Neobanks are 100% digital. They run exclusively through mobile apps, with no brick-and-mortar premises. They offer customers a user-first design, and promise low cost banking operations. There are more and more neobanks around, drawing in millions of users and rivalling traditional banks, although they don't technically hold the same status.  Don't confuse neobanks with digital banks, which are usually the online-only arms of bigger players in the banking sector. You may have heard of the SanFrancisco based neobank Chime, which is the leader in the US at the moment. But brands like N26, Revolut and Monzo are also bringing over their expertise from Europe, where the online-only trend is further ahead. All were created in the late 2010s. So why would I want to try a neobank then? So what about our traditional brick-and-mortar banks? They're not just going to disappear are they? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! With traditional banks, it takes days to move your money, they offer little to no yield, and worst of all, they can freeze your account without warning. Also, you no longer control your assets once deposited - they become liabilities on the bank's balance sheet. That means if things go wrong, your best hope is a bailout. We're currently ushering into a new era of banking, one powered by stablecoins. One company building on this vision is Dakota, a crypto-powered neo-bank designed for global businesses. With Dakota, your deposits are fully backed by U.S Treasuries, you can send money globally with no transaction fees, and earn yield on your assets through U.S Treasuries and DeFi products, all within a single platform.  On Episode 76, I spoke with Ryan Bozarth, the Co-Founder & CEO of Dakota.  If you're a fan of the smooth, user-friendly experience of Neobanks like Mercury, Brex, Wise, or Revolut, then you're going to love Dakota. First up, Klarna's U.S. launch and its new “Balance” feature — despite the hype, it's not quite banking. In the U.S., “Balance” is more of a wallet within Klarna's app, far from their European banking model. The key is to market your services as effectively as neobanks without the need to create one, fostering a differentiated and valuable proposition for potential business customers. ⚠️ Neobank creates a compelling argument to some targeted groups to move away from their traditional bank and to come "bank" with them. 00:52

It's surprising to me that people are still amazed at the fact that banks can go bust. It most definitely will not be the last time [a bank goes bust], it's a cyclical thing.20 YEARS IN PERSPECTIVE:“I try not to do stress.”We had initially gone to Dubai to spend 4 years there. 4 years turned into 13. All in all can't complain, it's been a good couple of decades. The challenge has been to maintain a good balance of finding stimulation at work, finding stimulation at home with your family, with your sports, with your activities and then obviously with your friendship. As you start to bring other elements into this equation, it becomes extremely complicated to find the right balance.Sports [for me] has always been a huge part in terms of finding some kind of chemical balance I think there's a huge impact there. It's important not to take yourself too seriously right? If you were no longer around is your job that essential that there is a crisis and the answer - people will find alternative ways and the world continues to turn. So I think if you don't take yourself so seriously and sometimes have a little reality check it helps to deal with perceived stress. I try not to do stress.I'm a bit of a stoic, so we don't do regrets, but learnings. There are too many learnings I think, to list them here.“Retirement ever or never” – “Definitely ever. But I have a whole bunch of other stuff that I want to do, so it won't be retirement per se. But retirement from banking, yeah, that's coming up.”ON TOPIC: Banking, private banking, neo banks, digital currencies, bank busts and moreThe traditional model [of banking] is reaching the end of its journey. When everybody knocks up, rocks up at your door and they want their cash at the same time the bank goes bust. It is honestly as simple as that. That is what happened to Credit Suisse. We dealt with this in a very Swiss and pragmatic way: there's a bank run, it's Credit Suisse, okay UBS, you're buying them and that's just the end of it. And we will provide you with the necessary guarantees to do so please make sure it's done in 48 hours. Some version of chat GPT whether it's 4 or 5 or 6 and they've already had some experiments will end up picking stocks way better than a human being.AI will be able to process amounts of information that human beings are just not capable of doing and so I think that is going to make banks better, cheaper for the end user, right? And the winners will be those who will have invested and deployed this technology in an appropriate and applicable manner.Crypto - I'm still not sure in the current state of things that it has any applicability whatsoever quite frankly. Will we emerge from currency to some form of digital currency - one hundred percent we will and it's just a natural evolution of currency. We used to barter, and then used to use precious metals, and then currency came into effect, and then it was coins and bills, and all of that will disappear and it'll all be digitalized.Does bitcoin take over from the US dollar and the Swissie? No I don't think so.ON TOPIC: State of play for the world, geopoliticsIs it that the world is in a mess or is it that human beings are messy creatures? Not to be cliché, but [the world] is getting more polarized at every level of society and in countries, exacerbated by social media. All THINGS INSEAD AND GIVING BACKIn life the most valuable thing that you could possibly have are friendships. And INSEAD has undoubtedly given me extremely precious friendships of people that are like-minded, generous, extremely intelligent and towards whom I've been able to turn for advice for real kind of genuine conversation over the years.

