What if the biggest challenge in mining leadership isn't strategy, production, or policy — but the brain? In this episode of Mining Minds, David Watson, founder of NeuroLead, joins us in the studio for a powerful conversation about what it truly means to lead — starting with yourself. From humble beginnings in Australia to the iron ore boom, David shares his journey from carpenter to supervisor to breaking point — and how a deep dive into the neuroscience of leadership transformed not only his career but his life. This episode unpacks cognitive bias, burnout, trauma, identity, and the toxic validation cycle that many high performers quietly live in. David explains how the brain is wired to maximize rewards, minimize threats, and conserve energy — and how those shortcuts can either elevate or sabotage leaders. We dive into why traditional leadership training often misses the mark, why credibility matters more than PowerPoint slides, and why self-awareness is the foundation of influence. David also shares how hitting "static mode," creating flow, and deliberately repairing mental health are not luxuries — they are leadership responsibilities. Leadership is not about titles, motivation, or what you say in meetings. It is about how you show up every single day. If you feel stuck, distracted, or frustrated with your team or your progress, this conversation will challenge you to look in the mirror. Real leadership starts with leading yourself first. Your habits set the standard. Your consistency creates momentum. Your comfort level determines whether you grow or fall behind. This episode is for business owners, entrepreneurs, and leaders who want more control over their outcomes, stronger teams, and long term success regardless of the economic environment. When change hits—new systems, reorgs, layoffs, “strategic pivots”—most leaders obsess over the message: the email, the slide deck, the talking points. But your team doesn't just hear your words. They feel your nervous system. In this solo episode of the Mindful Leadership Podcast, host Pankaj Singh shares a raw story of a change conversation that technically “checked all the boxes” but still landed badly—and why the problem wasn't the strategy, it was his state. From there, he unpacks how your brain and body respond to threat, why stress quietly hijacks your leadership, and what it actually means to lead yourself first in moments of uncertainty. You'll learn three practical micro-practices you can use in 60–90 seconds to reset your system before a high-stakes conversation: the 4-7-8 CEO Reset, a quick BREATHE Through Burnout scan, and the 60-Second Compass Check. Then, Singh walks you through the same change announcement twice—once as an unregulated leader, and once as a grounded one—so you can feel the difference. Finally, he connects this work back to purpose and invites you to take the Purpose Factor® Assessment, so you can see what truly energizes you, what drains you, and how you're wired to lead—especially when the pressure is on.

In this episode, host Bradley Hamner sits down with Margaret C. Andrews, Harvard instructor and author of "Manage Yourself to Lead Others: Why Great Leadership Begins with Self-Understanding." Andrews shares her personal journey from being told she was "not self-aware" by a boss to becoming one of Harvard's most sought-after leadership instructors.Self-Understanding FrameworkMargaret's six key questions for deeper self-reflection:Who and whose thinking has influenced you as a leader? What situations and events have shaped you? What are your definitions of success (not society's or your parents')?What are your core values and how do they show up?How well do you understand your emotions and how they appear to others? What feedback have you received over time?Margaret's message aligns perfectly with first principle of Bradley's business architect framework: "Lead Yourself First." The conversation reinforces that before we can effectively lead others, we must first understand and manage ourselves - bridging the gap between our good intentions and our actual behaviors. Valarie Sandjivy, GenX, is an adaptive leadership mentor and business coach with over 20 years of experience. She is an engineer, master degree recipient, and business coach with over 20 years of corporate experience. As the founder of Ellipus, she helps executives, C-suite leaders, and entrepreneurs lead with greater emotional intelligence, adaptability, and innovation. Her coaching approach is built on four key pillars: leading self, leading others, emotional mastery, and soul care. Valarie's deep expertise in corporate structures, combined with personal transformation practices, enables her clients to break through limitations and achieve lasting, sustainable growth. Here are the topics we covered:0:00 Introduction2:02 Leading Ourselves4:55 Emotional Mastery 19:25 Gratitude & Forgiveness20:25 Challenges 23:56 Energies26:10 The 4 Pillars27:25 Harmony vs Balance32:07 Vulnerability35:13 Self-Care43:30 20-Something Self AdviceMemorable Quotes“How do we lead ourselves with deep insecurity within and still moving ahead?”“Not reacting means I can give a response – doesn't mean I don't have the emotion.”“Emotions go very fast – just give it a moment and I'll get back to you.””Ok, this experience I had with this person today was to show me that, then I'm getting the understanding of why they are showing me that, then I can process it.”“Do you know why being grateful and forgiveness work so well? It's because there is only one of us and we're all connected.”“We don't forgive for the other one – you do it for you.”“How can you lead and still manage the changes, pressure and uncertainty? We need to understand that like the seasons, change is a cycle. Uncertainty is being in the world of constant adaptation.”“The masculine energy is the structure and the feminine energy is the flow. We need to have both.”“The foundation of leadership is 4 pillars: lead yourself, lead others, emotional mastery, and self-care.”“Vulnerability means bringing back the humanness which is part of us.”