This Day in Legal History: The Scottsboro CaseOn July 24, 1937, the state of Alabama dropped all charges against four of the nine young Black men known to history as the Scottsboro Boys—a small, belated measure of relief in one of the most notorious miscarriages of justice in American legal history, and a case that helped reshape constitutional criminal procedure. The nine, ranging in age from approximately 13 to 20, had been arrested after riding a freight train through Alabama in 1931 and falsely accused of raping two white women. Within two weeks, in a series of rushed trials before all-white juries, eight of them had been convicted and sentenced to death; the trial of the youngest, Roy Wright, ended in a mistrial when the jury could not agree on whether to impose death or life imprisonment.The extraordinary speed and unfairness of those proceedings produced two landmark Supreme Court decisions that still shape the rights of criminal defendants. In Powell v. Alabama in 1932, the Court held that the defendants had been denied due process because they had not received the timely and meaningful assistance of counsel needed to prepare their defense. The Court's holding was formally limited to capital cases involving indigent defendants incapable of adequately defending themselves, but it became a foundational step toward the broader right to appointed counsel later recognized in Gideon v. Wainwright. Then, in Norris v. Alabama in 1935, the Court overturned Clarence Norris's conviction because Alabama had systematically excluded qualified Black citizens from its jury rolls. Building on earlier equal-protection precedents, the Court made clear that a state could not accomplish through discriminatory administration what the Constitution prohibited it from doing expressly.The Scottsboro cases dragged on for years through retrials, reconvictions despite one accuser's recantation, appeals, and slow, partial releases. On July 24, 1937, Alabama dropped all charges against Willie Roberson, Olen Montgomery, Eugene Williams, and Roy Wright. Prosecutors expressly concluded that Roberson and Montgomery were not guilty; Williams and Wright were released principally because of their youth and the six years they had already spent imprisoned. The state continued prosecuting or imprisoning the remaining defendants.The significance of the Scottsboro saga is twofold: it exposed nationally how the Jim Crow justice system operated against Black defendants, and it forced the Supreme Court to give practical constitutional force to protections—meaningful representation by counsel and freedom from racially discriminatory jury selection—that we now consider basic. It is a reminder that some of the most important rights in American law were secured through the suffering of people who were themselves never fully given justice.Thomas Goldstein, one of the most prominent Supreme Court advocates of his generation and a co-founder of the widely read SCOTUSblog, is being sentenced today after a jury convicted him of tax evasion and mortgage fraud. Goldstein argued dozens of cases before the Supreme Court and built a celebrated appellate practice—but prosecutors showed the jury a hidden second life as an ultra-high-stakes poker player, in games running into the tens of millions of dollars. The jury found him guilty on 12 of 16 counts, including tax evasion, assisting in the preparation of false returns, willfully failing to pay taxes on time, and lying