This week we have some great stories for you as David and Sarah are joined by a couple of great guests: Amy Lewin, Senior Reporter at Sifted James Teodorini, European Partnerships Development Manager at Button Oliver Prill, CEO of Tide Megan Caywood, Global Head of Digital Strategy at Barclays We kick off the episode by taking a look at how British fintech booms as 2019 is set to be a record year for UK investment. To start us off, we have a soundbite from Jo Oliver, Partner at Octopus Ventures, commenting on the story. Jo explains why the trend of signinificant investment is likely to continue and why we shouldn't read too much into a 30% decline in investment deals. James Teodorini makes the point that only 15% of this investment is early stage and he'd like to see this figure increase, as this indicates that we're still seeing new entrants to the market. (4:35) Up next, JPMorgan's CEO is looking for the banks next acquisition, and they're expected to be targeting a US neobank. This sparks a built it vs. buy it debate, with the guests discussing the pros and cons of each, as well as a discussion about how open neobanks are to being acquired and much more. How do you transform traditional banks to compete in the digital banking battlefield? Essentially, how do you win? DR Leda Glyptis is hosting this very special debate, live from Money20/20 Europe. The debate will be held between two teams, Brear's Bears and Bates' Bulldogs. The teams are made up of banking and fintech experts, including: Team Brear’s Bears: * David Brear - CEO and Co-Founder 11:FS - Team Captain * Megan Caywood - Managing Director, Global Head of Digital Strateg at Barclays * Gabrielle Inzarillo - Director, FinTech, Plug and Play Tech Center * Edward Maslaveckas - Founder and CEO at Bud Team Bates’ Bulldogs: * Jason Bates - Deputy CEO & Chief Product Officer 11:FS - Team Captain * Simon Vans Colina - Engineer at Monzo * Kristian Luoma - Head of OP Lab at OP Financial Group * Joris Hensen - Founder and Co-Lead of Deutsche Bank API Program, Deutsche Bank AG Alright, here is the format of the debate: There will be four rounds, where the panel will be discussing the following: competition, tech, brand and culture. Each team will have one lead debater who will lead a 90-second pitch on that topic, after which point the floor is open for everyone to join in, and add their expertise or just generally smack talk the other side. First up, we have David Brear and Jason Bates taking on the topic of "who are the biggest competitors to traditional banks?" David is on the side of tech giants, while Jason is arguing for the challenger banks! David argues that in a fight, he would always take the side of the players with the best talent, biggest customer numbers and the brands that people actually trust. Jason's argument is that challenger banks can offer ten times better results for ten times lower cost, how could they not be the bigger threat? Tune in for interesting insights, some heated debates and the coronation of the official winner of The F'in Debate 2019! All this and so much more on today's show. DISCLAIMER: The debate was created and curated in partnership with Money20/20 for entertainment purposes only. Our hosts Simon and Jason are joined by three great guests: Joost Lobbes, Product Manager at Rabo Bank, and Diana Paredes, CEO of Suade Labs. First up, CYBG cans Virgin Money deal with Anthony Jenkins startup. The new owner of Virgin Money has canned a long-term deal with a digital banking start-up launched by Anthony Jenkins, the former Barclays chief executive. Not entirely unexpected, since David Duffy, CYBG's chief executive, had hinted since securing a £1.6bn deal to buy the bank that it was likely to use its own technology platform. Confirmation that CYBG is ditching the 10x deal may deal a blow to Mr Jenkins, who has been in talks with investors for several months about a substantial new funding round for his venture. Virgin Money is understood to have committed tens of millions of pounds to creating a digital platform with 10x's support, and CYBG's decision to terminate the deal is likely to trigger a sizeable payment to 10x. Fintech startup Revolut is in talks to raise $500M from Softbank. Several sources have told City A.M. that the deal is set to close early next year, as Revolut tries to launch its banking app in the US, one of fintech’s most notoriously hard to crack markets. Comes less than seven months since Revolut closed its last funding round at $250m, which valued the London startup at $1.7bn as a so-called unicorn company. Not known if previous backers such as Index Ventures, Draper Esprit and DST Global will sign on to this round. Softbank said earlier this year that it was looking to deploy around $200m into fintech from its $100bn Vision Fund, and was reported by Sky News to have explored a similar investment in UK challenger bank Oaknorth. We spoke to Emily Nicolle, the author of this article for City AM to give us her thoughts on this story. Digital bank Starling to roost on the high street. Digital bank Starling is heading