Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Kendra Winchester discuss this Booker Prize-longlisted novel. Rose Akroyd performs as Sunday Forrester, an autistic woman navigating a neurotypical world as a single parent. Sunday lives a quiet life in rural England with her daughter. When a middle-aged couple moves into the neighborhood, Sunday and her teenage daughter become smitten with these sophisticated city people who seem to live much more glamorous and full lives. Akroyd captures Sunday's straightforward way of speaking while still imbuing her performance with Sunday's complex emotions, which she expresses differently than neurotypical people. Akroyd's narration creates an intimate and beautiful performance. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Hachette Audio. CHRISTMAS ADJACENT 4: QUADRUPLING DOWN ON OUR LEAST POPULAR SPECIALS!Happy Holidays from all of us at The Good, The Pod, and The Ugly! We bring you three films that reference Christmas a few times but are in no way "Christmas Movies" filled with the spirit of the season and all that shot. Nope. It's "Christmas Adjacent" and, given our downloads for these, no one likes them but us! #1 (LUMP OF COAL): INVASION USA. Conceived by, and starring, Chuck Norris as the only man who can fight off a US invasion completely centered in Florida (take it, please!). This is a nasty, sadistic film that, in 1985, broke with Norris' normally whitebread heroism and suffered a bit initially because of it. It didn't do too much in theaters but, we Americans and our love of being scared by any sort of Other about to take away our liberty knows no bounds and it became one of the best-selling VHS tapes ever as a result. It has a guy who kills dudes by jamming his gun down the front of their pants. A highwater mark for cinema! Ken brought this to the office Christmas party because he is a sadist. #2 (YOU WERE GOOD THIS YEAR!): SNEAKERS (1992). A smart, purely entertaining ensemble techno-heist classic that holds up! Redford, Straitharn, Poitier, Phoenix, Akroyd, Kingsley, McDonnell are all part of one of the best-oiled team movies ever made. It is ridiculous how fun this is. When films like this go off like clockwork it makes you wish all films would spend as much time as this one did in development cracking the plot. Thomas brought this one to the Christmas potluck and is a champ for it. #3 (A FEW LOSING SCRATCH-OFF LOTTERY TICKETS FROM UNCLE PHIL): LONG KISS GOODNIGHT (1996), which breaks our "no Shane Black" rule but that is ok. We did Dial Code Santa last year which pretty much broke our other rules. As the song in I Think You Should Leave says, There's No Rules. Made from a script that someone paid FOUR MILLION DOLLARS for. If you thought a female-centered action movie starring the beautiful Geena Davis (who hadn't and still hasn't ever opened a movie) and Samuel L Jackson directed by a Finnish man who, yeah, directed Cliffhanger, but also Die Hard 2 and The Adventures of Ford Fairlaine, curiously cribbed from Robert Ludlum and cheap paperbacks by a depressed Shane Black, would be a resounding success off a 90 million dollar budget, pack your bags and move to Hollywood! A studio somewhere needs you to fail big with the crap you greenlight and receive a golden parachute when it is sold to Pepsi. Erik brought this one to the community caroling event and makes a few arguments in its favor. Happy Holidays in whichever way you celebrate. And if you don't, they are Christmas adjacent so these are right up your alley because they don't have much to do with Christmas other than what time of year they take place (spoiler: December). If you consider California penal code sections 484207, A597, and 217, theft, kidnapping, cruelty to animals and attempted murder something to laugh about, then you agree that Dragnet is a 1987 crown jewel of comedy. Tom Hanks before TOM HANKS is always a celluloid treasure to behold.P.A.G.A.N. People Against Goodness And Normalcy. Now I'm not saying that I subscribe to this acronym, but I'm not saying I don't either. Dan Akroyd and Tom Hanks team up in this buddy cop comedy. The stacked cast also gifts us with Christopher Plummer's maniacal laugh, as well as Dabney Coleman and his sibilant lisp. As Joe Friday and Pep Streebek, they're hot on the trail of this cult. Securing information on said cult by introducing Emil Muzz's balls to a desk drawer, they end up at a P.A.G.A.N. ceremony saving the virgin Connie Swail (I was waiting for Akroyd to call her an ignorant slut most of this movie). Let's not forget the nail biting battle with an enormous drug laden snake that ensues during the daring rescue. Star Wars anyone? Don't want to give away the BIG climax! That's all you get here.Enid Borden 4-eva.

