From Combat to Clarity: The Healing Journey of Mark Keller This week's Team Never Quit episode features Lieutenant Commander Mark Keller, a retired U.S. Navy Naval Flight Officer who served his country with distinction in combat zones around the world—including Kosovo, Iraq, and post-9/11 Afghanistan. But after two decades of intense operational service, Mark faced a more insidious enemy at home: the devastating mental, emotional, and physical toll of war. In this powerful conversation, Mark opens up about his early years as a thrill-seeker, his journey from the Air Force to earning his commission into the Navy, and the harrowing missions that left scars no one could see. He recounts the mission that haunted him most—the unintended loss of innocent life—and how that moment triggered a years-long battle with PTSD, addiction, broken relationships, and near-death experiences. But Mark's story doesn't end in darkness. He takes us inside his transformational healing journey, made possible by plant-based neurogenesis therapies including Ibogaine and 5-MEO-DMT. Supported by the nonprofit Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions (VETS) and inspired by fellow veterans like Marcus Luttrell and Marcus Capone, Mark discovered not only deep healing—but a new purpose. Now an advocate for alternative PTSD treatments and featured in the upcoming documentary No Fallen Heroes, Mark shares how love, neuroplasticity, and hard-fought self-discovery helped him reclaim his life.  If you or someone you love is a veteran struggling with PTSD, you're not alone. Reach out, share this episode, and explore the healing resources shared today. In This Episode You Will Hear: • When you've got 2 Lieutenants with 15,000 pounds of gas and an hour to kill in an F-14, what are you gonna do? (18:46) • If there's any flat earthers listening to this… the earth is round. (19:28) • As I look over on my left, I start seeing bright orange, all over the place. And I switched around on my seat, and the whole back of the plane's on fire. Holy shit! (25:30) • A lot of guys got in the habit of making sure they had a mag in there. They wanted to be sure to take themselves out, before the Taliban got ‘em. (36:22) • [Marcus: a buddy of mine] came over the wood line and dropped down over our crawfish boil, you could see him come down; rolled over to do a panel check; and hung us the finger. (43:53) • Why are you gonna strap an explosive-laden rocket to your ass, if you can't do something fun with it? (44:44) • Detailed discussion related to lasers and precision bombing. (48:27 to 55:30) • People have different experiences, and you make decisions based on what you know. (59:21) • I got home to my wife and my 2 young sons, and I wasn't the same. (75:35) • Every time you launch, you gotta be on the ball. You're at 100% all the time. You have to. Mission success, and sometimes survival requires it. (77:19) • The life of a fighter air crew in the Navy: Poor quality sleep, not the best nutrition, constant high stress for months at a time, bathing in and drinking water contaminated with jet fuel, the G-forces associated with catapult shots and arrested landings deform your brain rather violently, you're flying with a 10,000 watt radar down by your feet, when you're at altitude, there's nothing between you and God but a piece of plexiglass. Why are guys getting prostate cancer? I don't know. We can guess about that, can't we? (78:09) • There were times that I was so screwed up that I knew that next one was gonna kill me and I said I don't care and I did it anyway. I don't know why I'm not dead. (95:47) • Ibogaine doesn't give you what you want, it gives you what you need. (124:45) • Ibogaine is a medicine that works on cellular metabolism and neuro transmitters and happens to have some psychedelic-like effects. (128:45) • I've just learned to not be too attached to what other people think. (164:42)

Welcome back to The Trip Report Podcast, a production of Beckley Waves, a Psychedelic Venture Studio.Today, I am speaking with Marcus Capone, co-founder of Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions (VETS), a non-profit that seeks to create access to psychedelic medicine for veterans of the Armed Forces. He is also co-founder and CEO of Tara Mind, a public benefit corporation that is making psychedelic medicine a widely available employee benefit.Whenever you hear about federal programs, senate bills, or congressional initiatives for psychedelics, two things usually stand out: first, they are often bipartisan efforts—a rarity in the current political environment—and second, they seek to fund research or access for veterans. In my experience, the Veterans-as-champions-of-psychedelic-medicine narrative catches a lot of people by surprise when they first hear about it, but quickly connect the dots as they recollect the staggering numbers of veteran suicides that periodically make the news.As Marcus and I discuss, having veterans as proponents of Psychedelic Medicine is one of the biggest levers changing the public perception of these compounds. Unfortunately, access through the Veterans Health Administration is not possible due to their illegal status, and so many vets seeking treatment have to leave the country they fought for to access the medicine that they need. This is where VETS and other veteran-focused non-profits come in.In this