Episode 36: One Poem that Saved a Forest with Jacqueline Suskin A little while ago, I came across an article in Yes! Magazine that stopped me in my tracks. It was called One Poem that Saved A Forest: How the friendship between a poet and a timber baron kept a grove of California redwoods from clear-cutting by Jacqueline Suskin. Welcome to the Ethics Issue. Don't worry - it's not boring. In our SoulVox roundtable with HiC Luttmers and Mildred Lynn McDonald, I posed the question, "Is morality obsolete?" We explore whether an externally imposed and/or validated moral code is still useful in 2016, and if not, what is likely to replace it in our lives. I also share an impromptu reflection on the "Ethics" of The Hanged Man. Waxing philosophical about the nature of desire and its impact of moral choice on desire (and vice-versa), I realized a few things. My attention was drawn to The Hanged Man - a kind of cycling back to The Fool and The Magician, but with depth of experience and maturity. Pretty cool. In our semi-regular Spiritual Transhumanist segment with Lincoln Cannon, we talk about Ethics and in particular how Ethics emerges from Desire. A responsible ethics can indeed be very fulfilling and not punitive. Finally, I share a reflection on Original Sin. Yup. I know - you probably think it's not relevant. But check it out. I think you'll find this interpretation of Adam and Eve in the Garden to be pretty useful. Welcome to the SoulVox Network, and to Convergence. Let the stories unfold, and take what serves you. Thanks for listening.

Episode #3: What is an Animal Totem or Animal Spirit Guide? Did you know that there are hidden qualities and forces of Nature that we can access if we are attuned to the natural forces around us? It is true. Personal power animals and the connection to animals and their wisdom are found throughout the world in many cultures. From cave paintings, ornate jewelry and carvings to countless stories and legends. Animal Totems express the spirit nature of that species and exemplify qualities we can learn from. They are psychological and spiritual symbols that convey to us the qualities that we need in our daily lives. In essence, they are a mirror of us reflecting our own innate qualities to help ourselves better understand our connection to all things. In this show, we’ll learn some of the natural language the animal kingdom is sharing with us by exploring the following questions: What are Animal Totems or Animal Spirit Guides? How do they work? Why use them in your daily life? Where can you find on-line resources and more information? In addition, your hosts, Mildred Lynn McDonald and Madonna MacInnis will provide an example of how they use Animal Totems in their own lives to gain a better perspective, understand inner conflicts, connect with Nature, and discern which course of action (or inaction) might be in their highest interest. Episode #33: What it means to HOLD SPACE for people with special guest HEATHER PLETT Many of us have heard the expression to "hold the space” for someone, but until now, I haven’t come across much information on what holding the space actually looks like, especially when caring for aloved one who is transitioning into the last stages of life. Enter Manitoba-based teacher, writer, coach, retreat host, and facilitator, HEATHER PLETT. When I read Heather’s blog, I realized that she was able to lovingly articulate key concepts about the gift of "holding space" gleaned through her own life experience, specifically, the passing of her mother. During our time together, Heather will explore eight life lessons that she has learned from the amazing people who have held the space for her. They include: 1. Giving people permission to trust their own intuition and wisdom. 2. Giving people only as much information as they can handle. 3. Not taking power away. 4. Keeping your own ego out of it. 5. Making people feel safe enough to fail. 6. Giving guidance and help with humility and thoughtfulness. 7. Creating a container for complex emotions, fear, trauma, etc. 8. Allowing people to make different decisions and have different experiences than you would. Thank you Heather for doing this beautiful work! "According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the total number of people with DEMENTIA worldwide in 2015 is estimated at 47.5 million. The total number of new cases of dementia each year worldwide is nearly 7.7 million, implying 1 new case every 4 seconds. The number of people with dementia is expected to increase to 75.6 million in 2030 and 135.5 million in 2050". Think about it. These are BIG numbers and most of us, in one way or another, will be impacted by dementia in our lifetime. To help us to help us understand what these numbers mean to us and our loves ones on a community level, we have invited CATHERINE SHEPHERD, Cape Breton - Education and Outreach, Alzheimer's Society of Nova Scotia, to the table. I first met Catherine about two months ago when my family was trying to deal with a loved one’s diagnosis of dementia. Quite honestly, we were afraid and looking for guidance and support. From the get go, Catherine stepped into the fire, met us where we were, and offered step-by-step guidance, knowledge and reassurance at a time when all three were in short supply. I was very touched by this timely gift (for she was a gift!) and decided to dedicate this show to helping her share a message of hope, coping and perspective for those on a life altering journey called "dementia". Thank you Catherine for doing this beautiful work!