A hundred years ago, a team of archaeologists in the Valley of the Kings made a remarkable discovery: a near-complete royal burial, an ancient mummy and golden riches beyond imagination. The lost tomb of Tutankhamun ignited a media frenzy, propelled into overdrive by rumours of a deadly ancient curse. But amid the hysteria, many stories—including that of Tutankhamun himself—were distorted or forgotten. Tutankhamun: Pharaoh, Icon, Enigma takes a familiar tale and turns on its head. Leading Egyptologist Joyce Tyldesley has gathered ten unique perspectives together for the first time: that of the teenage pharaoh and his family, ancient embalmers and tomb robbers, famous Western explorers and forgotten Egyptian archaeologists. It's a journey that spans from ancient Thebes in 1336 BCE—when a young king on a mission to restore his land met an unexpected and violent end—to modern Luxor in 1922 CE—as the tomb's discovery led to a fight over ownership that continues to this day. Above all, this is the story of Tutankhamun, as he would have wanted to be remembered. Piecing together three thousand years of evidence and unpicking the misunderstandings that surround Egypt's most famous king, this audiobook offers a vital reappraisal on his life, death and enduring legacy.

“When I came back off my period of time out with burnout I suddenly realized we need a top down disclosure approach to mental health problems. If senior doctors aren't disclosing, if patients get that doctors don't get that then it becomes more stigmatized. If we don't disclose nobody else will disclose. Openness means that somebody else who is struggling may feel like they can talk about their mental health problems too. Autism is not a mental health problem, but may come with mental health problems too,” says Dr. Becky Akroyd. For a period of time starting in the late '70s well up until the '90s, there was a monster on the loose. He wreaked havoc in and around the Santiam pass as he worked for the state transportation department. The very man that was sent out to help you when your car broke down, was the same man who got away with murder for years. The new book in the brilliant Constance Fairchild series, from one of Scotland's foremost crime writers. Suspended from duty after her last case ended in the high-profile arrest of one of Britain's wealthiest men, DC Constance Fairchild is trying to stay away from the limelight. Fate has other ideas . . . Coming home to her London flat, Constance stumbles across a young man, bloodied, mutilated and barely alive. She calls it in and is quickly thrown into the middle of a nationwide investigation . . . It seems that the victim is just the latest in a string of similar ritualistic attacks. No matter that she is off-duty, no matter that there are those in the Met who would gladly see the back of her, Con can't shake her innate determination to bring the monsters responsible for this brutality to justice. Trouble always seems to find her, and even if she has nothing to hide, perhaps she has everything to lose . . .

What do flying saucers, poltergeists, and monster sightings all have in common? ...insert snarky skeptic comment here... O.G. paranormal researcher, John Keel, would argue that they're examples of experiences with 'ultraterrestrials'. And during such events, who's repeatedly lurking in the shadows, driving classic cars and draped in black formal wear?! (..or sometimes denim).. The legendary, and VERY REAL, Men in Black! That’s who! But you already knew that didn’t you ;) Let’s dig into some of the clandestine goings ons of these gothically clad g-men and hear stories that call into question their human origin. ¡Hola Crononautas! Además, suenan los temas Come and get it! de Dan Lebowitz, y Jazz Shuffle Blues de Texasradiofish (todas bajo licencias Cretive Commons 4.0). .

