Art education can create a space for excitement and joy in learning according to Colleen's guest, Shannon Johnson, Arts Education Specialist at the Oregon Department of Education (ODE). Colleen, a visual artist herself, explains the crucial role that art plays in Transformational Social-Emotional Learning (TSEL) by playing to individual strengths, building confidence, and encouraging students to express themselves in their own unique ways.  Among the many resources discussed in this episode, Shannon highlights the Arts, Care & Connection Project for elementary grades in which teaching artists provide videos integrating the Core Art Standards in dance, music, theater, and visual arts with Oregon's TSEL standards. Educators, regardless of their own artistic experience, become co-learners with their students as they incorporate various ways of self-expression in their explorations. Integrating art into the curriculum involves finding connections between various art forms and subject content. Shannon points out multiple sources where educators will find ideas and support for adding an artistic aspect to their classroom. Resources -  Arts for Learning Northwest - connecting teaching artists with schools for educational arts programming, workshops, performances, and artist residencies   Arts, Care & Connection Program - arts integration lessons and professional learning for educators   Young Audiences Arts for Learning - the nation's oldest and largest arts-in-education learning network     Oregon Department of Education resources -  Arts Education Resources Oregon Open Learning Hub Chronicles of Oregon Open Learning - a monthly newsetter Arts Access Toolkit Arts Education Newsletter       OEA Grow is a proud member of the Labor Radio Podcast Network

Jaren has been involved in a variety of social justice issues, including restorative justice, which she talks about in this episode.  Shannon Johnson lives in rural Chisago County and works as a client support team manager for a technology company. Shannon and her dad shared a love of outdoor activities, such as hunting and sport shooting. She is an advocate for sensible laws that allow for responsible gun ownership, while preventing the sort of tragedy she and her family has experienced.    Jarren and Shannon received Survivor Fellowships from Everytown for Gun Safety, which allowed them to learn how to use their experiences as a force for positive change, working with Moms Demand Action to end gun violence. Outline Amy: Welcome to Breaking Down Patriarchy! I'm Amy McPhie Allebest. Today we will be discussing the first, and possibly the only, work of fiction on our list of essential texts. It's a short story called “The Yellow Wallpaper,” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and if you haven't read it, or if you haven't read it in awhile, then I encourage you to press pause on this podcast, go read it, and then come back. Or even easier, you can go listen to it! It's about 40 minutes long, and you can find it on Audible, or for free on Librivox or YouTube. It was written in 1892 so it's in the public domain now, which means it's free, and it's a really, really good story, so go read or listen and then come back. Ok, so welcome back! Today we are going to be discussing Charlotte Perkins Gilman's “The Yellow Wallpaper,” but first I want to introduce my reading partner, Shannon Johnson. Hi, Shannon! Shannon: Hi, Amy! Amy: I will always remember the moment that you and I met, Shannon - it was at the welcome dinner for our master's program at Stanford, and I was feeling so nervous that I would be the only mom there, and I wouldn't have anything in common with anyone… and I stood up and introduced myself and mentioned that I had four kids, and you piped up from across the room and said “I have four kids too, and I think we went to the same college, so we need to talk afterward.” And we did, and it turns out we have tons in common and speak the same language and have been fast friends ever since. But can you tell us some more about yourself - where you come from, etc? Shannon bio I'm descended on both sides from white Europeans who came to the U.S. in the 1800s. My middle name, Olena, actually comes from my great-great-great grandmother who emigrated from Norway. She and her husband and several children (one of whom worked as a boot boy in Brigham Young's house) left the Mormon church a few years after settling in Utah, probably because of polygamy.  I grew up mostly in Utah and went to BYU, where I met my husband online before that was a thing. I've taught conversational English in Japan and Cairo, and now I work in admin at Stanford. I am currently procrastinating writing my master's thesis on the Mormon church's history of racial restrictions and revelations and how the memorialization of these events serves the present moment.  I like to view Mormon history as a case study in patriarchal American culture. I also like hiking, yoga, British tv, and trashy romance novels. I live in Santa Clara, California with my four daughters, aged 10-20, and my patient husband. Amy: Shannon and I were both English majors, and when we were talking about how to present the book, of course we discussed which critical approach we wanted to assume as we introduced the text. So Shannon, why don't you start us off.  Shannon: Jump into the book - let's read the story as a story I re-listened again this week, and I was struck by how appropriate it is for Halloween (since we're lucky enough to be recording on October 30th). It's a deceptively simple tale that functions so well as both thrilling short story and parable on the dangers and consequences of unchecked patriarchy. It employs the tropes common to Gothic Romance (think the Bronte sisters, Ann Radcliffe, Daphne Du Maurier, Mary Shelley), elements of atmospheric sensory description, a creeping, mounting sense of disquiet, even the stock characters of naive, Mary-Sue protagonists, unsympathetic housekeepers, and insensitive/hyper-rational love interests/husbands.  Last warning to those who don't want spoilers, I'm going to go over the plot briefly, including the ending. So really, go listen or read first. A young woman is brought to a grand summer rental house by her physician husband. She has mixed feelings about the house, and even mentions how “romantic” it would be if the house were haunted in the second paragraph. She has been unwell,...

