In this compelling episode of The Voice of Retail, I sit down again and catch up with Emma May, Founder of SophieGrace, a Calgary-based fashion brand transforming professional womenswear with modular, machine-washable designs. With a diverse background spanning law, politics, and real estate, Emma shares the origin story of SophieGrace, born from her frustration with the lack of cohesive, high-quality wardrobe options for professional women.Emma discusses how her brand serves an underserved segment—professional women who want elegant, coordinated, and comfortable clothing without the hassle of traditional shopping. She highlights how SophieGrace's clean design ethos and product quality have created an extremely loyal customer base across North America, including legal professionals, political leaders, and C-suite executives. We dive into the business model, including the online-first strategy supported by two physical showrooms in Calgary and Vancouver and Emma's growing interest in experiential retail through pop-ups and client-hosted events. She details how organic, word-of-mouth growth—amplified by strategic community events like wine-and-shop nights hosted by senior partners and wealth managers—has been central to building the brand's reputation.Emma also opens up about the operational and strategic challenges of manufacturing. Originally sourcing from China for scalability, SophieGrace explored Canadian production, only to be forced to return offshore after losing a key domestic supplier. Despite these hurdles, product quality and innovation remain front and center—stretch silk blouses and capsule drops ensure her customers return again and again. The conversation turns to current trade policy headwinds. With 30% of sales once coming from the U.S., Emma unpacks how the elimination of de minimis exemptions and looming tariffs—potentially exceeding 100%—have derailed her expansion plans. The result: a pivot back to Canadian growth and exploring new frontiers, including potential wholesale opportunities and a European launch.Emma's journey is a masterclass in entrepreneurial grit, customer-driven design, and navigating global trade complexity with agility. Whether you're a fashion entrepreneur, policy wonk, or retail strategist, this episode delivers a wealth of insights into building a brand with purpose and scalability in 2025's challenging retail environment. DataSolutions has announced that it is officially rebranding to Climb Channel Solutions Ireland as the distributor eyes up expansion in key markets across Europe. Following the acquisition of Dublin-based DataSolutions in October 2023, Climb Channel Solutions is now focusing on its growth in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). The group expects to generate 12% growth in this region during its 2024 financial year (FY 2024). It also anticipates 12-15% global growth in FY 2024, following a successful 2023 which saw it surpass $1.2 billion (approximately €1 billion) in revenues globally. This ongoing expansion will also be driven by mergers and acquisitions (M&A), with Climb Channel Solutions recently acquiringDouglas Stewart Software & Services, LLC ("DSS") in the US. Going forward, it will be focusing on Western Europe and the rest of EMEA as part of its M&A strategy. Climb Channel Solutions Ireland will be pivotal to the company's growth plans due to its success driven by longstanding relationships with high-performing Tier 1 technology vendors in Ireland - including HP Aruba, Check Point and Citrix. Furthermore, it introduced a number of new vendors to the Irish market earlier this year including SolarWinds, Quest Software and SmartBear. Together, these have enhanced the distributor's capabilities across the areas of cyber security, IT management, networking, and compliance. The company has also invested in a new ERP system and cutting-edge technologies, including Artificial Intelligence and data analytics, to streamline its operations and enhance its services for resellers and partners. As part of the rebrand, David Keating was made Country Manager of Ireland for Climb Channel Solutions. Roberta McCrossan also stepped into a new role as EMEA Marketing Director, with Brian Davis now serving as VP of Sales for the UK and Ireland, Kamel Kerbib taking up the role of Country Manager for France, and Patrick Van Arendonk assuming the position of Sales Director for Benelux. More recently, Martin Bichler was appointed Country Manager for the DACH region. David Keating, Country Manager for Climb Channel Solutions Ireland, said: "The merging of DataSolutions and Climb Channel Solutions has been a