In the documentary “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!,” Matt Stone and Trey Parker depict themselves as saviors of the Pink Palace, spending unexpected millions to bring Lakewood's beloved eatertainment icon back from bankruptcy. But a few weeks after the documentary's premiere, it's become clear that the South Park creators haven't figured it all out quite yet. Two Casa Bonita performers — WM. Riley Holmes and our regular guest Joshua Emerson — join producer Paul Karolyi today to talk about why they and more than 70 of their colleagues have petitioned to form a union with IATSE and Actors Equity, and discuss Matt and Trey's response. It's Wednesday, and we're talking about the biggest news of the week. First, no more waiting for that elusive email invite — starting September 16, Casa Bonita will be open to anyone who wants to make a reservation. But old school CB fans are in store for some big changes with even bigger implications for the workers. What does it mean for the longevity of the Pink Palace? Then, the alleged takeover of some poorly managed apartment buildings in Aurora by the Tren de Aragua gang from Venezuela made national news, but there's a lot of confusion over what's really going on. Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi dig into these stories, plus those racist signs that appeared around Denver over the weekend. Bree talked about past guest Alfonso Espino's interviews with renters at one of the buildings allegedly “taken over” by Tren de Aragua and her interview with “professor of fun” David Thomas on what makes Casa Bonita textbook fun. We also talked about an interview Mayor Mike Coffman and Mayor Mike Johnston did with Kyle Clark on 9News. What changed at Queen's Park this summer? A new – and the biggest – provincial cabinet of all time. A new education minister, but only for a few months because he liked the job so much, he quit politics altogether. A new policy on safe injection sites. But what stayed the same? Doug Ford's Conservatives are still the overwhelming first choice among voters. To discuss what's percolating at the Pink Palace, we welcome: Toronto Sun political columnist Brian Lilley; Globe and Mail Queen's Park reporter Laura Stone; The Trillium editor-in-chief Jessica Smith Cross; and Greg Brady, "Toronto Today radio host at 640 Toronto.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Denver Art Museum is under scrutiny after the Denver Post reported that members from the vast Indigenous community recently claimed the institution "does not seem they are willing to work with tribes,” in regards to returning stolen artifacts. This isn't the first time the museum has been in hot water for an alleged unwillingness to repatriate artifacts — back in April, Alaskan tribes came to the museum to claim lost relics, but left empty handed. Navajo tribal member and comedian Joshua Emerson is back to chat with host Bree Davies about the complexity behind this repatriation law and what it means when the Native community is treated as a monolith. Plus, Joshua gives some insider insight into “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!”, the new documentary about the making of the Pink Palace 2.0. Joshua mentioned the DAM's Native Arts Artist-In-Residence program and the creation of the Indigenous Community Advisory Council. History Colorado, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the National Parks Service all have additional information on the Native American Graves and Protection and Repatriation Act. Bree mentioned the DAM's instagram post from over the weekend, as well as our conversation with Sam Tabachnik about his investigative reporting on the museum's connections to the illicit antiquities trade in 2022. A nostalgia bomb is about to go off on West Colfax, because the long-awaited return of Casa Bonita is expected any day now. That means Denver's favorite birthday party venue is back, but so are the tax revenues for the City of Lakewood (and likely crowds in a janky strip mall parking lot). While we wait for the Pink Palace to announce a re-opening date, we called up the mayor of Lakewood, Adam Paul, to talk about how much this actually matters for the local economy and culture. Mayor Paul mentioned Lauren Coleman's purchase of the White Swan Motel on West Colfax. With its outrageous audience, pioneering programme, all night film marathons and a particularly vicious house cat, The Scala cinema in London's King's Cross blazed a flamboyant trail across the repertory cinema scene of the 70s, 80s and 90s. As Jane Giles recounts in her book on The Scala, director John Waters describes it as “a country club for criminals and lunatics and people that were high... which is a good way to see movies..." Among that membership were the burgeoning creative filmmakers of the 21st century - Christopher Nolan, Peter Strickland, Joanna Hogg and Ben Wheatley to name a few. Ellen E Jones separates truth from legend with the man who started it all - film producer and director Stephen Woolley. They discuss the infamous screenings, the intersection of music, politics and film, and the ‘collective of lost souls' who came together over a shared love of film. Mark Kermode discusses the age of cinema before video and streaming with film writer and curator Anne Bilson. They remember trekking across London by bus to hunt down one-off screenings, and staying up all night for kung fu specials. Mark then talks to film programmer Andrew Woodyatt about invoking the spirit of The Scala for today's audiences at his weekly Queer Cinema club, the Pink Palace at the Rio Cinema. And in this week's Viewing Note, filmmaker Carol Morley remembers a Scala moment which has haunted her dreams ever since. Producer: Freya Hellier A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

