The Nats ended their five game skid on Saturday afternoon, but the major news of the day came beforehand. Mark (From Wrigley Field) & Al dive into the shocking news that CJ Abrams was optioned to the minors and will not play the rest of the season. There were reports that Abrams was out at a Chicago casino until 8AM on Friday morning, just a handful hours prior to 1st Pitch. Abrams will spend the next week at the team's facility in West Palm Beach since AAA-Rochester's season ends on Sunday. (24:00) Almost lost in the shuffle from the busy Saturday, MacKenzie Gore took a no hitter into the bottom of the 7th. Gore struck out nine Cubs and navigated through a trio of walks issued. His ERA is at 4.04 and he has one start remaining next week in D.C. (30:00) Five Washington hitters had multiple hits in the win. Joey Gallo hit his second HR of the series and he now is up to nine on the season, a far cry from last season's 23 homers with the Twins. (34:00) Kyle Finnegan pitched the 9th and it was his first appearance in a week. The Nats are at 69 victories and need to go 3-4 down the stretch to exceed last season's win total. For the first time in almost three years, the Nationals are over .500 on the season as they now are 18-17 after shutting out the visiting Orioles 3-0 on Tuesday night. Mark & Al put in perspective just how long it has been since the team has had a winning record, which is all the way back in early July 2021. Kyle Finnegan notched his 12th save of the season, which leads all of baseball. (18:00) The Nats drew six walks and collected six hits in the victory. What stood out the most on Tuesday was that they stole four bases and three of them came against Baltimore starter Corbin Burnes. (24:10) Victor Robles returned to the active roster, but Jacob Young got the start in CF. Davey Martinez mentioned that Robles might see action in RF as Young has played well this season. The San Francisco Giants needed a spark badly, and they got it from 22-year-old rookie Kyle Harrison. Harrison dominated the Rockies over seven shutout innings in Denver, becoming one of only a handful of SF Giants pitchers to have such a good outing at Coors Field. Harrison's early-season performance has been one of the best stories of the year so far for the Giants. His ERA now sits in the low 3.00s. LaMonte Wade Jr. has been another great story, as he had a huge night in the 5-0 win, upping his walk rate and on-base percentage to the best in MLB (min. 100 plate appearances). Elsewhere, Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi spoke on the team's very disappointing early-season struggles. Rosario was signed during Spring Training to a minor league deal after playing the past few years in Atlanta. (9:30) Keibert Ruiz also went 0 for 3 and is hitting .143 so far. Game 1 featured a great pitchers' duel between former Cardinal Jack Flaherty and Kyle Gibson, who traversed seven innings to continue his streak of innings hoarding. His ERA is now below 4.00 as Gibby has been just what the doctor ordered for this rotation. Flaherty, of course, shoved the Cardinals into oblivion while setting a new career high in strikeouts. Fortunately, though, the Redbirds handled another former Cardinal pitcher in order to steal Game 1 away from the Tigers late. Game 2, though, didn't go the Cardinals' way. On the final day of play this season at Nationals Park, the Nats and Braves split the Sunday doubleheader. Mark & Al open with Jackson Rutledge coming away with his 1st career MLB victory in his 3rd start since getting called up. Rutledge went the minimum 5 IP and is expected to face Atlanta again next weekend. (08:00) Lane Thomas reached the 20/20 plateau and is the first player in franchise history to accomplish that feat since Bryce Harper in 2016. (16:10) Jacob Young had an excellent Game 1 as he had multiple RBI hits and a great catch to rob Ronald Acuna Jr. Young was recognized pregame for winning the "Nationals Way Award". (23:00) Joan Adon took the loss in Game 2 as he allowed 4 runs and issued 4 walks. His ERA in 4 September starts is at 7.23 but he likely will pitch in Atlanta for the final series. (30:00) The Nats have a 2 game series this week in Baltimore and the Orioles are close to clinching the AL East. The Nats lost 5-1 in Pittsburgh on Tuesday evening for their 80th loss of the season. Mark & Al begin with the news that Jackson Rutledge, RHP selected in the 1st Round of the 2019 Draft, will make his MLB debut on Wednesday