In this episode, Jennifer talks to Analisa Leaming about learning to separate your emotions from your thoughts, being willing to examine what is on the other side of fear, and using our bodies as the vessel through which feelings can pass. They both discuss what creativity means to them & the notion of embracing possibility over probability. Plus, Analisa shares tools from her work with the Paradox Process. About Analisa: Analisa Leaming is an actor/singer/coach/speaker/storyteller/risker-taker + perspective expander. (Not necessarily in that order.) She has appeared in the Broadway productions of School of Rock, Hello, Dolly!, The King and I, and On the Twentieth Century. Additionally, she has been seen regionally at the MUNY, KC Starlight, North Shore Music Theatre, Ogunquit Playhouse and Barrington Stage, to name a few. When not on stage you'll find her unraveling the query “How do we live the big, rich, beautiful life we desire independent of our résumé, bank account and society's definition of success?” As a coach + speaker she uses the Paradox Process to free artists from limiting beliefs and return to their power, wisdom and creativity. Analisa is also the creator and host of the podcast A Balancing Act. Her proudest creation yet, though, is her 2-year-old son, Gabey. Analisa's IG: @Analisaleaming Want to coach with Jennifer? More doubt and confusion! We are here for it. We are living it. We dig into it with Ali. She talks to us about growing up deeply Jewish and both the gifts and the questions she found on that path. We investigate the power of nature, long walks, and regular showers. And how the body holds all our secrets. As an actor, Ali has performed on Broadway and off, and in venues across the country including The Roundabout Theatre, The Guthrie Theater, The Old Globe, Cincinnati playhouse in the park, Fault Line Theatre, Barrington Stage and more. Ali loves movement theater and recently completed the international residency program with Frantic Assembly in London. As a painter, her saturated, rhythmic use of color to paint women's bodies and faces, describes the womxn up against herself. She questions the scope of femininity by capturing moments of rage, torture, complacency, joy, nostalgia, and desire. Ali is an expressionist with occasional abstract tendencies. Ali has taught art all over the world with Artists Striving To End Poverty, and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDs. Ali is a certified Yoga instructor specializing in Vinyasa, Yin, Hatha, hot yoga and Meditation. LEO ASH EVENS is a Pittsburgh born and bred actor with a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University. Upon signing with his legit agents, CGF Talent defined him as "an enigma". A dynamic song and dance man as well as voice-over artist, signing with Innovative Artists in 2012, Leo enagages his sexy rasp for both rock ’n roll and commercial voice-overs. Currently, he is the voice of Siemens Technology. In his 10th year with MTCA (Musical Theatre College Auditions), Leo has evolved from monologue coach to Assistant Director and is now a proud Co-Director and Co-Owner of the team with partners Ellen Lettrich (Founder), and Charlie Murphy. Leo loves guiding his students to trust their own work and their process, finding the right program and positioning themselves for success in the professional world. Broadway credits: Jesus Christ Superstar (debut); Shuffle Along…(standby for Brooks Ashmanskas, and later taking over the role) directed by George C. Wolfe, choreographed by Savion Glover; and the vacation swing for School of Rock, where he channeled a touch of David Bowie, Rod Stewart, and Jem of Jem and the Holograms in his spiky blonde wig. Leo's proudest role to date is the Emcee in Cabaret, winning Best Actor in the Houston Excellence Awards while performing at Houston TUTS. Leo later reprised his role at The Arvada Center in Denver, Colorado. It's the gritty roles that really ignite him. And in a close second place - playing the deliciously deplorable Black Stache in Peter and the Starcatcher. Leo’s had the honor of working with theatre legends Chita Rivera, Patti LuPone, Shirley Jones, and Audra McDonald. He treasured the world premiere play, Somewhere, starring Priscilla Lopez, at The Old Globe in San Diego, in which he originated the role of Jamie McRea. Off-Broadway, Leo originated roles in two premiere plays which have since successfully been published. Bobby in Finks by Joe Gilford and Pluto in Jasper in Deadland by Hunter Foster and Ryan Scott Oliver. Leo played Riff in West Side Story several times: for Alan Johnson (50th Anniversary Tour); Joey McNeely (London); as well as for Joshua Bergasse (Gypsy of The Year, Recording Academy Honors, Barrington Stage, and North Carolina Theatre). He is thrilled to be part of this legacy and pass it on through educational workshops. Maybe he'll even try his hand at directing it one day... Showbiz highlight: In 2016, Leo met his idol, The Great Lady of Comedy - Carol Burnett, after her show at The Beacon Theatre in NYC. Inspired by her hilarious, honest, and wry characters, he always admires her compassionate way of sharing herself with her audiences. Leo is the proud son of Earl and Amy, brother of Sarah, and Uncle of Violet! (He's gonna post some Instagram duos of himself and Violet soon - she'll steal your heart!) He gleaned his green thumb from his parents, and hence, time with his house plants, the community garden, and lush walks in Central Park near his apartment on the Upper West Side are a must! Someday soon, Leo wants to adopt a Wheaten Terrier. Special Episode #10: Look who's blown back into podcastville! I've come around again, and this time, I've brought a special guest - I'm so happy to introduce the young and talented Gillian Goldberg!I had the good fortune to catch Gillian in the Barrington Stage production of Barry Wyner's Calvin Berger a few years ago. (If you listened to The BMI Workshop Songbook Podcast, you might remember Neil Patrick Harris' performance of another song from that show, "It Just Wasn't Meant to Happen.")Gillian's wonderful performance in the role of high school student Bret in that production was indelibly imprinted in my mind, so when I needed someone to sing the role of a teen-aged girl for a demo, I knew who to call...A graduate of The Boston Conservatory (aka BoCo), she's played other musical theatre high school gals as well: Cassandra in Saved (at The Kansas City Repertory Theatre) and Candi in Zanna, Don't (at Speakeasy Stage Company in Boston.)Today, Gillian sings "Just Because," one of two spec songs I was commissioned to write to audition to be the composer of an upcoming new musical. I didn't end up getting the gig, but I did get this song!Originally conceived as a trio for Gillian's character and her two best friends, today Gillian sings a retooled solo version, and as a bonus, I play the original demo as well, which, in addition to Gillian, features Nikki James and Dana Steingold as the two friends, Liz Callaway as Gillian's offstage mother, and in the role of Peg's Mother, my neighbor, Darcy, in her musical theatre debut. :-)Other places you can find Gillian these days? Check out the fashion blog she co-writes, A Gal's Right 2 Style.Incidentally, if you are a teen-aged girl (or an actress who plays teen-aged girls) and would like to sing "Just Because," the sheet music is now available from my online music store. This episode was recorded on March 14, 2011.
Marin Mazzie talks about taking on the role of Diana Goodman in Broadway's "Next to Normal" and whether she and her co-star/husband Jason Danieley take their work home with them after the show. She also talks about her early professional experiences, including The Barn Theater in Michigan and An Evening Dinner Theatre in Westchester NY; appearing in the ultimately truncated national tour of "Doonesbury"; stepping into roles in the original productions of "Big River", "Into The Woods" and "And The World Goes Round"; her first opportunity to create a role, Clara in Sondheim and Lapine's "Passion", and having it created around her; the journey of "Ragtime" from Toronto to Broadway; her foray into the classics with Charles Mee's version of "The Trojan Women" for the site-specific company En Garde Arts; the differences between appearing in both "Kiss Me, Kate" and "Spamalot" in New York and London; and her forays into non-musical roles with "A Streetcar Named Desire" at Barrington Stage and "Enron" on Broadway -- and why she wants more opportunities to do more than just musicals. Original air date - September 8, 2010.
