The NASA New Horizons spacecraft obtained intriguing images and data during it's trip through the Pluto system which will keep planetary scientists busy for years to come. Now the New Horizons has it's sights set on an object, a billion miles past Pluto, which is called 2014 MU69. It is too faint for all but the most powerful telescopes which is why the Hubble Space Telescope was systematically used to discover it.

The Kuiper belt, occasionally called the Edgeworth–Kuiper belt, is a circumstellar disc in the outer Solar System, extending from the orbit of Neptune to approximately 50 AU from the Sun. It is similar to the asteroid belt, but is far larger—20 times as wide and 20 to 200 times as massive.NOTE - With recent developments ; The distant Kuiper Belt object formerly known as 2014 MU69 – later known as Ultima Thule – has been renamed again. Following its Pluto encounter in 2015, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft was pushing on into the Kuiper Belt, aiming toward an object known originally as 2014 MU69, when space scientists and the public decided it needed a new name. Shortly before the New Horizons encounter on January 1, 2019, they chose the name Ultima Thule. Then a reporter at Newsweek pointed out that the Nazi party had used the phrase Ultima Thule to refer to the mythical homeland of the Aryan people. The term apparently remains in use by modern so-called alt-right groups. Now the object has a new name yet again. The name is now Arrokoth, which means sky in the Powhatan and Algonquian languages. The name was chosen based on the local Native American culture in Maryland, where the New Horizons mission control center is based. Arrokoth is roughly 19 miles long, or about 1/60th the diameter of Pluto. A wealth of data from New Horizons’ encounter with Arrokoth is still being sent back from the spacecraft to Earth for analysis. Scientists used New Horizons’ cameras to glimpse its strange, double-lobed shape, indicating a possible gentle collision of two objects long ago. Arrokoth also appears to be covered in methane or nitrogen ice, giving it a red tinge. Tuesday this week is the 50th anniversary of the second crewed lunar landing, Apollo 12. There were a number of unplanned events that occurred during the mission – like lightning strikes during launch – but one of the least spoken of is the tiny art gallery left on the moon called Moon Museum. A tiny ceramic wafer, .75x.5 inches, was etched with six artworks and attached to one of the legs of the lunar lander by a Northrup Grumman engineer who worked on that lander. The six artworks by Robert Rauchenberg(a line), David Novros(black square), John Chamberlain(circuitry template), Claes Oldenberg(geometric Mickey Mouse), Andy Warhol(initials) and Forrest Myers(CG intersecting pattern), were etched onto either 16 or 20 chips by an engineer at Bell labs. The project was coordinated by Myers who wanted to bring send the tiny piece to the moon with NASA’s approval. Myers tried repeatedly to get NASA’s approval. They never said ‘No’, but never said yes either. Turned out the Bell Labs engineer knew a NG employee working on the lander who was willing to affix the chip inside an access panel on one of the lander legs. Two days before launch, the still unnamed engineer sent a telegram to Myers confirming the chip was placed. The other 15 etched chips were given to people involved in this clandestine project. Fresh off its recent transit of the sun, Mercury is now visible in the Eastern pre-dawn sky from 5 – 6 a.m. along with the brighter Mars; Mercury is below, to the left. The moon drops through passing them Friday and Saturday. Venus now joins Jupiter and Saturn in the west 30 minutes after sunset. Watch Venus and Jupiter Sidle up to each other this week a little closer every day.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAProRNgFFM Host: Fraser Cain ( @fcain ) Special Guest: This week we welcome Dr. Rory Barnes to the Weekly Space Hangout. Rory is an assistant professor in the Department of Astronomy and Astrobiology Program at the University of Washington. He is also a member of NASA's Virtual Planetary Lab as well as the University of Washington's Big Data program. He studies the habitability of exoplanets with astrophysical, geophysical, and atmospheric computer models.   In August 2019, Rory released VPLanet, an open source, virtual planet simulator that links physical processes together and enables phenomena from one region of a planetary system to be tracked throughout its entire system. Eventually, it is hoped that this will help determine if an exoplanet is capable of supporting life.   VPLanet currently includes two modules which model the internal and magnetic evolution of terrestrial planets' characteristics. However, being open source and designed for easy growth, researchers are able to write additional physical modules which can be easily integrated with VPLanet in essentially a "plug & play" manner.   