night. His ERA this season is 3.71 and it comes through stints at Harrisburg and Rochester. His road to "The Show" has been a bumpy one, but lets see how beautiful it turns out. (11:15) Joan Adon had another no so good outing as he allowed 4 runs in as many innings on 93 pitches. The worst part was the 6 walks that he issued (1 intentional) and at least two Pirates reached base every frame. (23:00) Al takes issue with certain players who are not receiving playing time during this final month. Jake Alu has not played yet in Pittsburgh and is hitting .229 overall in his late season audition. (27:40) Hear more details on our upcoming Podcast Party at Walter's. The Nats outlasted the 1st place Dodgers in extra innings for a 7-6 victory on Saturday afternoon following a 4+ hour rain delay. Mark & Al wonder if Jake Irvin is sneakily the best story of the franchise's season after he threw another solid outing on the mound. His ERA is at 4.20; which is a far improvement from when he last faced LA in late May (5.67 ERA). (13:40) Lane Thomas returned after sitting out all week due to an ailing back and homered for the fourth consecutive game that he's played in. Thomas now has 24 HRs, which is by far the most on the team (Ruiz in 2nd place with 16 HRs). (19:45) Lost in the shuffle of all the organizational news this week was that Luis Garcia returned to Washington after spending August in AAA. Garcia on Saturday came through with a RBI single his 2nd game back from Rochester. (32:00) MacKenzie Gore's season was effectively ended this weekend as he was placed on the IL due to blisters. The Nats hung on 10-7 over Boston to take the series rubber match on Thursday afternoon. Mark & Al put in perspective what the victory symbolizes as they won their 55th game of the season, which equals last year's output with forty games still remaining. Washington has won 6 of their past 8 series and are 6 games over .500 since the All Star Break. (11:30) The offense broke out against Chris Sale to reach double digit runs and saw contributions from all across the lineup. Joey Menses had a pair of doubles that led to a 5 RBI afternoon. Keibert Ruiz reached base 5 times as the DH too see his scorching August continue. Other top contributors included Riley Adams, Stone Garrett, and Jeter Downs. (18:25) Patrick Corbin pitched well as he only allowed 1 run in 6 IP. Coming off a start where he issued 7 walks, on Thursday he didn't throw any "Ball Fours". His ERA is at 4.71, which is the lowest it has been since mid May. (27:20) The rout almost turned into a nightmare as Robert Garcia allowed 6 runs in less than an inning; which included a Grand Slam. This led to Davey Martinez having to use Hunter Harvey and Kyle Finnegan despite an earlier 9-1 lead. (31:20) This weekend is an odd 3 game series as the Phillies will be in D.C. on Friday and Saturday, but the finale will be Sunday night in Williamsport, PA to coincide with the Little League World Series. His ERA is now up to 4.62 and continuing to trend upward. (22:30) Davey Martinez announced pregame that Joan Adon will join the rotation and it will for the time include six starters. Ruiz has struggled at the plate this season, but did have six hits on the two city road trip. (10:38) The bullpen pitched well, other than Hunter Harvey who blew the save in the 9th. The best news of the night was Mason Thompson who threw his 5th consecutive scoreless outing. His ERA entering June was 4.76 and now it is down to 3.93. Props are given to Carl Edwards Jr. who was able to blank the Astros in the bottom of the 10th to preserve the 3 run victory. LaMonte Wade Jr., Thairo Estrada, and J.D. Davis are legitimately having All-Star caliber seasons. Then you add in established producers like Joc Pederson, Michael Conforto, and Mitch Haniger, and mix in some youth with the likes of Patrick Bailey and Casey Schmitt, and it's easy to understand that this is a deep and dangerous lineup when at full strength, as we saw last night. But the SF Giants really should've scored more runs. The Giants' strikeout issues are examined, as are their numbers with runners in "scoring position." A breakdown on why statistics with "runners in scoring position" is really not that important is also given. But also: the Giants have done better in those situations than they've done when runners aren't on second and/or third.Lastly, the SF Giants' pitching is discussed. Once again they won a bullpen game started by John Brebbia. Sean Manaea took down the bulk of the innings, and he pitched better than his final line would indicate. Over his last four appearances, all out of the bullpen, he's struck out a third of the batters he's faced and has a walk rate of just 7%. His ERA and FIP are sparkling over those last four outings, so this bullpen game with Manaea picking up bulk innings thing is working out well for the Giants.