“Everybody can lead themselves.”Here are the 3 Takeaways:Leading ourselves is very helpful when we are faced with new opportunities. Key is not listening to anybody who says “You're going to fail!” Emotional mastery is about our ability to keep going even when triggered and strong emotions are coming up. There are actions we can take: stop the conversation, don't engage with the emotions (doesn't mean it's not happening or stuffing the emotion down). You can park the emotion and come back to it. The emotions that come up (shame, anger, etc.) and the story we tell ourselves go together. We need to process the story we have (i.e. “not good enough”…) so the emotions don't build on each other and become bigger. There are layers to process the emotions and taking full responsibility for our emotions. One way to do this is with reflection: “What happened today in my interactions with others?” “What was the trigger?” “Where is the root of that?” Because we are all connected so when forgiving someone, we're forgiving ourselves, and forgiving the whole. If we understand that, processing can go faster. And gratitude is the same. Elisabeth White, Millennial, is an Agile (and coffee) aficionado with a passion for people and transformation. She has spent the past fifteen years guiding organizations on incredible Agile journeys—focusing on continuous improvements within leadership, culture, people, and processes. Her contagious personality and collaborative work ethic complement many team and office environments. White is a CEO by title, coach by profession, facilitator by trade, and Agilist at heart. Born and raised in the great state of Colorado (Go Broncos!), White is saving the world, one Agile journey at a time! Here are the topics we covered:0:00 Introduction1:48 Women leadership & change3:26 Emotions of strength for women6:02 Self leadership13:45 Self-doubt15:17 Leading with denial, blame, or shame16:53 Difficult conversations20:42 Authentic personas24:24 Human-centric wheel36:21 20-something adviceMemorable Quotes“When you put chaos (happens in any change) and crazy (false narrative about women's emotions) together there's a of a fear factor.”“It's important that when we show up to lead, we are first leading ourselves.”“I know how to move through this, I know how to help us, and I'm going to do it with such empathy and such care, that we're going to wow the crowd!”“We have to help people turn their hands so they realize there's different perspectives than one.”“If I can't show up authentically then I need to lead myself to somewhere else where I can.”“Self-doubt will destroy careers instead “pause for the cause” and ask yourself: Do I have clear direction here?”“Who's driving the bus and where's the bus going? If it's self-doubt we need to stop the bus and get a new driver!”“Am I actually showing up with empathy? Am I actually showing up with care?”“How do you think you showed up and was the response you received in alignment with that?”Here are the 3 Takeaways:1. The fact that women are so in-tuned with their emotions actually is the “secret sauce” for leading change. You need to overcome the false narratives to move through that change in a way other leaders can't. Women bring empathy and innate ability to be caretakers. Change is often tough and this gives women an ability to navigate brilliantly.2. Leading ourselves requires us to show up with a level of confidence and self-esteem to demonstrate we know what we're doing and are great leaders. It starts first by leading ourselves and being authentic. And if that doesn't quite “fit” respond with: “You're welcomed; you probably need a different perspective and that's probably why I'm here.”3. When considering making decisions you can “pause for the cause” and ask yourself these questions:Do I have clear direction here?Do I understand the purpose I serve here?Do I like it and am I ok with this purpose?Do I understand the why I'm here?Do I have a clear and safe path to follow?Do I have people to walk that path with me?If you answer yes, then make sure it's not self-doubt driving those choices instead of self-leadership. It's important to check-in to see who is in the driver's seat. Have an idea or tip? Send us a text! What does true leadership look like in today's business landscape? Dr. Kevin Mays reveals it begins not with controlling others, but with mastering yourself. His journey from aerospace engineering student to leadership consultant offers profound insights on building organizations that thrive beyond their founders.Dr. Mays challenges conventional wisdom about leadership, arguing that before you can effectively lead others, you must first understand your thought patterns and intentions. This self-awareness forms the foundation for creating environments where people feel empowered to bring their best selves to work. Many business owners fall victim to "founder syndrome," where their tight grip on every aspect of operations prevents growth and stifles talented employees. As Dr. Mays explains, "Too many leaders focus on the next quarter at the expense of the human beings actually doing the work." The result? Disengagement, high turnover of top talent, and ultimately, a business that depends entirely on its owner. For those looking toward retirement or succession planning, Dr. Mays offers practical advice: Document your processes, clarify roles and responsibilities, develop your team members, and most importantly - let go of control. "Your business should be working for you," he emphasizes, "not you working for your business."The conversation explores how business owners can shift from being "in the weeds" to taking a strategic position at the "top of the mountain," guiding the organization's future direction while empowering others to handle day-to-day operations. Welcome back to Promoted: Stop Doubting, Start Leading. In this episode, Karen gives some tough love—and practical wisdom—on one of the most important topics in any ambitious woman's career: getting promoted. Drawing on 25+ years of leadership experience, she breaks down the common mistakes that hold women back and outlines the essential shifts in behavior, mindset, and visibility that truly move the needle. If you're aiming for your next level, this episode is a must-listen.Key Takeaways:Seniority doesn't equal promotion. Time in a role doesn't guarantee advancement—impact and value do.Stop waiting—start owning. Promotions go to those who proactively take charge of their careers and plant seeds early.Visibility matters. It's not enough that your boss knows you're great. Build relationships across the organization so others do too.Invest in your future self. Start developing the skills your next job requires before you have it—be it public speaking, leadership, or strategy.Identity shift is non-negotiable. Let go of micromanaging and step into the mindset and behavior of the role you want before it's yours.“Be the person in the position that you want, do what they are doing, and then you get the role. Be. Do. Have.” - Karen GombaultPromotion isn't about entitlement—it's about energy, ownership, and evolution. Karen reminds us that it's not just about doing more, but becoming more. Step into your future now by showing up like the leader you aspire to be.Connect with Karen on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/karengombault/
