This is the Citizen of Heaven podcast, my report for the week of March 30-April 5, 2024. I am Hal Hammons, citizen of heaven. I'm here with a behind-the-scenes look at what's going on in my life and the life of this podcast. This week's livestream on Facebook was thwarted by the gremlins in my internet service; apologies for that. Most of my time this week will be focused on “Helen of Troy” by Margaret George, my first big book of the year. Before I start the show, let me encourage you to subscribe to the podcast if you have not done so. If you have and it has been a blessing to you, please consider sharing it and giving it a good review. Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. He is the host of the Citizen of Heaven podcast. You are encouraged to seek him and the Lakewoods Drive church through Facebook and other social media. Lakewoods Drive is an autonomous group of Christians dedicated to praising God, teaching the gospel to all who will hear, training Christians in righteousness, and serving our God and one another faithfully. We believe the Bible is God's word, that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, that heaven is our home, and that we have work to do here while we wait. Regular topics of discussion and conversation include: Christians, Jesus, obedience, faith, grace, baptism, New Testament, Old Testament, authority, gospel, fellowship, justice, mercy, faithfulness, forgiveness, Twenty Pages a Week, Bible reading, heaven, hell, virtues, character, denominations, submission, service, character, COVID-19, assembly, Lord's Supper, online, social media, YouTube, Facebook.
If there was a huge asteroid hurtling toward Earth threatening to destroy life as we know it and you could see one more show before you die, what would it be? It can be anything you want - a show you've seen before, one that you wish you'd seen, or something you've made up entirely. What would be YOUR Last Show on Earth? This is the podcast in which we ask a special guest the big, BIG question that nobody ever needed or bothered to ask. Our guest this episode is George BlagdenGeorge Blagden is an English actor who has enjoyed a successful career in theatre, film who also enjoys a nice sideline in voiceovers and audiobooks. He is married to fellow actor Laura Pitt-Pulford and they have a young son called Arlo. He is best known for his role as Louis XIV in the French-produced television series drama Versailles as Grantaire in the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables and Athelstan in the television series Vikings. He has narrated many audiobooks including the Penguin Classics audiobook version of Homer's The Odyssey and an immersive audiovisual tour for the Circus Maximus in Rome written by Margaret George for the BARDEUM mobile app. (We don't know what this is either). Theatre credits include Tartuffe, Into the Woods and the role of PJ in the 2018 revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical comedy, Company, at the Gielgud Theatre in the West End.(Disclaimer - Due to the nature of the George's Last Show choice this episode does feature some very fruity language...apologies. Margaret George writes biographical novels about outsized historical characters: Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots, Cleopatra, Mary Magdalene, Helen of Troy, and Elizabeth I. Her latest, The Confessions of Young Nero, will be published in March. All six of her novels have been New York Times bestsellers, and the Cleopatra novel was made into an Emmy-nominated ABC-TV miniseries. *This episode first aired in 2019, and it was so much fun that I'd wanted to share with you again! -- Credits: Host: Rebecca Larson Guest: Margaret George Edited by: Rebecca Larson Voice Over: David Black Music: Ketsa, Alexander Nakarada, and Winnie the Moog --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rebecca-larson/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rebecca-larson/support

As an author and well-known podcast host herself, Rebecca started her blog Tudors Dynasty in 2015 and it has since exploded into a go-to source for Tudor knowledge. She has interviewed herself a variety of well-known historians such as Tracy Borman, Margaret George, Alison Weir, Dan Jones, Suzannah Lipscomb and so many more. In this exclusive interview, Rebecca and Megan chat about everything from Thomas Seymour's romantic appeal to the 33 charges his own brother and nephew threw at him, leading him to the dreaded scaffold. First Draft Episode #278: Katharine McGee Katharine McGee is the New York Times bestselling author of The Thousandth Floor series, as well as American Royals and its sequel, Majesty. Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode In her fanfiction, Katharine would correct existing books to have happier endings, like the His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman (she got so attached to her new ending that she hasn’t yet gotten the courage to read The Secret Commonwealth, sequel to The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage) and the Redwall series by Brian Jacques Katharine wishes she knew about National Novel Writing Month when she was drafting her thesis Katharine has a soft spot for works that reclaim the stories of women who, to this point, have mostly been known for being adjacent to men as the men make history. Novels like The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley; Margaret George’s Helen of Troy: A Novel Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston Katharine edited Pretty Little Liars books 9-16 by Sara Shepard, and Kass Morgan’s The 100 (listen to Kass’s First Draft interview here), and some of Laura Avery’s books When Katharine first tried her hand at writing American Royals, she’d been watching a lot of House of Cards, so the tone of her book was MUCH darker than what ended up on shelves Katharine was lucky enough to go on book tour with Kendare Blake, New York Times bestselling author of the Three Dark Crowns series, Anna Dressed in Blood, and more (listen to us chatting on this live episode of First Draft!) Katharine cites Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies series as a major influence over her vision for the future in the Thousandth Floor series Katharine pitches American Royals as Crazy Rich Asians meets The Crown If you get the chance, ask Katharine about her feelings on how publishing is represented in the TV show Younger American Royals was featured in The Skimm; However, Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine remains a moving target The Secret Diary of Ann Boelyn by Robin Maxwell I want to hear from you! From the archives comes this 2006 interview with Margaret George, who has written an array of fictional biographies of such historical figures as Henry VIII, Cleopatra, and Nero. This particular conversation centers on her book "Helen of Troy: A Novel."

