How many of you have dreamed of walking away from your daily job and starting your own business? Meet Laura Watkins, a woman who did just that. Upon earning her bachelor's degree in Marketing and a Master of Business Administration at the University of Louisville, she entered the corporate workforce. However, her true goal had always been to open her own business. When a co-worker asked her, "If you could do absolutely anything, what would it be?" the answer seemed to fall out of Laura's mouth: "I would quit my job, go to hair school and open an Aveda salon." And within a year, that's exactly what she did. At age 30 Laura resigned her corporate job and began the journey to get her cosmetology license. Fast forward to 2021 and Laura's salon, Pure Salon Spa, an Aveda salon and spa on Bardstown Road in Fern Creek, which will celebrate its 13th year in business and has been ranked among the top 200 salons in North America by Salon Today Magazine for the past 10 years. Married for 18 years with two daughters, her other passions include empowering women, garnering more respect for careers in the beauty industry, and very importantly for Laura from a personal standpoint, ending the stigma associated with mental illness. Her passion around ending the mental illness stigma comes from her own struggles with severe depression, with which she was first diagnosed in 2015 and continues to seek treatment to stay mentally well to this day. Laura had many misconceptions about mental illness until it happened to her, and she firmly believes there is still a long way to go with ending those preconceived notions, which means talking more and more about it to raise awareness. One in four people struggle with mental illness in her/his lifetime and that means there are a LOT of people out there struggling alone. Laura wants to change that! I recently had the opportunity to discuss all of her passions on this week's Not So Darlin podcast. Simon and Colin are back this week to talk about the latest and greatest news in blockchain! First up, Simon and Colin discuss David Marcus' Senate plea. Colin explains why his 3 biggest takeaways from Marcus' plea were: surprisingly a lot of people in government do not like Facebook, Libra seems to be at a really early stage, and that Libra setting up in Geneva is potentially a fatal mistake. (1:45) Next, the pair talk about the DAWG (Digital Asset Working Group) report. They describe how it's really interesting to have a bunch of people who really understand the market look at tokens and say that there's a revenue opportunity, if banks can overcome regulatory uncertainty and find ways to comply. The guests joining us today are: Dylan Bourguignon, CEO and founder of So-Sure David Vanek, CEO and founder of Anorak First, up the guests explain how they go about establishing partnerships with fintechs. Dylan's So-Sure was able to join Starling's marketplace after having dinner with the company's CEO, Anne Boden. David on the other hand, didn't have dinner with anyone, but by building an interesting product Anorak were able to join the Starling marketplace. Sarah makes the point that this proves that there are two ways of going about this, one of them is a more personal way of making connections, whereas the other one puts product first. Nigel argues that the Starling marketplace idea is indeed very interesting, but it how do we take it from reactive, to proactive? They point out that this bill is a long way from becoming a reality and explain how this bill is seemingly targeted towards Facebook's Libra. (00:55) Next up, Simon and Colin break down an article about Mark Carney's statement that Libra is not "learning on the job" stuff, but must be rock solid from the get go, or it simply won't start. Carney also says that Libra pose a wide range of risks, which Simon explains could be due, in part, to optimistic tech developers not worrying about the many important things that could go wrong, as much as central bankers do. This week we have some great stories for you as Simon and Laura are joined by a couple of great guests: Jonathan Keeling - Partnerships Director at CrowdCube Alastair Thompson - Head of Business Development at Transferwise Ishaan Malhi - CEO of Trussle Simon Rabin - CEO of Chip We kick off the episode by taking a look at how Deutsche bank has had some pretty bad news lately. Germany's biggest lender has to slash 20,000 jobs and shed €50bn of assets. The first casualty was Deutsche's investment banking chief Garth Ritchie, who resigned on Friday ahead of the restructuring that will cut as many as 20,000 jobs around the world. The cuts have already started, and staff in London were told that their passes would stop working after 11am. The CEO described the job losses as "painful but unavoidable to insure Deutsche Bank's long-term success." Simon argues that compared to competitors, Deutsche Bank have really struggled. With all the costs that comes with the cuts, would it not just be better to start again? (1:43) Next up, we talk about how Dutch banks have been to told to stop using payments data for personalised marketing. ING received complaints after stating that they to planned to start using transaction data to send its customers more relevant email and text message offers and the Dutch Data Protection Authority has had to write to the Dutch Banking Authority making it clear that banks are "not allowed" to simply send their customers personalised offers based on payment details. Simon argues that this is rather odd, as having targeted ads coming to you is not necessarily a bad thing, as long as it is relevant. Is this just a question of relevance being subjective? Additionally, Senior fintech executives have complained that large financial institutions want to take information from them without offering adequate capital or other benefits in return. Colin and Simon are back this week with some brilliant stories for you! First up, we take a look at libra, libra and even more libra! We discussed it last week, but it really is all crypto twitter is talking about at the moment! Simon and Colin take a look at some of the responses to the announcement, and they start with the Congress wish for Facebook to stop the coin until the Congress can fully understand it! Colin argues that it is massively positive that people are watching and taking notes and that we now have the congress reacting! The only problem is that, according to Colin, it can take years until the Congress fully understands what libra actually is... (01.26) Next, we talk about what libra means for the world of crypto! Investors put record levels of money into bitcoin futures at regulated exchanges in the United States and Britain last month. Colin argues that bitcoin seems to do better than the other cryptocurrencies at the moment, so maybe that is a sign that if there is an institutional activity going on, is it happening more so in bitcoin than elsewhere? (25:52) We wrap up this episode by talking about all the all the enterprise announcements! (31:43) This week, the tweet of the week is somewhat different as we bring you a website of the week instead! (43:24) All this and so much more on this week's episode of Blockchain Insider. Sarah and Nigel are joined by a host of fantastic guests to take a look at the biggest news stories in insurance and insurtech over the last few weeks. Our brilliant guests include: Lea Nonninger - Research Analyst at Business Insider Intelligence Oliver Ralph - Insurance Correspondent, FT Andy Rear - Chief Exec, Digital Partners at Munich Re Kicking off the show, we take a look at how US insurtech Lemonade has arrived in Europe! Lemonade was launched on the 11th of June in Germany, and they are introducing their new policy 2.0. The new policy is described as an easy to understand document designed for laymen instead of lawyers. Nigel argues that Lemonade will be able to get a lot more done a lot quicker in Europe than in America as Europe is a lot less regulated. Lea argues, as someone who has lived in Germany, the problem with launching a forward-thinking digital first insurance policy in Germany is that Germans are rather traditional thinking. Are they ready for this new modern insurance? (02:00) We continue by talking about how car insurance premiums have jumped by a third in three years! The panel argues that this is not necessarily a bad thing, but what impact does this have on the number of people driving? Young people say that having a car is very difficult because of the cost. Cars are changing and getting more expensive to repair, so with the cost increase, will this impact how many people are driving cars? Are young people less interested in having a drivers license? (16:48) Other stories include: * London-based insurtech start-up Zego raises $42m to fund European expansion (24:14) * InsurTech Futures: Insurtech UK and the Department for International Trade join forces (31:01) * Flock launches first ‘real-time’ insurance and risk-management product for drone fleets (36:06) * Inland flood defences save the UK £1.1bn a year (44:17) All that and much more on this week's episode of Insurtech Insider.