to the high street, announcing a tie-up that will enable its personal and business customers to withdraw and deposit cash over the counter at all 11,500 Post Office branches nationwide. Despite falling cash use across the UK, the app-only challenger bank said it was responding to customer needs. “Our customers still want to pay in cash and take money out,” said Julian Sawyer, head of banking services at Starling Bank. “The Post Office has more outlets than all the other banks combined, so it became a very obvious channel to link up with.” The digital bank’s move to the high street comes as larger banks shift customers online, closing hundreds of high street bank branches and free-to-use cash machines in the process. We caught up with Megan Caywood at Xerocon yesterday to tell us more about this announcement and what it means for their users. Simple attracts Amazon exec as new CEO. US neo bank Simple has named a former Amazon executive as its new CEO, in a rare example of talent returning from Big Tech to the banking industry We interviewed the Co-Founder of Simple Bank, Shamir Karkal in ep. 254. David Hijirida moved from Washington Mutual to help build Amazon’s online payments business in 2007 before acting as a director of AWS. Hijirida takes over from Dickson Chu who was working as the interim chief executive of the bank after founding CEO Josh Reich who quit in May. Fluidly raises £5M in Series A Funding. Fluidly is an applied AI business that combines machine learning and financial modelling to automate the forecasting and management of cashflow for SMEs. The £5m Series A funding round was led by New York-based fintech investor Nyca Partners. Existing investors Octopus Ventures, Anthemis and tech angels including Simon Murdoch and Charlie Songhurst also participated in the latest financing round. We caught up with Fluidly CEO Caroline Plumb at Xerocon yesterday, to find out more about what this money will be used for. Alibaba sets new Singles Day record with more than $30.8BN in sales in 24 hours. Alibaba smashed through its Singles Day sales record on Sunday. The gross merchandise value (GMV) hit over $30.8 billion in sales in the 24-hour shopping event. That topped the $25.3 billion record set in 2017. Singles Day got off to a strong start with sales hitting $1 billion in one minute and 25 seconds. BofA faces trademark suit over Erica chatbot. Bank of America has been sued by a man over the use of the name "Erica" for its in-app AI-powered virtual assistant chatbot. Rolled out to BofA's millions of customers over the summer, Erica helps users with a host of simple transactions such as money transfers and balance enquiries. Erik Underwood registered his own virtual assistant, called E.R.I.C.A (electronic repetitious informational clone application) in Georgia in October 2010. PFM app Fintonic to fund interest-free deferred payments at Amazon. Financial management app Fintonic is collaborating with Amazon to provide Spanish clients with the option to fund interest fee purchases at the e-commerce store. Under the agreement, Fintonic's 500,000 Spanish users will be able to defer payments ranging between €200 and €1,000 for up to four months. Coming on to incredible music and an epic trailer we kick things off with insight into challenger banks. The UK’s digital banks may be profitable sooner than you think Monzo, Starling and Tandem all expect to have hit profitability by 2020 or sooner. The panel examines if Monzo can hit profitability so soon given losses quadrupling recently, Starling's profitability from new revenue streams like business bank accounts and marketplace partnerships, and Tandem acquiring 250K customers since the start of 2018. Next up Starling Bank ditching the purple for a new set of cards, cards for the bank's consumer accounts will be teal, while its business accounts will be turning navy blue. And all cards are portait. Just by like we have Megan Caywood of Starling fame in the audience to show it off. We move on to Snapchat shutting down Snapcash and giving the space over to Venmo. Snapchat will abandon the peer-to-peer payment space on August 30th. The service was powered by Square Cash. Snapcash gave Snapchat a way to get users to connect payment methods to the app, which were vital to the company’s aim to become a commerce platforms where you can shop without leaving the app. Launched in 2014, ahead of Venmo and Zelle but has ultimately lost customers to both companies. And finally the London team takes a look at what happened to celeb-endorsed cryptocurrencies. Heading over to Atlanta Doug and Sam kick things off with Rob Frohwein and Shannon Johnson on Uber and Venmo partnering to deliver a new payment experience. The four discuss Uber and Venmo are partnering to deliver a seamless new payment experience available with Uber and Uber Eats. More than 6M payments on Venmo mentioned “Uber” in their description over the past year, how big a deal the partnership is, how important it is that Venmo is offering bank-like solutions without being a bank, and Venmo's security. Next up, Kathry