On this episode of The ASHHRA Podcast, we delve into the current system of employee compensation. Hosts Bo and Luke are joined by guest speakers Rob Frohwein and Kathryn Petralia, co-founders of Keep Financial. They discuss the flaws in the traditional bi-weekly payment system and how it benefits payroll companies, banks, and intermediaries more than the employees and employers themselves. The conversation shifts towards the potential benefits of restructuring compensation to eliminate middlemen, save on fees, and take advantage of the time value of money. This shift could lead to increased employee retention, easier attraction of talent, and better overall performance. The current system, they argue, is not aligned with the way businesses operate or how employees manage their lifestyle. The focus of this episode is on moving towards flexible compensation, where employers can customize the size of compensation and employees can personalize it to fit their specific needs. The speakers emphasize that this shift is not about making employees millionaires, but about improving their financial position and providing them with more control over their compensation.

Today our roundtable crew share their personal tricks of the trade they employ to manage their budget, lower their expenses, and keep charge of their finances. Joining us on our roundtable is the mind behind the Own Your Money brand and Stacking Benjamins' partner in our Making Money Easy course, Belinda Rosenblum; Kevin Payne from the popular Family Money Adventure blog; and basement regular Len Penzo... from the aptly named Len Penzo dot com blog. After our contributors finish sharing their top finance tips, we'll give them a break while we shine some light on small businesses and what they've been experiencing this year. Helping us shine that spotlight is Kabbage co-founder, Kathryn Petralia. Kabbage was the second biggest PPP loan provider, and Kathryn will share the mistakes she's seen businesses make, what businesses should be doing right now, and what we can maybe expect in the future. We'll finish out the show with our Magnify Money segment - our caller Jambalaya wants to self-insure his health costs. He breaks his plan for his, and makes sure to let us know that he's otherwise healthy. Jambalaya asks for our seal of approval: is his plan sound, or, in his words, "should I keep it simple stupid?" Our roundtable will share their thoughts on our caller's plan. Naturally, we'll make some airtime for Doug's Friday trivia game show. This week's question? The original iPod sale price!

The provision of financial services is profoundly changing worldwide – so much so that many commentators are predicting the death of banking as we know it. The threat of banks’ extinction is not new; it’s been heralded many times in the past. For centuries, as banks have expanded and evolved, they have faced competition from other types of financial institutions. Despite high barriers to entry and as a result, relatively low turnover, many commentators have anticipated the end of the traditional banking business model. Today, we are again experiencing radical changes in the way households and businesses transact. The primary drivers are rapid advances in technology and post-crisis changes in the financial regulatory landscape, both of which have fuelled increased competition and encouraged new entrants in the provision of financial services. Critically, today’s competition to big bank business models emanates from nonbank firms whose core strategy centres around technological innovation (Big Tech and FinTech firms) and from nonbank financial institutions (NBFIs), such as large asset managers. This event, jointly organised by Bruegel, CEPR and ECARES will feature the presentation of the the latest Geneva Report on the World Economy, authored by Thomas Philippon, Kathryn Petralia, Tara Rice and Nicolas Véron. The report reviews the financial services landscape and how it has changed over the last several decades; discusses the competition from FinTech and Big Tech; and considers critical public policy questions surrounding the future of banking and concludes with suggestions of future work.

