In this episode, Joe interviews two members of the Heroic Hearts Project: Founder and President, Jesse Gould; and Director of Development and Head of Family Relations, Allison Wilson. Gould gives a background of Heroic Hearts Project and discusses their current projects and future goals, and Wilson talks about her nonprofit, The Hope Project, and its recent merger with HHP to bring more of a focus to the other side of veteran healing: the families of veterans. While Heroic Hearts and other veteran-aligned organizations have been an answer to many vets unable to find help otherwise (and frustrated with the inconsistencies of the VA), they talk a lot about that missing piece – how crucial it is to have family involved in a veteran's reintegration, and how that healing can impact future generations. "The Veteran's Guide to Psychedelics: A Preparation and Integration Workbook" was recently released, with all proceeds going to HHP, and they are hosting their first Gala event, "Operation: Freedom To Heal," this week, December 5, in Los Angeles. The goal of the event is to fundraise, gather community, and recognize the supporters who have gotten Heroic Hearts to where it is today, and will feature live and silent auctions and a performance by Melissa Etheridge. Email Allison@heroicheartsproject.org if you'd like to attend. For links, head to the show notes page.

Our guest today is Jesse Gould, founder and president of the Heroic Hearts Project, a nonprofit pioneering psychedelic therapies for military veterans. After being deployed as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan three times, Jesse founded the Heroic Hearts Project in 2017 to spearhead the acceptance and use of ayahuasca therapy as a means of addressing the current mental health crisis among veterans. His organization has raised over $350,000 in scholarships from donors including Dr. Bronner's, partnered with the world's leading ayahuasca treatment centers, and sponsored psychiatric applications with the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Georgia. Jesse helps shape treatment programs and spreads awareness of plant medicine as a therapeutic method. He has spoken globally about psychedelics and mental health and was recognized as one of the Social Entrepreneurs To Watch For In 2020 by Cause Artist. Today, he will share insights on the importance of providing access to psychedelic medicines for veterans, the limitations of traditional treatment methods, and the need for a new approach to mental health care that prioritizes healing and community support. SummaryJesse Gould, founder of Heroic Hearts Project, discusses the importance of providing access to psychedelic medicines for veterans struggling with PTSD, depression, and anxiety. He shares his personal journey of seeking help for his own mental health issues and the limitations he faced with traditional treatment methods. Jesse emphasizes the need for a new approach to mental health care that goes beyond symptom management and focuses on healing and integration. He also highlights the importance of community support and the role of psychedelics in addressing ancestral trauma and building emotional resilience. Heroic Hearts Project is a nonprofit organization that educates people about the therapeutic potential of psychedelics and connects veterans and their families to these treatments. They provide support and guidance throughout the entire process, from preparation to integration. The organization also conducts research, advocates for policy change, and aims to reestablish supportive veteran communities. Donations can be made on their website, and veterans can apply for their programs. The goal is to provide veterans with life-saving care and a supportive community to aid in their healing journey.TakeawaysAccess to psychedelic medicines can be critical for veterans struggling with mental health issues such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety.Traditional treatment methods often focus on symptom management rather than addressing the root causes of mental health disorders.Psychedelics can be a powerful tool for healing and integration, but they require a supportive container and proper preparation and aftercare. The current mental health care system is not effectively addressing the needs of veterans, and there is a need for a new approach that prioritizes healing and community support.Ancestral trauma and emotional resilience play a significant role in mental health, and psychedelics can help individuals explore and process these aspects of their lives. Jesse Gould, a former Army Ranger, was plagued by severe PTSD after he returned home from combat. After quitting his job as an investment banker, selling all of his possessions, and wandering the world, he found himself in an ayahuasca retreat in the jungles of Peru. To his surprise, Jesse found that his symptoms of PTSD disappeared after the retreat, and his life was forever changed. He started HHP in April of 2017 “because I wanted to give my fellow veterans a way to heal their PTSD that had worked for me.” Since then, Heroic Hearts Project has helped hundreds of veterans overcome their suffering from PTSD by providing them not only with access to psychedelic programs, but with professional coaching, peer support, and other resources to empower them along their healing journeys. While HHP's number one priority is always the direct care of veterans, we're also working tirelessly to support research and advocacy efforts to improve access to psychedelics, offer programs for veteran spouses to better nurture the entire veteran family, and foster a community in which veterans can grow and give back to others who are suffering. Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world. The landscape for treating complex trauma is changing, and although there is extensive and promising research into the efficacy of psychedelic substances for the treatment of mental health disorders, it is not yet accessible for most. This week, Niall is joined by Jesse Gould, a former army ranger who is helping other veterans overcome their trauma. Jesse suffered with debilitating PTSD and after exploring every traditional avenue found himself in Peru on an Ayuhuasca retreat. The experience was transformational for Jesse. He returned home to set up the Heroic Hearts Project, with a mission to help as many US veterans as possible overcome PTSD and other military trauma by building a community that provides them with safe and supervised access to psychedelic programs, professional coaching, and ongoing community support. We are in the midst of a psychedelic revolution. It's here. Now the question is whether or not we can approach the conversation with nuance—not something we Americans are not generally celebrated for. Psychedelics force another uncomfortable conversation for many: The power of thought. The suggestibility of your brain while under the influence of psychedelics turns mindfulness into a high-stakes game. We are still in the liminal stages of talking about the mind and mental states with anything like fluency. Kegan Gill's story is so incredible that the moment we first read it we knew we needed to try and get him on the podcast. We're just lucky we found out about him early on, because he will definitely be a household name soon enough. Without spoiling too much of the story, which he tells eloquently, he was an F/A-18E Super Hornet pilot who experienced an extremely traumatic ejection, fought his way through the physical rehab, but was then laid low again by delayed onset mental health and TBI issues. Our medical system successfully brought Kegan back from the brink of death, but when it came time to get him back to actual health it failed completely. What you'll hear in this conversation are all the ways he took ownership of his recovery journey. We certainly brought Kegan on to tell his story, but he's told his story several times before. What we tried to draw out in this conversation were some key insights about the power of simple lifestyle behaviors to have profound health, fitness, and wellness benefits even in extreme situations. You can find a full written version of Kegan's story here and Kegan specifically mention's the support he received from Jesse Gould and Heroic Hearts Project so check out their page while you're there. Kegan mentions a documentary video about another high speed crash, you can find Brian Udell's (call sign Noodle) story on YouTube here. Kegan recommends a few books to read: In Defense of Food How to Change Your Mind Why We Sleep Kegan also calls out several organizations that provided him crucial support during his journey: Marcus Capone's Vet Solutions Andrew & Adam Marr's Warrior Angels Foundation Defenders of Freedom Resiliency Brain Health You can get in touch with Kegan himself on his Instagram and LinkedIn

What I discuss with Jesse Gould Jesse Gould joins me in this episode of the Passion Struck podcast to discuss his mission to help military veterans struggling with mental trauma and spread awareness of the benefits of psychedelic therapies as an alternative treatment to pharmaceuticals. For centuries, indigenous healers and Native Americans have used psychedelic plants for therapy and medical treatment. Ayahuasca, for instance, has been used over 5000 years to facilitate personal and collective healing. During ceremonies, healers would often help provide recovery and reconcile the trauma people had experienced. Over the past century, psychedelics were labeled as illicit drugs and prohibited. Jesse's goal is to change that and legalize their use for mental health ailments. 0:00 Teaser and announcements 2:37 Introduction of Jesse Gould 4:28 Participating in the 4x4x48 to support veteran non-profits 7:50 Why he founded the Heroic Hearts Project. 12:17 The benefits of treatments from psilocybin, ayahuasca, and MDMA 17:44 The path to legalizing psychedelic drugs for clinical use 22:43 MDMA intervention is having almost a 66 to 67% success rate 25:36 Why is Big Pharma doing everything it can to block its adoption? 