Petralia and Andrew Morries walk on stage to a great deal of applause, to discuss Facebook Google and others uniting to let customers transfer data between apps. They take a look at whether this is a bonus for start ups, what it means for privacy and data security and why Apple is conspicuously absent from this initiative. Howard Bush and Ginger Schemltzer are on stage next to discuss VISA MoneyGram and Visa Team preparing to deliver real-time global P2P, whether it's a digital and mobile payment option targeting milennials, if cash is still king, why the plan is starting with Mexico and the Philippines and where they'll go next. Joining us to discuss current developments in Open Banking and where we're headed from here are Louise Beaumont, Co-Chair of techUK's Open Banking & Payments Working Group and a member of the Open Banking Implementation Entitiy Working Group, Megan Caywood, Chief Platform Officer at Starling Bank, a UK digital bank differentiating through Open Banking, and Jamie Campbell, Head of Awareness at Bud, a fintech leveraging Open Banking to create new revenue streams for banks. In the episode, Jamie mentions the book Bud have published on Open Banking, available here. You may have noticed that we've recorded the last few episodes in the offices of Saxo Payments Banking Circle, a new utility layer for banking. I was recently involved in a report they coordinated on Open Banking and other trends, and how they're reshaping the industry, which I'll link to in the show notes. Our After Dark shows are always exciting and this one’s no different. In front of an amazing audience the panel kicks things off with Paypal’s new movements. M-Pesa wallet goes online thanks to a collaboration between Paypal and Safaricom. Meanwhile over in the USA, Paypal is making moves towards more traditional banking in a bid to connect those without bank accounts to the digital economy. Young coders might be avoiding London over Brexit fears. But is Brexit a real problem for the fintech space and are coders leaving or is the talent rush just slowing down? Andy Murray lobs over an interesting bit of fintech news by betting that British Fintech is going to a smash hit. But how big is he betting? Accenture released their wealth management report on the next era, focusing on Millennials. Despite all the good stats on what Millenials want, can a one-size-fits-all digital experience ever work? Amazon targets teens, the online bookshop-turned-retail-monolith wants to get to teenagers before the banks are able to. It’s a common tactic used to establish brand loyalty while consumers are young. Sweden turns against cashlessness amid fears it puts us at risk of attack, with 70% of Swedes wanting to retain some use of cash. But 40% of Britons say they can see themselves going completely cashless in the future. So why is there such a split? Square’s Cash App arrives in the UK, it’s a potential competitor to Venmo, but can it survive in the UK amongst platforms like Starling and Monzo? Rounding out the stories tonight, it turns out that the wild entrepreneur John McAfee is charging $105,000 per tweet promoting digital coins and Initial Coin Offerings. Yet another dodgy story on the man who had a very suspicious time in Belize with murdered neighbours and suspected drug dealers. His life is a movie deal waiting to happen. We hope you enjoyed the show! Subscribe so you never miss an episode, and if you want to show us some love then please leave a review on iTunes. We kicked off the show with a double whammy of Starling stories. Luckily we had Megan Caywood to tell us more. Firstly this one in CityAM announcing Starling's 4 new partners in their marketplace: Pensionbee, Wealthsimple, Habito and Kasko. Next we move onto Starling’s Settle Up feature which Megan explains as “A really easy way to make payments between friends”. Ross said he struggled to find the use case for this at first but now he properly gets it, and its design is excellent “I struggled at first to see this as a use case… but it’s awesome and design-wise it’s really nice”.  Moving on from Starling to their biggest rival, the team discuss this story from City AM - regarding Monzo's partnership with Moneybox via open banking APIs, which allows Monzo users to invest their cash by rounding up purchases to the nearest pound. From Monzo to Revolut, and ss with seemingly every Revolut CEO interview, this interview in the FT  got a lot of people talking on Fintech Insider News, our forum for discussion of the latest news and stories in the fintech world.Nikolay Storonsky talked to the FT about the long hours and high staff turnover at Revolut, claiming there is little room for work-life balance in a fast-growing start-up. However he also claims he has never come across a burnt-out employee, and pledges to pay for a two-week holiday for any of his staff who feels overwhelmed by the demands of their job. Interesting stuff...what are the chances someone takes him up on that pledge? The next story is one Simon described as "Giving me warm fuzzies" as The UK's FCA and the US' CFTC sign fintech pact. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) have signed an arrangement that commits the regulators to collaborating and supporting innovative firms through each other’s financial technology (FinTech) initiatives – LabCFTC and FCA Innovate. To summarise, Simon described the pact as “fist bumps over the Atlantic”. From one pact that definitely is happening, this one is less clear. In this story from CNBC, Amazon might have teamed up with the Bank of America for its lending programme. If Amazon are working with big banks to get into the lending space, should traditional players in this market be worried? In this next story they discuss a partnership that this time definitely is happening: Azlo, a digital banking startup targets gig economy workers is backed by BBVA. This story impressed the panel slightly more than the speculative Amazon murmurs, with Edward Berks calling it a "solid proposition". From a Spanish backed startup to a Canadian one that’s gaining momentum, is the news in Business Insider regarding robo advisor Wealthsimple's £37 million fund raise. Their business model heavily targets millennials - 80% of their clients are under 45 and 40% are first time investors. Is the age of robo-advisors coinciding with mellenials having more money to invest? Next up we reached the silly story part of the show now, starting with this story from Conservative Home explaining how Conservatives can use the blockchain for activism. This is a bizarre thought piece about a theoretical token called ConservativeCoin and indeed Megan summarised this well, stating that "it sounds like someone had too much time on their times". Continuing with the crypto theme, and setting up new tokens, CoinDesk broke the news this week that Steven Seagal Endorses Questionable 'Bitcoiin' ICO. Instead of kicking ass on screen, it seems the martial arts savant has taken to round-house kicking the blockchain world by endorsing Bitcoiin2Gen....the name alone had eyebrows raised! In a show packed full of good news, we chose one more to end on, this one in the Express regarding the Big Issue magazine seller who takes contactless and saw a huge boost to sales as a result. Big Issue seller Robin Fabian bought a contactless card reader to increase his sales after passers by repeatedly didn’t the have £2.50 in change to buy a magazine. He said the card reader paid for itself on the first day, and since then he estimates he's sold 200 extra copies. Hope you enjoy the show and don't forget to leave us a review on iTunes! Let us know your thoughts @FintechInsiders and join the discussion by signing up at Fintech Insider News. Special Guests: Edward Berks and Megan Caywood.

Megan Caywood is the Chief Platform Officer at Starling Bank, one of the UK's newest and most tech forward banks. Megan is responsible for the design and development of Starling's API strategy and the bank's marketplace, both of which we discuss in detail in today's conversation.   And what a timely conversation it is. PSD2 in Europe and Open Banking in the UK took effect on Saturday, January 13th, the day after we recorded this episode, making effective one of the most dramatic changes to the banking industry in decades.   Open data models, APIs and multi-party customer experience are core to Starling's model in the same way they are those of Google, Apple, Facebook and others. It's unclear how quickly the impact of Open Banking will be felt or exactly how the legislation will affect the market, but it could be transformational.   As always, connect with us on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or on our website at bankingthefuture.com.   If you like today's show, please subscribe on iTunes, or your podcast platform of choice, and leave us a review.   Thank you very much for joining us today, please welcome Megan Caywood.

In this episode: David and Simon are joined by the FT Alphaville's Kadhim Shubber, Fidor's Sophie Guibaud and Pete Townsend of Norio Ventures to discuss the top news stories of the last week. First up we discuss THAT Apple launch, how Apple's P2P capabilities are a little underwhelming, how Venmo's attempt to fight back against Apple Pay involves a very ugly debit card, and sticking with the theme we discuss Zelle's P2P mobile payments app that recently launched and what it means when banks club together to innovate. They also discuss whether fintech really is the fastest growing industry in the US, what it means for Jamie Dimon to slam bitcoin, is he just wrong or is it a distraction to cover up something else? Finally, they take on Monzo letting their customers decide fees for using ATMs abroad, whether 30% of bank jobs will be gone in 5 years as the CEO of Pandit claimed, and ANZ's restructuring to create 150 "startups", it sounds like nonsense but are they the first traditional bank to really understand how to be agile? Also on the show we have an exclusive interview with digital receipting startup Flux alongside Megan Cawood of Starling, all about their recent partnership and launch on Starling's Marketplace.