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The Nats lost their fourth in a row on Saturday; a 6-4 defeat at the hands of visiting Cleveland, that began late after a nearly two hour rain delay on Jackie Robinson Day. Mark & Al discuss how the lineup gave Chad Kuhl an early 3-0 1st inning lead, but that did not last. Hear the gruesome stats of how much the offense has struggled this season as the game reaches the later frames. (08:00) Many fans have been upset that Stone Garrett has disappeared from recent lineup cards. Mark asked Davey Martinez about Stone prior to Saturday's game and here's a hint: It has to do pitching match-ups. (22:00) Kuhl did not make through five innings and had a difficult outing. His ERA is at 8.59 and has not pitched well in any of his three starts so far. Might he be this season's version of Aaron Sanchez? The Nats three game win streak came to a screeching halt in a 12-2 loss down in Miami. Al & Mark though do not begin with the game, but with the pregame confirmation that Stephen Strasburg will take the mound on Thursday night at the Marlins. He has not pitched for Washington since June 1st of last season. (13:06) Joan Adon was hit hard early and often as he allowed eight runs in three plus frames. His ERA is above 6.00 right as Strasburg is returning to the rotation and so it begs the question... Will Adon be sent down to the minors? Who starts on Sunday? (23:45) Luis Garcia homered on an evening that the offense did not do much against Edward Cabrera, as his tater traveled a distance of over 400 feet. What are reasonable expectations for Garcia at the plate now that he has seemingly been called up for good? Lane Thomas had two hits on Tuesday while occupying the second spot in the order and our antennas are on to see if he quietly is taking over in CF for Victor Robles. (35:55) Josh Whetzel, the voice of the Rochester Red Wings, gives an update on the Nationals AAA affiliate after their very busy weekend that saw Stephen Strasburg, Cade Cavalli, and Cole Henry all succesfully take the mound. The Nats staged a late rally against the Reds bullpen to emerge with a 10-8 win on Saturday. Al recaps the victory as Juan Soto homered twice, giving him three dingers this series. The last time Soto had a multi homer game? Last September.... also at the Great American Ballpark. (06:25) Luis Garcia had a huge day while batting in the 9th spot as he had three hits, four RBIs, including a crucial 2 run single for 9th inning insurance. Maikel Franco also had a solid day and Al addresses where his stock is at as the trade deadline is under two months away. (16:01) Erick Fedde had a second straight poor outing as he did not last five innings and allowed seven hits. His ERA a week ago was 3.55 and after the past two starts, it now sits at 4.88. Speaking of ERA, a scoreless inning by Paolo Espino puts him at 2.10.... PITCH PAOLO IN MORE HIGH LEVERAGE SPOTS! (25:47) Cade Cavalli threw a complete game for Rochester and struck out 10 in the process. It is starting to look more and more likely that he will be promoted to Washington at some point this season. Al concludes by relaying the news that Stephen Strasburg was given a locker in Cincinnati, a good sign that he will be joining the rotation soon. Learn more about your ad choices. The Nats were crushed 8-1 at fellow last place Cincinnati to drop them to 0-4 on the road trip. Al begins the conversation with the good news that pitching prospect Cole Henry is being promoted to AAA Rochester. Will he get called up to Washington this year? (08:02) The offensive futility continued in this game as the scoreless inning streak eclipsed 27. Josh Bell was the only source for runs as he hit a solo HR, that was aided by the Ballpark's dimensions. (12:15) Joan Adon right away allowed a 3 run HR to Joey Votto, but that was all he gave up in the loss. He walked as many as a he struck out, and Al points out his alarming walk rate per nine innings. (16:07) Paolo Espino yet again was used in mop up duty as he threw a scoreless bottom of the 8th. His ERA is a very impressive 2.19 and it is