On the latest episode of the SaaS Revolution Show we chat with SalesLoft CMO, Sydney Sloan. She shares lessons from her vast experience in customer-focused marketing and the metrics she has learned to swear by and report.  Sydney has always been customer focused. Even back in the 90s when there were no CRM systems and no one spoke about the importance of myopically focusing on the customer. At the time she was doing what would end up a 15 year stint at Adobe - the place Sydney says she grew up in a way. At trade shows she would stand beside her sales colleague and have long conversations with people who visited their booth about their problems and challenges. Towards the end of her time in Adobe, she finally had a more customer experience role, leading the Customer Marketing. From then on, there was no going back. Her career would see her work for companies such as Jive Software and Alfresco. A little over a year ago, she joined Salesloft where she has been building a strong relationship between Marketing and Sales and has influenced how the work of marketing is reported to the board. Listen on to hear: What are the most important metrics in B2B marketing  Which are the ones that Sydney focuses as CMO specifically Why marketing should own the pipeline Sydney Sloan is one of many excellent speakers we will host at SaaStock19 in Dublin this October alongside Claire Hughes Johnson, COO, Stripe, Leela Srinivasan, CMO, Survey Monkey, Kathryn Petralia, Co-Founder and President, Kabbage, and Girish Mathrubootham, CEO, Freshworks. On the latest episode of the SaaS Revolution Show, we host Rory O'Driscoll, Partner of Scale Venture Partners and talk about the things he believes SaaS entrepreneurs should be mindful of even as the SaaS industry seems to be thriving. Originally from Ireland, Rory moved to California 28 years ago. For 25 of those, he has been investing in enterprise software with Scale Venture Partners and its predecessor. In that time he has learned a lot of things about the world of venture funding, starting with the fact of just how deceivingly easy all of it seems, yet how difficult it is to make the right decisions about entrepreneurs and their companies and have the conviction to see them through the tough times.   Rory has also learned to count his blessings and remember that a lot of the successful bets he has made have a lot to do with luck. That humbleness is what keeps him cautious even in the best of times for SaaS and in this interview he shares some of his reservations about valuations, market saturation, the increasing competition, making the economics work and others. Listen on to hear: How worrisome is the market saturation in SaaS How other companies are dealing with that issue How to become recession proof Rory O'Driscoll is one of many excellent speakers we will host at SaaStock19 in Dublin this October alongside Claire Hughes Johnson, COO, Stripe, Leela Srinivasan, CMO, Survey Monkey, Kathryn Petralia, COO, Kabbage, and Girish Mathrubootham, CEO, Freshworks. Even though they spoke at 4;20 on the day weed was legalised in Toronto, the topic they covered on the day was slightly different - category creation. On this week's episode we are bringing you their entire chat. Category creation had been coming up again and again during the two days of the conference. It's something that Mark, who has started 7 companies in his career, two of which category creators, is all too familiar with. His first one was Eloqua, which he founded 20 years ago and the second is his current company, Influitive, which he started 8 years ago. In their conversation, April and Mark talk about the origin story of each, to what extend Mark realized he was creating categories at the time, how he sold the idea to funders and customers, and many other. Both agree just how difficult category creation is and why you need to be built for the ordeal it would take. Mark and April also touch on the subject of the future of marketing and where the industry as a whole is going. Both Mark and April will be returning to Dublin, for SaaStock19. Brear, Simon Taylor, and Sarah Kocianski were our hosts, joined by: Marieke Flament, European Managing Director and CMO of Circle, Simon Vans-Colina, Engineer at Monzo, and Daniel Hegarty, CEO of Habito. Over in Atlanta, Sam Maule and Doug Bobenhouse are joined by three pairs of guests: Rob Frohwein, CEO of Kabbage and Shannon Johnson, Group President of Financial Institutions at Cardlytics; next up was Kathryn Petralia, COO and Co-Founder of Kabbage, and Andrew Morris, Chief Content Officer at Money20/20; rounding out the show we had Howard Bush, Principal on Industry Experiences and Banking and Capital Markets Lead at Microsoft and Ginger Schmeltzer, Owner and Principal at GDS Advisors, LLC. Coming on to incredible music and an epic trailer we kick things off with insight into challenger banks. The UK’s digital banks may be profitable sooner than you think Monzo, Starling and Tandem all expect to have hit profitability by 2020 or sooner. The panel examines if Monzo can hit profitability so soon given losses quadrupling recently, Starling's profitability from new revenue streams like business bank accounts and marketplace partnerships, and Tandem acquiring 250K customers since the start of 2018. Next