gradual process over the past year and the official rebrand now marks a new and exciting chapter for the business as we look to continue on our growth trajectory and expand further in Europe. "While there have been some new additions to our service offering, our success as a company has always been driven by our people and our resellers - who have been a great support over the last 30 years. As Climb Channel Solutions Ireland, that will remain the case as our experienced team looks to continue delivering outstanding service, innovating for partners, and driving business success." Dale Foster, CEO of Climb Global Solutions, added: "The integration and rebranding of DataSolutions marks a vital step in our growth journey and we are excited about the future. On that, mergers and acquisitions will remain a key part of our global strategy - enabling us to extend our geographic reach, add to the team, and bring in new vendors. We do have targets in mind, ones that fit into our overall plan and will bring value to the business, as well as our reseller partners. "Of course, we remain dedicated to our mission of creating an uncontested marketplace for emerging tech, along with delivering exceptional service. Our aim is not just to stick with what's proven and profitable today but to invest in and support the solutions that will shape tomorrow. By leveraging the expertise of our people, focusing on strategic partnerships, and engaging end-users, we will further solidify our position as a trusted partner in Ireland and further afield, thus propelling the business forward." This week HATM Podcast is on hiatus so we thought we'd rerelease an older episode for those of you who maybe haven't had the opportunity to explore the back catalog yet. This week's guest is my great friend Brett Rushforth and we are talking about both his favorite film- Up in the Air - and his work in 17th century New France. Looking back, this is one of the more interesting conversations I've ever been part of.  This episode is also one of the first we ever recorded (a testament to Brett's belief in this pod) so you'll hear some differences between how we did the show when we started and where we are now, so kind of a cool little archive. We'll also be livetweeting this film on Sunday, November 19th, so listen in before and see how that affects what you see. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the show. Again.About our guest:Brett Rushforth is a scholar of the early modern Atlantic world whose research focuses on comparative slavery, Native North America, and French colonialism and empire. His first book, Colonial North America and the Atlantic World: A History in Documents (co-edited with Paul W. Mapp), uses primary documents to trace the history of North America in its Atlantic context from the fifteenth through eighteenth centuries. His second book, Bonds of Alliance: Indigenous and Atlantic Slaveries in New France, examined the enslavement of American Indians by French colonists and their Native allies, tracing the dynamic interplay between Native systems of captivity and slavery and French plantation-based racial slavery. In 2013, Bonds of Alliance was named the best book on American social history by the Organization of American Historians (Curti Award), the best book on French colonialism before 1848 by the French Colonial Historical Society (Boucher Prize), the best book on the history of European expansion by the Forum on European Expansion and Global Interaction (FEEGI Biennial Book Prize), and the best book on French history and culture by the Center for French and Francophone Studies at Duke University (Wylie Prize). It was also one of three nominated finalists for the Frederick Douglass Book Prize for the best book on the history of slavery. He recently completed, with Christopher Hodson, a book titled Discovering Empire: France and the Atlantic World from the Crusades to the Age of Revolution, which explores the relationships between Africans, Native Americans, and Europeans across four centuries, from roughly 1400 through Haitian independence in 1804. It will be published by Oxford University Press in 2024.Professor Rushforth works with graduate students in the fields of comparative slavery, early America, early modern Atlantic world, African diaspora, legal history, and Native American history. Before joining the faculty at the University of Oregon, he taught for a decade at the College of William and Mary and was senior academic staff at the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture. From 2013 to 2017 he was the book review editor of the William and Mary Quarterly.