Beattie Mansion, known affectionately as the House on the Hill is an incredible building with a rich history. Built in 1854 by Armstrong and Eliza Beattie as their personal residence, the building originally consisted of just the east wing. Armstrong was the 1st banker in St. Joseph and was a shrewd and wealthy businessman. He was first elected mayor in 1857 and would go on to be re-elected 4 other times making him the only person to serve as mayor of St. Joseph 5 times.Armstrong died mysteriously in 1878 after a “sudden bout of cholera”. Eliza died 2 years later in 1880 and the couple left no heirs. The home was sold to the Ladies Union Benevolence Association (LUBA) and became a “Home for the Friendless” accommodating the homeless and distressed. In 1895, along with funding from a private family, the home was expanded and the west wing was built. Also in 1895 LUBA converted the home into the Memorial Home for the Aged which it served for 100 years. In 1995 LUBA, in need of more modern facilities for its residents, moved the aged home to another location and the building was temporarily used as a group home for the mentally ill and substance addicts. It was sold to the current owner in 2004 and has sat empty, with the plans to turn the building into a quaint B&B.During attempts to renovate the mansion, numerous contractors experienced paranormal activity and many refused to return. Contractors and caretakers report hearing disembodied voices, seeing shadow figures and full bodied apparition. In 2017.It seems that the most prominent spirit in the house is Eliza who lurks upstairs on the 2nd floor, guarding the hall connecting the east/west wings and she does not like males! Armstrong has also been discovered, pacing the halls, particularly in the East wing, whistling. On the 2nd floor, near the hallway connecting the 2 wings is a room housing at least 1 child spirit who has been captured yelling and laughing.

Credit Karma CEO Ken believes that within just a few years, computers will help optimize and execute these financial decisions for us. Will cyber risks derail consumer trust and hinder the rise of autonomous finance? Or will advanced data science enable the masses to benefit from the type of specialized financial advice and services previously only available to the super rich. Finn AI closes $11 Million Series A financing. Finn AI today announced it has completed a $11 Million Series A financing round. The new funding will be used to support the growth momentum underway at Finn AI across North America and Europe. BBVA launches Open Banking platform in the US. Over in Atlanta, Sam Maule and Doug Bobenhouse are joined by three pairs of guests: Rob Frohwein, CEO of Kabbage and Shannon Johnson, Group President of Financial Institutions at Cardlytics; next up was Kathryn Petralia, COO and Co-Founder of Kabbage, and Andrew Morris, Chief Content Officer at Money20/20; rounding out the show we had Howard Bush, Principal on Industry Experiences and Banking and Capital Markets Lead at Microsoft and Ginger Schmeltzer, Owner and Principal at GDS Advisors, LLC. Coming on to incredible music and an epic trailer we kick things off with insight into challenger banks. The UK’s digital banks may be profitable sooner than you think Monzo, Starling and Tandem all expect to have hit profitability by 2020 or sooner. The panel examines if Monzo can hit profitability so soon given losses quadrupling recently, Starling's profitability from new revenue streams like business bank accounts and marketplace partnerships, and Tandem acquiring 250K customers since the start of 2018. Next up Starling Bank ditching the purple for a new set of cards, cards for the bank's consumer accounts will be teal, while its business accounts will be turning navy blue. And all cards are portait. Just by like we have Megan Caywood of Starling fame in the audience to show it off. We move on to Snapchat shutting down Snapcash and giving the space over to Venmo. Snapchat will abandon the peer-to-peer payment space on August 30th. The service was powered by Square Cash. Snapcash gave Snapchat a way to get users to connect payment methods to the app, which were vital to the company’s aim to become a commerce platforms where you can shop without leaving the app. Launched in 2014, ahead of Venmo and Zelle but has ultimately lost customers to both companies. And finally the London team takes a look at what happened to celeb-endorsed cryptocurrencies. Heading over to Atlanta Doug and Sam kick things off with Rob Frohwein and Shannon Johnson on Uber and Venmo partnering to deliver a new payment experience. The four discuss Uber and Venmo are partnering to deliver a seamless new payment experience available with Uber and Uber Eats. More than 6M payments on Venmo mentioned “Uber” in their description over the past year, how big a deal the partnership is, how important it is that Venmo is offering bank-like solutions without being a bank, and Venmo's security. Next up, Kathry Petralia and Andrew Morries walk on stage to a great deal of applause, to discuss Facebook Google and others uniting to let customers transfer data between apps. They take a look at whether this is a bonus for start ups, what it means for privacy and data security and why Apple is conspicuously absent from this initiative. Howard Bush and Ginger Schemltzer are on stage next to discuss VISA MoneyGram and Visa Team preparing to deliver real-time global P2P, whether it's a digital and mobile payment option targeting milennials, if cash is still king, why the plan is starting with Mexico and the Philippines and where they'll go next. And finally the panel takes a look at a woman driving through the streets of South Korea and leaving $14,000 worth of cash in her wake. In recent years our nation has been rocked by a string of mass shootings—Stoneman Douglas High School, Charleston, SC, Newton, CT, Virginia Tech, and the list goes on.  From these horrific incidents, some touching stories of courage and self-sacrifice have surfaced.   On December 2, 2015 county employees in San Bernadino, CA had gathered for a Christmas party.  Two gunmen stormed the center where they were gathered and opened fire on the unsuspecting crowd.  In the melee, coworkers Denise Peraza and Shannon Johnson took refuge behind an over-turned chair.  Shannon, an old Georgia boy, wrapped his arm around Denise and said, “I got you.”  With that, a bullet struck him.  He died while sheltering Denise.  She credits him with saving her life.    This morning I want to show you that God in Christ would gladly wrap you in His embrace.  Despite all that it cost Him, He still says, “I got you.  I got you.”  John 18:1-11 shows us plainly that He will die that we might live.