mystifying why he isn't being used in more high leverage spots. Why? He earned Pro Bowl recognition in 2019 after he had 73 receptions for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns with the Jaguars. Chark said a few other teams wanted to give him a long-term deal, but he chose to sign in Detroit because of the fit with a team that desperately needs a deep threat at receiver. Brey said 11th-seeded Notre Dame’s flight landed at 4:30 a.m. About 13 hours later, the team had a brief walkthrough at Viejas Arena. Thatcher Demko stopped 34 shots for the Canucks. Vancouver pushed in the third, outshooting the Red Wings 14-4 in the period and pulling Demko with 2:23 left on the game clock. The Red Wings road trip continues on Saturday night at the expansion Seattle Kraken. MLB – Major League Baseball – Spring Training Yesterday Chicago White Sox (ss) 4, Chicago Cubs (ss) 3 – F/7                            Mesa, AZ Chicago White Sox (ss) 5, Chicago Cubs (ss) 2 – F/7                            Glendale, AZ Today Philadelphia Phillies at Detroit Tigers, 1:05 p.m. Chicago Cubs at San Francisco Giants, 10:05 p.m. MLB – Tigers agree to 2-year deal with LHP Andrew Chafin Left-hander Andrew Chafin and the Tigers finalized a $13 million, two-year contract, giving Detroit one of the top relief pitchers on the free agent market. Chafin gets a $1 million signing bonus, $5.5 million this season and $6.5 million in 2023. The 31-year-old had a 1.83 ERA with a career-high five saves and 64 strikeouts in 71 games in 2021, splitting the season with the Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics. His ERA ranked No. 5 in the majors among relievers and he ranked among baseball’s leaders in opponents’ on-base and slugging percentage and opponents’ slugging percentage. MLB – AP sources: Cubs add Villar, Givens in flurry of moves The Chicago Cubs stayed busy, agreeing to contracts with infielder Jonathan Villar and pitchers Mychal Givens, Daniel Norris and Robert Gsellman. The Cubs also finalized right-hander Chris Martin’s one-year deal and placed left-hander Brad Wieck on the 60-day injured list with a left elbow strain. The additions are the latest in a flurry of moves for the Cubs since they opened spring training — especially on the pitching side. There is concern across the majors about pitching depth with baseball’s adjusted schedule after the lockout. MLB – Cubs’ Hendricks eyes return to form coming off rough season Kyle Hendricks hopes to return to the form that made him one of the Chicago Cubs’ most reliable pitchers in recent years. The team is counting on the veteran right-hander to do just that. The 32-year-old right-hander won 14 games last season to match his second-highest total. Otherwise, it was by far his worst year. Hendricks’ ERA leaped from 2.88 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season to a career-worst 4.77. The major league-leading 200 hits were the most he has allowed. So were the 31 homers, a big jump for someone who had never given up more than 22. With 131 strikeouts and 44 walks, his strikeout-to-walk ratio was below 3.00 for the first time — a big drop from his NL-leading mark of 8.0 in 2020. NCAA – NTSB: 13-year-old drove pickup in Texas crash that killed 9 A National Transportation Safety Board spokesman says a 13-year-old was driving the pickup truck that struck a van in West Texas in a fiery collision that killed nine people. NTSB Vice Chairman Bruce Landsberg said Thursday the truck’s left front tire, which was a spare tire, also blew out before impact. One must be 14 in Texas to start taking classroom courses for a learner’s license and 15 to receive that provisional license to drive with an instructor or licensed adult in the vehicle. The pickup crossed into the opposite lane on a darkened, two-lane highway before colliding head-on with a van, killing the boy, a man traveling with him, six New Mexico college students and a golf coach. NFL – Lions sign receiver DJ Chark to $10 million, 1-year contract The Detroit Lions signed wide receiver DJ Chark to a $10 million, one-year contract. Detroit made a short-term investment for a former Pro Bowl player coming off an injury-shortened season. A broken ankle limited Chark to four games last season in Jacksonville. NFL – AP source: Raiders acquiring Davante Adams from Packers The Las Vegas Raiders are making a blockbuster move to keep up in the AFC West, acquiring All-Pro receiver Davante Adams from the Green Bay Packers. A person familiar with the move said Thursday the Raiders are sending the No. 22 overall pick in the April draft and additional compensation to the Packers to reunite Adams with his college quarterback, Derek Carr. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been announced. NFL Network reported that Adams has agreed to a new five-year deal with the Raiders that will pay him $141.25 million in the richest deal ever for a wide receiver. Golf – Sheriff: Workers maybe sparked country club fire with torch Surveillance camera footage shows maintenance workers using a propane torch prior to a blaze that destroyed a century-old clubhouse at a suburban Detroit country club. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the Oakland Hills Country Club has estimated the loss of the clubhouse at about $80 million. Sheriff Michael Bouchard said Thursday that the footage appears to show the workers attempting to douse a small fire in a wall using a garden hose on Feb. 17. Bouchard says investigators could have a preliminary finding on the cause of the fire next month. He did not mention the possibility of criminal charges. WNBA – Report: Griner’s arrest extended to May 19 Russia’s Tass news agency says a court near Moscow has announced it has extended the detention of WNBA star Brittney Griner until May 19.  Griner was detained at a Moscow airport, reportedly in mid-February, after Russian authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges as allegedly containing oil derived from cannabis.  The seven-time All-Star has won two Olympic gold medals with the U.S. and a WNBA championship with the Phoenix Mercury. With tremendous poise, a driven work ethic and an upper 90's fastball he is one of the highest rated amateur athletes eligible for this year's draft. Projections put him in the top 60-70s players overall which could make him one of the highest drafted DIII player ever joining MLB All Stars Billy Wagner who was selected 12th overall in 1993 and 2007 second round pick Jordan Zimmerman. The numbers he put up on the mound at Chapman were phenomenal. Over the past two seasons he amassed 83 innings and only allowed 48 hits with 118 strikeouts. His ERA was a teeny tiny 1.08. The knock against Nick is that those numbers were put up against lesser competition. Nevertheless, Garcia isn’t completely barren of big game experience. He helped the Panthers to the DIII baseball title in 2019 and pitched in the Cape Cod League last summer where held his own against the ilk of players from nation. He’s proved that he doesn’t discriminate against DIII batters. If you’re a division one he has no problem striking you out either.

The Cubs swept the Mets behind Victor Caratini's 2 home runs off Jacob deGrom. Looking at the number, he's really filled in nicely during Willson Contreras' absence.Kevin Newman had his second 4-hit game of the week, as the Pirates continue to catch a glimpse of their future core. Hyun-Jin Ryu is feeling the dog days of August, but he's human after all. His ERA has "ballooned" to a 2.35 - something that his peripheral stats have foreshadowed all year. Rougned Odor is basically playing for his job at this point; the Rangers expect more production out of 2B, and they have a young kid (Nick Solak) waiting in the wings who could replace him. All this (and more), plus a full recap of every game!

Few composers dominate a genre of music as completely as did Scott Joplin. From the publication of his iconic Maple Leaf Rag in 1899 onward his ragtime compositions came to serve as the soundtrack of his age. Yet Joplin aspired to be recognized not just as a successful writer of popular tunes but as a respected composer of classical music, an ambition that led him to write a ballet and two operas. In a new edition of his biography of Scott Joplin, King of Ragtime: Scott Joplin and His Era, the eminent ragtime scholar Ed Berlin reveals many new details that sharpen our understanding of Joplin's life and the times in which it was lived. Tracing his life from his childhood in rural Texas to his death in New York City in 1917, he describes Joplin's career as a musician and composer, setting it within the context of an African American community seeking to define its place within American society. Through his extensive research, Berlin sheds new light on Joplin's personal life, his business affairs, and the public reception of his music, helping us to better understand the impact and legacy of this great American artist.
