We were gonna do an episode of Willets Pod last night, but illness got in the way, so here are some fun facts as the Men's College World Series gets underway today. Here's a fun fact about each college team's products who made it to MLB. This isn't necessarily what would've been discussed on the podcast that we didn't get to do, but came up in the internet rabbit hole while preparing for it.Oral Roberts: Two of the three All-Stars the school has produced are active players, Jordan Romano and Jose Trevino. The other is 1980s baseball card staple Mike Moore.TCU: Pete Donohue remains the winningest major league pitcher who attended TCU, with 134 victories from 1921-32. But Jake Arrieta got close with 115.Virginia: Sean Doolittle and Ryan Zimmerman are multiple-time All-Stars, but the one Cavalier who made it to Cooperstown never played an All-Star Game. That's because Eppa Rixey's career was from 1912-33.Florida: The all-time leading Gator in major league homers is and has been Al Rosen since the 1950s. Pete Alonso is currently trailing 192-168, with Mike Stanley still to catch at 187.Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons have given us not only the pitcher Ryan Braun and the outfielder Dave Robertson, but also these great names: Mike Buddie, Dave Bush, Chris Getz, Lee Gooch, Doyt Morris, Dick Newsome, Charlie Ripple, Elmer Sexauer, and Brick Smith.Stanford: Six former Cardinal players have hit 100 or more major league home runs — Carlos Quentin, Ed Sprague, Steve Buechele, Jed Lowrie, Jeffrey Hammonds, and Bob Boone. None has reached 200. Good luck to Tommy Edman, currently at 47.LSU: As of today, DJ LeMahieu has the same .417 career slugging percentage as his predecessor with the Tigers, Aaron Hill.Tennessee: The one active ex-Volunteer who's been an All-Star? You guessed it, Yan Gomes. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit willetspen.substack.com/subscribe
The field for Omaha is set! The 2023 Men's College World Series features the favorite, some expected teams, and a few surprises. Matt's championship pick of Arkansas didn't even make it out of the regionals, while Trey's pick, Wake Forest, has been dominant in every game so far. The Demon Deacons have scored double digits in all but one game and haven't lost yet. UVA is back in Omaha for the sixth time in program history, all since 2009. The Cavaliers have looked good as well so far, and they'll look to make another championship run when things get underway. Plus, Oakland A's fans stage a reverse boycott, we're seeing a lot of injuries across MLB, and Shohei Ohtani is still doing things only he can.

Work with Alex and have a more reliable path to play college baseball: Alex's Premier Athletes Recruiting Program The NCAA Division I Baseball Championship is structured as a tournament with 64 teams. These teams are chosen from an eligible pool of 300 teams, with 30 being awarded an automatic bid as champions of their conferences, and 34 being selected at-large by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee. 16 teams are given national seeds, and have the option of hosting a super regional if they advance to the second round. The tournament consists of four stages: Regionals: The 64 teams are divided into 16 brackets of four teams each. Each bracket is conducted as a double-elimination tournament, meaning a team isn't eliminated until they lose two games. Super Regionals: The winners of the regionals, a total of 16 teams, move on to the super regionals. These teams are split into eight pairings and compete in a best-of-three series. Men's College World Series (MCWS): The eight winners of the super regionals proceed to the MCWS in Omaha, Nebraska. Here, the teams are divided into two double-elimination brackets of four teams each. Men's College World Series Finals: The winners of the two MCWS brackets meet in the MCWS Finals, which is a best-of-three series to decide the NCAA champion. The Men's College World Series is the final stage of the NCAA Division I baseball tournament. After two rounds of play (the regionals and super regionals), there are just eight teams left. These teams head to Omaha, Nebraska, for the MCWS, which is the culmination of the tournament. Regionals start this Friday on ESPN!

In spite of a Friday afternoon scare, the Texas Longhorns are heading back to Omaha for the Men's College World Series -- trip No. 38 in the 75-year history of the event. Texas, in spite of troubles in the regular season, is exactly where everyone expected them to be, it just took a bit of a different journey to get there. Now they sit in a bracket with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who knocked off top-ranked Tennessee, as well as a pair of rivals -- the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas A&M Aggies. Texas also brought home a pair of second-place finishes at the track and field national championships, giving coach Edrick Floréal his fourth top-two finish in three seasons at the helm for the Longhorns as he continues to build that program back.
