Mark Taylor-Canfield reporting for www.democracywatchnews.org summarizes his online attendance at this year's United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's press freedom events hosted by UNESCO. https://en.unesco.org/commemorations/worldpressfreedomday  UNESCO is a specialized agency of the United Nations aimed at promoting world peace and security through international cooperation in education, arts, sciences and culture. Several goals were advanced during this event. Social media platforms should increase transparency about any actions to stop the spread of disinformation and to promote trustworthy information instead. Human rights-based governance is needed to ensure that internet companies do more to tackle disinformation, online hate speech and potentially harmful content. This must be consistent with international standards on freedom of expression, access to information and the safety of journalists. Privacy standards must be strengthened in regard to threats to the right to privacy by digital technologies and practices such as data retention, artificial intelligence, spyware, and arbitrary surveillance. Legal actions are needed to prevent and prosecute illegal surveillance of journalists, both by public and private parties, while there should be strengthened legal protection for journalists to keep their sources confidential. Platforms and police services must take strong steps to prevent and eliminate online attacks against journalists, orchestrated campaigns of harassment, intimidation, and violations of privacy. Intensified measures need to be taken to protect women journalists, who are especially violently targeted online and offline, such as by increasing responsiveness to their situation and developing tools to identify and fight online violence. Of immediate concern is the economic viability of media, as many outlets continue to bleed advertising revenues to Internet companies, resulting in news deserts and existential threats to media pluralism and independence. Member States, Internet intermediaries and civil society all have a role to play to break the digital siege on journalism, and to find multistakeholder solutions to the challenges. It serves as an occasion to inform citizens of the violations of press freedom. This year the events went on for one week. Mark Taylor-Canfield reports. Dean Edwards, International Coordinating Editor and executive producer does a follow-up on the Progressive movement. Then he talks about Sudan. People on the streets there are largely dissatisfied with both the coup and the ousted government. Then he talks about Populism in Sudan. Populism is a communications strategy with three steps. 1. Identify and build relationships with your audience to allow for effective engagement. 2. Detail effect of current events on specific people. 3 communicate about resources and solutions. Some people are identity first people and others are solutions first people. #ProgressiveMovement#populism#IdentityPolitics   Sally Gellert, Telecommunications and Media Services reports on New Jersey.  Successes. High vaccination rate, mail-in ballot election went smoothly, guaranteed sick leave of 40 hours annually for State workers, a minimum wage increasing to $15 per hour by 2024, a millionaire tax, environmental impacts on marginalized communities of construction projects, and decriminalization of marijuana. Yet, more needs to be addressed. #NewJersey    John Harvey, Chief Information Officer reports on Facebook's name change to Meta.  Meta being a holding company and, for example, Facebook being a product of Meta. Cautionary information about new VR headsets from Facebook. There was a lot of emphasis on holographic avatars during Zuckerberg's presentation about Meta. #FacebookMeta#VR#HolographicAvatars   Mark Taylor-Canfield, Executive Director reports on arts and music in Seattle. History of the Seattle music scene since the 1960's. Now for several years there has been displacement of low-income people including artists and musicians because of corporations purchasing and replacing large blocks of real estate for new construction for the use of corporations. Real estate prices and rents have skyrocketed. Seattle does not have any form of rent control or adequate protection for historic sites. Many artists and musicians have been evicted in this process. Several music venues and art galleries have been forced out. #SeattleArtsScene#SeattleGentrification    Discussion follows.     Duration: 28:49   Recorded  10-28-21 Listen or Direct download: http://democracycast.libsyn.com #DemocracyHistory,#PressFreedom,#PublicNewspaperSubsidy,#InformationDemocracy,#NeedForDemocracy,#PeoplePower,#PowerOfThePeople,#Voting,#VoteWithFeet,#VotingModernDemocracies,#RightToVote,#RiseOfDemocracy,#DeclineOfDemocracy   Send listener feedback to democracycast@earthlink.net  Our website:  www.democracywatchnews.org  Our production team and theme music credits https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rnPeRDB3JTrr80N_NlLmUM7nEzrRejw8-5qFYd45W5M/edit?usp=sharing

Greenpeace research predicts increased oil tanker traffic on the Salish Sea, Puget Sound and along the Pacific coast as a result of proposed expansions to the pipeline which the Canadian government purchased from the Kinder Morgan corporation. https://www.greenpeace.org/usa/about/shiptour/about-the-arctic-sunrise/ Organized resistance to the pipeline has been led by First Nations in British Columbia and Washington State. The pipeline crosses reservations and tribal land. https://breakfree2016.org/ https://350.org/category/keep-it-in-the-ground/ SEATTLE (AP) Dozens of climate activists have blocked railroad tracks leading to two oil refineries in northwest Washington state to oppose the flow of oil from trains to those facilities. About 150 people spent the night in tents pitched on the railroad tracks near Anacortes, about 70 miles north of Seattle. Many of them were feeling jubilant Saturday morning as they prepared for a second day of demonstrations targeting the nearby Shell and Tesoro oil refineries. Dozens more are expected to join the protesters who have formed a barricade on the tracks, said Ahmed Gaya, a spokesman with the Break Free Pacific Northwest who also spent the night on the tracks. "The plan is to hold this space," he said. "People in the Northwest and around the world are prepared to build these movements (of mass disobedience) and keep fossil fuels in the ground." The protests are part of a series of global actions calling on people to "break free" from dependence on oil, coal and other fossil fuels. Similar demonstrations are taking place in Los Angeles and Albany, New York, on Saturday and in Washington D.C. on Sunday. In upstate New York, climate activists gathered at a crude oil shipment hub on the Hudson River to denounce fossil fuels and promote renewable energy sources. About 40 activists from numerous groups paddled on the river near the port on Friday with anti-oil signs and banners. A group sat on train tracks in downtown Albany on Saturday to protest the oil trains. Albany police reported no immediate arrests. Albany is a key hub for crude-by-rail shipments from North Dakota's Bakken Shale region. In Washington state, there have been no arrests as of Saturday morning, according to BNSF Railway and Skagit County officials. "We're currently not running traffic on the line," BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said. "Our operations are flexible on this line. We had anticipated this and therefore adjusted scheduling with customers." The railroad tracks, which connects BNSF's mainline to Anacortes, serves the two refineries as well as other customers. "At this point, we're standing back, letting them protest and developing a plan and will take action as necessary," Melonas said Saturday morning. Skagit County spokeswoman Bronlea Mishler said authorities are monitoring and that there were no plans as of Saturday morning to move the activists. "At this point, we're playing it by ear," she said. The three-day event began Friday and includes "kayaktivists" demonstrating on water, community workshops and an indigenous ceremony. A march is planned Saturday afternoon in front of the oil refineries. Protesters began pitching tents, erecting colorful flags and signs and setting up the railroad blockade Friday evening. Some did yoga or mediated, others chanted and sang. Organizers say they want to transition to renewable energy in a way that doesn't leave workers or communities behind, and they're willing to risk arrest to engage in civil disobedience. In Washington state, organizers are targeting two refineries that are among the top sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the state. Officials with both Shell and Tesoro said in earlier statements that they respect the right of people to demonstrate peacefully, and that safety is their highest priority. Many of the nearly 40 groups involved in organizing the event were also involved in large on-water kayak protests against Shell's Arctic oil drilling rig when it parked at a Seattle port last year.   From:  http://komonews.com/news/local/protesters-block-train-tracks-to-2-anacortes-refineries
