In the documentary “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!,” Matt Stone and Trey Parker depict themselves as saviors of the Pink Palace, spending unexpected millions to bring Lakewood's beloved eatertainment icon back from bankruptcy. But a few weeks after the documentary's premiere, it's become clear that the South Park creators haven't figured it all out quite yet. Two Casa Bonita performers — WM. Riley Holmes and our regular guest Joshua Emerson — join producer Paul Karolyi today to talk about why they and more than 70 of their colleagues have petitioned to form a union with IATSE and Actors Equity, and discuss Matt and Trey's response. We broke the story of the Casa Bonita performers pushing to unionize in our newsletter Hey Denver last week. Subscribe now and never miss another important update! Our fall campaign is happening now! It's Wednesday, and we're talking about the biggest news of the week. First, no more waiting for that elusive email invite — starting September 16, Casa Bonita will be open to anyone who wants to make a reservation. But old school CB fans are in store for some big changes with even bigger implications for the workers. What does it mean for the longevity of the Pink Palace? Then, the alleged takeover of some poorly managed apartment buildings in Aurora by the Tren de Aragua gang from Venezuela made national news, but there's a lot of confusion over what's really going on. Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi dig into these stories, plus those racist signs that appeared around Denver over the weekend. Bree talked about past guest Alfonso Espino's interviews with renters at one of the buildings allegedly “taken over” by Tren de Aragua and her interview with “professor of fun” David Thomas on what makes Casa Bonita textbook fun. We also talked about an interview Mayor Mike Coffman and Mayor Mike Johnston did with Kyle Clark on 9News. What changed at Queen's Park this summer? A new – and the biggest – provincial cabinet of all time. A new education minister, but only for a few months because he liked the job so much, he quit politics altogether. A new policy on safe injection sites. But what stayed the same? Doug Ford's Conservatives are still the overwhelming first choice among voters. To discuss what's percolating at the Pink Palace, we welcome: Toronto Sun political columnist Brian Lilley; Globe and Mail Queen's Park reporter Laura Stone; The Trillium editor-in-chief Jessica Smith Cross; and Greg Brady, "Toronto Today radio host at 640 Toronto.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

@iLoveWineAndDogs In this conversation, Timothy Coleman, Heidi, and Jessica Seabern discuss various topics including their pets, the challenges of recording a podcast, the upcoming 4th of July holiday, and Jessica's childhood adventures. They also talk about wine and Jessica's dogs and cat. Jessica shares her experiences growing up with pets and her love for adventure. They touch on the importance of spaying and neutering pets and the need for exercise for certain dog breeds. They also discuss the value of experiencing life without relying too much on technology. Jessica and Heidi reminisce about their adventurous travels, including getting chased by bulls and staying at the Pink Palace in Corfu. They discuss the joy of living in the moment and the thrill of not having set plans while traveling. Jessica shares her journey of becoming a flight attendant and later a yoga teacher, and how she found her passion for organizing yoga retreats. They also talk about the importance of being open to experiences and loving both animals and people. Takeaways **Pets can bring joy and companionship to our lives, but it's important to be responsible pet owners by spaying and neutering them. **The 4th of July can be a stressful time for pets due to fireworks, so it's important to keep them in a safe and secure place. **Wine can be a fun and enjoyable way to relax and socialize, but it's important to drink responsibly and choose wines that suit your taste. **Childhood adventures and experiences can shape our outlook on life and instill a sense of independence and resilience. **Technology can be a useful tool, but it's important to balance it with real-life experiences and human connections. Embrace the spontaneity and adventure of travel, and be open to living in the moment. **Follow your passions and find a career that aligns with your interests and values. **Organizing trips and retreats can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience. **Spirit animals can provide guidance and insight into our true selves. **Being kind and loving towards both animals and people can bring happiness and fulfillment. The Denver Art Museum is under scrutiny after the Denver Post reported that members from the vast Indigenous community recently claimed the institution "does not seem they are willing to work with