Gael Dutigny is… the most interesting man in the world. Raised in Paris to a father that was an arms dealer, a mother that always worked two jobs in the fitness world, and a grandfather that was a POW during WWII. If you listen closely you can hear the clear impact of his upbringing. He is incredibly well traveled and has lived in 5 countries and speaks three languages fluently. He also has three masters degrees and is contemplating his next one. Gael has been an accomplished journalist for decades and was embedded in Iraq and Afghanistan with the US Army during wartime. He ran the Honolulu Marathon… IN Iraq. He's run 44 marathons including 8 NYC Marathons and completed 17 Ironmans. He has done MANY ultra distance events including 4 UTMB (Ultra Trail Mont Blanc,) 10 Marathon De Sables (6 days and 155 miles across the Moroccan desert,) 3 Hong Kong 100's, and many more. And yes, he's even surfed Teahupoo with Raimana and golfed with Kelly Slater. With all of this in his back pocket, he is equally gnarly and impressive and interesting. You'll like Gael and his view of the world; as he is not your common guy doing common things. Not even close. On this episode of the podcast i speak to Matt Buck - AKA Running Bucky.Matt has been in the sport of ultra running for many years and has turned his love of trail running, into a profitable business. After a moment of inspiration at Marathon De Sables, he decided that running coaches don't all have to be idiots. He also realised that there are many people out there who want to start trail running, but don't know how to get started.Running Adventures was born out of that idea.We talk about his long standing relationship with Salomon as part of their trail running team and we talk about his other great passion, music.Obviously it wouldn't be an ultra-running Sam podcast if we didn't talk about The Spine Race. So to keep all of the Spine bingo players out there happy, we dived into his DNF at this years race in January and how he feels about it on reflection.Matt is a great guy and has had a lot of success coaching and guiding runners up and down the country. It was a pleasure to speak to him.URS

On today's episode, I am delighted to be speaking to Spencer Matthews, a successful entrepreneur, former Made in Chelsea cast member turned broadcaster and an incredible father of three children. Spencer is well known for his non-alcoholic drinks brand, Clean Co, which was created as a result of his unhealthy relationship with alcohol during his twenties which he saw as ‘an obstacle in his life that had to be removed'. Spencer talks openly about how much his life has changed since he made this decision as it put everything in perspective and allowed him to reassess his priorities. He has since gone on to conquer not only the drinks industry, but a number of extreme challenges including the Marathon De Sables and most recently he ventured to base camp of Mount Everest where he set out to find his oldest brother, Michael, who tragically disappeared while descending the mountain in 1999. I'm intrigued to speak to Spencer today about how he navigated the emotions that surfaced as a result of this recovery operation and how his attitude towards life has drastically changed in the last 10 years.Find Spencer: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/spencermatthews/?hl=enClean Co: https://clean.co/Follow Hurt to Healing on Instagram: @hurttohealingpod--A big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. In this episode, Candace talks with guest Tony about the medical news that he and his partner received, himself requiring an open heart surgery, and his partner getting diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's. He talks about making a counter-intuitive decision that went against what some research would suggest for patients with Early Onset Alzhemizers; instead, they retired, sold their home and became nomads running marathons and half marathons all around the world. Tony talks about what it was like to travel around the world running race after race in places like Madagascar, Bhutan and the Great Wall of China with nothing but a suitcase. The pandemic did not put a stop to their plan and they are still running around the world over 7 years later.Anthony L. Copeland-Parker was a professional pilot/manager for thirty-seven years, the last twenty-seven with United Parcel Service. His last job had him managing pilots and flying B757/767-type air-craft all over the world. When he retired, he began writing his blog, PlayHard-HaveFun.com. Since then, he and his partner Catherine have traveled to eighty-two different countries. They have run at least a half-marathon in thirty-five countries and on all seven continents. His book Running All over the World, adapted from a blog he wrote during their travels, is a nonfiction account of our five-plus years of flying, running, walking, sailing, and sightseeing from Atlanta to Antarctica and back again. Part travelogue and part medical memoir, it transports listeners to exotic places like Madagascar, Bhutan, and the Great Wall of China while at the same time offering a day-to-day look at what it means to have nothing but what's in your suitcase. It's also an offbeat love story, recounting the trials and tribulations of an ex-pilot with a passion for vistas and logistics and a woman so tough she walks a half-marathon in the Australian Outback mere weeks after breaking her ankle. During their years as nomads, they pushed their physical and mental limitations as often as they could - and finished every race hand in hand.Get a copy of Tony's book hereFollow Tony on FacebookFollow Tony on IGFollow Tony on TwitterFind Tony on Linkedin
