Send us a textWhen Mark MacNicol stepped into a maximum security prison in 2016 to lead a theatre project with inmates serving life sentences, he couldn't have predicted how profoundly it would change his career trajectory. A writer, director, and producer by trade, MacNicol found himself captivated by the therapeutic potential of creative expression—particularly for those who would never identify as "creative types."This revelation birthed Anonymous Drama, a groundbreaking approach that has now touched over 5,000 lives across prisons, rehabilitation centers, and community settings. At its core, the program challenges participants to examine the incessant conversation happening in their minds 24/7. While most of us accept this internal dialogue as simply "our thoughts," MacNicol's approach separates these voices into distinct characters—particularly the inner critic (negative) and the inner mentor (positive). What makes this methodology revolutionary is its accessibility. MacNicol designed it specifically for people with zero interest in drama or therapy, yet who desperately need both. Through character development, improvisations, and script work, participants explore deeply personal issues through fictional characters, creating a protective layer of anonymity that makes vulnerability possible. The culmination—a live script reading before family and community members—has facilitated countless reconciliations between participants and estranged loved ones. For those unable to attend in-person sessions, MacNicol has developed "Find your Mentor," a smartphone-accessible program that leverages custom AI to represent one's inner mentor. As he explains, "Rather than being trapped in a conversation in your head listening to the inner critic, we want you to engage with your inner mentor." This integration of technology with therapeutic principles demonstrates MacNicol's forward-thinking approach to emotional wellbeing.Whether you're struggling with addiction, involved in the justice system, or simply seeking a better relationship with yourself, MacNicol's work offers a unique pathway forward. Visit his social media platforms to discover how Anonymous Drama might transform your inner dialogue and, by extension, your life.Want to be a guest on Living the Dream with Curveball? Today we have the singular Glynnis MacNicol, journalist, memoirist and author of the new book, I'm Mostly Here to Enjoy Myself: One Woman's Pursuit of Pleasure in Paris. We explore what it means to be a woman untethered, single, child-free and a quest to have fun -- for fun's sake. Gylnnis' memoir takes place during the summer of 2021, as she ventured from NYC to Paris during the global pandemic. We discuss the economics of being Gynnis, how she afforded her time abroad, and how she affords many of her rich experiences (without needing to spend money).

"When you're a woman of a certain age, you are only promised that everything will get worse. But what if everything you've been told is a lie?" This is the leading question of Glynnis MacNicol's dazzling new memoir, I'm Mostly Here to Enjoy Myself. The acclaimed author joins us this week for a personal, intimate and delightful interview that explores her unabashed pursuit of pleasure—and why she was inspired to write a book about it. After spending 16 excruciating months isolated and alone in her tiny Manhattan apartment during the pandemic, 46-year-old MacNicol did something that some would consider daring but to her, felt like necessity: she fled to Paris. Her memoir recounts the "decadent, joyful, unexpected journey into one woman's pursuit of radical enjoyment." "The pursuit of enjoyment is a political act," the book declares, "both a right and a responsibility. Enjoying yourself—as you are—is not something the world tells you is possible, but it is." We welcome back Chris McGhee to give us an update on his career and advocacy work. After retiring from the United States Air Force in 2018, Chris moved to Maine and enrolled in law school. After earning his Juris Doctor in 2022, Chris began working as an attorney for Jackson & MacNicol. He is on track to earn his Master of Law degree by the end of the year. Chris is the host of the 20 Years Done podcast that focuses on organizational culture. This episode is dedicated to his advocacy work and his findings regarding the Air Force maintainers, their culture and their high rates of suicide. While Chris was working toward his degree, he was spending dozens of hours a week on his advocacy work for veterans. He was submitting requests, producing podcasts, writing blogs and contacting people. Chris realized he had the opportunity to marry his love for the law and passion for veteran advocacy as a VA disability attorney. When Chris left the military in 2018, he was very concerned at the new operational expectations being placed on personnel. He believed the effects of the 2014 sequestration played a role in the heightened suicide rates among the ranks. Between 2010-2014, the Air Force cut 10-15% of jobs in the maintenance career fields and consequently did not meet standards. Remaining personnel, including Chris, experienced major burnout. He used his podcast and blog to talk about the issue and caught the attention of Senator Angus King. When Senator King asked Chris to draft legislation, he put his schoolwork on hold and focused his attention on drafting federal legislation. Thanks to his perseverance, the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act now requires all the military services components to report to the House Armed Services Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee all suicides by job code for all branches and components from 9/22/2001 until present. This data will illuminate issues within the services. As an attorney fighting on behalf of veterans for disability compensation, Chris's job is to review claims for clients, ensure they meet appeal timelines and represent the clients in hearings for the Board of Veterans Appeals. Because Chris is a veteran, he is able to build an instant rapport with his clients and enjoys educating them in the appeal process.Without the uniform, Chris has the ability through his podcast and blog to express his views on issues in the military. He recognizes that the best advocating often occurs when someone has recently left the military. As more time passes since his retirement, Chris is cognizant that he has less information about the current culture and experience and works hard to have recently separated and retired veterans share their experiences through his podcast and blog.Preliminary data suggests that the top 3 career fields in the Air Force that experience more suicides per capita per year than other jobs are aircraft maintenance, security forces and intel. Although his advocacy window is closing with each passing year, Chris is grateful that his current position allows him to help veterans through the disability appeals process. It's important to remember that Chris has volunteered his time and knowledge for veteran advocacy. While he has received no compensation for his part in the 2022 legislation, he recognizes that his volunteerism has made him a better attorney. Subscribe to our YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/llforvets22Connect with Chris at https://www.linkedin.com/in/cmcghee358/SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A FIVE-STAR REVIEW and share this with other veterans who might need help as they transition from the military!