tribes,” in regards to returning stolen artifacts. This isn't the first time the museum has been in hot water for an alleged unwillingness to repatriate artifacts — back in April, Alaskan tribes came to the museum to claim lost relics, but left empty handed. Navajo tribal member and comedian Joshua Emerson is back to chat with host Bree Davies about the complexity behind this repatriation law and what it means when the Native community is treated as a monolith. Plus, Joshua gives some insider insight into “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!”, the new documentary about the making of the Pink Palace 2.0. Joshua mentioned the DAM's Native Arts Artist-In-Residence program and the creation of the Indigenous Community Advisory Council. History Colorado, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the National Parks Service all have additional information on the Native American Graves and Protection and Repatriation Act. Bree mentioned the DAM's instagram post from over the weekend, as well as our conversation with Sam Tabachnik about his investigative reporting on the museum's connections to the illicit antiquities trade in 2022. A nostalgia bomb is about to go off on West Colfax, because the long-awaited return of Casa Bonita is expected any day now. That means Denver's favorite birthday party venue is back, but so are the tax revenues for the City of Lakewood (and likely crowds in a janky strip mall parking lot). While we wait for the Pink Palace to announce a re-opening date, we called up the mayor of Lakewood, Adam Paul, to talk about how much this actually matters for the local economy and culture. Mayor Paul mentioned Lauren Coleman's purchase of the White Swan Motel on West Colfax. With its outrageous audience, pioneering programme, all night film marathons and a particularly vicious house cat, The Scala cinema in London's King's Cross blazed a flamboyant trail across the repertory cinema scene of the 70s, 80s and 90s. As Jane Giles recounts in her book on The Scala, director John Waters describes it as “a country club for criminals and lunatics and people that were high... which is a good way to see movies..." Among that membership were the burgeoning creative filmmakers of the 21st century - Christopher Nolan, Peter Strickland, Joanna Hogg and Ben Wheatley to name a few. Ellen E Jones separates truth from legend with the man who started it all - film producer and director Stephen Woolley. They discuss the infamous screenings, the intersection of music, politics and film, and the ‘collective of lost souls' who came together over a shared love of film. Mark Kermode discusses the age of cinema before video and streaming with film writer and curator Anne Bilson. They remember trekking across London by bus to hunt down one-off screenings, and staying up all night for kung fu specials. Mark then talks to film programmer Andrew Woodyatt about invoking the spirit of The Scala for today's audiences at his weekly Queer Cinema club, the Pink Palace at the Rio Cinema. And in this week's Viewing Note, filmmaker Carol Morley remembers a Scala moment which has haunted her dreams ever since. Producer: Freya Hellier A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

Below is a list of my year's experiences. After the top 10, they're in no particular order. There's also a brief reflection and resources to support us moving into the new year. To compile this information I reviewed my Daybook, monthly dreams, birthday exercise (here's mine from 2021), goodreads app, ballet class platforms, and photos. Needless to say, it's a process! Consider your own 2022 list. Look for patterns, wins, challenges, boundaries, and those sweet moments in between. Although this year may have been challenging, you may just rediscover some gems when you compile your own Year in Review. Oh, and here's an Instagram reel with heaps of photos from 2022. Year's Experiences Top 10 Got a new hip Hosted 30+ Coterie events including an in-person tea party Renovated the Pink Palace (my 600-sqare-foot home) Won 2nd place for Lilac Fairy in the International Adult Ballet Festival's Beginner Solo Category [Instagram reel mentioned in the podcast] Hosted Hip Tranquil Chick's 16th birthday (so. much. fun.) What Worked Well for Me in 2022? Hosting the Coterie, being off Facebook (video with tips forthcoming), trimming my offerings, full therapy practice, a bit of travel, love my office space, charity donations, home renovation, virtual private ballet sessions and group classes, new hip, memoir efforts. What Didn't Work for Me in 2022? Lack of mobility for two months, poor eating habits at times, not enough reading, challenges managing physical pain, not completing online courses, didn't create as much content as I wanted to, didn't complete memoir book proposal. What Did I Learn About Myself Last Year? I can handle a lot of discomfort (hip), I can win an award at a ballet