to mortgage lenders. The conduct is a case study in exactly the kind of sophisticated evasion I wrote about in Forbes this week: prosecutors said Goldstein concealed millions in poker winnings and losses, diverted his law firm's legal fees into personal accounts to cover gambling debts, and directed people to pay his creditors so the money never showed up as his income. That's not a wage earner whose taxes are withheld automatically—it's precisely the complex, hard-to-trace arrangement that takes real investigative resources to unwind. The Justice Department has asked for eight years in prison. The significance is a pointed reminder that the tax laws reach even the elite of the legal profession—and that when the government does devote the resources to untangle a sophisticated scheme, the accountability can be severe. This Day in Legal History: The Dodd-Frank ActOn July 21, 2010, President Barack Obama signed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, the most sweeping overhaul of American financial regulation since the New Deal. It was a direct response to the 2008 financial crisis—the collapse that wiped out trillions in household wealth, toppled storied institutions like Lehman Brothers, and required massive taxpayer bailouts to keep the banking system from failing entirely.Dodd-Frank tried to attack the crisis's root causes on several fronts at once. It created the Financial Stability Oversight Council to watch for systemic risks—the danger that one firm's failure could cascade through the whole economy—and gave regulators new “resolution authority” to wind down failing giants in an orderly way, an attempt to end the problem of banks being “too big to fail.” It imposed the Volcker Rule, restricting banks from making certain speculative bets with depositors' money. U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín issued a fourteen-day temporary restraining order, finding the deal “likely” violates antitrust law. Here's the framework. Antitrust law exists to preserve competition, and one of its central tools is blocking mergers that would concentrate too much market power in a single company. The states, led by California, sued on July 13 arguing that combining these two entertainment giants would create a media behemoth with the power to raise prices across film and television and to squeeze rivals. A temporary restraining order is exactly what it sounds like—a short-term freeze to preserve the status quo while the court takes a harder look; the “likely violates” language signals the states cleared the initial bar of showing they're reasonably likely to succeed. Gleznotājs Kaspars Zariņš uz sarunu aicinājis tēlnieku pāri Olgu Šilovu un Gļebu Panteļejevu, jo  12. jūnijā mākslas stacijā "Dubulti" tika atklāta Gļeba Panteļejeva jaundarbu izstāde "Monumenti", bet Olga Šilova šobrīd strādā pie izstādes "Virsmas spraigums", kas no 27. augusta būs apskatāma galerijā "Māksla XO". Tēlnieki Olga Šilova un Gļebs Panteļejevs ir viens no pazīstamākajiem radošajiem pāriem Latvijas mākslā. Viņu darbi sastopami gan publiskajā telpā, gan muzejos un privātkolekcijās, savukārt ikdienā abi ne tikai rada mākslu, bet arī pasniedz Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijā. Sarunā abi atklāj, kā iepazinās, kā sadzīvo konkurences apstākļos un kāpēc radošajā procesā alkohols nepalīdz. Liktenīgā satikšanās Mākslas akadēmijā Olga Šilova atceras, ka pirmoreiz Gļebu Panteļejevu