To learn more about Rory, his research, and other projects, visit: https://faculty.washington.edu/rkb9/ To learn about the other programs and scripts Rory has written, visit: https://github.com/RoryBarnes To read all about VPLanet, visit https://phys.org/news/2019-09-vplanet... Happy new year, welcome to the first episode of the year; we hope everyone is safe and enjoying themselves. This week we are bringing you stories about the new horizon project with pictures of MU69 or as it has been dubbed, the Ultimate Thule. This could be the perfect piece of real estate for those wanting to avoid those door to door sales people. We discuss the distances to it, the distance the New Horizons travels near the Ultimate Thule, the fact it travels in what is low earth orbit, also the lunar distance just for a laugh.Next up is a discussion about the new season of Stranger Things, and we don’t mean the crazy movie named Mad Max Fury Road either. Which Buck says was an ok movie but not a ‘Mad Max’ movie by any stretch of the imagination. We have a laugh of at the poster and the atomic wedgie of one of the kids, ah the eighties and bad fashion, thank goodness it is over. Also once again it appears that Hollywood is copying Australia instead of creating origional IP. It appears that ‘Stranger Things’ is copying the movie and series ‘Puberty Blues’ folks; that’s right you heard it here first. Then we talk about tattoos and gaming with the recent lawsuit regarding LeBron James and his appearance in various video games. We then wonder about who owns the artwork on your body. Also the levels of insanity, with people selling advertising on themselves by getting tattoos for organisations such as Golden Palace. Some of these people are all kinds of crazy with where they get these tattoos. Once again, happy new year and keep listening as we approach our first birthday in a few weeks.EPISODE NOTES:New Horizons space program- https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/12/nasa-spacecraft-readies-new-years-rendezvous-primordial-object-far-beyond-plutoStranger Things Season 3- https://au.ign.com/articles/2019/01/01/stranger-things-season-3-release-date-premiere-netflixTattoos and Game development- https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/27/style/tattoos-video-games.htmlGames currently playingBuck– Red Dead Redemption 2 - https://www.rockstargames.com/reddeadredemption2/Professor– Bandersnatch - https://www.netflix.com/title/80988062DJ– Injustice 2 - https://www.injustice.com/Other topics discussedFirst picture of Ultima Thule- https://imgur.com/wmY1LXdMore news about the New Horizons program- https://spacenews.com/new-horizons-ready-for-ultima-thule-flyby/How far is the Moon?- https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/moon-distance/en/Deep Space Network- https://eyes.nasa.gov/dsn/dsn.htmlMoons of Jupiter- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moons_of_JupiterSpace events that occurred in January- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_3- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_4Mars Polar Lander- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Polar_LanderHappy Feet 2 movie- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Feet_TwoMad Max the movie franchise- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mad_Max_(franchise)Stranger Things Season 3 poster- https://oyster.ignimgs.com/wordpress/stg.ign.com/2018/12/pasted-image-0.pngThe Runaways- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runaways_(TV_series)Puberty Blues- 2012 TV Series - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puberty_Blues_(TV_series)- Novel - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puberty_Blues_(novel)- 1981 movie - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puberty_BluesCensored tattoo from Madrid Art Tattoo- https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQFTD3f0_gJSUkNb2Me3ea89WA1VQAvpJc7BCAgylmHW5Av-vTgawHangover 2 Mike Tyson tattoo lawsuit- https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/warner-bros-settles-hangover-ii-203377Woman gets Golden Palace tattoo- https://www.casino.org/blog/did-womens-forehead-casino-tattoo-gamble-pay-off/Cat Stevens’ multiple lawsuits on various songs- https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20090504/1649054744.shtmlMen at Work Kookaburra riff lawsuit- https://www.abc.net.au/news/2010-02-04/men-at-work-plundered-kookaburra-riff-court/321624Controversial Red Dead Redemption 2 feature- https://www.sportskeeda.com/esports/red-dead-redemption-2-news-the-controversial-game-economy-of-red-dead-online-explainedCourt stops GTA cheating programs- https://www.kotaku.com.au/2018/08/court-blocks-maker-of-gta-online-cheating-programs-from-selling-them/Local airsoft field runs live action PUBG games- https://www.reddit.com/r/PUBATTLEGROUNDS/comments/7av8l1/my_local_airsoft_field_runs_pubg_games_regularly/Battle