competition, how much I love ballet (and struggle), how grateful I am for my tiny pink home and office, I made many more in person connections. How Did My Goals for 2022 Unfold? I achieved more than half of the Year's Dreams list in my Daybook such as releasing 25 podcasts, getting a new hip, nurturing the Coterie, adding video to my podcast interviews and created more Tea with Kimberly's, streamlining my website (thanks Mara!), setting up solid business bookkeeping, giving a proud performance of Lilac Fairy, remodeling chez moi, and taking trips to Paris. A few that I didn't meet and are still on my radar: read 48 books, complete my memoir proposal, solid pirouettes at the barre and in the center, daily salad, create e-courses. My 2023 Year's Dreams: get memoir proposal to my agent, healthy pugs, host 600th podcast event (save the date: February 20), send two monthly love notes (sign up here), release two monthly podcasts, increase color on my plate and eat more veggies/whole foods (less sugar—my life's struggle), carve out more family time, learn and perform Prelude from Les Sylphides at the International Adult Ballet Festival, celebrate my 50th birthday in a meaningful way, get back onto pointe, nurture my Coterie loves, incorporate more play and relaxation time (ongoing challenge), create a few micro-courses (any requests?), finish a few e-courses I've signed up for, donate to support orangutans, pigs, and pugs, create AM writing time, design spring #balletcore TDJ clothing collection, declutter. A Few of My Favorite Reads: The Idea of You by Robinne Lee, Personality Isn't Permanent by Benjamin Hardy, Free Time by Jenny Blake, Toxic Positivity by Whitney Goodman A Few of My Favorite Shows: White Lotus, Emily in Paris, Fleishman is in Trouble, The Patient A Few of My Favorite Songs: All things Harry Styles especially Falling and Sign of the Times Overall 2022 was a solid year. Ballet continued to be a dominate presence as did my therapy practice, the Coterie, and pug caregiving. I see this continuing into the new year and hope to make more space to write in my journal, create content for you, sip tea with friends, cuddle pugs, and read fireside {or by candlelight}. I'm still finalizing my word/theme for 2023 and feel it bubbling up inside. What about you? May 2023 be filled with time and space for what matters most to you! Russell T. Davies is joined by his friend and author of Love from the Pink Palace, Jill Nalder, to discuss their importance in one another's lives, the role of literature in their lives, and the TV series It's a Sin with New Generation Thinker and psychiatrist Sabina Dosani and chair Matthew Sweet in a conversation recorded in partnership with the Royal Society of Literature at the British Library. Climate Change 1980-2018 Two tigers talking and one is saying, "You can tell humans apart by their fingerprints. They are as unique as our stripes." I've been cleaning up and organizing all of my folders and over the year have saved some screenshots that I label “Ideas”. They are mostly quotes to overlay on beautiful cat images for social sites, so I've created a few, but today had that bizarre stripe / finger print idea come out of nowhere. I sent it to LaWanna to see if Cindy Arthur, or one of our artists could illustrate that. Howie is feeling better and decided he's now ready to remake the cartoon I had done to promote our federal bill to ban cub petting. His edits are great, but now it means pretty much starting from scratch with the cartoonist. I'm going to give it another day or so, because he will want to change things a few times and no sense paying for work that is just going to have to be redone. Jamie and Victor went fossilizing for something new yesterday. It's an old mine where they hit a pocket of fossilized clams. Jamie says the animal part of the clams turns to crystals and that's what she's digging. I have crystals in my pockets and on my desks as a reminder that we are all made of light. I'm continuing to read the NYT piece on climate change. I found this interesting and wondered if Jamie hopped back onto the planet in 1980 to be a part of the change that was needed to save the earth? On April 3, 1980, Senator Paul Tsongas, a Massachusetts Democrat, held the first congressional hearing on carbon-dioxide buildup in the atmosphere. Gordon MacDonald testified that the United States should “take the initiative” and develop, through the United Nations, a way to coordinate every nation's energy policies to address the problem. That June, Jimmy Carter signed the Energy Security Act of 1980, which directed the National Academy of Sciences to start a multiyear, comprehensive study, to be called “Changing Climate,” that would analyze social and economic effects of climate change. More urgent, the National Commission on Air Quality, at the request of Congress, invited two dozen experts, including Henry Shaw himself, to a meeting