satikusi, stājoties Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijā 17 gadu vecumā. Viņu pārsteigusi topošā tēlnieka pārliecība un prasmes. "Es viņam jautāju, kā viņš tik labi iemācījies zīmēt un veidot. Gļebs atbildēja: "Vajag daudz strādāt! " Toreiz nenoticēju – domāju, ka viņš kaut ko slēpj," smejoties atceras Olga Šilova. Pēc vairākiem gadiem, armijas dienesta un atkārtotas satikšanās akadēmijā, abi kļuva par pāri. Kopš studiju laikiem viņi strādā līdzās vienā darbnīcā. Idejas tiek slēptas līdz pēdējam brīdim Lai gan abi ir dzīvesbiedri, profesionālajā jomā viņi sevi sauc par konkurentiem. Piedaloties vienos un tajos pašos konkursos, mākslinieki apzināti izvairās apspriest savas ieceres. Pirmās nedēļas idejas tiek turētas noslēpumā, lai neietekmētu vienam otra domāšanu. "Kad ideja vēl tikai briest, mēs par konkrēto konkursu vispār nerunājam. Katrs vārās savā sulā," stāsta Olga Šilova. Savukārt Gļebs Panteļejevs uzsver, ka konkurence mākslā ir daudz plašāka par attiecībām ģimenē: "Faktiski mēs visi esam konkurenti. Mēs pat ar aizgājušajiem konkurējam!" Monumenti ietekmē cilvēku masas Gļebs Panteļejevs atzīst, ka tieši darbs pie publiskajiem objektiem un monumentiem devis sajūtu par profesijas nozīmīgumu: "Monumenti ietekmē cilvēku masas. Tā ir ļoti liela atbildība." Tikmēr Olga Šilova norāda, ka viņas profesionālajā biogrāfijā vairāk bijuši objekti un vides darbi, nevis tradicionāli pieminekļi. Abi piekrīt, ka publiskajā telpā izvietota skulptūra vienmēr kļūst par sabiedrības vērtējuma objektu. Radošais process un alkohols nav savienojami Runājot par darba ikdienu, abi tēlnieki ir vienisprātis – nopietns radošais darbs un alkohols nav savienojami. "Ja ir aktīvā radošā fāze, nekādā gadījumā to nevar savienot ar alkoholu!" uzsver Gļebs Panteļejevs. Savukārt Olga Šilova piebilst, ka izņēmums var būt mehāniski, meditatīvi darbi, kuros nav nepieciešama radoša koncentrēšanās. Māksla sākas ar spēju ieraudzīt Gļebs Panteļejevs neslēpj, ka idejas bieži rodas nevis pie rasējamā galda, bet nejaušos novērojumos. Viens no jaunākajiem darbiem tapis pēc tam, kad viņš studentu auditorijā uz galda pamanījis saburzītu konfektes papīrīti: "Es tajā ieraudzīju karavīru grupu ar karogu. No šī iespaida vēlāk radās bronzas darbs." Abi mākslinieki uzskata, ka radošuma pamatā ir spēja saglabāt atvērtu skatienu uz pasauli un nepazaudēt uztveres asumu. Kara sākums aptura radošumu Īpaši smags periods Gļebam Panteļejevam bijis pēc Krievijas pilna mēroga iebrukuma Ukrainā 2022. gada februārī: "Es vienkārši pārtraucu darbu. Nevarēju saprast, kā vispār tajā laikā var strādāt. Aptuveni trīs mēnešus man nebija nekādas vēlmes radīt." Darbam viņu atkal pievērsis draugs, kurš mudinājis neatmest iesāktās ieceres un turpināt darboties. Mākslinieks strādā plūsmā Abi tēlnieki piekrīt, ka profesionālam māksliniekam nav atsevišķu darbu – ir nepārtraukta plūsma, kurā viens darbs izriet no iepriekšējā. "Mākslinieka darbi ir kā ķēdes posmi. Svarīgi ir nepārtraukt šo ķēdi," saka Gļebs Panteļejevs. Tikām Olga Šilova uzskata, ka mākslas process ir kaut kas lielāks par pašu autoru: "Man liekas, ka es radu procesam. Mākslas process ir kaut kas tāds, ko no mums grib Dievs." Novēlējums radošajiem cilvēkiem Sarunas noslēgumā mākslinieki dalās ar padomu jaunajiem radošajiem cilvēkiem. Gļebs Panteļejevs aicina nepazaudēt spēju vērīgi vērot pasauli un ieraudzīt tajā neparasto: "Visu laiku jāasina sava pasaules uztveres antena." Deocamdată programul său de guvernare nu are un capitol dedicat