A conversation with Director of Presented Programming at the McCarter Theatre Center Paula Abreu halfway through her first season on the job!  Abreu took over from her predecessor Bill Lockwood who ran the program for 60 (yes, 60) years. We discuss the balance between honoring his legacy and introducing her own vision, some history about the McCarter Theatre Center, its connection to Princeton University, and its unique role as a cultural powerhouse. (The McCarter Theater Center is known not just as one of the country's leading regional theaters but also as a performing arts center presenting music, dance, spoken word and more)  We talk about the process behind planning a season of presented programming, ensuring diversity in art forms, and the representation of different communities, how the two strands of programming at the McCarter coordinate to create a cohesive season, and the importance of partnerships on and off campus in enhancing cultural experiences and creating deeper connections. We also discuss Abreu's journey from Brazil, experience as an industrial engineer, years of traveling and living around the world, on her masters' degree in performing arts administration,  subsequent work at NYC's Summer Stage and the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival and how all these diverse experiences inform her approach to programming. She also shares her approach to taking calculated risks in selecting shows and artists and the challenge of planning for both the immediate and future seasons.

Adit joins the show to talk about his career, love for cryptocurrency and more! ***********Unconventional in reel & real life, Adit Dileep is an actor, writer, producer and former investment banker.Born in Bangalore, India, his parents named him Aditya, which means The Sun, a name he aspires and grows towards. His family is made up of his mother and father and his older sister, Divya. At age two, his family moved to Singapore for his father's IT profession, and his mother gave up her position as a Journalist interviewing Indian Celebrities for India Today. His family moved throughout their eight years in Singapore, and moved again to the United States before Y2K.After settling in Bridgewater, New Jersey, Aditya, now 10 years old and fresh off the boat, had to start over. Upon learning that nobody on the school bus could pronounce this new boy's name, some student called him "Adit," and it stuck.Adit wanted to be an actor, but nobody really knew what he meant or why he had such crazy ideas. When it came time for him to go to college, his parents banned him from applying to art school and gave him three options: medicine, law or engineering. Never one to give in to authority, Adit chose business school, thinking he could learn how to be self-sufficient and run his own brand and company.Adit went on to be accepted in the Scholar's Program at NYU Stern Business School. Fun fact, Aziz Ansari followed the exact same path. While Aziz went straight into comedy after graduating, Adit took jobs in various different sectors within Marketing, Startups, Publishing and of course, Accounting and Finance. He graduated with a B.S. in Finance & Marketing and, still at a loss for how to make his dreams come true, took the highest paying job he could find in investment banking. Two years later, he saved up enough to quit and educate himself on the industry. Bright-eyed and idealistic, Adit printed out Yale Drama School's syllabus and crafted his own curriculum with reputable studios and teachers in New York City. Adit got his first big break with a role in Mystic India: The World Tour in 2015, voicing and narrating a script he wrote himself and performing around the U.S. and Europe. The show got Adit his first Manager, and a few Managers later he booked his first Equity show at Hudson Stage Company in NY, NY followed by long-term theatre contracts at the renown Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, MN and McCarter Theatre in Princeton, NJ. These projects earned Adit his first round of Agency meetings, and he couldn't be happier to sign with Artists & Representatives FKA Stone Manners Salners in NY and LA.He continues to work with Artists & Representatives to this day, along with MKSD Management and Innovative Artists NY for Commercial and VoiceOver.Theatre "Disgraced" (Guthrie Theatre, McCarter Theatre Center), "Animals Out of Paper"(Hudson Stage Company)TV Appearances on "Billions" (Showtime), "Succession" (HBO), "Law & Order: SVU" (NBC), "Brown Nation" (Netflix), "Shades of Blue" (NBC), "Deadbeat" (Hulu), "Breakfast in Bangalore" (Amazon Prime)Film "The Sound of Silence" (Sundance 2019) "Magic Hour" starring Miriam Shor (2020)Commercial Work: Coinmaster - with Emily Ratajkowski, American Express , Brooks Brothers, WeWork, Geico, Grammarly, Jersey Mike's, Denny's, Wealthsimple, JC Penney, Pandora, Google, Trojan, PWC, Optimum, Carl's Jr.

A conversation with my longtime friend and playwright of Our Dear Dead Drug Lord, Alexis Scheer. Alexis is one of the most intelligent people I know. She is as kind and caring and compassionate as she is articulate and witty. Her knowledge of herself and her experiences is refreshing and straight-up inspiring. I've wanted to sit down and put microphones in front of our mouths for a long time, but with her play currently running at WP Theatre off-Broadway - now seemed like the perfect time to go deep and break down what this experience has been like. This is Alexis' New York debut as a playwright and it is the very beginning of what I am certain will be a long and incredibly exciting career in this industry. Our conversation starts off with a quick recap of the history of this play and spirals into a dialogue about representation, spirituality, creative fulfillment, trust, relationships, and lands with a recent revelation about the "struggling artist" mentality. I have no doubt that you'll find a plethora of wisdom-nuggets that you'll carry with you. Alexis has a way of speaking about abstract topics in a way that's digestible and easy to grip on to. She inspires me to move through the world with more grace and trust that what I have to say is worth hearing. Alexis was named Rising Theatre Star by Improper Bostonian in the Boston's Best Issue and is currently featured on the Kilroys' List and Remezcla's 8 Exciting Latinx Playwrights. Plays include Our Dear Dead Drug Lord (world premiere Off-Broadway WP Theater/Second Stage; developed at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Off the Grid Theatre, and McCarter Theatre Center; Kilroys' List, featured finalist at HowlRound's LTC Carnaval of New Latinx Work, Relentless Award semi-finalist, Bay Area Playwrights Festival finalist, 50PP's Best Unproduced Latinx Plays, 50PP's Best Latinx Plays for College); Laughs in Spanish (developed at Boston Playwrights' Theatre and San Diego REP), Christina (developed at Cleveland Playhouse; Roe Green Award Winner) and Chosen (BCA She Said Festival, Sanguine Theatre's Playwrights' Week). She is a proud Miami native and New World School of the Arts alum, and holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from The Boston Conservatory and MFA in Playwriting from Boston University. She also moonlights as the Producing Artistic Director of award-winning fringe company, Off the Grid Theatre.  The Come Up is a podcast that holds space for honest conversations about the reality of being a growing artist in the entertainment industry today. The myth of "making it" tells us that our happiness and fulfillment is dependent on a specific outcome when the truth is that there is no moment of arrival - the journey is never ending. This podcast will serve as an archive of individual perspectives and a source of inspiration for anyone navigating their own creative path. 2002 Symposium: Assembling the Team: At its 3-day Musical Theatre Symposium in June of 2002, SDCF hosted a panel on assembling creative teams moderated by Arthur Bartow. Speakers included producers Marty Bell (Ragtime) and Sally Campbell Morse(Urinetown), choreographers Larry Fuller (Evita) and Daniel Pelzig (33 Variations), Roundabout Artistic Director Todd Haimes, directors Christopher Ashley (Memphis) and David Warren (Summer and Smoke), and composer Lucy Simon (The Secret Garden). These speakers provide case histories of collaborations that they put together that were either successful or dire failures, and include tales of Ragtime, the 1998 Revival of Cabaret,  Urinetown and the original collaboration on the Maltby/Shire musical Take Flight, which had a successful run at the McCarter Theatre Center in April of 2010 with a different creative team. Other topics include the role of the producer in initiating projects and finding good collaborations, the function of the director as part of a team, and the importance of workshops in the creative process for everyone involved.