My dad retired this year, and previous to 2019 had NEVER READ A BOOK- like, no joke-not even at school! But this year, he started picking up books (3 to be exact) and asked for “a book” for his birthday. So .. he’s not really sure what he likes in books- he read two memoirs (old rock n roll guys) and one hyper local history about the town he grew up in. He’s probably not a fiction guy, or ready for fiction. It’s such a clean slate I’m overwhelmed by where to go with this! He likes classic cars, late night tv, SNL, Will Ferrell sense of humor, he worked in television for 40 years, local to both/either Cleveland Ohio and Portland Maine. Not into politics. A note: I am planning on getting him Kitchen Confidential because I mentioned it to him & he thought that sounded fun. -Cate 2. Hello! I’m going to try to be as concise as possible with a sensitive ask. My cousin recently confided in me that she has started the transition from male to female. She is in her early 30s, so transition has some unique obstacles, and she has been open about her past struggles with depression and anxiety. So far family has been accepting as she has slowly confided various family members but I’m worried about some of our more religious family. I’ve been looking for books to help me support her as an ally. I have read some intersectional feminist works (Janet Mock and Whipping Girl by Julia Serano) but would like book recommendations more focused on transitioning later in life. I’m hoping for nonfiction but will take fiction as well. I’m a pharmacist so I’m also open to something more academic/scientific too. Thanks for your help! -Dianna 3. Hey! My English teacher said that if we put in a request here we would get some extra credit. We’re an obnoxious class and she loves this podcast so I thought I’d err on the side of caution. (You’ve responded to a request of hers in an episode before, her name is Kirsten. She was the one with the weird book list). I also would like a book recommendation because my bookshelf has been read and re-read numerous times over. Some of my favorite books are The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, the Ender’s Game series, and those weird Star Trek novels William Shatner wrote. Also if you have any strange, out of place books that don’t really have a spot on bookshelves, that’d be awesome too. Thanks! -Sam 4. Happy spoopy season! I’m looking for recommendations for fiction with ghosts as main / significant characters or fiction about ghost hunting. I really enjoyed City of Ghosts by V. E. Schwab and I’m interested in reading other books like it. I’m open to YA and adult fiction, although I tend to prefer YA most of the time. Thanks for your help!
Awhile ago, on Facebook, I asked for suggestions on guests to have on the show. One of my followers (I wish I could recall who it was to thank them) requested Margaret George. At the time I believed she was unattainable. One day I worked up the nerve to contact her and ask - what was the worst that would happen, right? I was pleasantly surprised when I heard that she was interested. This was many, many, many months ago. Today, I finally talked to her and thoroughly enjoyed our conversation. On today’s episode I welcome another one of my favorite authors, Margaret George. Margaret and I talk about her novels: The Autobiography of Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scotland and the Isles and Elizabeth I. We discussed where her love of history originated as well as the history behind her books. We talk about the ridiculous 72,000 people Henry VIII executed, Katheryn Howard, the TV series The Spanish Princess and even Thomas Seymour (I didn't expect it). Be sure to stick around until the end to discover something you may not have known about this prolific author. May 1, 2019 carries the burdens and celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the 442nd Regiment heading off to fight in World War II. The 442nd was made up of the Japanese American men taken out of internment camps all over the west coast; they fought valiantly at home and in Europe to prove their loyalty to the US. Award-winning author and retinal surgeon Andrew Lam releases Repentance (Tiny Fox Press) on that commemorative day. The novel tells of Daniel Tokunaga and the journey he goes on to discover his father’s connection to the 442nd during World War II. Answers unravel as the Department of Defense investigates a horrible mishap that happened in a battle against the Germans in France, and Daniel searches for the truth behind his family’s catastrophic past. "Suspenseful, touching, and beautifully written." --Margaret George, New York Times best-selling author of Elizabeth I France, October 1944. A Japanese American war hero has a secret. A secret so awful he'd rather die than tell anyone--one so entwined with the brave act that made him a hero that he's determined never to speak of the war. Ever.
Originally aired on January 3rd 2018.
Margaret George's fictional biographies of towering world figures-brimming ''with lust, violence, cruelty and lively conversation'' (Detroit Free Press) while adhering as closely as possible to the factual historical record-include Helen of Troy, The Memoirs of Cleopatra, The Autobiography of Henry VIII, and Mary, Called Magdalene, among many others. All have been international bestsellers. The sequel to The Confessions of Young Nero, George's latest novel finds the titular tyrant earning his place in history as Rome's most notorious ruler. Madeline Miller is the author of The Song of Achilles, the ''fast, true and incredibly rewarding'' (USA Today) Orange Prize-winning reimagining of Homer's The Iliad and its doomed champion. An Ivy League-educated classicist, for the last decade she has taught Latin, Greek, and Shakespeare to high school students. Miller's latest novel, the New York Times number-one bestselling Circe, is a subversive revision of the story of the daughter of Helios, a witch, lover, and humanist who draws the ire of both gods and mortals. Margaret George appears at the 2011 National Book Festival. Speaker Biography: One of today's premier historical novelists, Margaret George has written about Helen of Troy, Cleopatra, Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots and Mary Magdalene. She has now published "Elizabeth I: A Novel" (Viking), about the legendary Elizabeth Tudor, the Virgin Queen. The book focuses on the last 15 years of her reign, beginning with the Armada in 1588, the greatest crisis she encountered. Although George's books of historic figures are fiction, she takes great pains to make them as factually accurate as possible.
