Witnessing the Northern Lights checks a bucket-list for many. The first time you see the sky erupt in waves of pulsing white, green, red, or even blue light makes lifelong memories. In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, Walt Lindala and Frida Waara talk with Astrophysics Graduate Student Ogetay Kayali from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. Ogetay shares not only why we seem to be experiencing the Northern Lights more frequently, but also how to better take advantage of the experience with our cameras.Key Takeaways: The northern lights are at their peak due to the solar maximum, a phenomenon that happens every 11 years, increasing the likelihood of bright auroras. The colors in the northern lights, ranging from green to red and purple, are caused by the interaction of solar particles with oxygen and nitrogen in the Earth's atmosphere. With advances in technology, it's easier than ever to capture the auroras on cameras, even smartphones, though understanding camera settings like ISO and exposure can enhance the quality of your photos. Dark skies are critical for viewing the northern lights, and the Lake Superior region offers excellent vantage points for experiencing this natural wonder away from city lights. The best time to see the lights is during winter months with longer nights, and checking the moon's phase can also help—new moons provide the darkest skies for optimal viewing.Quotes: "We are currently at solar maximum, so we are expecting lots of solar storms that hit the Earth and cause northern lights. That's pretty normal. Every 11 years that happens" – Ogetay Kayali "If you have a camera, first try to learn using it. If you have a mobile camera, go to the darkest place you can and use long exposures to collect more light." – Ogetay Kayali "Take that chance, even when the forecast looks cloudy...you've got to try it." – Ogetay KayaliResources: For daily astronomical insights and stunning celestial images, visit NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html). To learn more about designated dark sky parks and optimal stargazing locations, visit Dark Sky Parks near Lake Superior (https://darksky.org/places/keweenaw-michigan-dark-sky-park/). For more information about NPLSF, visit National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation (nplsf.org)Don't miss this captivating episode as Ogatai Kayali, an astrophysics graduate student, explains the science behind the Northern Lights and why we've been seeing them more frequently along Lake Superior. Tune in for an in-depth look at the solar cycles, photography tips, and how Lake Superior's dark skies provide some of the best stargazing opportunities in the world.

Welcome to Astronomy Daily for June 19, 2023. In today's episode, Hallie and Steve discuss various topics in astronomy. They start by mentioning the upcoming sky-watching events in the Northern Hemisphere, including the alignment of several planets, the moon, and Gemini. They provide details on where and when to observe these celestial phenomena. Next, they delve into a concerning study that reveals the impact of groundwater pumping on Earth's axis of spin. The displacement of a significant amount of water has caused a change in the planet's rotational pole. This finding raises questions about the long-term effects on climate change and seasonal weather patterns. Moving on, they highlight Space Force's efforts to partner with private companies and acquire new technologies through the newly opened office called Cosmic. This office aims to strengthen relationships between Space Force and the private sector to maintain space superiority and counter emerging threats. The hosts discuss the significance of this collaboration and the transition towards constellations of smaller, more expendable satellites. Lastly, they mention NASA's research on air taxi transportation and the development of a custom virtual reality flight simulator. This simulator aims to study passengers' physiological responses to various stimuli during air taxi flights. The data collected will help shape the design of electric air taxis and optimize passenger comfort. The episode concludes with a friendly farewell and reminders to tune in to upcoming episodes of Astronomy Daily and Space Nuts, their parent podcast. Listeners are encouraged to share their sky photographs and engage with the growing astronomy community. Overall, this episode covers a range of topics, including sky-watching events, the impact of groundwater pumping on Earth's axis, Space Force's collaboration with private companies, and NASA's research on air taxis.#astronomy #astronomynews #space #science

Friends as time grows near to the supposed disclosure of UFO's or UAP by our government I welcome back someone who is locked into one of the worlds greatest UFO cases ever. That's right Mike Heston Rogers will join me for not just serious talk but yes folks my friend Mike is one of the most likable people you're going to meet, and loves to laugh, and have a good time, and good laughs. So this will be like normal with Mike a fun time chatting with one of the crew members of the "Fire in the Sky" event itself, and as you know again the main reason that I got interested in the topic as a kid before I discovered Art Bell, and Radio that dealt with this subject, and after my first two sightings of UFO's as a kid. The events in Mike, and Travis life was instrumental in what I do today on my show, and why I didn't get scared in talking about my own experiences, and why I took to Skywatching. The image of the print will may blurry, but that's okay.Hold the second magnifying glass between your eye and the first magnifying glass.Move the second glass until the print comes into focus where you will see that the print is both larger and upside down.Have a friend or family member measure the distance between the two magnifying glasses and write the distance down.Cut a slot in the cardboard tube about one inch away from the front opening, but do not cut all the way through the tube. The slot should be wide enough to hold the first magnifying glass.Cut your second slot in the tube the same distance from the first slot as your friend or family member wrote down. This is where your second magnifying glass will go.Place the two magnifying glasses in their slots  and tape them in with the duct tapeLeave approximately 1 inch of tube behind the second magnifying glass and cut off any excess tube remaining.Check to see that it works by looking at the printed page. You may have to adjust slightly to get the exact distances between the two glasses right so that the image comes to a focus. We'll post a photo of Brian and Meredith's telescope on our Instagram and if you're having issues we found a lot of similar plans online with the google search "how to build a telescope at home" ranging from simple like ours to very detailed plans. Choose the one that's right for you and thanks to National Geographic Kids, Space.com, How Stuff Works, Instructables, and WikiHow for the idea.  You can find REACH on Twitter and Instagram or at http://www.ReachThePodcast.com REACH: A Space Podcast for Kids is a production of Soundsington Media committed to making quality programing for young audiences and the young at heart.