Chris Moon helps people and organisations around the world grow and improve personal and team performance. He's been a keynote speaker and run change and leadership programs for over twenty years working with the public and private sector and international business schools. He's one of the most fortunate people to be alive you're likely to meet. His exploits have been covered in a Discovery documentary I Shouldn't Be Alive. Chris is a former British Army Officer with three year's operational experience who left to work for a charity clearing landmines. He's survived being taken prisoner in Cambodia by the Khmer Rouge (one of the most brutal terror groups in history) and negotiated his release and that of two colleagues from threatened execution. In 1995 he was blown up in a supposedly safe area of a minefield in remote East Africa losing an arm and a leg (ironically doing one of the least dangerous things he did). He survived initially because he treated himself. About fourteen hours after injury he arrived in South Africa where doctors say they'd never seen anyone live with such a small amount of blood. He recovered four times faster than expected and in 1996; within a year of leaving hospital ran the London Marathon, raised significant sums to help disabled people in the developing world and successfully completed a full time Master's-Degree in human behaviour. Chris taught himself to run and is thought to be the world's first amputee ultra-distance runner after completing the Marathon De Sables in 1997. He's run the world's toughest ultra-marathons and most recently the Badwater Death Valley 135 mile ultra. He's led numerous teams to complete rigorous challenges ranging from climbing mountains to cycling the length of Cambodia. Chris has a passion for the process of achievement and uses his unique experiences to help people do what they do better. He speaks with enthusiasm and humour on resilience, change, personal and strategic leadership and all aspects of behavioural choices. His interactive presentations and workshops are tailored to deliver desired outcomes and actions. #InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEO #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #InclusiveLeadership #Boards See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today I have an inspirational chat with Beck Butler, endurance athlete, adventurer and owner of dedicated trail store, BKT-Trail.Beck's enthusiasm for all things trail - running or hiking - is contagious. She shares some crazy stories of her Marathon de Sables (MDS) experience. In case you have had your head buried in the sand (ha ha) and have not heard of the MDS, it is a multi-stage race through the Sahara desert (250km in 7 days) in the searing heat where you have to carry everything - all your clothes, food, equipment and sleeping gear. What stands out in Beck’s recounting of her ultra endurance stories is not so much the physical pain or her achievements but the friendships forged.A few years ago, Beck left her legal career to set up BKT-Trail. BKT-Trail is more than a retail space, it is an inviting and friendly meeting place for trail enthusiasts. BKT-Trail stocks all the brands Beck loves like Saucony, On Running, Salomon and Ultimate Direction, and specialises in super light weight gear. We shoot the breeze about running shoes and endurance nutrition. As you can tell by the longer than usual episode, I LOVED chatting with Beck!Useful links:BKY-Trail shop and online shop: https://www.bkt-trail.com.auBKT-Trail facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/bkttrail/Marathon de Sables (in case you’re curious): https://www.marathondessables.com/en