Royale - 2000 Japanese movie- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Royale_(film)Donald Trump’s hair meme- https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/donald-trumps-hair/photosTrapped in a Video Game trope- https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/discussion.php?id=5uwcwznf9eze3y1ffsasdrnaHoover Dam- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoover_DamPacific Rim 2013 movie connections- https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1663662/movieconnectionsShoutoutsDec 30 2018 – Don Lusk passed away - https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/don-lusk-dead-pinocchio-fantasia-charlie-brown-animator-was-105-11720271 Jan 1992 – Grace Hopper passed away - https://www.onthisday.com/people/grace-hopper1 Jan 1994 - Cesar Romero passed away - https://www.onthisday.com/people/cesar-romero2 Jan 2018 – “Mean” Gene Okerlund passed away - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_OkerlundGeneral Queeries Podcast- https://www.thatsnotcanonproductions.com/generalqueeriespodcast/Famous Birthdays1 Jan 1895 - J Edgar Hoover, American law enforcement administrator and the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Edgar_Hoover1 Jan 1912 - Kim Philby, British intelligence spy who worked as a double agent before defecting to the Soviet Union in 1963. On this issue of The Critical Hour, Dr. Wilmer Leon is joined by Dr. Clarence Lusane, an African American author, activist, lecturer and chair of the political science department at Howard University. We now have a divided government. The House controlled by Democrats, Senate and Executive Branch controlled by Republicans. Do you see legislative movement on the horizon? If so, what does this mean? Will these ethnic caucuses be relevant? Is the diversity quantitative vs. qualitative? I find it interesting, in the Rules Package that Speaker Pelosi has put forth, there's an AUSTERITY PROVISION OVER OBJECTIONS OF PROGRESSIVES. Pelosi has promised for months to restore the pay-go rule, which she instituted when first taking over the speaker's gavel in 2007. She ran into resistance from progressives, who believe that the rule would make it more difficult for Democrats to pass a host of liberal agenda items, from “Medicare for All” to a Green New Deal to tuition-free public college. Critics also argue that pay-go creates an unlevel playing field, where Republicans get to blow giant holes in the tax code, as they did with the 2017 tax cuts, while Democrats must pay fealty to the deficit. In today's New York Times there's a story entitled Sexism Claims From Bernie Sanders's 2016 Run: Paid Less, Treated Worse. In today's Washington Post there's a story entitled, Can Romney chart a course that has eluded other GOP critics of Trump? In our production meeting today we had this conversation, is mainstream media trying to fan the flames of intra-party conflict? The Sander's article opens with “In February 2016, Giulianna Di Lauro, a Latino outreach strategist for Senator Bernie Sanders's presidential operation, complained to her supervisor that she had been harassed by a campaign surrogate whom she drove to events ahead of the Democratic primary in Nevada… When she reported the incident to Bill Velazquez, a manager on the Latino outreach team, he told her, “I bet you would have liked it if he were younger,” according to her account and another woman who witnessed the exchange. Then he laughed.” In an interview Wednesday night on CNN, Mr. Sanders said he was proud of his 2016 campaign and attributed any missteps with staff members to the explosive growth that was sometimes overwhelming. “I'm not going to sit here and tell you that we did everything right, in terms of human resources,” he told Anderson Cooper.“I certainly apologize to any woman who felt she was not treated appropriately, and of course if I run we will do better the next time,” he said. Asked if he knew about the staff complaints, he said, “I was a little bit busy running around the country trying to make the case.”Now, on the Romney side, 2 days ago Romney wrote, “The president shapes the public character of the nation. Trump's character falls short.” What did Romney say in this piece that we don't know? Basically, “It is not that all of the president's policies have been misguided. He was right to align U.S. corporate taxes with those of global competitors, to strip out excessive regulations, to crack down on China's unfair trade practices, to reform criminal justice and to appoint conservative judges. These are policies mainstream Republicans have promoted for years. But policies and appointments are only a part of a presidency.” So, I read this to say, it's style over substance. Romney is the poster child for political opportunist. The article set off Washington's nonstop speculative machinery, with the conversation quickly pivoting to whether Romney might possibly challenge Trump for the