28:36 The protocol in terms of the dosage of MDMA 30:55 How psilocybin is administered 32:22 How is Ketamine used for PTSD 41:58 The nature of side effects and how often they occur 47:40 Why your traumas is what develops you and makes you who you are 51:24 How to obtain services from Heroic Hearts 54:33 Episode wrap-up Where you can find Jesse Gould * Website: https://www.heroicheartsproject.org/ * LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jesse-gould/ * Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/weheroichearts/ * Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heroicheartsproject/ -- Welcome to Passion Struck podcast, a show where you get to join me in exploring the mindset and philosophy of the world's most inspiring everyday heroes to learn their lessons to living intentionally. On this week's podcast, Rad interviews Jesse Gould, founder of the Heroic Hearts Project, Army Ranger veteran, and psychedelic therapy advocate. Jesse talks about the modalities of psychedelic treatment, its benefits for neurogenesis, and how it can bring controlled chaos to your mind to reset it. Jesse talks about his deployments to Afghanistan and his realization that he was drinking way too much. And, more than that, he started observing his mental state take a turn for the worse. He shares his discovery of ayahuasca as an alternative treatment. Seeing how none of his efforts as of yet were worth preserving, he decided to go down to Peru to seek a shaman. Jesse details the ceremony, how entering into a psychedelic state brings forth repressed traumas, and the unique way ayahuasca reframes trauma to break the cycle of PTSD. However, not anyone should just jump in and try ayahuasca. There is preparation needed, both mentally and emotionally, as ayahuasca heightens your senses but your brain interprets the stimuli differently. Therefore, Jesse stresses that being in a safe space is paramount for psychedelic treatment. In episode 4, Cody sits down with Jesse Gould - a retired Army Ranger and president of Heroic Hearts Project. After serving three tours in Afghanistan, Jesse founded the Heroic Hearts Project to spearhead the acceptance and use of ayahuasca therapy as a means of addressing the current mental health crisis among veterans. (Time stamps below) Heroic Hearts Project (HHP) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that connects military veterans struggling with trauma to psychedelic therapy options including ayahuasca, psilocybin, ibogaine, and ketamine treatments in combination with professional coaching and integration. HHP provides these veterans, who have often exhausted all of the resources offered by the Department of Veteran Affairs and don't know where to turn, with education about and access to these alternative healing modalities. HHP's mission is to restore hope and empower each veteran in his or her own healing process. Secondarily, HHP aims to contribute to the growing base of psychedelic research, to educate the public on the potential of psychedelics based on the outcomes of this research, and to advocate for policy changes enabling increased and more equitable access to psychedelic therapies. Jesse Gould of Heroic Hearts Project is on the show for this episode to talk about his own battle with PTSD and his recovery through ayahuasca therapy. We also talk about the challenges of integrating back into civilian life after combat, the tragic mental health and suicide statistics amongst veterans, and the role Heroic Hearts Project is playing to help those veterans. More than that though, Jesse and I speak about what it's like as a soldier to find out that their government lied to justify the war they were traumatized by being in; the impact of military expansionism on the climate crisis; whether or not “the psychedelic cure” will be used by governments to justify continuing war; and, whether or not ayahuasca healing has any noticeable effects on one's political stance on the military. PsychedeRx: The Psychedelics Documentary Series - Past, Present and the Future
A cast will help a broken bone to heal, a tourniquet will help to stop the bleeding in a limb, an aspirin will alleviate a headache, time (and ice cream) will help to heal a broken heart. But how do you heal a broken mind? Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is but one of the psychiatric indications with inadequate, frequently ineffective treatment protocols, that has been in the psychedelic spotlight. There's no shortage of heartbreaking stories about men and women who have dedicated their lives to the service of their countries and endured unfathomable trauma. Add to this population the other sources of PTSD like car accidents, witnessing or experiencing violence - or even the threat of violence, sustained stress in traumatic situations (hello, COVID frontline workers - I'm looking at you), and you have an explosion in an untreated or treatment refractory population. Enter psychedelics. In this episode, we are privileged to hear from Jesse Gould, a former Army Ranger, and Keith Abraham, a former member of the UK's Parachute Regiment. These gentlemen both served their countries in combat tours in the Middle East and have suffered the invisible injuries of war. Each found his way to ayahuasca as a means of resolving his PTSD when pharmacological, talk therapy, and wholistic approaches failed him. Ayahuasca healed them when nothing else could; now, through their connected organizations - Heroic Hearts Project and Heroic Hearts Project UK - they are helping other veterans gain access to this highly promising combination therapy of psychedelics and psychiatry in what is now known as psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. In addition, we explore the story of how MDMA assisted psychotherapy, pioneered by MAPS' pivotal trials were done in an interview with Dr. Jennifer Mitchell This episode will take you into the personal stories, the science, the history, the future, and the promise of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD. Grab a tissue, you're going to need it. (And then go donate to Heroic Hearts Project so that we can help more people heal.)
Jesse Gould joins Ronan to discuss his path into the Army and his difficulties of leaving the military, how psychedelics can assist the mental health of military veterans, and how the war on drugs restricted medicines that could have helped heal the traumas of countless servicepeople. After three deployments in Afghanistan as a US Army Ranger, Jesse Gould encountered a myriad of challenges in re-acclimating to civilian life, as do many war vets. Struggling for years with severe anxiety, he decided to try an ayahuasca retreat in Peru having been drawn to its cultural and ceremonial properties. Jesse was profoundly moved by this and soon after he founded the Heroic Hearts Project in 2017 with a mission to spearhead acceptance and use of ayahuasca therapy as a means of addressing the current mental health crisis among veterans. Since its launch, Heroic Hearts has raised over $350,000 in scholarships from donors including Dr. Bronner's and partnered with the world's leading ayahuasca treatment centers, as well as sponsoring psychiatric applications with the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Georgia.Feel free to leave Ronan a message with your comments, questions, or just to say hello! https://www.speakpipe.com/fieldtripping or write us an email at fieldtripping@kastmedia.com. *Formerly Everyday Nonordinary The Podcast* Welcome to Integrating Psychedelics, featuring insights gleaned from psychedelic experiences and conversations around how to integrate this wisdom into our daily lives. I'm your host, Jenny Weinar, and in today's episode I'm speaking with Jesse Gould. Jesse is a pioneer in psychedelic therapies. As Founder and President of the Heroic Hearts Project, he has spearheaded the research and acceptance of ayahuasca therapy programs for military veterans.

We get into his time as an Army Ranger, his transition to corporate life, and how he pivoted to passion-based work. Jesse gives us the low down on the importance of psychedelic therapy versus traditional therapy and how it will change the way we treat mental illness forever. Please enjoy this important conversation with movers in the plant medicine space. Psychedelics*-no longer confined to the realms of the mysterious and illicit... What was once a controversial recreational drug is now a recognized treatment for PTSD by both the science and medical field. This is particularly important news for young Veterans. According to the most recent data from the VA, Between 2005 and 2017, 78,875 veterans took their own lives — more than the number of Americans killed in each significant conflict except for World War II and the Civil War. The active-duty Army alone saw a 30% increase in deaths by suicide from 2019 to 2020. While these numbers are staggering and heartbreaking, the pace is not slowing down. Billions of tax dollars go towards the VA. Still, they don't create substantial change because of bureaucracy or poor organization in a system that leaves soldiers and veterans in dire need of support without help. If we know psychedelics exist and science proves their efficacy, why aren't we using them to help those who have served our country? That's precisely what Jesse Gould, Founder of the Heroic Hearts Project, is trying to do. Heroic Hearts Project (https://www.heroicheartsproject.org/) is a not-for-profit that connects military veterans to effective psychedelic-based therapy programs. In this episode: - Jesse explains what the mission for the Heroic Hears project is - What a psychedelic is - How psychedelics help - The lack of support for Veterans - Where he came up with the idea for Heroic Hearts Project - His own experiences with Ayahuasca Please consider supporting his cause. While 2020 has been difficult in so many ways, this year brought psychedelic medicine further ahead by leaps and bounds. At Maya, we were honored to share the wisdom of 25 healers and leaders in the psychedelic world through this podcast. Today we are sharing their advice to practitioners. On the show, our guests offer advice and perspectives to the therapists doing this important work. Their wisdom is at times simple, profound, and even controversial or contradictory. They speak of how to approach clients of specific demographics, how therapists might relate to themselves in this work, and what our collective responsibility is to the psychedelic movement as a whole. Most of all, across the board, our guests have expressed their gratitude. Thank you, thank you, thank you, psychedelic therapists! On the show, Jesse explains how psychedelic therapists and healers should think about working with veterans. He describes his own experience with PTSD and ayahuasca as well as the details of the Heroic Hearts program—from funding—to integration coaching. Jesse gracefully responds to the delicate question of how U.S. foreign policy plays into healing veterans in Latin American countries. Jesse Gould is a former Army Ranger who founded the Heroic Hearts Project in 2017 to connect military veterans struggling with mental trauma to ayahuasca retreats and other psychedelic medicine resources. What is Ayahuasca?Ayahuasca is an Amazon plant mixture generally consumed in a tea like brew. The ayahuasca tea is made from a combination of the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and chacruna (Psychotria viridis). Along with other admixture plants to be included in the ayahuasca, the ayahuasca vine and chacruna are processed, mixed together, added to large pots and cooked over an open fire for 8+ hours. The DMT in the brew induces altered states of consciousness, usually lasting between 4 to 8 hours after ingestion. These altered states often allows individuals to revisit and process issues associated with personal traumas and repressed memories in a safe, controlled setting. Many compare the experience to doing ten years of therapy in one week. The tea has been used in the Amazon for millennia by shamans for spiritual and medicinal properties. Recent scientific studies have shown that it is potentially a very powerful tool for fighting anxiety, depression, addiction and numerous other mental and physical issues.Media releases from Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS):A Phase 3 Program of MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Severe Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)DEA Approves First-Ever Trial of Medical Marijuana for PTSD in VeteransPRESS RELEASE: MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy Shows Promise for Veterans with Chronic, Treatment-Resistant PTSDAffiliate links continue to make this site possible and are present in this post.

In today's episode, Joe interviews Jesse Gould, founder and president of the Heroic Hearts Project, a nonprofit organization that connects military veterans to ayahuasca retreats, and Keith Abraham, head of the newly created Heroic Hearts UK branch. They discuss the similarities of their military pasts and post-combat struggles, and how they both took part in ayahuasca ceremonies at Peru's La Medicina, where they eventually met. They note the need to create the UK branch came from the realization that UK vets simply weren't getting as much attention as those in the US. They talk about the unlikely allyship of Crispin Blunt, member of Parliament and co-chair of the All Party Parliamentory Group for Drug Policy Reform, the consideration of using psilocybin in future work as a less intense ayahuasca alternative, current microbiome studies and the excitement around new data vs. the "death by survey" complications when working with people in need, and how helpful a military mindset can be in these situations. They share some success stories but talk about how far we need to go in helping veterans come back to society, and how much we'd benefit from a more ceremonial acceptance of the passage from one way of life to another. The corporate 9-5 world can be tough for anyone, but ultimately, finding a purpose and connecting to a community is what's most important toward these veterans reintegrating back to their "pre-army" lives. Notable Quotes “Ayahuasca changed everything. I came out of that jungle a very different person. I wouldn’t say that I had a 400% healing experience, but I had that massive, massive, massive catalyst where I knew that my life had to change. And it has. And from there, in the year since, when I got myself together, I started realizing, ‘you know what? I’m in a good place. How can I introduce UK veterans to the experience that I’ve had, because I see that as vitally important?’ And then I was introduced to Jesse, and it turned out that the organization that I thought I wanted to create had already been created perfectly.” -Keith Abraham “My sons actually in the same unit as I was (in the parachute regiment.) When I left the parachute regiment and went for my ayahuasca experience in Peru, I then came back, and my son was looking at me like, “wait, you’re a grizzly old war veteran, and now you’re talking about, like ‘everything is connected, and love and peace and harmony’ um... this is… strange.’’ He’s gotten really used to it now, but yea, it’s wonderful that these plant medicines can do these things for us. [We have] such strong minds and characters, and this ingrained training as well, but it can be overwhelmed in a good way.” -Keith Abraham “One of the things we teach through Heroic Hearts, especially in the integration process, is: it’s fine to maintain your warrior- that warrior spirit, that warrior soul. But now you need to learn to use that energy and use that strength towards other means. You might be done with the fighting for now, but that doesn’t mean you’re set out to pasture and done with society. There’s a lot of different ways you can use that energy. ...How can you continue to be a warrior, just on a different trajectory?” -Jesse Gould Links Heroic Hearts Project Website Heroic Hearts Project UK Website Heroic Hearts Facebook group Heroic Hearts Twitter Heroic Hearts Instagram La Medicina Support the show Patreon Leave us a review on Facebook or iTunes Share us with your friends Join our Facebook group - Psychedelics Today group – Find the others and create community. About Keith Abraham Keith Abraham served 9 years as a member of The Parachute Regiment, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Throughout the latter years of his military service and during this time working for an investment bank, Keith began experiencing severe symptoms of anxiety and depression. After exhausting the majority of services and options offered by the NHS and military charities without much success, Keith realized a new approach was needed. His profound experiences with ayahuasca and psilocybin convinced him of the vital role plant medicines have to offer those suffering from PTSD, brain injuries and mental ill-health.

Today, Jesse Gould, the founder of Heroic Hearts Project, is here to share his story... Jesse is a former Army Ranger with a background in finance. After struggling with mental health issues stemming from his military career and finding little support at home, Jesse left it all behind and went to Peru. Hoping to find the answers he was searching for, Jesse discovered the therapeutic uses of ayahuasca. Jesse describes how his search for help eventually pointed him towards ayahuasca. While in Peru, Jesse spent a week at an ayahuasca retreat. He found that, although he was nervous and the process was difficult, the therapeutic supports throughout helped bring a new sense of clarity. In the end, Jesse found that the whole experience gave him useful tools for handling the anxiety that he previously found crippling. Once he came home, Jesse was inspired to share this experience with others like him. He started the Heroic Hearts Project with the intention of helping other veterans connect with reputable ayahuasca retreats and support their path towards healing. Over the past few years, Jesse has worked with many veterans who have experienced profound results from ayahuasca therapies. In this episode: The struggles that Jesse experienced as a veteran seeking mental health support What to expect from a week-long ayahuasca retreat The lessons of learning to surrender and give over control Helping veterans take advantage of ayahuasca therapies What many veterans are saying about the use of psychedelics to help treat PTSD Quotes: “I knew it was a big change. I knew the small changes I was making weren’t having an impact. I might as well try something and I’m glad I did.” [8:51] “You just come to the realization that you are not in control and that’s okay.” [11:13] “The psychedelic process can bring profound changes and some answers. But the person still has to implement these changes and make some hard life decisions for it to fully take effect.” [22:35] Links: Save 20% at Proper Hemp Co with the code “plant medicine”. We discuss mental health, the opiate epidemic, and alternative modalities that are helping heal the world. Jesse Gould, Founder of Heroic Hearts Project, was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and grew up in New Smyrna Beach, FL. In 2009, he graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Economics. After working in investment banking for a short time he enlisted in the Army and became an Airborne Ranger for four years and three combat deployments. Most recently, he worked in finance in Tampa, FL. After struggling with severe anxiety for many years, he finally decided to go to an ayahuasca retreat which has had a profoundly positive effect on his anxiety and daily life. During the week-long retreat, he instantly saw the healing potential of the drink and knew that it could be a powerful tool in healing the mental struggles of his fellow veterans. This experience inspired him to found Heroic Hearts Project, an organization that connects veterans in need of healing with ayahuasca therapy. Since its founding, Heroic Hearts Project has quickly become one of the most prominent veteran voices pushing for psychedelic based therapies. In Episode 19 of the Disruptors for Good podcast I speak with Jesse Gould, Founder of Heroic Hearts Project on how plant medicine is transforming the lives of veterans with PTSD and why its important to overcome the stigma of psychedelics.
Download In this episode, Joe interviews Jesse Gould, founder of Heroic Hearts Project, a non-profit doing psychedelic work with veterans. They discuss the difficulties veterans face finding healing from their PTSD in the current landscape. 3 Key Points: Heroic Hearts is a project geared toward raising funds and providing resources for veterans to receive healing through Ayahuasca and other psychedelics. Our current landscape of social media and government make it extremely difficult to receive donations and get veterans the help that they need. Heroic Hearts is trying to bridge the gap between PTSD and access to healing. Veterans tend to feel alone in their symptoms from their experiences, so creating community and an integration plan are both really important in the healing process. Navigating Psychedelics Trip Journal Integration Workbook Show Notes About Jessie Founder of Heroic Hearts Project He found the healing potential of Ayahuasca after a week long retreat after struggling with severe anxiety after combat deployments with the army He was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and grew up in Florida Jesse graduated with an Economics Degree from Cornell Heroic Hearts Heroic Hearts is trying to be the voice of veterans in the psychedelic community There are very few options through the department of veteran affairs The organization helps raise money to provide opportunity for veterans to access treatment such as Ayahuasca retreats PTSD and Addiction affect the veteran community more than the general public Aligning the veteran voice with the psychedelic cause is a powerful force for change Integration is so important, both to understand what you're trying to achieve (beforehand) and stay on that path (afterward) Jessie says they work very hard to make sure vets are having true healing through their Ayahuasca experiences PTSD People have a common misconception around PTSD that there are these constant traumatic outbreaks, and although that can happen, there are so many people living their day to day lives and you'd never know they have PTSD but they still suffer from it PTSD doesn't always come from severely traumatic events like war, it can come from other things like childhood abuse or sexual assault SSRIs numb the pain but don't help with any actual healing Donations It's really hard to get donations Heroic Hearts provided financial scholarships so far to about 15 people They are doing a retreat in May for another 7 veterans The received a grant from Ubiome to study the effects of Ayahuasca on the gut microbiome There is a strong link between the stomach biome and mood They are coming up with do it yourself marketing campaigns to help individuals raise their own money, setting people up for success In a place where it's easier to get money, it's also harder to get money because so many people are creating personal fundraisers for their dog, etc. There are more and more large organizations helping smaller companies like Heroic Hearts with research Community Breathwork can be used as a helpful bridge between patients and their PTSD Veterans tend to trust veterans more They tend to feel alone so creating community among vets is really important Psychedelics and ceremony really help vets transition out of feeling alone Jesse says he plans on creating local meetups and groups for vets He tends to send vets on retreats with friends or other vets from the same community so when they return from their retreat they have a built-in community to come back to Heroic Hearts Project There is an application for vets There are many options to donate, all funds raised go right to the vets “Why is there no government funding going to the biggest breakthrough in PTSD research through the MAPS MDMA therapy? Not one cent of government money has gone to that.” - Jesse “Why are we having to send veterans to other countries to get the mental health that they deserve?” - Jesse Links Website About Jesse Gould Jesse founded Heroic Hearts Project after attending an Ayahuasca retreat in Iquitos, Peru on February 2017. During the week long retreat he instantly saw the healing potential of the drink and knew that it could be a powerful tool in healing the mental struggles of his fellow veterans. Jesse was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and grew up in New Smyrna Beach, FL. In 2009 he graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Economics. After working in investment banking for a short time he enlisted in the Army and became an Airborne Ranger for four years and three combat deployments. Most recently, he worked in finance in Tampa, FL After struggling with severe anxiety for many years, he finally decided to go to an ayahuasca retreat which has had a profoundly positive effect on his anxiety and daily life.'I know what it is like to be at the mercy of uncontrollable elements in your own head. I also know the extreme relief of finally having these elements under control. Ayahuasca provided this. We have the ability to help thousands who are suffering but we let politics and ignorance get in the way. This is unacceptable. I started this foundation because the therapy works, I will risk what I have to ensure my fellow veterans get the treatment they deserve and a new chance at life.'

These veterans typically have tried all the available resources offered by the Department of Veteran Affairs with limited success leaving them with very few options. We open the door to other viable options. HHP also provides support and professional counseling to these veterans throughout the process.

Can psychedelic therapy transform the way we approach mental health issues? The discussion around psychedelic therapy has started to move from the niche and hippy into the mainstream in recent months with people like writer Michael Pollan opening up the conversation around the potential of psychedelics through the lens of scientific potential. One interesting psychedelic is ayahuasca, a South American tea that contains the chemical DMT. This week, we have on Jesse Gould and Yuriy Blokhin, the leaders behind Heroic Hearts Project, a foundation for veterans to help them learn about and access psychedelic therapy. Jesse is a former Army Airborne Ranger and Yuriy was the first employee of the popular messenger app Kik. These two gentleman, as you can tell, come from very different backgrounds, but were brought together with their own experiences with ayahuasca and the mission of changing the culture and dialogue around the value of psychedelics. In this discussion, you’ll discover: - The research around psychotherapy...such as how we discovered the true role of serotonin through studying the effects of LSD - What differentiates ayahuasca from other psychedelics, and why Heroic Hearts Project is focused on using it specifically for therapy - How thoughtful messaging plays a critical role in the societal acceptance of psychedelics ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take a short survey that will help us improve the podcast and be entered in a HVMN Ketone giveaway: https://go.hvmn.com/podcastsurvey We also want to hear from our listeners/viewers!