Today, I'm talking to fintech pioneer, Shamir Karkal, the Founder and CEO of Simple. Founded in 2009, Simple was one of the very first neobanks, meaning they offered banking services, but were not themselves a bank. Simple built the user experience and tech, but partnered with a bank to provide the charter. In 2009, it was not at all obvious this was even possible. Simple helped prove it was and grew a cult-like customer base in the 100s of thousands. It's hard to overstate how important the neobank model has become for fintech in the decade plus. Today, there are 100+ Neobanks and 20+ banking as a service platforms. But the bank-as-a-service model, is not just a story of neobanks. It's been crucial to the growth of fintech, especially embedded fintech, more broadly. So, today, we're going to talk w/ Shamir about what it took build Simple and pioneer a category. But, like any good pioneer, Shamir's not finished. Today, he's founded Sila, a banking-as-a-service platform, informed from his time building Simple. We'll talk cover that as well as what Shamir see's in the future of financial infrastructure.

In this week's episode of the DeFi Download, Piers Ridyard talks with Lane Kasselman, the president of Blockchain.com. They talk about Lane's experiences leading a rapidly expanding multi-services platform, the reasoning behind Blockchain.com's focus on user-friendliness, and the differences in cryptocurrency adoption across the world.Chapters00:00 - Intro[01:15] Lane Kasselman as President of Blockchain.com and the company's growth under his direction[01:56] How does Lane describe Blockchain.com and who its ideal user is?[05:20] What was unique about the DNA of Blockchain.com, and what did it do differently to remain in the space when many other wallet companies have vanished? [08:05] Are exchange products and institutional products on Blockchain.com custodial? What was the internal narrative behind the company's current offering of easier-to-use services for consumers and businesses, given the early decentralisation maximalism basis of "not your keys, not your crypto" that drove the company's early success?[10:35] Numerous markets in regions with troubled financial systems have adopted cryptocurrencies as a replacement for their failing monetary structures. What factors contribute to its relative lack of popularity in the Western world?[11:45] As a result of lagging behind in digitalising its banking system, Europe is now at the forefront of fintech, which will likely slow the widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies. China's slow adoption of cryptocurrency is a result of the country's widespread use of QR-code-based payment systems. By contrast, people in parts of Africa and South America are turning to cryptocurrency because of the region's inadequate banking infrastructure.[14:59] Neobanks were instrumental in laying the groundwork for new technology finance.[17:20] Most people would rather play it safe with their money than take any chances with it. However, the crypto community tends to attract those with a high-risk tolerance.[18:28] A challenge to the Blockchain.com model: Because decentralised finance is still in its early stages, we have tended to provide a safe-feeling consumer experience, such as Blockchain.com's customer support. MetaMask and Uniswap, on the other hand, provide no such help. Will there ever come a time when users are knowledgeable and comfortable enough with decentralised platforms to abandon centralised ones?[24:22] Will Blockchain.com's super wallet strategy additionally include providing users with an intuitive interface for accessing services like Aave, SushiSwap, and Uniswap?[26:14] The entire consumer model is all about value-add and an appealing interface, both of which crypto lacks. Another hot topic is regulation. Where does regulation fit into the development of better interfaces for services built on top of public ledgers that provide yield, liquidity opportunities, borrowing and lending, and are packaged into consumer-friendly products?[29:25] Reasons why the American government and regulators cannot make cryptocurrency illegal[33:49] One of the most serious issues in the regulatory sphere right now is the delay in thinking. The majority of regulatory enforcement actions have focused on obvious scams. Demonstrating the value of the cryptocurrency industry has become more urgent and necessary.[39:41] Where to follow Blockchain.comFurther resourcesWebsite: blockchain.com Twitter: @blockchain Lane Kasselman's Twitter: @kasselman  Peter Smith's (CEO) Twitter: @OneMorePeter----------------Learn more about Radix:Website: https://www.radixdlt.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/RadixDLTTelegram: https://t.me/radix_dlt