in Florida to propose climate policy. Two days before Halloween in 1980 Rafe Pomerance traveled to a cotton-candy castle on the Gulf of Mexico, near St. Petersburg, Fla, that locals called the Pink Palace. The Don CeSar hotel was a child's daydream with cantilevered planes of bubble-gum stucco and vanilla-white cupolas that appeared to melt in the sunshine like scoops of ice cream. The hotel stood amid blooms of poisonwood and gumbo limbo on a narrow spit of porous limestone that rose no higher than five feet above the sea. In its carnival of historical amnesia and childlike faith in the power of fantasy, the Pink Palace was a fine setting for the first rehearsal of a conversation that would be earnestly restaged, with little variation and increasing desperation, for the next 40 years. 2015-2018: The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), dealing with greenhouse-gas-emissions mitigation, adaptation, and finance, starting in the year 2020. The agreement's language was negotiated by representatives of 196 state parties at the 21st Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC in Le Bourget, near Paris, France, and adopted by consensus on 12 December 2015. As of November 2018, 195 UNFCCC members have signed the agreement, and 184 have become party to it. The Paris Agreement's long-term goal is to keep the increase in global average temperature to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels; and to limit the increase to 1.5 °C, since this would substantially reduce the risks and effects of climate change. Under the Paris Agreement, each country must determine, plan, and regularly report on the contribution that it undertakes to mitigate global warming. No mechanism forces a country to set a specific target by a specific date, but each target should go beyond previously set targets. In June 2017, U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to withdraw his country from the agreement. Under the agreement, the earliest effective date of withdrawal for the U.S. is November 2020, shortly before the end of President Trump's current term. In practice, changes in United States policy that are contrary to the Paris Agreement have already been put in place. In July 2017 French Environment Minister Nicolas Hulot announced a plan to ban all petrol and diesel vehicles in France by 2040 as part of the Paris Agreement. Hulot also stated that France would no longer use coal to produce electricity after 2022 and that up to 4 billion will be invested in boosting energy efficiency. To reach the agreement's emission targets, Norway will ban the sale of petrol- and diesel-powered cars by 2025; the Netherlands will do the same by 2030. Electric trains running on the Dutch national rail network are already entirely powered by wind energy. The House of Representatives of the Netherlands passed a bill in June 2018 mandating that by 2050 the Netherlands will cut its 1990 greenhouse-gas emissions level by 95%—exceeding the Paris Agreement goals. What will we do?
This week we welcome onto the podcast performer, activist, and author Jill Nalder. In January 2021 Russell T Davies‘ It's a Sin hit our TV screens. For some, it was a reminder of the pain and prejudice of the AIDs crisis, while for many it was an education. Either way, it captured the hearts and minds of millions across the country. Jill Nalder, a lifelong friend of Russell, was the inspiration for the character of Jill Baxter (and even played Jill's mum in the show!). Now she has put her life and experiences into her own words in Love from the Pink Palace. The podcast is produced and presented by Jack Wrighton @jackwrighton and the team at Mostly Books. Memories of love, loss and cabaret through the London AIDS crisis, by It's a Sin's Jill Nalder. When Jill Nalder arrived at drama school in London in the early 1980s, she was ready for her life to begin. With her band of best friends—of which many were talented young gay men with big dreams of their own—she grabbed London by the horns: partying with drag queens at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, hosting cabarets at her glamorous flat, flitting across town to any jobs could get. But soon rumours were spreading from America about a frightening illness being dubbed the 'gay flu', and Jill and her friends—spirited Juan Pablo, Jae with his beautiful voice, upbeat Dursley and many others—found that their formerly carefree existence now under threat. In this moving memoir, It's a Sin's Jill Nalder tells the true story of her life during the AIDS crisis, and that of friends and colleagues, doctors and nurses, activists and fundraisers. She recounts juggling a busy West End career while campaigning for AIDS awareness and research, educating herself and caring for the sick. Most of all, she shines a light on those who were stigmatised and shamed, and remembers those brave and beautiful boys who were lost too soon.