**Gesprächspartner*innen:** - Thomas Weyrauch - Katharin Tai - María Cruz Berrocal - Klaus-Peter Willsch - Jens Damm - Yude Tang - Patrik Chen **Team:** - Moderation: Mirko Drotschmann - Sprecher*innen: Dominik Freiberger, Inga Haupt, Andrea Kath, Makke Schneider - Redaktion objektiv media GmbH: Janine Funke und Andrea Kath - Technik: Moritz Raestrup - Musik: Sonoton - Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeit: Daniela Ssymank - Produktion: objektiv media GmbH im Auftrag des ZDF - Redaktion ZDF: Katharina Kolvenbach **Literatur:** - Andrade, Tonio (2006): The Rise and Fall of Dutch Taiwan, 1624-1662: Cooperative Colonialization and the Statist Model of European Expansion, in: Journal of World History, Vol. 17 (4), S. 429-450. - Bergère, Marie-Claire (1994): Sun Yat-sen. Horizon Quantum Computing's expansion is part of its growth plan to leverage skilled quantum computing and software engineering talent in the region. It looks to benefit from the wealth of talent and serve customers in Europe, one of the world's major markets for quantum computing. Headed up by Irishman Joe Fitzsimons, Horizon Quantum Computing is opening a brand new office in Dublin, its first outside Singapore. The office paves the way for recruiting over 10 new roles over the next six months, which is already underway. The company is hiring for a range of positions, including product managers as well as a director of engineering, who will build and lead a new software engineering team. Horizon Quantum Computing also plans to partner with local Universities to provide internship opportunities. “We are excited to set up our European office in Ireland, a country with a substantial pool of technical talent,” said Joe Fitzsimons, CEO of Horizon Quantum Computing. “Our growth highlights the strength of the quantum computing ecosystem at a time when major tech players are struggling. We're looking forward to calling Dublin our second home and rolling out further recruitment to boost worldwide operations.” Committed to supporting mutual connections and collaborations between Singapore and Ireland, Horizon Quantum Computing has recently become a Foundation sponsor of the Irish Chamber of Commerce Singapore, with Dr Fitzsimons joining the Chamber's board. The development of a suite of soccer products will is expected to create 21 remote full-time and 175 seasonal analyst roles in Ireland over the next three years. The European launch follows the Aer Lingus Classic between the Northwestern Wildcats and the Nebraska Cornhuskers, both clients of PFF, at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The decision to establish an operation in Ireland was primarily driven by the availability of talent and the flourishing sports tech ecosystem here. These are exciting and interesting roles in software development, data collection and analysis in an international sports analytics company. I'm particularly pleased to see the company provide remote working opportunities – it's important to give employees the option, where possible and the Government is putting in place the infrastructure to support that choice. It also allows PFF to recruit from a rich talent pool, across the entire country. I wish the team at PFF the very best with this expansion.” Recruitment for a number of full-time and seasonal roles is now underway. To explore opportunities with PFF, visit Nate Gerstle, GM Soccer Operations at PFF said: “Ireland will play a key role in PFF's expansion into the beautiful game. Its strategic location, the availability of skilled labour, and rich history of achievements in science and technology are among the many reasons why our management team chose Ireland. To say nothing of the fact that the environment is simply welcoming; Ireland is encouraging PFF's success, and our team wants to return that success in-kind.” Mary Buckley, Executive Director, IDA Ireland said: “PFF's decision to have a European presence in Ireland, is welcome news. Lecture summary: The presentation analyses an unprecedented new international moral and legal rule that forbids one state from hosting money stolen by the leaders of another state. The aim is to counter grand corruption or kleptocracy, when leaders of poorer countries loot billions of pounds at the expense of their citizens, and transfer the money to rich host countries like the UK, US and Switzerland. The presentation discusses the shortcomings of the effectiveness of international law in this area, and the resulting tendency to resort to creative solutions and non-state actors in recovering stolen wealth hidden abroad. Lastly, there is a link to an earlier World Bank report on the topic I co-authored at: https://star.worldbank.org/sites/star/files/puppetmastersv1.pdf Jason Sharman is the Head of the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge, as well as the Sir Patrick Sheehy Professor of International Relations. On this week's show, recorded live in New York on April 3, Kaiser and Jeremy have a wide-ranging chat with former New York Times China correspondent Howard French, now a professor at Columbia University's School of Journalism. We talk about his book Everything Under the Heavens and China's ambitions and anxieties in the world today. What to listen for on this week’s Sinica Podcast: 7:31: How do Chinese people react to Western reporting about China? Howard has noticed a shift in his students from the People’s Republic of China and suggests, “Because of the changing climate in China, [Chinese students] have a greater appreciation of some of the liberties that go into being able to express criticism about China or being able to think off the beaten path about China.” 