Today's guest is Charles Vivian, Managing Director and Portfolio Group Lead at North Highland. Charles leads North Highland's UK and north eastern US practices, a $100 million dollar consulting business. While you might be expecting the typical consulting career journey, Charles has had the complete opposite and has a hugely varied career that has spanned working for a global consultancy, founding his own start up, working for a boutique consulting firm and then working his way up to where he is now. Outside of work Charles has undertaken some phenomenal adventures including climbing Mont Blanc and running the Marathon De Sables, the world's toughest foot race. In fact the reason that there was a slight delay on releasing this episode was that Charles was flying out the day after our interview to trek across the Artic! Charles's approach to growing a business, growing your career and enjoying your life were fascinating and no matter where you are on your journey there'll be something in here for you. We cover so many interesting topics in this conversation including: Charles' start up journey, what he learnt from failing and his advice to other thinking of going out on their own. The importance of culture when it comes to building a consulting firm and how North Highland have created a culture that is open and supportive while welcoming challenge from all levels of the firm. The differences and similarities when it comes to working across the UK and the US and the importance of understanding the culture of the region you're working in when it comes to building a Consulting business. How Charles fits adventures like his trip to the artic in to his schedule and his advice for others looking to balance work with doing more of the things they enjoy outside it. I really enjoyed this conversation with Charles. His unique perspective having worked across such a diverse range of businesses gave some fantastic insights and I know you'll get a lot from this conversation. To sign up for a 250-kilometer foot race through the Sahara Desert without having run more than 10k in your life, and with only 6-months to train, may seem like total insanity to most people but not to Luke Tyburski. Especially not at the time in his life when he decided to take on the toughest foot race on earth known as the Marathon De Sables. What Luke couldn't see at that time was that he was desperate to escape the deep pain within that was left over from unexpectantly leaving a career he dreamed of since the age of four. He did not have the tools at that time to navigate the intensity of his failed expectations and loss of identity. So as most people do who avoid the deep pain of sadness, he ran. And he ran. And he ran. Across the Sahara Desert, down Mount Everest and through the jungle on an island off the coast China. Luke quickly moved on, or so he thought, from his identity as a professional soccer player and into the role of endurance adventurer. From running he added cycling and then swimming. In a matter of a few years, Luke took his adventuring to the extreme level and in 2015, crafted his perfect endurance overdose. The Ultimate Triathlon: Morocco to Monaco in just 12-days included swimming across the Strait of Gibraltar, cycling along the coast of Spain and France and then running into Monaco. The entire event covered over 1200 miles and with his crew of four, Luke made history once again. But it was what occurred following The Ultimate Triathlon that spawned his greatest achievement yet. Luke's recently released book Chasing Extreme is an up close and personal look at the story of a guy who will never give up. His vulnerability is palpable as he gives us a very raw perspective into his struggles, realizations and healing that have taken place over his lifetime. He describes the writing of this book as better than therapy and shares with us just how painful it was to relive the darkest of times in his life. He has since entered the light and he now has clarity on how he wants to live his life. In this episode, he shares guiding principles and sage advice with our listeners. We have been following Luke for a while now and we are incredibly grateful to have connected with him to share this podcast with the YT community. *CONTEST ALERT* Please share this episode on your social channels this week, tag both YogiTriathlete and Luke Tyburski and get yourself in the running to win a signed copy of Chasing Extreme. This book is a must read and we are glad that Luke chose the bravery it took to complete it. Winner announced Friday, February 15, 2019
#Ep15: Happy New Year! In this episode, we are joined by ultra endurance running legend Elisabet Barnes who shares some absolute pearls of advice & inspiration for not only ultra runners but any runner keen to learn about preparing physically and mentally for challenge. Elisabet is best known for being two times female champion of the infamous Marathon Des Sables, and in the 2018 Ultra Mirage El Djerid 100KM in Tunisia she not came first amongst the women but also finished with just three men in front of her. An incredible athlete who we hope inspires you as much as she did us in the interview. Many thanks to those of you who joined us live. My guest this week is one of the most fortunate people you’re likely to meet. He should be dead many times over and his exploits have been covered in a Discovery documentary with the very cheerful title ‘I Shouldn’t Be Alive.’ My guest is Chris Moon. Chris knows exactly what it takes to overcome adversity and supposed limitations. He was blown up in Africa whilst clearing landmines for charity, losing his lower arm and leg. Less than a year after leaving hospital he completed the London Marathon and now runs the world’s toughest ultra-marathons. He’s also one of the few Westerners to have survived being taken prisoner by Khmer Rouge. In this week’s show, we find out why Chris was kidnapped by the Khmer Rouge and how he negotiated his release. How he defied all expectations to run the London Marathon after losing his lower right leg and arm in an explosion clearing land mines and why the biggest limits in life are those, we impose on ourselves often without even realising it. Bio Chris Moon is one of the most fortunate people to be alive you’re likely to meet. He should be dead many times over and his exploits have been covered in a Discovery documentary with the cheerful title I Shouldn’t Be Alive. When it comes to challenging the concept of limitation, adapting to change and overcoming adversity he literally walks the talk. Chris helps people do what they do better. He draws on his unique experiences to illustrate principles people can use in their daily lives. As well as a practical understanding of human performance in the most extreme situations and overcoming adversity, Chris also holds a Master’s Degree in human behaviour and management theory. As a speaker Chris delivers humour, passion and inspiration. Topics include change, motivation, risk and safety, communication, improving sales and personal and strategic leadership. A fantastic story on never giving up no matter what life throws at you, Lauren talks us through how a walk home turned into her worst nightmare as she is knocked down by a drunk driver only to bounce back into a life full of adventure which eventually leads her to The Marathon De Sables a 156 mile Ultra race across the Sahara desert. This is a double feature episode so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did....
Motivational speaker, adventure seeker, and coach who has raced triathlons worldwide. Luke Tyburski has pushed himself to extreme limits, in fact well past where his body could thrive. This interview shows us the limits we can push ourselves to but also shows us the importance of self-care and dealing with the issues that face us that stand in the way of our full potential. Luke is real and honest with us about the demons he faced, and what he had to do in order to heal his body. We discuss how looking at the big picture and that our lives are more than our sport and that balance is important in everything we do is what should drive us. But also that we should not limit ourselves and instead look to what is possible and how we can try to achieve dreams. Today’s Guest Luke Tyburski is an Ultra Runner, Coach, and Motivational Speaker who undertook a 2000KM, 12 day cross-continental Ultimate Triathlon that he designed himself in 2015. Luke is always up for an adventure, and has done things like race down Mt Everest, learned to surf, ran (literally for his life) on an island in the South China Sea after a typhoon, and the Marathon de Sables. Luke grew up in a small Australian town where he dreamed of playing professional football (aka soccer for those of us in the US) and then achieved that dream. Luke hosts the Kinetic Revolution Train Smarter Podcast. What you will learn about: How Luke declared at age 4 that he wanted to be a football player. But how it took him hard work and asking for assistance as he was not naturally a “young phenom” and often never made the team in the early teens. His journey to being a Professional player included moving to the US from Australia and getting his education here, and then on to Belgium and the UK playing professionally. How overtraining and being in a bad relationship added stress to his life and all ended up with him landing in a deep depression and eventual retirement from soccer at age 28. How as athletes we look at and review our training and nutrition but we also need to learn to review our relationships and how it is impacting our lives and what we need to change in ourselves or our relationships that help us reduce the stress in our lives and allow us to be our best. How he registered for the Marathon de Sables (6 marathons in 7 days) right as he retired, while he was still icing a calf injury, 6 months out from the race. So essentially instead of dealing with the big thing that had been taken out of his life, he “ran away, literally” to do a race. How he designed his own triathlon, the Ultimate Triathlon. He blacked out during a segment and woke up in a hotel with no idea how he got there. And then wanted to keep going. Eventually he realized he was addicted to endurance sports and that was his drug of choice. Rather than dealing with his depression and mourning the loss of his life as he had known it. How the Ultimate Triathlon almost broke him because all the overtraining and failure to deal with the depression all wreaked havoc with his body. Even after the event ended he threw himself into promoting the documentary. But he still had to stop everything for months in order to heal himself. And