Well hello again, we've had a busy week since we last spoke. We're here to recap it all PLUS welcome to the show a most excellent guest. Come on in, the kettle's just off the boil. We spend the majority of this week's intro blethering about the epic Auchterarder Running Festival, a warm weekend of racing and achievement in glorious Perthshire. We do have a quick nip over to the Aosta Valley to see how a few pals of the show got on in the gruelling Tor Des Géants. Neil MacNicol then joins the fray, a familiar face on the Scottish Ultra Running circuit, himself a superb athlete as well as being pivotal to many others in his role as run coach. First up we find out all about Neil's running back story and his entrepreneurial motivation to set up his successful run coaching business RunRecover (see link below). It's Neil's personal successes and approach though that we home in on, after breaking into ultra running races back in 2011 it's fair to say he's achieved great heights. A methodical approach, a discipline and a love for stats and data emerge as we get under the lid of what drives Neil on and gives him his competitive edge. From early impressive forays into the marathon distance Neil recaps finding his strengths in longer distances, the appeal of the hills and trails winning over the tarmac and towpaths he'd started off with. A love affair with the Lake District is apparent and his regular return ticket to Coniston to take part in the Lakeland 100 each year dominates our chat. A first go at the Lakeland 50 in 2023 allowed for Neil to race hard, it was one he was up for ending in a superb victory. With a glimpse forward to an up n coming Bob Graham Round attempt thrown in along with all your YHRF favourites (fav kit, fav scran etc etc) this episode covers all the bases. Enjoy and let us know what you think! Abstract: Complexity science offers a framework for analysing high dimensional, non-linear interacting systems such as financial markets or activity in the brain, to extract meaningful dynamic information for decision-making or scientific enquiry. By virtue of the data involved, various analytical methods are required for dimensionality reduction, clustering, discrete analysis, continuous flow analysis, and for estimations of complexity. We introduce EiDA (Eigenvector Dynamic Analysis), a closed form analytical methodology to losslessly extract dynamical functional connectivity (dFC) information from instantaneous phase-locking matrices (iPL). EiDA builds on the existing LEiDA approach (Leading Eigenvector Dynamic Analysis), by showing that the iPL matrix is of rank 2, and can thus be completely characterised by two eigenvectors. We give a full analytical derivation of the eigenvectors and their associated eigenvalues. As a second step we propose two alternatives to analyze the time evolution of the iPL matrix or equivalently of instantaneous connectivity patterns: i) Discrete EiDA, which identifies a discrete set of phase locking states using k-means clustering on the decomposed iPL matrices, and ii) Continuous EiDA, which introduces a 2-dimensional position and reconfiguration speed representation of the eigenvectors. In Continuous EiDA, dynamic Functional Connectivity is conceived as a continuous exploration of this 2-D space. Finally, we show that the two non-trivial eigenvalues are interdependent as their sum is equal to the number of signal channels, and define spectral metastability as the standard deviation of the the spectral radius, the first eigenvalue. Finally, we compute informational complexity using the Lempel-Ziv-Welch algorithm. We apply EiDA to a dataset comprising a cohort of M=48 rats among N=44 brain regions, scanned with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at T=4 stages during a study of ageing. We previously found that static functional connectivity declined with age. In dFC, we found that using only the leading eigenvector resulted in the loss of dFC information, and that this was exacerbated with ageing. Additionally, we found that while k-means clustering did not yield satisfactory partitioning, continuous EiDA provided a marker for ageing. Specifically we found that reconfiguration speed of the first eigenvector increased significantly over the life-span concurrent with a reduction in spectral metastability. In addition, we found an increase in informational complexity with age, and that this complexity was highly, significantly and inversely correlated (R = 0.95, p less than 0.001) with the magnitude of the first eigenvalue of the iPL matrix. Finally, the computation time for EiDA outperforms numerical spectral decomposition algorithms: 2 orders of magnitude faster for 100x100 matrices, and 3 orders of magnitude faster for 10,000x10,000 matrices. EiDA provides an analytically principled method to extract connectivity (relationship) information without loss from high-dimensional time-series, establishes a link between dynamical systems and information complexity in resting state neuroimaging, and significantly reduces computational time for high-dimensional data. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.10.507418v1?rss=1 Authors: Singh, N., MacNicol, E., DiPasquale, O., Randall, K. L., Ndabezinhle, M., Simmons, C., Selvaggi, P., Stephenson, S., Turkheimer, F. E., Cash, D., Zelaya, F., Colasanti, A. Abstract: Methylene Blue (MB) is a brain-penetrating drug with putative neuroprotective, antioxidant and metabolic enhancing effects. In vitro studies suggest that MB enhances mitochondrial complexes activity. However, no study has directly assessed the haemodynamic and metabolic effects of MB in the human brain. We used in vivo neuroimaging to measure the effect of MB on cerebral blood flow (CBF) and brain metabolism in humans and in rats. Two doses of MB (0.5 and 1 mg/kg in humans; 2 and 4 mg/kg in rats; iv) induced reductions in global cerebral blood flow (CBF) in humans (F(1.74, 12.17)5.82, p=0.02) and rats (F(1,5)26.04, p=0.0038). Human cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) was also significantly reduced (F(1.26, 8.84)8.01, p=0.016), as was the rat cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (CMRglu) (t=2.6(16) p=0.018). This was contrary to our hypothesis that MB will increase CBF and energy metrics. Nevertheless, our results were reproducible across species and dose dependent. One possible explanation is that the concentrations used, although clinically relevant, reflect MB's hormetic effects, i.e., higher concentrations produce inhibitory rather than augmentation effects on metabolism. Additionally, here we used healthy volunteers and healthy rats with normal cerebral metabolism where MB's ability to enhance cerebral metabolism might be limited. In this week's pod we welcomed Donnie MacNicol to talk about the art of complex change management. Donnie is the founder of Team Animation which works across multiple sectors energising leaders and teams delivering complex change to maximise value and certainty of success through a focus on the human dimension. Donnie acts as a catalyst to support organisations to improve their collaboration and productivity – aspects that will be critical to tackling the many challenges we face today including climate change and in particular in meeting the NetZero target. The main topics we discussed on the podcast were as follows: Change management is treated differently from Project Management. It should be regarded on an equal footing Project and Programme Managers should have a change management responsibility as part of their job description IMA can be used to structure conversation based on personality preference. This is similar to the Insights When companies do offsite meetings, they often discuss business issues during the morning and focus on people in the afternoon as it is seen as lighter and easier. This should be reversed Not enough people use tools such as Insights / IMA to understand the stakeholders when trying to understand complex projects When starting on a complex project, try to ingest as much knowledge as possible and seek to diagnose the key problems and root cause of failures. Be cynical when reviewing change projects. Who really stands to win or lose from the success of a change being implemented? Managers could implement a stakeholder map with a RAG status on who would benefit from the change being implemented The main learning point from people in project management has been cultural, getting managers and organisations to truly care about people and personality types. Models such as Insights, DISC and IMA have supported this The main reasons for change project failure are nonsense! It does not seek to ask why the reason for failure happened. Root cause, not symptom Consultancies are often the main beneficiary from project failure! Here are links to some of the topics that were discussed: IMA Model – Personality Types: http://ima-pm.co.uk/ Opiner - Video Research Resource: https://opiner.app/ ----------------------------------------- Join us next week when we're joined by Jo Lucas to talk about rewilding organisation and minimal interference approach to change management. Corrye put it best: we were due for a healthy dose of bullsh*t on the podcast. In Luke's opinion, Dragonslayer provided more than its fair share of it. The dragon special effects had the Chumps cheering. The cinematography, too. But then there's Peter MacNicol. And the fake Gandalf guy. And that weird skinny-dipping scene. And that goofy final 30 seconds with the horse. A laundry list of horsesh*t, indeed.