conversation, Marcus and I discuss:* His military career and the difficulty of his post-deployment return to civilian life* The origin story of Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions * The persistent stigma of psychedelics in the military community* The power of Ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT* The challenge of Non-profit work* Tara Mind and the future of integrating Psychedelics into healthcareAnd now, I bring you my conversation with Marcus Capone.Listen to the episode on Substack, Spotify, Google or Apple.Credits:* Hosted by Zach Haigney * Produced by Zach Haigney, Erin Greenhouse, and Katelin Jabbari* Find us at thetripreport.com* Follow us on Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube* Theme music by MANCHO Sounds, Mixed and Mastered by Rollin Weary This is a public episode. Amber and Marcus Capone are founders of VETS solutions, a pioneering organization dedicated to supporting veterans struggling with the invisible wounds of war. Amber and Marcus's journey began with the often difficult reality of life after Marcus's retirement from the U.S. Navy SEALs, where Amber witnessed the devastating toll that Marcus's service had taken on him, as he battled depression, anger, addiction, and an array of mental health challenges. But when all hope seemed lost, a glimmer of possibility emerged—a potential solution that lay beyond the traditional bounds of medicine and therapy. In their quest for healing, Marcus's fellow Navy SEAL friend introduced them to Ibogaine, a psychedelic drug known for its ability to unlock deep-seated traumas and offer profound insights. While he was initially skeptical, Marcus embarked on this intense psychedelic experience, and what would become a life-altering journey, one where both Amber and Marcus would find a way forward, towards renewed clarity and purpose. We're just lucky we found out about him early on, because he will definitely be a household name soon enough. Without spoiling too much of the story, which he tells eloquently, he was an F/A-18E Super Hornet pilot who experienced an extremely traumatic ejection, fought his way through the physical rehab, but was then laid low again by delayed onset mental health and TBI issues. Our medical system successfully brought Kegan back from the brink of death, but when it came time to get him back to actual health it failed completely. What you'll hear in this conversation are all the ways he took ownership of his recovery journey. We certainly brought Kegan on to tell his story, but he's told his story several times before. What we tried to draw out in this conversation were some key insights about the power of simple lifestyle behaviors to have profound health, fitness, and wellness benefits even in extreme situations. You can find a full written version of Kegan's story here and Kegan specifically mention's the support he received from Jesse Gould and Heroic Hearts Project so check out their page while you're there. Kegan mentions a documentary video about another high speed crash, you can find Brian Udell's (call sign Noodle) story on YouTube here. "Next-Generation Treatment Options for Combat PTSD," with Amber and Marcus Capone of SEAL Team SIX. When he was medically retired after 13 years. and multiple combat deployments as a U.S. Navy SEAL, Marcus Capone and his wife, Amber, thought that life would return to normal. Instead, their struggle had just begun. Marcus was experiencing an escalating myriad of challenges, including depression, isolation, cognitive impairment, excessive alcohol use, headaches, insomnia, and impulsivity. Marcus was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but, instinctively, Amber felt there was more to be discovered. After learning about the effects of blast waves, concussive, and sub concussive brain injuries, everything started to become clear. Marcus' military career as an explosives expert, combined with his prior years of contact sports, had left him with the invisible wounds of traumatic brain injury (TBI), a condition that has significant overlap with PTSD, and is often not properly diagnosed. 1:11 Another friend of mine who told me he was taking the cocktail, and the VA gives you this massive or the or the military gives you a massive cocktail of antidepressants or stimulants or whatever the the pattern may be of medications and medications alone are often not the solution, often not the solution to PTSD or whatever. There's a mental illness involved. 3:02 After multiple combat deployments, Marcus and Emerson realized that the subsequent years would be wrought with escalating hardships misdiagnosis, a broken veteran healthcare system and desperation to find a meaningful solution before it was too late. 13:20 Helping guys get access to different type of treatment modalities that are really helping full like mind, body and soul. 24:16 But right now, today, if you don't do the proper integration, excuse me preparation before these psychedelic journeys, and then the proper integration afterwards, you know, you can you're it's it could be a recipe for disaster, you want to do these, you know, you want to go into these experiences with all the tools and all the information you need. 29:11 Many of these deep psychedelic journeys, by the way that are not fun, that are like a lot of work and you're, you know, you're in a bed, or resting in some type of palette, because you're, you're on, you're on a heavy, heavy dose of these medicines. When you're on these medicines, they tap into your subconscious and they reach down and they make you deal with some of those traumas that potentially can be causing you to have that addiction. 