Brian Ritchie is our first guest whose primary instrument - the one that helped make his band Violent Femmes a household name - is an acoustic bass. Today we hear how all that came to be, the band's path from busking on the streets of Milwaukee to rocking stadiums, and why their approach really hasn't changed all that much. Along the way he tells some funny stories about early gigs, opens up about a new acoustic bass he's gotten his hands on and even shares what Flea told him about working with producer Michael Beinhorn. Also - and this will make sense after you listen - here are two updates to things I say in this episode: My amazing engineer/mixer Matt Noble pointed me to lutefish.com, a hardware-software set-up that does enable near real-time jamming over distances less than 500 miles. I haven't tried it out, because it requires being hardwired to my modem and that's too far away from my basses. Parquet Courts' (fantastic) bassist Sean Yeaton doesn't play a stock short scale bass - it's a frankenbass made up of the body and pickups of an ‘84 Fender Bullet bass (short scale) and the neck of a '50s P-Bass reissue (standard scale). It also has a weird hole in it. A jam packed edition of Nats Chat after a 10-6 victory over the Dodgers to avoid the sweep. Mark (Live from LA) & Al marvel at the five home runs hit by the Nationals in the victory; two of which came from Keibert Ruiz. He homered three times in less than 24 hours against his old team to already match last season's HR output for the young catcher (7 HRs). Luis Garcia went deep at the perfect time as his 3-run blast broke the 5-5 tie in the top of the 8th. (15:40) Jeimer Candelario had a go- ahead 2 run HR in the 5th as part of his big day in Los Angeles. Mark takes Al's approach on how to evaluate Candelario's utility to the franchise this season. (22:05) Patrick Corbin's outing began as a nightmare as he allowed three runs in three batters. Corbin then settled in and was able to make it through five innings despite issuing four walks. He enters June with a 4.92 ERA. (25:25) The "A" Bullpen was called upon on Wednesday and Hunter Harvey stepped up by nailing down the final six outs. Kyle Finnegan however had a rough afternoon, as he had a pitch clock violation and allowed a HR. Harvey has a long injury history and the hosts put in perspective the amount of work he has had this season and what lies ahead. (37:15) The Harrisburg Senators (AA Affiliate) are playing in Bowie this week and Tim Shovers caught up with Terry Byrom, the team's long-time voice. Terry gives his career background and also relays his first hand account of James Wood, Robert Hassell III, and Jackson Rutledge. Wood was promoted on Sunday after beginning the year in Wilmington. (45:30) The NCAA Baseball Tournament begins on Friday and Maryland will begin regional play in Winston Salem, NC. Matt Noble, the Voice of Terps Baseball, previews what lies ahead for UMD on their road to the College World Series. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Since the very beginning of the NHS, GP surgeries have been, in effect, businesses with contracts to do the work the Health Service needs. But in recent decades, patient numbers have grown, surgeries have become larger and the services offered more varied. Many GP surgeries now employ administrative staff, nurses, physiotherapists and paramedics, as well as doctors. What's it like to be a clinician and run a small business at the same time? What are the pressures? How do you get the books to balance? And how do you attract more people to join one of the front lines of the NHS? Evan Davis and guests discuss. GUESTS Dr. John Lynch, GP Partner, Framfield House Surgery, Woodbridge Suffolk Dr. Matt Noble, GP Partner, GP@hand, Bablyon Health a 'digital first' practice Dr. Yazmin Razak, Single GP practitioner, North Kensington and Dr. Rebecca Rosen, Senior Fellow, Health Policy at the Nuffield Trust and part-time GP, South London Producers: Julie Ball and Kirsteen Knight Researcher: Louise Byrne Sound Engineers: Graham Puddifoot and Rod Farquhar Editor: Simon Watts