Transilvaniei și nici maghiarilor din afara țării. Marșul lui de 300 de kilometri între Budapesta și Oradea de acum un an a fost exemplar în ceea ce a avut de arătat Magyar legat de Ardeal: că preferă naționalismul de tip civic, nu naționalismul iredentist. Poate că banii pentru Ardeal vor fi mai puțini, dar mai bine distribuiți și mai corect atribuiți. Bucureștiul nu a vrut să perturbe relația transfrontalieră dintre Budapesta și comunitatea maghiară din Transilvania, fiindcă România are o relație similară cu Republica Moldova, în care banii trimiși spre Chișinău nu au urmat întotdeauna canale oficiale, iar finanțările nu au fost mereu transparente.  Relația bilaterală româno-ungară va rămâne probabil la fel, cu tot cu aranjamentele neoficiale. În schimb, Peter Magyar va scoate la suprafață banii dedicați Transilvaniei, va avea o relație diferită cu UDMR și nu va ezita să-i pedepsească și să-i arate cu degetul pe cei care au participat la corupția din guvernarea Orban, chiar dacă sunt maghiari din România. Când a văzut că pierde teren, l-a transformat pe Soros în sperietoare națională.  Credeți că vor învăța ceva politicenii din România? Nu, PSD este captivul grupării populist-naționaliste (Olguța Vasilescu și soțul), Sorin Grindeanu este total defazat și inadecvat, analfabet în ce privește așteptările populației. AUR speră și speră, dar nu s-a suit pe val când ar fi avut ocazia și în curând, retorica sa va fi chiar împotriva trendului, comentează jurnalistul Alex Livadaru, autor fondator Republica. De fapt, toate aceste ţări vin să facă un business, şi mai puţin să dezvolte economic o zonă, o ţară cu banii lor. Au fost identificate situații în care același tip de microbuz electric (16+1 locuri) a fost achiziționat, în județe diferite, la valori semnificativ variabile — între un minim de 99.000 euro și un maxim de 263.000 de euro per unitate, fără modificări tehnice care să justifice diferențele. Olgu selle teema lõpetuseks lisatud, et Gorbatšovi ja Trumpi vahele on huvitavaid parallele vedanud Rootsi ajakirjanik Malcom Kyeyune ("Trump's Gorbachev moment" [2]).Keskustelu teise poole alguses (62. minut) viisin ma jutu briti ajaloolasele Simon Schamale (saate tunnuspildil paremal), kelle sulest on ilmunud suurepärane Prantsuse revolutsiooni lahkav raamat "Citizens". Minu mõtlemist on viimasel viieteistkümnel aastal olulisel määral mõjutanud tema 2010. aasta mais FT-s ilmunud artikkel "On the brink of a new age of rage". V některých starších domech bývá pěkná zima, i když mají topení. Těžko se vytápějí a nejvíc chladu jde od podlahy. V jednom takovém ve Žďáře nad Sázavou žije seniorka, paní Olga. Od Ježíška si proto přála něco teplého na tělo i na nohy. Navštívili jsme ji společně s dobrovolnicí Pavlínou, abychom předali vestu a domácí boty z teplé ovčí vlny, které si mohla hned rozbalit a vyzkoušet. Paní Olga nás přivítala s milým úsměvem.

Man prātā nāk vismaz divas – Jāņa Mediņa "Uguns un nakts" un Alfrēda Kalniņa "Baņuta", kuru liktenī kuģiem, jūrai un pat okeāniem bijusi itin nozīmīga loma. Pirmā kuģotāja 1919.gada rudenī bijusi "Baņuta", tomēr stāstu sākšu ar Jāni Mediņu un viņa "Uguni un nakti". Ar operas klavierizvilkumu kamiešos – un tas nav nekāds poētisms, bet skaudra realitāte, it īpaši ņemot vērā to, ka notis svērušas kādus 20 kilogramus – Mediņš kopā ar sievu Olgu līdz ar citiem latviešu strēlniekiem no Sarkanās armijas glābdamies, šķērso visu Sibīriju, līdz 1920.gada maijā beidzot sasniedz Vladivostoku, lai tālāk jau ar kuģiem dotos uz Curugas ostu Japānā. Tur viņus gaida okeāna tvaikoni Voroņeža – zem Anglijas karoga un ar argentīniešu kapteini. Jaunās Latvijas valsts valdība apmaksājusi mūsu strēlnieku mājupceļu.  