Sometimes, a gravel champion of multiple nations simply finds himself without a floor pump. A few weeks ago, Benjamin Perry was in need of such a tool at Unbound Gravel, the premier gravel race on the calendar. Perry, who's based in Gerona, wasn't able to pack a pump for his North American trip. “Then, I was going around the hotel waiting for somebody to come out of a room who looked like a cyclist,” he said. “In Emporia around Unbound week, it's pretty easy to find somebody who has a floor pump, so it's not the end of the world.” Still, having to search for a pump to set his tires for a big event is quite the contrast to his days as a professional road racer, when his teams would take care of all the logistics and maintenance. Elite gravel—it requires a lot of hustle. For the past three seasons, Perry has been making his way as a privateer racing on mixed surfaces. He's had successes, including his 2025 Canadian gravel championship title. (He's set to defend in a few days. He faces serious competition.) This year, he competed in the Catalan championships, and won, putting him in the strange situation of being a non-Catalan with that community's champion's jersey. He's also had multiple top-10 finishes at major races this season. Yet sometimes, Perry has to scramble for parts. This episode of the Canadian Cycling Magazine Podcast features a deep dive into the world of elite gravel racing with Benjamin Perry. It's a lively chat as Perry brings his trademark humour to the topics of racing, equipment and fuelling. The pro also has top tips for anyone interested in racing the world's toughest gravel events.
This week on the show we have a special two-part episode with professional cyclist Maddy Nutt. We first hear from Maddy live from Emporia in the days leading into her Unbound XL race. Maddy talks about her win at the Traka 560, and why she was drawn to gravel to begin with. She also goes through a few pre-race details for Unbound, including her bike setup and the recipe for her favorite race day breakfast. Kathryn then catches up with Maddy after she is back home in London following her second place finish at the Unbound XL. Maddy goes over some of the highlights, and lowlights, of her race including dodging lightning strikes and hiking through mud. Listen in to find out if Maddy actually had fun during the Unbound XL, and if she will go for the cast iron frying pan.Follow Maddy on Instagram @maddynutty and check out her YouTube channel @maddynuttRegister for Feisty Fest at https://feisty.co/events/Follow us on Instagram:@feistycycling@feisty_mediaGirls Gone Gravel Website:https://www.girlsgonegravel.com/Support our Partners:SILCA: Use the code FeistyUnbound2026 for 15% off at https://silca.cc/en-ca Wahoo: Learn about the ELEMNT ROAM 3 at https://bit.ly/4tk2j23Momentous: Use code GIRLSGONEGRAVEL for up to 35% off your first order at livemomentous.comTifosi: Use the code FEISTY2026 for 20% off at tifosioptics.comRegister for Feisty Fest at https://feisty.co/events/

Mike Levy, Lisa Charleboise, and Logan Jones-Wilkins hold down the fort talking about pee, ultra-racing, and Strava feuds. First, Levy tries to pry embargoed information out of Jones-Wilkins before Charleboise recaps another massive weekend ride. From there, it's on to the main topics: Urine Intel from the Giro d'Italia The trio tackles the recent UCI warnings at the Giro d'Italia. Racers have been put on notice for urinating into their water bottles and tossing them to the roadside. Levy attempts to defend the logistical efficiency of the "bottle pee," while Logan and Lisa outline the absolute horror for roadside fans hoping to snag a souvenir bidon. Strava Feuds and Indoor Aerobars Addressing reader questions, the team discusses the mental health aspects of chasing Strava KOMs in highly saturated areas. Logan shares his philosophy on defending niche segments against World Tour riders, and Levy confesses to running a high aerobar setup on his indoor Zwift bike strictly for comfort during three-hour sessions. The Traka 560 Controversy & Ultra-Racing Ethics The crew dives deep into the messy world of ultra-distance racing. Logan breaks down why Victor Bosoni's victory at the Traka 560km Adventure event sparked intense debate after he cut approximately 400 meters off the official GPS track. This leads to a fiery debate: Lisa firmly believes missing that much of the course is grounds for immediate disqualification, while Levy and Logan argue for a bit more nuance in self-supported "adventure" events. This week, James and Will are joined by ex-road pro turned gravel ace, Rob Britton. Born in Saskatchewan in Canada in 1984, Rob turned pro in 2010 with American team Bissell Pro Cycling and for the next 12 seasons raced at Continental level, arguably enjoying his best years with Rally Cycling (not that Raleigh, although he did race for that Raleigh in 2013), where he won the Tour of Utah, his second Tour of Gila in New Mexico and the Canadian National Time-Trial title. Given such strong showings in such hot, long and multi-day races, Rob was a safe bet when he – like lots of his road colleagues – moved into gravel. At first riding as a privateer – sponsored with a bit of kit but essentially riding team-less – Rob finished 6th in his first big gravel race, Unbound, in 2022, then the following year won Badlands – all 800km and 16,000 vertical metres of it. 2023 saw an incredible result at Traka, where he finished second behind fellow ex-road pro Pete Stetina, however arguably his best result so far came when the then 40-year-old beat Lachlan Morton at