23:48: The three discuss Howard’s book, Everything Under The Heavens, and some of the themes in it. Howard: “So the argument that runs through the book is that, if not DNA, then these two realities of [China’s] longevity and continuity on the one hand, and size on the other hand, have created habits of language and habits of mind and patterns of diplomacy that are fairly consistent, but we can see them repeating themselves in variations over a very, very long period of time.” 32:56: Is China a revisionist power or a status quo power? Before Jeremy can finish asking this question, Howard replies, “It’s both.” Howard explains how this could be possible: “There is an insistent notion in China that I admire. I don’t think it’s always to China’s benefit, but I admire the instinct, if instinct is the right world. ‘For every problem we should find a Chinese way to answer it.’ And so, if international relations can be construed as a problem…then finding a Chinese way alongside of accepting incumbent arrangements is a reflex that one is likely to continue to see in China.” 44:46: The relationship between the United States and China appears to have arrived at a critical juncture. In response to Kaiser’s request to provide a prognosis for U.S.-China relations, Howard contests that “most of the liability of the present moment is actually bound up in the present moment.” He continues, “There will be consequences to pay even if Trump goes [in 2020]…and that the United States, I think, no matter what happens in the succession year after Trump, in the best of scenarios, will still have surrendered some not inconsiderable part of its prestige and power in the world.” Recommendations: Jeremy: The Idle Parent: Why Laid-Back Parents Raise Happier and Healthy Kids, by Tom Hodgkinson, a case for laissez-faire parenting. Howard: Empires of the Weak: The Real Story of European Expansion and the Creation of the New World Order, by J.C. Sharman, and River of Dark Dreams: Slavery and Empire in the Cotton Kingdom, by Walter Johnson. In this episode We've brought together some of our favourite folks from the world of FinTech challenger banks. In this episode, we talk to Starling, Fidor, and Loot about their business models, who their customers are, and how they're using technology and data to provide a great customer experience. We also discuss the challenges they're facing, what agile really means, and what's coming up for them in 2017. Enjoy the show! Our guests Megan Caywood, the Chief Platform Officer at Starling Bank Sophie Guibaud, the Vice President of European Expansion at Fidor Ollie Purdue, Founder and CEO at Loot “We like to spend a lot of time talking with our customers,” Megan says, “not just usability sessions, but chatting with them and understanding how they're currently using their banking products and where those pain points are. What we hear time and again is that what they're used to expecting –  seamlessness and ease of use from other apps and products – just isn't what they see from their bank.” Learned something cool on today's podcast? It would make our week if you told a friend about us and gave us a little shout out on iTunes. Thank you! The post Ep228 – Challenger Banks: The Battle Begins appeared first on 11:FS.

Over the past 6 months Brews News has received at least one request to promote a crowd funding scheme covering everything from a "precision tool for your perfectly crafted beers" aka a bottle opener to "a draft system that serves any beer, fresh from the tap, anywhere you want it". We also recently received a release about the "world's first smartphone-controlled home-brewing machine". Today we received an announcement from Yeastie Boys advising that next year they will be crowd funding expansion into Europe. I have mixed feelings about the whole crowd funding thing. On one hand, it is an excellent way for new, small and non-traditional businesses to leverage the consumer demand and passion for what they are doing. On the other hand, there is an element of hype and hubris creeping in to the craft beer world that, when combined with a new, loosely regulated funding model, has the potential for disaster. With Yeastie Boys' Stu McKinlay being a great observer of the craft industry and always willing to have a frank chat, Yeastie Boys announcement seemed a great chance to chat about Zen and the art of crowd funding. If you're interested in crowd funding, and especially investing in Yeastie Boys, here's some background to them and their campaign and crowd funding of beer in general... Metabrewery Seeks Backing Vocalists For World Changing Gig (Yeastie Boys) The Social Brew Work (All About Beer Magazine) BrewDog – Fill your boots! (Referenced in the conversation)