GOP nomination in 2020 or make one more likely. The 2012 nominee tried to put to rest his intentions: “No, I'm not running again,” he told CNN's Jake Tapper, noting that his previous run did not end well, in contrast, he said, to Trump's victory in 2016.Chinese lunar rover landed on the dark side of the moon at 10:26 am on Thursday, Beijing time, marking the start of the first exploration of a place that cannot be seen from Earth. What does this mean geo-politically? Has China just sent a message to the US. Houston, do we have a problem? For those who may not know, unlike the near side of the moon that always faces the earth and offers many flat areas to touch down on, the far side, or dark side, is mountainous, rugged and posed until now a problem with communicating. This portion of the moon has never been reached by a man-made probe before. Beijing has been pouring billions into its lofty space program, whose technologies can easily be tapped by the Chinese military. Key goals include catapulting a permanent space station into orbit by 2022 and eventually sending men to the moon. Chris, am I overstating this when I say, Houston, do we have a problem? As the US and scientists from all over the world celebrated the New Horizons spacecraft sent back a photo of MU69, or “Ultima Thule” a billion miles past Pluto. The Chinese get to the dark side of the moon. What are the areas or technologies that surprise you about this? Do you see any linkage between the issue of China and the 5G issue we discussed a few weeks ago and this?GUESTS:Dr. Clarence Lusane - African American author, activist, lecturer and chair of the political science department at Howard University.Jackie Luqman — Co-editor-in-chief of Luqman Nation, and the co-hosts of the Facebook Livestream Coffee, Current Events & Politics.Chris Garaffa — Web developer and technologist.

Chasing Shadows [starts at 9:40]  Astronomy is a science that depends on watching things happen in the universe that we don’t have control over: supernovae, formation of stars, orbits of planets, and the spectacle of solar eclipses.  You can’t grab a distant galaxy and bring it into the lab for experiments, so astronomers have to depend on studying the light that fortuitously comes to them from distant objects.  However, by studying just that light, we can learn much about the objects in the universe and how they formed and evolved.  For example, studying solar eclipses have taught us about the corona of the sun and about general relativity.   To make those observations and measurements, scientists have to chase the shadow and set up their laboratory in remote places to catch it.  In this edition of How on Earth we talk with one such shadow-chaser: astronomer Dr. Marc Buie from the Boulder office of the Southwest Research Institute.  Marc organized a set of expeditions around the Earth to observe occultations of the Kuiper belt object 2014 MU69, which is is the next flyby target of the New Horizons space mission that flew past Pluto in July 2015.  He explains the science of occultations, what can be gleaned from these shadowy observations of 2014 MU69, and talks about planning for observation expeditions to remote places around the world. New data indicates MU69 may actually be less than 20 kilometres wide. Furthermore it may actually be a binary system or even a swarm of smaller bodies left from the time when the planets first formed. *First ever supermassive black hole binary discovered Astronomers have for the first time ever discovered two supermassive black holes orbiting each other in a single galaxy. The detection provides new clues about the process of galaxy mergers and galactic evolution. *Earth's magnetic field reveals one of its secrets Scientists have identified previously unknown patterns in the Earth's magnetic field which seems to evolve over time scales on the order of a thousand years. The pattern -- known as paleomagnetic secular variation -- provides new insights into how the planetary magnetic field works by adding a measure of predictability to changes in the field not previously known. *Russia’s busy launch schedule Russia has been making up for lost time – and missions – since last year’s grounding of its Proton Rocket with no less than six launches in recent months. Included in the manifest was a Soyuz flight carrying crew to the International Space Station and the launch of a top secret Russian military satellite. Here are the videos for the Soyuz launch story… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdS7xrP6xG8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8ykwb0X0m0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB4cbr9M5aE Subscribe, rate and review SpaceTime at all good podcasting apps…including iTunes, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Pocketcasts, Podbean, Radio Public, Tunein Radio, google play, etc. Help support SpaceTime : The SpaceTime with Stuart Gary merchandise shop.