I hope you're finding a gentle landing spot int this new year. Longtime blog readers may recall my “weeks in review” turned “months in review” turned "season in review" over the years. And, of course, there's the annual Year in Review. This reflection exercise allows me to stay accountable, set and review goals, celebrate, and note what needs adjustment. Below is a list of my year's experiences. After the top 10, they're in no particular order. There's also a brief reflection and resources to support us moving into the new year. To compile this information I reviewed my Daybook, monthly dreams, birthday exercise (here's mine from 2021), goodreads app, ballet class platforms, and photos. Needless to say, it's a process! Consider your own 2022 list. Look for patterns, wins, challenges, boundaries, and those sweet moments in between. Although this year may have been challenging, you may just rediscover some gems when you compile your own Year in Review. Oh, and here's an Instagram reel with heaps of photos from 2022. Year's Experiences Top 10 Got a new hip Hosted 30+ Coterie events including an in-person tea party Renovated the Pink Palace (my 600-sqare-foot home) Won 2nd place for Lilac Fairy in the International Adult Ballet Festival's Beginner Solo Category [Instagram reel mentioned in the podcast] Hosted Hip Tranquil Chick's 16th birthday (so. much. fun.) What Worked Well for Me in 2022? Hosting the Coterie, being off Facebook (video with tips forthcoming), trimming my offerings, full therapy practice, a bit of travel, love my office space, charity donations, home renovation, virtual private ballet sessions and group classes, new hip, memoir efforts. What Didn't Work for Me in 2022? Lack of mobility for two months, poor eating habits at times, not enough reading, challenges managing physical pain, not completing online courses, didn't create as much content as I wanted to, didn't complete memoir book proposal. What Did I Learn About Myself Last Year? I can handle a lot of discomfort (hip), I can win an award at a ballet competition, how much I love ballet (and struggle), how grateful I am for my tiny pink home and office, I made many more in person connections. How Did My Goals for 2022 Unfold? I achieved more than half of the Year's Dreams list in my Daybook such as releasing 25 podcasts, getting a new hip, nurturing the Coterie, adding video to my podcast interviews and created more Tea with Kimberly's, streamlining my website (thanks Mara!), setting up solid business bookkeeping, giving a proud performance of Lilac Fairy, remodeling chez moi, and taking trips to Paris. A few that I didn't meet and are still on my radar: read 48 books, complete my memoir proposal, solid pirouettes at the barre and in the center, daily salad, create e-courses. My 2023 Year's Dreams: get memoir proposal to my agent, healthy pugs, host 600th podcast event (save the date: February 20), send two monthly love notes (sign up here), release two monthly podcasts, increase color on my plate and eat more veggies/whole foods (less sugar—my life's struggle), carve out more family time, learn and perform Prelude from Les Sylphides at the International Adult Ballet Festival, celebrate my 50th birthday in a meaningful way, get back onto pointe, nurture my Coterie loves, incorporate more play and relaxation time (ongoing challenge), create a few micro-courses (any requests?), finish a few e-courses I've signed up for, donate to support orangutans, pigs, and pugs, create AM writing time, design spring #balletcore TDJ clothing collection, declutter. A Few of My Favorite Reads: The Idea of You by Robinne Lee, Personality Isn't Permanent by Benjamin Hardy, Free Time by Jenny Blake, Toxic Positivity by Whitney Goodman A Few of My Favorite Shows: White Lotus, Emily in Paris, Fleishman is in Trouble, The Patient A Few of My Favorite Songs: All things Harry Styles especially Falling and Sign of the Times Overall 2022 was a solid year. Ballet continued to be a dominate presence as did my therapy practice, the Coterie, and pug caregiving. I see this continuing into the new year and hope to make more space to write in my journal, create content for you, sip tea with friends, cuddle pugs, and read fireside {or by candlelight}. I'm still finalizing my word/theme for 2023 and feel it bubbling up inside. What about you? May 2023 be filled with time and space for what matters most to you! Russell T. Davies is joined by his friend and author of Love from the Pink Palace, Jill Nalder, to discuss their importance in one another's lives, the role of literature in their lives, and the TV series It's a Sin with New Generation Thinker and psychiatrist Sabina Dosani and chair Matthew Sweet in a conversation recorded in partnership with the Royal Society of Literature at the British Library. Producer: Torquil MacLeod
Climate Change 1980-2018 Two tigers talking and one is saying, "You can tell humans apart by their fingerprints. They are as unique as our stripes." I've been cleaning up and organizing all of my folders and over the year have saved some screenshots that I label “Ideas”. They are mostly quotes to overlay on beautiful cat images for social sites, so I've created a few, but today had that bizarre stripe / finger print idea come out of nowhere. I sent it to LaWanna to see if Cindy Arthur, or one of our artists could illustrate that. Howie is feeling better and decided he's now ready to remake the cartoon I had done to promote our federal bill to ban cub petting. His edits are great, but now it means pretty much starting from scratch with the cartoonist. I'm going to give it another day or so, because he will want to change things a few times and no sense paying for work that is just going to have to be redone. Jamie and Victor went fossilizing for something new yesterday. It's an old mine where they hit a pocket of fossilized clams. Jamie says the animal part of the clams turns to crystals and that's what she's digging. I have crystals in my pockets and on my desks as a reminder that we are all made of light. I'm continuing to read the NYT piece on climate change. I found this interesting and wondered if Jamie hopped back onto the planet in 1980 to be a part