race. -Decentering the prioritization of ourselves and our work, businesses, missions, etc. -And we also got into grief, desire, leadership and power. It's a really deep, really rich conversation. Enjoy and share! About Luna Love: Luna is a Woman of Devotion, a Transformational Leadership Mentor and host of the Ladies Who Lead Podcast. Another 8 episodes have passed and your host Luna Love (www.lunaloveleadership.com) is here to share on healthy allyship, the #metoo movement, and what we can all do to show up in our inner and outer service work with greater alignment to our feminist values. She discusses the messy, not fun, things that come up and how we can educate ourselves on systemic white supremacy that affects us all. We look at ways in which we can walk side-by-side in these efforts together, with the willingness to learn. Welcome to this week's podcast episode with our featured guest Luna Love. In this episode, we spend time talking about the art of listening and how to listen to the needs of your body and the needs of your life. Enjoy!
Some of you may remember Luna Love from an episode where she interviewed me for her show - The Ladies Who Lead Podcast - where I shared my 4 Keys to Feminine Leadership. I invited Luna on RWL to share about creative entrepreneurship, how she uses the muse to go for her dreams and about the process of inner marriage and how we can use it to come into wholeness to attract a loving partner. One of the things I admire about this woman is her ability to accomplish so much - while nurturing a feminine way of being and living - one of the values I hold so dear in my own business. In this episode she shares some of her secrets to "getting it all done" while creating space for what matters most. “Our capacity to receive as women is really not about other people giving us things but about our willingness to receive our unlimited potential and through the receptivity of that greatness lies the energy to create more and be of greater service…” ~ Luna Love In this episode Luna shares about: The “I can” vs. “I can’t” voice and how she came to be a women’s leadership mentor How to decipher and tune into intuition Tips on how we can find our purpose Creativity and the muse - what it is and how to use it to go after your dreams Luna’s secret to “getting it all done!” Inner marriage, personal responsibility and the list you need to write if you want to call in and attract a loving partnership The relationship tool Luna uses to use to cut through illusion and deepen connection Luna’s take on when it’s time to “feel the fear and do it anyway” and how to go about it — Luna is a Women’s Leadership Mentor, assisting those called to be change-makers in the world, in achieving clear vision for their lives by providing supportive, life-promoting experiences, practical tools and spiritual wisdom to align one’s divine essence, authentic expression and life-purpose. She creates transformative experiences for her clients through the power of self-awareness and self-love. Luna facilitates online courses, group coaching, workshops, immersion programs and retreats to support her clients in devoting themselves to themselves, and serving the world from that place. Additionally she works as a counselor at a leading holistic drug and alcohol rehabilitation center and writes for numerous online publications. Most of all Luna is devoted to walking her path in the beauty way.

In the episode I also share my "4 Keys to Feminine Leadership" and the women who have inspired me most over recent years. "When you share your fear, it starts to lose its charge." Here's what else you'll find in this episode: My personal process of how I execute my creative ideas How I let go of "distractions" of alcohol, sugar, and busy-ness in my life to listen to my body's wisdom and needs How I moved from a fear of self-expression and being seen to becoming a yoga teacher and entrepreneur My dark night of the soul - how I knew I reached my breaking point where I needed to make a big shift in my life How I discovered yoga and met my first spiritual teacher, Amma If I feel fear, but even just a little bit of excitement, I know that's a good sign for me to walk closer to it..." How I handle my inner critic voice and limiting beliefs Practices to listen to your body wisdom, face your fears, and create layers of support in your life The story of what happened when I shared my first song on the harmonium How I call upon a higher power to manifest my desires The women who have inspired me the most in business and life A sneak preview of details about the book I've been writing for the last year about my travels in India Did you enjoy this episode?