The 1981 movie DRAGONSLAYER may be little remembered today, but it contains lots of magic and adventure. And more gore than you might expect from a Disney production. And surprising explosions. A lot of spoilers in this episode, so please beware.
Glasgow writer/film-maker Mark MacNicol on the real-life experience and afterlife research behind his new movie "Dreaded Light"
Over the course of her fortieth year, which this memoir chronicles, Glynnis MacNicol embarks on a revealing journey of self-discovery that continually contradicts everything she'd been led to expect. Through the trials of family illness and turmoil, and the thrills of far-flung travel and adventures with men, young and old (and sometimes wearing cowboy hats), she is forced to wrestle with her biggest hopes and fears about love, death, sex, friendship, and loneliness. In doing so, she discovers that holding the power to determine her own fate requires a resilience and courage that no one talks about, and is more rewarding than anyone imagines. Intimate and timely, No One Tells You This is a fearless reckoning with modern womanhood and an exhilarating adventure that will resonate with anyone determined to live by their own rules. MacNicol is joined by journalist and cultural critic Ann Friedman.

No female child has been born to them for over a hundred years, and the mortal women with whom they mate can only produce male children. But Hexy is different. It's possible that she carries the MacNicol blood and may be the salvation of the selkie. No one will know, however, unless she can survive the snare set for her by an evil finman who has invaded her dreams and holds the souls of many hostage in his underwater cave. Jackson's page-turning paranormal romance will resonate with everyone who has been enchanted by tales of those who change their sea-bound forms to walk among humans.

Ghostbusters II (1989) d. Ivan Reitman Starring:Dan AkroydHarold RamisBill MurrayErnie HudsonSigourney WeaverAnnie PottsRick MoranisPeter MacNicol On this week's episode of TMR, Steve and Ryan watch 1989's not-quite-classic sequel Ghostbusters II. Ryan talks about the time he broke his dad's heart and may have inadvertently killed the family dog, Steve breaks down the way this generation's kids consume content, they speculate on the complicated mythology of Bill Murray, and both wish they could walk around inside Dan Akroyd's weird, crazy noggin'. Ivan Reitman's sequel to the phenomenally successful Ghostbusters is looser and more self-assured than the original. The film opens with a title reading "Five Years Later" and finds the ghostbusters living in hard times. A restraining order has forbidden the boys to partake in paranormal warfare, and as a result they have had to seek other lines of work. Ray (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston (Ernie Hudson) spend their time performing at children's' birthday parties, and Egon (Harold Ramis) is busy conducting experiments investigating the effect of human emotions on the environment, leaving ghostbusting behind. Venkman (Bill Murray) and Dana (Sigourney Weaver) have split up. Venkman now hosts a local cable show called "The World of the Psychic." Dana, now divorced and the mother of a little baby named Oscar, works as an art restorer in a museum -- and this is where the plot kicks in. While Dana is restoring a portrait of a 16th-century tyrant by the name of Vigo the Carpathian, the portrait becomes hexed. The evil Vigo wants to return to life by taking over the body of Dana's little child. Vigo has enlisted Dana's boss, Janosz Poha (Peter MacNicol), to compel Dana to cooperate. Soon dirty sludge and slime flow through the streets of Manhattan, and the ghostbusters have to reunite to save the city from a funky paranormal evil. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi Things discussed in the show: Hail, Caesar! - The Cohen Brothers, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich The Big Labowski, Burn After Reading, O' Brother Where Art Thou, A Serious Man Steven Spielberg Sam Rockwell Ghostbusters (2016) Spy - Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law, Jason Statham Bram Stoker's Dracula Leslie Nielsen - Naked Gun The Rover - Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson Animal Kingdom - Ben Mendelsohn The Revenant The Oscars - Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith Amy, What's Happened, Miss Simone? This time I was joined by Mark MacNicol, a Glaswegian novelist and playwright, who assured me his new novel, Finn McCool Rises, has more than a little to do with the Independence Referendum. We talked about his new book and the mythology behind it.We also got on to how it can be difficult for Scottish writers in the current climate and Mark was happy to give a concrete example.Mark gave his reasons for supporting independence and also talked about some of the benefits he hopes it will bring to the Scottish people.