"When I look at the law and also museum policy, it's just so close to conceptual art making. You have a lot of material and you're just trying to define how it lives in the world, except with the law, everybody agrees. With conceptual art, you have to convince people to believe in it." Gala Porras-Kim is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is both conceptually rigorous and visually compelling. Born in Bogotá and based in Los Angeles, Porras-Kim creates art that explores the relationship between historical objects and the institutions that collect and display them. From writing letters questioning how museums handle artifacts to creating sculptures that honor the spiritual lives of antiquities, Porras-Kim's practice is part concept, part material manifestation. The artist's current exhibition, Precipitation for an Arid Landscape, focuses on the Peabody Museum's collection of thousands of artifacts originally found in a giant sinkhole: the Sacred Cenote at Chichén Itzá on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. The exhibition is one in a series of solo shows at the Amant Foundation in Brooklyn, Gasworks in London, and the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis. The work is based partly on research Porras-Kim carried out while she was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard and an artist in residence at the Getty Research Institute. In this episode, Porras-Kim muses about rummaging through museum archives, the rights of mummies, and potlucks in the Pink Palace. Hi guys, Welcome to 2022 and our season 5 for us now!!! We are so excited about this year as we have dedicated to giving you more shows and more amazing cocktails. We will also be including more interviews from bartenders and tiki experts. This episode has tons of information and cool facts but an amazing colorful cocktail that you got try. We will be covering the Royal Hawaiian cocktail and details about the hotel as well in Hawaii. First off, the cocktail is got a Canadian product which is amazing considering this is an international cocktail and so makes me proud to see we are on the international platform on a tiki level. It has a great combination of pineapple juice, orgeat (almond), lime juice and Empress gin (which is a purple colorful floral gin that is not so booze forward). This cocktail definitely tastes tropical and looks colorful as well. Break out your crushed ice bag as you will need it for this cocktail or in Paola's case go to your fridge and grab some crushed ice. Recipe came from Jeff Beachbum Berry “Remixed book and The Royal Hawaiian Cocktail was originally called the Princess Kaiulani in the early 1920's but was renamed in the 1950s. Recipe to this cocktail and many more: https://tikicentralcanada.ca/recipes/ So we go over some cool facts about the hotel itself like that it cost $4 million to build in 1927 (which in today's dollars is $15,325,495) . It was also known as the “Pink Palace of the Pacific” which was a Portuguese influence on its architectural design. It also was the location for the famous Webley Edwards' then-famous radio program Hawaii Calls, featuring the Singing Surfriders and the Waikiki Maidens, and up to 3,000 tourists at a time would pack the courtyard to watch the show. Mark will give us more information on Edwards who was the first report Pearl harbor attack back during WWII which the hotel was home to US navy officers as well. On "Did you Know?" segment: we talk about Captain James Cook who had 3 voyages around the world. On January 18th, 1778, Captain James Cook arrives in Hawaii. He was an explorer that navigated the Pacific Ocean and mapped out New Zealand. He also mapped out Newfoundland which those maps are still used today by naval ships. His first voyage was to help determine the distance from the Earth to the sun during an eclipse of Venus on the sun. Don't ask me how that is done as its all science. I must have missed that class. Anyways, he went on his second voyage and landed in Australia and third was Hawaii. He has come controversial stories behind his death as the tribes killed him on his second trip to Hawaii. Power To Speak with Confidence. Conversations that will inspire and empower.
Wow! What a conversation. I loved listening to musical director, conductor and Westender, Jae Alexander, talking about his amazing career. I don't think there's been a musical either in the West End on or on Broadway in the last 40 years that Jae has not worked on – Cat's, Crazy For You, Follies, Beauty and the Beast, Oliver! SO much to talk about. From humble beginnings in Port Talbot to conducting The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert, he's work with many of the greats of musical theatre from Jerome Robbins to Leonard Bernstein. From Eartha Kitt to Carol Channing. As well as homegrown national treasures, Lulu and Bonnie Langford. We discuss all of the above, of course, but we also discuss his best friend and fellow Westender, Jill Nalder, the subject of the brilliant TV series, It's A Sin. They became flatmates together in the ‘Pink Palace' of the series and still share a house now, 40 years later! The series was written by their long-time friend and fellow Welshman, Russell T Davis. P.S. he also worked with my sister when she was a pink coiffed, Fantasy Banker, in Crazy For You! If you like musical theatre, you won't want to miss this. If you like music, you'll love this. If you're neither – shame on you!