Unbound XL, finishing the 578km course at an astonishing average speed of 32.4kmh, smashing the course record by 12 minutes in the process.Such rides have seen Rob become part of the OVRLND adventure team, with backing from Easton Cycling, Castelli and Factor bikes, who's radical aero suspension gravel bike, the Sarana, Rob rode at this year's Traka 560.Whatever bike Rob rides he manages to make gruelling long-distance look easy, but as we chat about in this episode, his journey in cycling has been anything but, fraught with the difficulties of racing for smaller teams, the US's ever dwindling race calendar, and having to reinvent himself as a gravel racer, from canvassing for sponsors to looking after his own bikes. We caught up with Rob in Italy ahead of racing at The Hills Gravel Race in Treviso in March.Chat begins at 6.54-----------------This episode is brought to you by the Hammerhead Karoo GPS bike computer. Can you train mental durability? “Yes, 100 per cent,” says Haley Smith. The rider knows her stuff. She's an Olympian who competed in cross country mountain biking. She's a Commonwealth Games medallist and a two-time national marathon mountain bike champion. Smith won the first Life Time Grand Prix series. Recently, she was fifth at the Traka 360 gravel race in Spain. While Smith is a top-level rider, she's also a PhD student in sports psychology. In her studies, cycling is front and centre. One of her papers even examined the spirit of gravel. In the interview, Smith discusses racing, her academic work, as well as mental strategies that can help you to be a better rider. This season, Smith is on tour. Not a multi-stage event in this case, but a speaking tour that also includes group rides. It's all part of her Competere project. Competere is aimed at helping more girls and women grow into passionate cyclists. Here's the schedule: May 14-15: Le Club, Montreal, chat and ride on the 15th May 21: Toronto, Etape 22, chat only June 18: Vancouver, Bici, chat only July 2-3: Cyclesmith, Halifax, chat and ride on the 3rd Oct. 17: Big Sugar Gravel, chat

Maddy Nutt just made her mark on ultra-cycling in her very first attempt at this year's Traka 560. She is no stranger to big efforts on the bike — or The Traka itself. Over the previous three years she competed in the 360km event, notably finishing 7th last year despite tearing her AC ligament only 100km into the race. She's also raced some of the biggest gravel events in the world including Unbound Gravel, Migration Gravel Race, and The Rift (among others). Coming into this year's Traka, Maddy believed the previous women's record of 28h 52m was within reach, but respected the field enough to know that anything could happen. She wasn't listed as one of the favorites, she shares in today's episode, and maybe that helped take some of the pressure off. In the midst of the many conversations surrounding this year's Traka, Maddy's story stood out as something worth celebrating. Her ride was thoughtful, calculated, and deeply intentional. She visited Girona multiple times to prepare, pre-rode sections of the course, and even used Google Street View to scout water fountains and resupply locations. She left no stone unturned in her preparation. At the Traka 560, Maddy rode through the night for the first time. She rode farther than she ever had before. And in doing so, she rode herself not only into victory, but into an entirely new realm of possibility. She can now officially add "ultra-cyclist" to her already impressive list of accomplishments. Congrats Maddy…welcome to the club. Can't wait to see what comes next. Presented by www.OldManMountain.com Support at www.patreon.com/bikesordeath.com Ride your dam bike www.texasshowdownseries.com
This week's episode is all about riding long. Factor's new Sarana ultra-distance race bike made its first appearance at last weekend's Traka gravel race in Girona, Spain, and Velo tech editor Logan Jones-Wilkins answers Levy's questions about how it aims to combine speedy handling and all-day comfort. Its geometry leans more towards speed and agility than outright stability, but it also has room for 2.2" tires and a carbon frame designed for vertical compliance and integrated frame bags, making the Sarana a novel endurance racing option, but did Factor go far enough? And speaking of all-day (and all-night) adventures, Lisa recounts her recent 600km / 373 mile ride at the Mendocino 600 that saw her on the move for over 20 hours while bagging 5,128 meters (16,824-feet) of climbing. Logan and Levy ask her about the pre-ride planning that goes into an effort like this, how she fueled herself while on the bike, and why she rode a steel frame equipped with some ultra-light carbon wheels and components. They also get into using a power meter to limit yourself, how being a trash panda is a superpower during ultra-distance events, and the deeper meaning of being on your bike for such a long time. Also, more reader questions answered about 32" wheels and bikes not being too expensive. The Traka is a 3 day gravel event that takes place in one of the meccas of riding in Spain: Girona. This year's race marked Angela's return to gravel racing after an almost 2 year hiatus. With over 2600 meters of climbing in 200km, this race reminded Angela that gravel racing is so different than Ironman racing. In fact, she may (or may not) have called Ironman racing "soft" in this podcast. This race recap includes crying on the side of the road, last minute tire switching, running out of fuel, and a whole lot of riding alone for 8 hours. Have a listen!