It is time for another monthly installment of Payment Trends - July 2022. Today we are sending out an invite to Senator Dick Durbin or anyone from Congress who would like to talk about credit card processing. We would LOVE to have you on our podcast and discuss payments and the payment ecosystem. We sent your team an email via your website. Today we are diving into the news: Apple - Getting sued for creating a non-competitive market. Buy Now Pay Later - more players are getting into the business. NEOBANKS - a growing trend - open a bank account without walking in the door. Government Regulation - is getting crazy - more agencies and task forces are looking at the financial industry. The reasons for this? Innovation is outpacing regulation - so businesses - FinTech are moving faster than the Government can react. Also, a few "Payment Activists" in Congress are attacking various financial industries. Here is a list of some of the agencies we are talking about: CFPB- Consumer Finacial Protection Bureau Federal Reserve Central Digital Bank Task Force on Financial Technology Task force on Mobile and Security The Office of Competition and Innovation - to promote innovation in the area of payments. Yet they are stifling innovation with over-regulation. The Government is asking all the big tech companies to hand over all types of information concerning all the data they collect and what they do with it. Meanwhile, insider trading has been going on for years, with congresspeople buying stocks that they have inside information. Now an investigation concerning $1.8 million of Crypto was sold by Congress before the new tax laws were released to the public. Since then, cryptocurrency has taken a tumble as investors and traders bailed out. This kind of stuff needs to stop. Also, more rules on Crypto, and what agency or agencies will be in charge of that? It looks like a hot mess - as the rules they are looking at do not make sense. So, enjoy today's Payment Trends Podcast. Techcrunch reports fintech accounted for 21% of all venture capital dollars raised in 2021. When things go up, they also have a Newtonian way of coming down. The same article says that 10% of all layoffs in Q2 came from the fintech sector. Neobanks such as Chime, Nubank, Klarna and Revolut were rocketships that now have pulled IPOs and taken massive valuation haircuts. Does this signal the end of neobanking? Ron Shevlin, Chris Skinner and Jason Henrichs debate what's next for the neos. In the second half, Amber Buker, former partner at Alloy Labs where she led strategic insights, decided a global economic meltdown was the perfect time to start, wait for it, a neobank. Tune in to hear it isn't crazy as it sounds. She even convinced Alloy Labs Alchemist fund to invest. That's both a disclosure and vote of confidence. Hello and welcome back to Equity, a podcast about the business of startups, where we unpack the numbers and nuance behind the headlines. Every Monday, Grace and Alex scour the news and record notes on what's going on to kick off the week.Thankfully we did not start this episode by talking about Elon Musk and Twitter! You are welcome!Instead we started with bleak Chinese economic news, that segued into falling venture capital totals for a key startup sector in that country. It turns out that a massive regulatory crackdown will have in-market impacts! From there it was time to chat Yuga Labs and its recent minting chaos. Bloomberg has more. Then it was time to chat neobanks, in particular the recent rounds from Open ($50 million) and Cogni ($23 million). This is not a live show week, so Equity will simply come out on Friday as usual. That said, we do have a Twitter space scheduled for today with our own Kirsten Korosec, so follow us on Twitter and we will see you there.