of the change that was needed to save the earth? On April 3, 1980, Senator Paul Tsongas, a Massachusetts Democrat, held the first congressional hearing on carbon-dioxide buildup in the atmosphere. Gordon MacDonald testified that the United States should “take the initiative” and develop, through the United Nations, a way to coordinate every nation's energy policies to address the problem. That June, Jimmy Carter signed the Energy Security Act of 1980, which directed the National Academy of Sciences to start a multiyear, comprehensive study, to be called “Changing Climate,” that would analyze social and economic effects of climate change. More urgent, the National Commission on Air Quality, at the request of Congress, invited two dozen experts, including Henry Shaw himself, to a meeting in Florida to propose climate policy. Two days before Halloween in 1980 Rafe Pomerance traveled to a cotton-candy castle on the Gulf of Mexico, near St. Petersburg, Fla, that locals called the Pink Palace. The Don CeSar hotel was a child's daydream with cantilevered planes of bubble-gum stucco and vanilla-white cupolas that appeared to melt in the sunshine like scoops of ice cream. The hotel stood amid blooms of poisonwood and gumbo limbo on a narrow spit of porous limestone that rose no higher than five feet above the sea. In its carnival of historical amnesia and childlike faith in the power of fantasy, the Pink Palace was a fine setting for the first rehearsal of a conversation that would be earnestly restaged, with little variation and increasing desperation, for the next 40 years. 2015-2018: The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), dealing with greenhouse-gas-emissions mitigation, adaptation, and finance, starting in the year 2020. The agreement's language was negotiated by representatives of 196 state parties at the 21st Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC in Le Bourget, near Paris, France, and adopted by consensus on 12 December 2015. As of November 2018, 195 UNFCCC members have signed the agreement, and 184 have become party to it. The Paris Agreement's long-term goal is to keep the increase in global average temperature to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels; and to limit the increase to 1.5 °C, since this would substantially reduce the risks and effects of climate change. Under the Paris Agreement, each country must determine, plan, and regularly report on the contribution that it undertakes to mitigate global warming. No mechanism forces a country to set a specific target by a specific date, but each target should go beyond previously set targets. In June 2017, U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to withdraw his country from the agreement. Under the agreement, the earliest effective date of withdrawal for the U.S. is November 2020, shortly before the end of President Trump's current term. In practice, changes in United States policy that are contrary to the Paris Agreement have already been put in place. In July 2017 French Environment Minister Nicolas Hulot announced a plan to ban all petrol and diesel vehicles in France by 2040 as part of the Paris Agreement. Hulot also stated that France would no longer use coal to produce electricity after 2022 and that up to 4 billion will be invested in boosting energy efficiency. To reach the agreement's emission targets, Norway will ban the sale of petrol- and diesel-powered cars by 2025; the Netherlands will do the same by 2030. Electric trains running on the Dutch national rail network are already entirely powered by wind energy. The House of Representatives of the Netherlands passed a bill in June 2018 mandating that by 2050 the Netherlands will cut its 1990 greenhouse-gas emissions level by 95%—exceeding the Paris Agreement goals. What will we do?
This week we welcome onto the podcast performer, activist, and author Jill Nalder. In January 2021 Russell T Davies‘ It's a Sin hit our TV screens. For some, it was a reminder of the pain and prejudice of the AIDs crisis, while for many it was an education. Either way, it captured the hearts and minds of millions across the country. Jill Nalder, a lifelong friend of Russell, was the inspiration for the character of Jill Baxter (and even played Jill's mum in the show!). Now she has put her life and experiences into her own words in Love from the Pink Palace. The podcast is produced and presented by Jack Wrighton @jackwrighton and the team at Mostly Books. "When I look at the law and also museum policy, it's just so close to conceptual art making. You have a lot of material and you're just trying to define how it lives in the world, except with the law, everybody agrees. With conceptual art, you have to convince people to believe in it." Gala Porras-Kim is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is both conceptually rigorous and visually compelling. Born in Bogotá and based in Los Angeles, Porras-Kim creates art that explores the relationship between historical objects and the institutions that collect and display them. From writing letters questioning how museums handle artifacts to creating sculptures that honor the spiritual lives of antiquities, Porras-Kim's practice is part concept, part material manifestation. The artist's current exhibition, Precipitation for an Arid Landscape, focuses on the Peabody Museum's collection of thousands of artifacts originally found in a giant sinkhole: the Sacred Cenote at Chichén Itzá on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. The exhibition is one in a series of solo shows at the Amant Foundation in Brooklyn, Gasworks in London, and the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis. The work is based partly on research Porras-Kim carried out while she was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard and an artist in residence at the Getty Research Institute. In this episode, Porras-Kim muses about rummaging through museum archives, the rights of mummies, and potlucks in the Pink Palace.