how he learned from the experience. Inspirational Quotes: I thought people who did half marathons were crazy and those who did full marathons were just on a death wish, people who do it are just nuts. And then my friend told me about this race in the Sahara Desert…..Marathon de Sables. I believe there is no one else that is mentally tougher than I am. I believe I am the toughest person in the world. Reflect on what went wrong and what you can do to fix it so you don’t make the same mistake twice. I realized the potential I had as a runner. if I opened my mind to what I was truly capable of, what else could I achieve. This week we're chatting with Brian Keane who's just completed The Marathon De Sables - a multiday ultra-endurance foot race in the Sahara Desert. The 6 day event requires athletes to cover around 254 km with individual stages varying in length with the longest day around 91 km. Aside from the extreme temperatures which can range from ~50°C in the day to ~5°C at night, a further challenge is that competitors are required to be largely self-sufficient and must carry all their own food and equipment for the event. “Your body won't give up unless your mind tells it to” Until he started training for the London Marathon in 2003 Mark had never run more than 3k without stopping. By April 2006 he had completed over 30 Marathons including Athens, Paris, Edinburgh and New York. He also began running ultra-marathons completing 10 in one year finishing with the Marathon De Sables, a 250K self-support run across the Sahara Desert. One month later, Mark climbed Kilimanjaro in Africa, the first of his 7 summits and decided he wanted to climb the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest in Asia, within 5 years. The training took him to Aconcagua, Argentina in 2008 and Denali, Alaska in 2009. After a further years training in the Alps he successfully summited Everest in May 2011. Early in 2012 friends living in the same French village as Mark suggested a ski tour to include Mount Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe. A year to the day on from Everest, Mark and 3 friends stood on the top and he realised he had now climbed 5 of the 7 summits. Mark decided that if he was going to complete them all it must be done straight away. Travelling to West Papua, Indonesia in November 2012 he summited Carstensz and after a 2 week break he was off to the Antarctic to the final mountain, Vinson. Standing on the top of Vinson on the 5th December 2012 Mark joined a very elite group of mountaineers that have successfully summited the 7 summits. The 3rd person in the world to have climbed them all at the first attempt. Mark talks to me about his achievements in running 30 marathons within 3 years, the progression to mountaineering and some of the highlights in his journey up the seven highest summits in the world, and how so much of his success is down to the power of mind over body. What this episode has in store for you “I've always done whatever I wanted to do, which has often got me into a lot more trouble than it needed to! As far as climbing or running is concerned, I didn't start climbing until I was in my late 40s. When I look back at it and why I decided to start, I have realised that it is about obsession – when I get something in my head in terms of doing something, it becomes an obsession. “The buzz of finishing the marathon at 42 years old was really enjoyable, and I thought in my head ‘I can do anything really.' Then someone said to me do you want to do Athens, which is a pretty challenging marathon as 18 miles of it are uphill. I just realised that if you keep yourself in fairly good shape and you're not trying to beat the real elite guys, you can actually get more of a sense of achievement. I never went for best times, it was about trying my hardest and finishing as best I could. The Pennine 100 was also non-stop and brutal, but you just keep going. It's a mind-set. I ran with people who were 5 or 10 times more physically fit than I was, but they didn't finish because their mind wouldn't let them get there. You have to have that positive mind-set and keep it simple. Your body won't give up unless your mind tells it to. You can do anything you want if you put your mind to it – I did 30 marathons in total. None of them are easy, you just keep going until you cross the line.” “The initial obsession with running cumulated in me running the Marathon De Sables (a 250k self-support run across the Sahara Desert). After this run, some mates in the pub then said to me, do you fancy climbing Kilimanjaro? And that was pretty much the start of it! People often ask me how I became so determined, and how do I make sure I achieve the challenges I set for myself – a lot of people assume it is a fear of failure. However, I don't think it is – I actually think it is a love of success. I love being successful, not just in the mountains, but also in business. I love the buzz of running a successful business. I think I am quite lucky that the m