On this episode, Josh talks to It's A Sin star Lydia West AKA the Pink Palace ally, Jill. Lydia talks candily about the mental health impacts of playing Jill in the powerful new Channel 4 and HBO Max drama which follows a group of queer youngsters dealing with the impact of the HIV and AIDs epidemic in 1980s London. Lydia opens up to Josh about the most heartbreaking scenes to film (including one where she had to call her Mum mid take), the backlash against the show's sex scenes and how discrimination has affected her own life. Standing up for others and using your platform - however small or big - is key to making it reign and Lydia's chat is a powerful example of how allyship and true friendship can help others whilst reducing shame and stigma. As Lydia and Jill both show kindness is the greatest currency of all. You can follow Josh on social media across @joshsmithhosts and don't forget to subscribe, follow, rate and comment if you loved the episode as we love to hear from you, queens. Josh will be back to Make it Reign with another Queen next time!

In St. James Court, in the heart of Old Louisville, you will find the Pink Palace. Now, the building wasn't always pink and initially it was where the upper crust of Louisville came to unwind and spend some time with ladies of the night. That would change as the house changed hands and eventually the Woman's Christian Temperance Union took over and painted the building pink. It's believed that the Pink Palace is haunted by the ghost of a former owner who is very protective of his old place. Join us as we take a closer look at the Pink Palace in Louisville. By now you have probably figured out that there are a lot of exciting activities and great museums in Memphis, so lets slow things down a bit and talk about some easy going, relaxing travel activities that are also great with families with young children. If you have young children and are particularly fond of water fowl, head over to the Peabody Hotel to watch the famous duck march. The Legend of the Peabody Memphis Ducks started back in the 1930s, and they still visit the lobby fountain at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day. They hop out of the fountain, walk the red carpet, step into the elevator and ride to the rooftop. The whole procession only takes 20 seconds, but the “duck master” talks for about 20 minutes about the history of the hotel and the ducks. Now you might think this is an odd tourist attraction, and you are right and that is probably why it is so popular. If you have little ones and you need to wear them out for the day, head over to the Memphis Children's Museum. Children will have the opportunity to learn about transportation, camping, art, weather, nutrition and health in a hands-on environment. Exhibits are located both indoors and outdoors, creating year-round fun. Here you can also ride the historic Dentzel Memphis Grand Carousel. The original carousel was constructed in 1909 and has been fully restored. Admission to the museum costs $15 per person and most people spend a great deal of a day here. The next spot we recommend is the Pink Palace. The Pink Palace is unlike what most people think of when it comes to museums. Learn about everything from agriculture, to dinosaurs, to the civil war! The Pink Palace looks back at the history of Memphis from many perspectives. The museum is undergoing renovations and new and improved exhibitions will soon be made available. It is best to check out their website for updates. For those who want a little outdoor activity head over to Mud Island. Located on the Memphis riverfront, Mud Island has various activities to entertain the family. The Riverwalk is an exact scale replica of the Lower Mississippi River. Part splash pad, part history lesson; it provides a unique opportunity to have fun while learning.$4 per person gets you on the monorail which goes across the harbor to the Riverwalk while enjoying spectacular views of Downtown Memphis and the river. Once you’ve walked down the Mississippi you arrive at the ‘Gulf of Mexico’. The ‘Gulf’ is represented a mile acre pond. You can rent paddleboats for $5 per person. If you are still enjoying the sunshine head over to Overton Park where you will find biking trails and picnic areas as well as the Memphis Zoo and the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. You might find a free concert going on at Levitt Shell, the place Elvis was first paid to entertain in 1954. That show is also known as the first ever rock-n-roll concert. Today, Levitt Shell hosts 50 free concerts each year.Another great park to unwind in is Shelby Farms. Not only is it a huge green space, there is horseback riding and one of the coolest playgrounds you will ever see. In fact, it was named one of 16 coolest playgrounds in the whole world. Look for signs pointing you to the Woodland Discovery Playground.Another great experience for children is the Fire Museum of Memphis which showcases and exhibits firefighting trucks and equipment. Also, the Railroad & Trolley Museum located downtown is a popular spot for train enthusiasts. Keep in mind, however, there is some major renovations going on and they expect to be open in the fall of 2018.Now the next place we recommend going to may seem a bit odd but it is a pretty neat attraction.Located inside Memphis Memorial Park Funeral