The Nats were crushed 8-1 at fellow last place Cincinnati to drop them to 0-4 on the road trip. Al begins the conversation with the good news that pitching prospect Cole Henry is being promoted to AAA Rochester. Will he get called up to Washington this year? (08:02) The offensive futility continued in this game as the scoreless inning streak eclipsed 27. Josh Bell was the only source for runs as he hit a solo HR, that was aided by the Ballpark's dimensions. (12:15) Joan Adon right away allowed a 3 run HR to Joey Votto, but that was all he gave up in the loss. He walked as many as a he struck out, and Al points out his alarming walk rate per nine innings. (16:07) Paolo Espino yet again was used in mop up duty as he threw a scoreless bottom of the 8th. His ERA is a very impressive 2.19 and it is mystifying why he isn't being used in more high leverage spots. Why? (27:01) Matt Noble from the Maryland Baseball Network previews the first ever NCAA Baseball Tournament Regional that will be held in College Park, MD. The Terps will face LIU on Friday night in the double elimination event. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Nats lost 9-4 to the Dodgers despite out-hitting their opponents. Al recaps the sixth consecutive LA victory in Navy Yard as Josiah Gray only lasted three innings and his ERA has ballooned to 5.34. What's up with the continued trend of him giving up so many homers? (10:41) The Nationals only scored four runs off of ten hits and Al puts into perspective the state of the offense compared to this visiting team. Nelson Cruz had his first three hit game since coming to Washington as his average is now to .219, much higher than his .155 when April concluded. (20:04) It was a busy Tuesday night for the organization as both Stephen Strasburg and Joe Ross made minor league rehab starts. Al runs through Strasburg's night in Fredericksburg and Ross' appearance with AA Harrisburg. The concluding segment is an update on the latest report regarding the contractual futures of Mike Rizzo and Davey Martinez. (31:01) Matt Noble from the Maryland Baseball Network gives us an update on the Big The Champion Maryland Terrapins as the Conference Tournament is this week. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode we talk to Matt Noble, the founder of Toronto Vegetarian Food Bank, a volunteer-powered charity that has served over 250,000 meals worth of whole-food plant-based groceries to people struggling with poverty and food insecurity. We learn about the importance and operation of a vegetarian food bank and delve into a deeper discussion on social justice, food insecurity and policy. Food security represents a state in which food is available, accessible, and affordable such that there is physical and economic access to sufficient food to meet dietary needs for a productive and healthy life. There is often the concern that a vegetarian or vegan dietary pattern is expensive and out of the price range for those with food insecurity. Matt discusses these concerns, the challenges, the current situation, and what he believes could help potentially address these issues.Matt also shares some news about exciting initiatives, he and his team are working on, such as veganic agriculture and education. Toronto Vegetarian Food Bank will be breaking ground on a new project – The Veg Food Bank Farm – in partnership with Piebird Farm Sanctuary in the Summer of 2021. WONDERLAND is a “master class” in culture change. Podcast co-hosts Bridgit Antoinette Evans and Tracy Van Slyke apply their experience and perspective from careers spent at the intersection of social justice and entertainment to uncover the truth about the stories we’re telling as a country, on TV, in movies and throughout pop culture mediums. Season 2: WONDERLAND @ FRANK Have you ever wondered: How has the culture change field changed over the last few years? How can we bring our full selves — personally and professionally — to this multifaceted, emotional, and strategic work that we call culture change? How are pop culture fandoms an unexpected force in the 2020 election season? How are artists re-imagining and building new pipelines that center the innovation of historically excluded artists in the entertainment industry? Well we did! In this special micro-season of WONDERLAND, each of the four episodes features a talk by a culture change leader given at frank, an annual storytelling and communications gathering. Hader and Berg are nominated together for Best Comedy Writing and as producers for Best Comedy Series, while Hader also earned nominations for Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Directing. Berg says the two creators were meeting at a diner when Hader said, “What if I was a hit man?’ My reaction was ‘I hate that. There are more hit-men on TV than the real world.’ But very quickly we came up with the idea of him wanting to be an actor. A hit man has to be anonymous, live in the shadows and cut off from their emotions. An actor has to live in the light, access their emotions and divulge their inner truth. It started to become really interesting. A guy caught between two worlds. In order to do one thing well; he has to put himself at risk in the other world.” Follow Gold Derby on Facebook and Twitter.