up Starling Bank ditching the purple for a new set of cards, cards for the bank's consumer accounts will be teal, while its business accounts will be turning navy blue. And all cards are portait. Just by like we have Megan Caywood of Starling fame in the audience to show it off. We move on to Snapchat shutting down Snapcash and giving the space over to Venmo. Snapchat will abandon the peer-to-peer payment space on August 30th. The service was powered by Square Cash. Snapcash gave Snapchat a way to get users to connect payment methods to the app, which were vital to the company’s aim to become a commerce platforms where you can shop without leaving the app. Launched in 2014, ahead of Venmo and Zelle but has ultimately lost customers to both companies. And finally the London team takes a look at what happened to celeb-endorsed cryptocurrencies. Heading over to Atlanta Doug and Sam kick things off with Rob Frohwein and Shannon Johnson on Uber and Venmo partnering to deliver a new payment experience. The four discuss Uber and Venmo are partnering to deliver a seamless new payment experience available with Uber and Uber Eats. More than 6M payments on Venmo mentioned “Uber” in their description over the past year, how big a deal the partnership is, how important it is that Venmo is offering bank-like solutions without being a bank, and Venmo's security. Next up, Kathry Petralia and Andrew Morries walk on stage to a great deal of applause, to discuss Facebook Google and others uniting to let customers transfer data between apps. They take a look at whether this is a bonus for start ups, what it means for privacy and data security and why Apple is conspicuously absent from this initiative. Howard Bush and Ginger Schemltzer are on stage next to discuss VISA MoneyGram and Visa Team preparing to deliver real-time global P2P, whether it's a digital and mobile payment option targeting milennials, if cash is still king, why the plan is starting with Mexico and the Philippines and where they'll go next. And finally the panel takes a look at a woman driving through the streets of South Korea and leaving $14,000 worth of cash in her wake. May in Atlanta - Fintech South and Glenbrook Payments Boot Camp Everyone in the payments industry knows that Atlanta is a hotbed of activity. Coming shortly to Atlanta are two fintech-focused events that will add to the goings-on. The Fintech South conference takes place on May 7 and 8. With great speakers - and great sponsors like Glenbrook and the Technology Association of Georgia - the conference describes itself as “FinTech South 2018 is a global exchange of insights, innovations and trends fueling tomorrow's financial tech industry. “Attracting international companies and speakers across multiple industries, FinTech South is an opportunity to engage with 400 FinTech companies employing more than 130K employees globally, generating $72B in revenues, and processing over 118B transactions annually.” Speakers include: Kathryn Petralia, President and Co-founder of Kabbage Barry McCarthy, EVP of Network and Security Solutions at First Data Nuno Sebastiao, founder and CEO of Feedzai, who is also a past guest on Payments on Fire. Right after the conference ends, Glenbrook will host our Payments Boot Camp on May 9 and 10. Both events draw will attendees from all over North America. So if you want to expand your network, hear the latest at the conference and/or get smart about how payments work, come to Atlanta. Authentication, Biometrics, and Banking Authentication online remains one of the most challenging aspects of life online. Given the complete availability of personal data, account takeover has never been easier for the hackers. Knowledge-based authentication (KBA) asks softball questions like “what was your father’s middle name?” Easy stuff to find online. User IDs and passwords are even easier to find. We have a problem. Strengthening the connection between an accountholder’s true identity - perhaps proven by a drivers license or passport - and the credentials that the user presents online is necessary and the topic of this Payments on Fire episode. George speaks with Andrew Gowasack, CEO and co-founder, of TrustStamp, an identity verification company using AI and facial biometrics to create a strong, unique digital credential. For a few use cases, TrustStamp also employs a blockchain-based database. Andrew knows all about the Technology Association of Atlanta, too. So, take a listen and geek out in this conversation about authentication, biometrics, and how to answer the online conundrums of “who are you?” and “do I trust you?”

We do this both directly in the US, and deployed over $4 billion to 130,000 small businesses in the US, and we also operate internationally, through partnerships with large institutions that licensed our technology to do the same thing abroad. We partner with big banks like Santander, ING, and Deutsche Bank. And our customers are able to, using our automated platform, get through the entire application process for a small business loan in less than ten minutes, and actually in many cases have funds in their accounts.” Listen to their half hour conversation for a deep dive into small business lending and how Fin Tech—and especially Kabbage—are changing how it happens.