Home & Cemetery, the Crystal Shrine Grotto was designed by Mexican artist Dionicio Rodriquez and has been inspiring visitors since the 1930s.Dionicio dug a cave almost 60 feet into a hill on the grounds of the cemetery and decorated the interior with faux crags made of cement and quartz crystals. Beautiful crystals are exposed to the sunlight on the exterior end to create gorgeous glowing effects. The stonework around the grotto showcases a series of biblical tableaus with two-dimensional figures depicting the life of Jesus Christ. The peaceful scenes are a mixed media of paint and sculpted by a variety of artists. There is a peaceful ambience for those visiting and it’s easy to be in awe of its majestic scenery. On our next episode we'll talk about where to stay and where to eat. In this episode of Memphis Type History: The Podcast, Rebecca meets with Caroline Mitchell Carrico at the Pink Palace to learn the insane story of the man who started Piggly Wiggly and the concept of grocery stores as we know them today. Hear how he lost it all in a gamble and then started the brilliant process back over. Caroline Mitchell Carrico is the Supervisor of Exhibits and Graphic Services at the Memphis Pink Palace Museum. That means she researches and writes for the exhibits at the museum and also has a hand at the designs and installations of the exhibits as well. The massive project they have been working on is a complete redesign of the Pink Palace mansion. She’s been working on it for about 3 years now. You'll hear a little bit about what we can expect to find in the new layout. Clarence Saunders, The Idea Man Caroline gives a bit of Clarence Saunders job history. One of his first jobs was at a country store. You could buy anything you want to there. That’s where his start was and then through a series of job transitions, he landed as a Wholesale Drummer in Memphis. That’s the person who would go to all the different country stores and drum up business. He would convince the store owners to buy things and talk to them about how to improve their sales and improve their products. He developed enough ideas to decide he wanted to start up his own store. Carolynn talks about how he got together with a group of other store owners and started the United Stores company in town, where they did bulk purchasing. And she also talks about how the old country stores ran during this time. The Birth of Piggly Wiggly Clarence decided his store would be a cash-only store, and it would be a self-service grocery store. He set up the store so that you had to walk through the entire store through a serpentine path so you had to walk through every item. At first, people had to rent a shopping basket but then he quickly changed that so you could just borrow the shopping basket at the front and then the only time you interacted with the staff was at the end of the store when you were paying. At the time, a lot of grocery stores let you order your items and they would deliver it to you. But Clarence did away with that. People bought their items and took it home with them. The store we’re talking about is Piggly Wiggly and Clarence Saunders made sure to patent the self service design. He actually got numerous patents, such as the store fixtures. There were arguments that there were already other self service style stores but Clarence was the first person to franchise it and turn it into a really big model that fundamentally changed the way that we shop. Carolyn says Clarence Saunders did his own advertising as well and it was quite the advertisement. Here's an ad she provided for our reading enjoyment. His store also essentially changed advertising for products as well because if people were now passing through goods and deciding which products to buy, businesses would need to make sure their product stood out from the others. So Why the Name Piggly Wiggly? One story is he was on a train and saw a bunch of pigs wiggling to get under a fence. Another story is during time he opened the store there was syndicated stories that ran in the newspaper called Uncle Wiggly’s bedtime tales and people speculate that it may have come from that. It’s also possible that he just completely made up a funny name to be memorable but also possibly so to easily find people who were infringing on his copyright. He sued Hogglety Wogglety stores in Missouri and won because it was similar to his concept and name. But Then He Lost it All Saunders was the President of the corporation and he with the board of directors decided to list Piggly Wiggly stock at the New York Stock Exchange to raise capital. You'll have to listen to the episode to get the 101 on the stock market and how a sneaky plan backfired on Saunders, causing him to lose the company. Did We Mention The Pink Palace Was Intended To Be His Mansion? While the whole stock market incident happened, his mansion was still getting built (The Pink Palace). When he lost everything, the inside of the mansion wasn’t complete and he couldn’t live in it. He declared bankruptcy and lost the mansion and the estate which included Chickasaw Gardens and the Memphis lake. The plans for the Pink Palace was for it to be a millionaires playground. It was going to have a bowling alley, an indoor swimming pool, a Roman atrium, ballroom, a trout stream, a ridiculous amount of bedrooms. And as fascinating