It’s truly a sight to behold, that’s right, it’s time to ski the K12, dude with Short Time Shots, a look back at the day’s college scores and more with me, Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant. No, I didn’t learn English by watching the Wide World of Sports. At the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Delaware, second-ranked Ohio State trounced Princeton 39-0 on the eve of the Beast of the East. Key match there was at 149 pounds where Ke-Shawn Hayes knocked off All-American Matthew Kolodzik of Princeton 2-0 at 149 on the strength of an escape and riding time. The Buckeyes had six bonus point victories. Prior to the bout, we had a women’s freestyle dual where Campbellsville topped the University of the Cumberlands 35-11. Why? Well, following Presbyterian’s lead, the folks in Delaware are showing their local administrators men’s and women’s wrestling. Could we see the Fightin’ Blue Hens with wrestling once again? Whatever it is, they have no idea what the street value of this mountain is. Out in Lincoln, sixth-ranked NC State won basically every toss up and came into the Devanney Center and spanked No. 12 Nebraska 29-3. It started with Hayden Hidlay’s 6-3 win over Tyler Berger at 157 pounds and continued on with close but solid wins from Daniel Bullard at 174, Pete Renda at 184, Tommy Cox at 125 and Beau Donahue ripping victory away from Collin Purinton 11-10 at 149. Donahue trailed 7-1 at one point. He scored three third-period takedowns to basically sum up how the day went for both teams. Donahue also said he didn’t like all the extra fat from fried bacon, so he boiled it. Out west, Northwestern has quietly improved to 6-0 after wins against Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield. Against the Runners, the Wildcats won seven out of 10 bouts including bonus victories from Sebastian Rivera, Ryan Deakin, Johnny Sebastian, Mitch Sliga and Conan Jennings. By the way, I know two Conan’s who wrestled -- they were both heavyweights. I guess their parents knew something waaaay ahead of time. It’s got raisins in it, you like raisins. The Wildcats beat Cal Poly 30-8 in the nightcap. Would you mind if I asked out Beth? Utah Valley picked up a Big 12 win over North Dakota State, stopping the Bison 26-13 in Orem. Notable wins registered from the Wolverines Demetrius Romero at 165, Dustin Dennison and heavyweight and Taylor Lamont at 125 pounds. Romero, a transfer from Boise State after that school ducked and covered after dropping wrestling last season, topped nationally ranked Andrew Fogarty 5-3 in sudden victory. Both teams were receiving votes in this past week’s NWCA Division I Coaches Poll and both teams WANT THEIR TWO DOLLARS! Chris Lyons and Tyler Ortmann’s victories at 197 and 285 gave Cornell College a 23-15 come-from-behind win over Augustana -- the one in Illinois -- on Friday. The win is the Rams’ first since head coach Mike Duroe was revealed to be fighting brain cancer. Check out his gofundme page. We’re with you coach Duroe. Nationally ranked Matt Noble, Raymond Jazikoff and Blaise Benderoth picked up bonus victories in the final “home” dual of the season for NYU as the Bobcats topped the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 32-16. We say home because the match was held at the New York Athletic Club, which is just three miles from NYU’s Manhattan campus. MSOE, that’s the Milwaukee School of Engineering won its first dual of the year, winning six bouts in the middle to top Concordia -- the one in Wisconsin -- 27-23. Coach Matt Zwaschka’s Raiders were also added by two forfeits. Missouri Valley 3-0 including 27-15 win over Williams Baptist at the WBC Eagle Duals hosted by Williams Baptist. The Vikings topped Brewton-Parker 41-3 and Bacone 51-3. WBC’s Demetrius Thomas and Jaitlan Pitts each went 3-0 with 3 falls for Williams Baptist. Also in the NAIA, Life beat Reinhardt 29-16 and Menlo beat Embry-Riddle 23-20. Out in Rocklin, California, Emmanuel College went 3-0 at the Women’s West Coast Tournament of Champions, beating Grays Harbor 40-5, Southern Oregon 40-7 and Eastern Oregon 45-4. Individual tournament comes on Saturday. That’s all from the base of Mount Brodie where the once proud champion, Lane Meyer, is now a study in mopishness.