33:52 I think it's so important to you know, like, we're from a community of very good soldiers, but also very unconventional thinking individuals. And so I think that that goes for both the guys and the spouses is very much the case. 42:43 That's perfect vet solutions.org I want to point everybody to that. After learning about the effects of blast waves, concussive, and subconcussive brain injuries, everything started to become clear. Marcus' military career as an explosives expert, combined with his prior years of contact sports, had left him with the invisible wounds of traumatic brain injury (TBI), a condition that has significant overlap with PTSD, and is often not properly diagnosed. When all hope seemed lost, Amber learned about ibogaine, a plant-based psychedelic used traditionally in West African ceremonial settings that has been studied as a potential treatment for opioid addiction and other mental health conditions. Marcus traveled to a reputable independent clinic outside of the U.S. to receive treatment with Ibogaine, as well as 5-MeO-DMT, another naturally occurring psychedelic compound. Immediately after the sessions, Marcus felt a massive weight had been lifted, his cognitive functioning returned, he had no desire for alcohol, and he stopped taking all prescription medications. Since 2019, the non-profit Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions (VETS) has provided grants for hundreds of U.S. Special Forces veterans to receive psychedelic-assisted therapy treatment outside the U.S., as well as preparation and integration coaching. VETS believes that psychedelic therapy can lay the foundation for further healing. This “foundational healing” enables continued progress across a range of therapeutic modalities, and is supported by a robust coaching program, providing a holistic treatment solution for veterans. https://betterhelp.com/clearedhot https://athleticgreens.com/clearedhot https://paintyourlife.com https://letsdisco.com

When I read about the “Veteran Navy SEAL Advocates for Psychedelic Assisted Therapy” called Marcus Capone, I was wondering, what was this all about? A Navy Seal and psychedelics? I kept reading and quickly Amber Capone, Marcus' wife, was introduced in the articles, Amber wanted to save her husband from PTSD and, yes, suicide. And make it possible for war veterans to get in touch with psychedelic-assisted therapy by founding the organization Vet Solutions. Amber's and Marcus' mission today is to end the veteran suicide epidemic by providing resources, research, and advocacy for U.S. military veterans seeking psychedelic-assisted therapies. Vet Solutions helps veterans and their spouses to access treatment with psychedelic therapies including iboga/ibogaine, ketamine, psilocybin, MDMA, 5-MeO-DMT, and ayahuasca. So far in the US. But their model can work on a global level. The story of Marcus and Amber is a pretty strong one. When Marcus was medically retired after 13 years and multiple combat deployments as a U.S. Navy SEAL, Marcus and Amber thought that life would return to normal. Instead, their struggle had just begun. Marcus was experiencing an escalating myriad of challenges, including depression, isolation, cognitive impairment, excessive alcohol use, headaches, insomnia, and impulsivity. Marcus' military career as an explosives expert, combined with his prior years of contact sports, had left him with the invisible wounds of traumatic brain injury (TBI), a condition that has significant overlap with PTSD and is often not properly diagnosed. So here they are, on the podcast, talking about their journey. https://vetsolutions.org/

Here's a real couple with a real family – and real personal issues - that have overcome with the help of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy alternatives. Marcus and Amber Capone share their struggles and successes, bringing hope and restoration to others with seemingly impossible mental struggles. Their non-profit organization – VETS – provides the resources, research, and advocacy to improve the quality of life for U.S. Special Operations Combat Veterans seeking unconventional therapy alternatives.   In this episode you will hear:   Thank goodness we didn't have internet in college. You can't get away with anything. We really can't take credit for the work we're doing [helping other combat vets]; it seems like it's just happening. It's meant to be. We're just vessels helping it [our non-profit] come to life. It's been an honor & a privilege to pay this forward. Marcus [Capone] watched GI Jane and decided to become a Navy SEAL. Amber: My dad is a big part of how resilient I've been. Marcus Capone to Marcus Luttrell: I was the first person you saw [in Germany after your Operation Red Wing injuries].    A surprised Marcus Luttrell: “THAT WAS YOU???!!!”   We were deployed, and we couldn't find out about anything going on. We were getting updates from our wives back in the states. What we've been doing [our non-profit organization] has organically grown. 2008 was a particularly tough year. At every deployment, somebody wasn't coming home.