It's Tuesday, May 5, 2026. I just got back from Girona after finishing the Traka 100, the biggest gravel bike race in Europe. When I signed up months ago, 100 kilometers (60 miles) felt like an impossible stretch for a "sprinter" like me. Today, I'm breaking down the raw experience of the race, how I shaved nearly an hour off my practice time in just one week, and why you should sign up for that "scary" challenge—even if you aren't sure you can finish.I hope you enjoy it! As always you can learn more and connect with me on my website (andystorch.com) or LinkedIn. And you can find my books - Own Your Career Own Your Life and Own Your Brand, Own Your Career - on Amazon.

Full-time school teacher by day, ultra gravel powerhouse by night — Svenja Betz is redefining what's possible in endurance sport. She didn't just take on the biggest races in ultra gravel — she won them all. First Unbound XL, then The Traka Adventure, and Badlands. Her rise has been anything but conventional. She doesn't train full-time. She doesn't follow the typical pro playbook. And she doesn't sleep during races. Instead, she relies on instinct, resilience, and a deep love for the process. In this conversation, we dive into what really matters when the distances get serious: how to fuel properly without falling into energy deficits, how to pace when sleep isn't an option, and how to stay mentally strong when everything starts to fall apart.Svenja also opens up about balancing elite performance with a demanding career, navigating the pressure of social media, and why being “skinny” isn't the key to going faster. If you're curious about ultra cycling or wondering how far you could really go, this episode might just challenge your assumptions and inspire you to push your own limits.– IMPORTANT LINKS –Follow Svenja Betz: https://www.instagram.com/svenja__betz/Castelli SOG: https://www.instagram.com/castelli_sog/– CHAPTERS –00:00 – Intro02:18 – Balancing teaching + ultra racing05:25 – Training with limited time09:41 – 52 hours, zero sleep13:45 – Intervals vs endurance18:36 – Nutrition, RED-S & weight myths22:51 – Fueling strategy in ultras25:31 – Heat, hydration & survival32:12 – Are you ready for 500km+?40:14 – Mental toughness & self-talk43:05 – Winning move at Badlands47:34 – Social media vs reality54:47 – Castelli kit, mindset & identity59:33 – What's next: new goals– HOST –Søren Jensen, Global Marketing Manager at Castelli, has worked for this iconic brand since 2006. "Traka grāmata trakai pasaulei", tā teica tulkotāja no igauņu valodas Daila Ozola. Armina Koemegi romānu "Debesis" no igauņu valodas tulkojusi Daila Ozola, izdevis "Aminori". Mads Würtz Schmidt might be a newcomer to gravel, but he's already established himself as one of the best in the world. The 31-year-old Danish rider went all in on the sport last year with little financial support and ended up winning the Traka, becoming the European Gravel Champion, and snagging fourth at Unbound. This year, he'll be racing alongside Keegan Swenson and Matt Beers as part of the new Specialized off-road team. Mads joined Payson in Girona to talk about his reluctant departure from the WorldTour, how becoming a dad has changed everything, and why he prefers doing heat training to altitude training. They also talk about his dominance as a junior and U23 rider, the low point in 2022 when he thought about quitting cycling altogether, and how he thinks the introduction of teams into gravel (including Specialized Off-road) will change the sport. New Tech Alert: A speedy all-road bike with all the tire clearance, an unreleased (and still embargoed) gravel bike, and a clever gravel suspension fork from DT Swiss make this a gear-focused show. Senior Tech Editor Alvin Holbrook chats with Levy about riding Cannondale's completely redesigned Synapse that offers massive tire clearance, a best-in-class storage box, and integrated lighting that (might) finally make sense. Further, he explains how one battery powers all of it and the AXS derailleur. The price? $16,499. He's also spent some time on a new gravel suspension fork from DT Swiss that features integrated brake hose routing and aero-ish shaping, and even got to use one while racing a very wet Traka 100 in Spain just a few days ago.