as this estate is, history also tells us that he cleared people off of this land so he could have it. Families were living on the property when he purchased it and they were forced to move and their houses were burnt to clear the land. What ended up happening is the Garden Development Corporation from Kentucky purchased the land and mansion at the bankruptcy auction, they subdivided the neighborhood and created Chickasaw Gardens. At the time this was just outside the city. However, they didn’t know what to do with the mansion. They gave the property to the city with the expectation that it would become either a museum or art gallery or art conservancy and they wrote into the contract that it would only be for caucasian race because you know.. this was 1920. At the time there was already the Brooks Art Museum, The James Lee Art Academy was up and strong as an art conservancy, what the city didn’t have was a natural History museum. So they decided to turn the Pink Palace into the city’s Cultural and Natural History Museum. And by the way, make sure to listen to the episode to hear additional fun facts about the mansion, such as how Clarence had a different name for it, its beginning days as a museum, and who the actual first people were to live inside it. Clarence Saunders Stores was the name of his second grocery store. And then he was sued by Piggly Wiggly because they said his name was synonymous with Piggly Wiggly. The corporation lost the lawsuit and Saunders kept the rights to his name. So he named it Clarence Saunders Sole Owner of My Name Stores. Clarence started building a second millionaire's playground further out East. It’s where the Lighterman Nature Center is today. Caroline thinks he called it Woodlawn. The guy was an avid golf player and built another golf course which was the longest golf course in the world at that time. He had built another lake and another house but this time he lost his business to the great depression and sold his estate to Bill Terry, the famous baseball player and manager for the Giants. Things Are Better In Threes Clarence started a third grocery store and named it Keedoozle. It stood for "Key Does it All." The concept was to make it an automated grocery store where you would go in and take your key (the big metal box-like thing) and you would stick it in the drawers of the items you wanted for it to punch your key and then you’d take your key to the check out line where a machine would read your key and a conveyor belt system would bring your items out. The idea was to not have to carry anything until the end. Unfortunately it had lots of problems since it was a bit ahead of its time. For full show notes, visit memphistypehistory.com/saunders

Scratch and Bite Outcast.8. "The Stiffies" a celebration. Howdee Doodee PodCastEars. Welcome to OutCast the born again Podcast. Yaarrgghh, thank bloody dog that’s over… The Space Circus dedication to this podcast…Madmen! And now it’s… It’s male testosterone time. It’s time to get a Stiffie thing happening. This is my tribute to one of the great unheard garage bands that never was. The Stiffies. Australias contribution to “World Peace”. Nah it’s just noise and we love it. I had to bounce back from my Mental Mayhem with something to spark my plug, and this is it. The Stiffies last memorial. That is unless you catch their last shows at The Junkyard in Newcastle 18/12/09 or the Landsdowne in Sydney 19/12/09 with Muzzy Pep. So here we go. The Stiffies www.myspace.com/thestiffies Want you to “Come out and Play”. And of course playing with The Stiffies can lead to blindness or in Jimmy’s case something different happened: “Jimmy’s out to Lunch” Digging deep into Stiffydom you discover a background of vinyl nerds and garage transvestibules. One thing you know is “He’s Waiting”. Let me introduce The Stiffies to you First there is Ryan . six strings and a scream of horror…….injecting with gramophone needles, chewing on vinyl, stuffing tapes and CD’s in all orifices.. Bryn sticks and exposed skins … Bad Boy Basher of every known atom on the planet. Pete . fat arse bottom end bastard … nominal music geek, with a devil gnawing his entrails. And Billy… Honking, screaming, biting, harpmanic sound encylopedia. And they all came together at “The Pink Palace” Of course you wouldn’t take them home to meet your parents because their social graces are limited to who they could “Nail”. But of course it’s all bluff and bluster…tall tales… like those spread by your favourite politicians. They are not “Evil to the Core”. These are the sort of people I spend my time with, the sort of people with values to set this planet straight. Remember If you want to contribute to my potato crazed world the most important thing to remember is. Send your noise images and words to me so I can scare people with your brainwaves Send stuff here scratchandbite@podomatic.com muzz@scratchandbite.com Or visit www.myspace.com/outcastpodcast Next episode will contain a bucket of fish and more noise than you can fit in your wok. Pete has gone to “Heaven” with the “The Wait Ups”, Who are surely having a gentle dig at Ryan’s previous band “The Wake Ups” The Stiffies with replacement Steve on the Bottom End drive will convince you that “You have been Stiffed” Next podcastery will have some nifty Art. Courtesy of SiBoT images this time are “The Stiffies”:
