We are BYKE...for the first couple of thoughts of 2025. I'm working on doing video for every podcast, including Clear Visions. I had a homie insist that I do a show that speaks on my thoughts that will live on YouTube. I've been putting it off FOREVER, so this are the efforts. In this episode, I speak about the "IT" factor that people believe that Joey Bada$$ is missing and why Hip Hop is judgmental towards emcees and the culture. I also speak on a few books that I'm reading: High and Rising: A Book About De La Soul by Marcus J. Moore, The Spook Who Sat By The Door by Sam Greenlee, and Culturemaking: When Creative Entrepreneurship and Community Building Collide by Houston White. Then I wrapped up the show speaking on the DEI situation as it relates to buying direct and speaking about my favorite, and least favorite social media platforms. More video formats cometh. Hello all, I am writing this a few weeks after we recorded to say this is the last episode dropping this year. Do not despair, we will be coming out strong into the new year with our 3 album-run deep dive episodes that we promised in the preview. But I just want to thank everyone who gave us a chance in our first year. We appreciate everyone who told us were listening, you know who you are - please message us "potato salad" if you read this! More season 2 is to come with new episodes planned that we will preview soon.We usually try to keep it vague but time is weird, so you are allowed to know that this was recorded almost a month after the passing of Quincy Jones, and a week after the release of Kendrick Lamar's surprise album "GMX." Julius took time to mull over a playlist that pays tribute to Quincy Jones' artistry, and willingness to allow it to be remixed and sampled by rappers, which is just one of many things to celebrate about him. Links to the playlist of songs and the song they sample below! Then we give our early reactions to GNX - an album that received mixed reviews out of the gate. We address some of those reviews and give our own takes, and what you will hear is shocking: We love it!We cap it off by reacting to some rather disappointing news about De La Soul's cold reaction to the newly released cultural biography "High and Rising: A Book About De La Soul" by Marcus J. Moore. If you listen our "Fall" episode, you'll get more context on why we felt the need to react.Happy new year everyone! In 1989, a little known rap group from Long Island changed hip hop forever. With the release of their debut album 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Soul were thrust into the mainstream, inspiring an entire generation of young nerds who liked music, art, and fashion. It's a follow up to Moore's first book, “The Butterfly Effect,” about Kendrick Lamar, which came out in 2020.As Marcus writes, “High and Rising doesn't just tell the story of De La Soul; it unpacks the birth of hip-hop and the evolution of alternative rap. It's also a memoir about my own travels through life and the environment, and how their music helped me grow as a person and creator in a landscape that doesn't always understand differing viewpoints of artistry.”We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Marcus J. Moore!

For years, the hip-hop group De La Soul's music from the years 1989 to 2001 had been kept off of streaming platforms. Classic albums such as 3 Feet High and Rising, Stakes Is High, and De La Soul Is Dead were mired in clearance and other legal issues related to the large amount of samples they used in their production. Last Friday, six De La Soul albums from this period finally became available to stream. Music journalist Marcus J. Moore is currently in the process of writing a biography about the group, and he joins to tell us more about the history of the group's founding in Long Island, listen to some tracks, and take your calls.

Radio Milwaukee's Tarik Moody leads a discussion on NPR Music's number one album pick and why it's one of 2020's most important and potent releases. In just over a year, Sault has released three albums with little warning and scant member information. If the group's previous albums, '5' and '7' brought the funk-soul party, then 'Untitled (Black Is)' "funnels rage and sorrow into contemplative streams of thought, over equally brooding music meant to slow your heart rate," Marcus J. Moore wrote in his review for NPR Music. He further called the album "a robust collection of funk, soul, meditative spoken-word and protest chants meant to score the full spectrum of Blackness."This conversation about the Sault album originally ran live on NPR Music's YouTube channel shortly after the record was released in June.
The Butterfly Effect: How Kendrick Lamar Ignited The Soul Of Black America is as much a document of the Compton superstar’s journey-to-date as it is author Marcus J. Moore’s journey from one of the most recognizable and important names in music journalism to a burgeoning cultural pundit whose voice is already having an impact. Moore’s words take you inside the culture that fueled Lamar’s ambitious work and beyond to explore the real-world implications of black excellence and community in an America that still, in 2020, largely rejects both. This week, Moore joins us for a candid discussion of his work, a re-imagined view of creative culture, and how the journey is the thing you can often learn from the most. Love this show? With 13 Grammy wins across four studio albums, and a catalogue of iconic imagery from videos and live performances, rapper Kendrick Lamar defined music and culture in the 2010s like no other artist. Music journalist Marcus J. Moore joins us to discuss his new book, The Butterfly Effect: How Kendrick Lamar Ignited the Soul of Black America, chronicling the impact of his career thus far.
an innovative storyteller whose body of work has been compared to James Joyce and James Baldwin. He is a visionary who will go down as history as one of the most important artists of all time. But what's so striking about Kendrick Lamar, aside from his impressive accolades, is how he's effectively established himself as a formidable opponent of oppression, a force for change. Through his confessional poetics, his politically charged anthems, and his radical performances, Lamar has become a beacon of light for many people in America. Now, for the first time, we will be taken on a journey of Lamar's life. Told through his three albums, The Butterfly Effect gives unparalleled insight into his background, influences and the importance of his music. The book traces not only Lamar's powerful impact on music but also on our current society, especially under the weight of police brutality, divisive politics, and social injustice. With exclusive interviews with his family, friends, and record producers, this book is the must-read for any fan.