Although Carry Akroyd, who is is President of the John Clare Society, grew up in the countryside, as a child she was never shown or taught anything of the natural world around her. It was not until adulthood that a revelatory moment occurred. Walking one day in Wicken Fen, that she heard an unfamiliar noise above her, which she discovered was the drumming flight of an overhead snipe, a bird whose long bill the peasant poet John Clare described as "...of rude unseemly length" . Carry has chosen 5 episodes from the back catalogue to share with you, which you can hear Monday to Friday and in the Tweet of the Week Omnibus. Producer Andrew Dawes

Calling herself a bird noticer rather than a bird watcher, for painter and print maker Carry Akroyd birds are part of the landscape she connects to for her work. Carry illustrated the Tweet of the Day British Birds book in 2013, where she began noticing birds of a single bold colour; black, white, or even black and white. Carry has chosen 5 episodes from the back catalogue which you can hear Monday to Friday and in the Tweet of the Week Omnibus. Producer Andrew Dawes
This week we are live from Pittsburgh Pod Con reviewing one of the best and often misunderstood films to come from one of the best years in film, 1989. We are of course talking about the 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters 2. A movie that introduced us to the term "Slime Time" and so many Peter MacNicol quotes about Vigo The Carpathian. So hop into our Ecto1 and grab yourself an ectocooler as we ask the question; Is Ghostbusters 2 really that awful? Use the coupon code "psychosnation" and save 25% on our TeePublic Store! Are we alone in the universe? What is the meaning of life? Have aliens visited the Earth, and if so, are they obeying the laws of the United States? Questions such have these have kept our species up at night since the dawn of time.

Dave and John gave themselves a movie so bad that they needed help to figure it out so they invited friend/comedian Chris Clem to help. We watched Celtic Pride, a movie that seems like it was shot in 1985, but really came out closer to the infamous Space Jam. This movie hates basketball, and it probably hates you. But on a fun note it was written by Judd Apatow and Colin Quinn and features baby Jeff Ross. But don't be fooled, these facts do nothing to change the fact that this movie hates you.
Ghostbusters II (1989) d. Ivan Reitman Starring:Dan AkroydHarold RamisBill MurrayErnie HudsonSigourney WeaverAnnie PottsRick MoranisPeter MacNicol On this week's episode of TMR, Steve and Ryan watch 1989's not-quite-classic sequel Ghostbusters II. Ryan talks about the time he broke his dad's heart and may have inadvertently killed the family dog, Steve breaks down the way this generation's kids consume content, they speculate on the complicated mythology of Bill Murray, and both wish they could walk around inside Dan Akroyd's weird, crazy noggin'. Ivan Reitman's sequel to the phenomenally successful Ghostbusters is looser and more self-assured than the original. The film opens with a title reading "Five Years Later" and finds the ghostbusters living in hard times. A restraining order has forbidden the boys to partake in paranormal warfare, and as a result they have had to seek other lines of work. Ray (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston (Ernie Hudson) spend their time performing at children's' birthday parties, and Egon (Harold Ramis) is busy conducting experiments investigating the effect of human emotions on the environment, leaving ghostbusting behind. Venkman (Bill Murray) and Dana (Sigourney Weaver) have split up. Venkman now hosts a local cable show called "The World of the Psychic." Dana, now divorced and the mother of a little baby named Oscar, works as an art restorer in a museum -- and this is where the plot kicks in. While Dana is restoring a portrait of a 16th-century tyrant by the name of Vigo the Carpathian, the portrait becomes hexed. The evil Vigo wants to return to life by taking over the body of Dana's little child. Vigo has enlisted Dana's boss, Janosz Poha (Peter MacNicol), to compel Dana to cooperate. Soon dirty sludge and slime flow through the streets of Manhattan, and the ghostbusters have to reunite to save the city from a funky paranormal evil. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi Things discussed in the show: Hail, Caesar! - The Cohen Brothers, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich The Big Labowski, Burn After Reading, O' Brother Where Art Thou, A Serious Man Steven Spielberg Sam Rockwell Ghostbusters (2016) Spy - Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law, Jason Statham Bram Stoker's Dracula Leslie Nielsen - Naked Gun The Rover - Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson Animal Kingdom - Ben Mendelsohn The Revenant The Oscars - Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith Amy, What's Happened, Miss Simone?