Pirmā pieturvieta – Nagasaki, tālāk jau seko Singapūra, Kolombo Ceilonā, vētra Indijas okeānā, Sarkanā jūra, Suecas kanāls, Gibraltārs, spāņu vīna žvingulis Malagā, kuģošana gar Portugāles un Spānijas krastiem Atlantijas okeānā. Kad sasniegta Lielbritānija, kuģim Temzas dokos vajadzējis piemontēt mīnu ķērājus, jo Baltijas jūra vēl nebija pilnībā atmīnēta. Mediņš vēl pēc daudziem gadiem atcerējās – mīnu ķeramie izskatījās kā torpēdas, apmēram pusotra metra garumā, ar stipru stiepli priekšgalā, kas tad mīnu uztvertu un kādus desmit metrus no kuģa liktu tai sprāgt. Kad Dancigā uz kuģa uzkāpj locis – īsts jūrnieku puika ar žoķeni galvā, īsts "džonītis", kā saka Mediņš, un pamana visādam gadījumam sagatavotās glābšanas laivas, virves, signālraķetes un dzeramo ūdeni, "džonītis" kapteinim uzkliedz, ko velti baidot karavīrus un sievas ar bērniem. Nevienas mīnas jūrā vairs neesot, lai vācot visu nost, viņš nu atbildot par kuģi. Kad 3. oktobrī laimīgi tikuši līdz Liepājas kara ostai, četrus mēnešus ilgais un 23 000 kilometrus garais kuģojums no Vladivostokas bija galā. Ostā strēlniekus gaidījuši Latvijas karavīri ar orķestri un "Dievs, svētī Latviju!". Raudājuši visi. Un par operu – kaut vēlāk Mediņš pastāvējis uz to, ka viņa "Uguns un nakts" bijusi pabeigta vēl pirms Kalniņa "Baņutas", ir arī liecības, ka 1920. gada oktobrī tā līdz Rīgai nonākusi vēl tikai klavierizvilkumā. Tātad – bija padarām vēl viss lielais orķestrēšanas darbs. Bet "Baņuta"? "Baņuta" jau pirms mēnešiem četriem – maija beigās – bija izskanējusi uz Nacionālās operas skatuves, iemantodama pirmās latviešu nacionālās operas godu. Un izrādās, arī "Baņutas" liktenī savu lomu spēlējuši kuģi un kuģošana. Alfrēds Kalniņš "Baņutu" sācis rakstīt, atsaukdamies Jāņa Akuratera pamudinājumam jau 1918. gadā, un ļoti ražīgi to dara Liepājā arī tad, kad ir sākušās Neatkarības cīņas – vispirms pret sarkanajiem, tad fon der Golca armiju visbeidzot pret bermontiešiem. Kalniņš "Baņutu" komponē Liepājā, itin kā nemanīdams karastāvokli, komandanta stundu, teju pilsoņu kara apstākļos draudošo badu... Nu jā, pret to noturēties palīdz arī meitiņas Birutas ganītais vistu bars pašu mītnesvietas dārzā. Pāris mēnešus pēc tam, kad Latvijas pagaidu valdība jūnijā no dreifēšanas ar kuģi var atgriezties uz cietzemes – vispirms Liepājā, pēc tam jau Rīgā, arī Alfrēds Kalniņš saņem uzaicinājumu doties uz Rīgu un kļūt par Izglītības ministrijas Mākslas departamenta Mūzikas nodaļas vadītāju. Jūrasceļš ir vienīgais daudzmaz drošais, un tā nu septembra vidū, nospēlējis atvadu koncertu pie Svētās Annas baznīcas ērģelēm, Kalniņš ar ģimeni kāpj uz kuģa, lai dotos uz Rīgu. Tad – 1919. gadā – gan vēl jūrā bija arī mīnu lauki, un Liepājas avīzēs pēc kāda laika parādās ziņa, ka Kalniņa kuģis tiešām uzdūries mīnām un nogrimis. Par laimi, ziņu vajadzēja vien atsaukt. Izrādās – kuģim pa ceļam ievajadzējās remontu, un Kalniņi pāris dienas palika Ventspilī,  kur Alfrēds uz pat pamanījās sarīkot ērģeļkoncertu!  Tā nu no Liepājas līdz Rīgai Kalniņi kuģoja četras dienas. Tieši tad, kad viņi beidzot 8. oktobrī tiek līdz Rīgas ostai, sākas Bermonta-Avalova armijas uzbrukums Rīgai, arī gaisa uzlidojumi. Kuģim ar visiem Kalniņiem pavēl atgriezties jūrā. Tikai dienu vēlāk jau vēlā vakarā viņus pa galvu, pa kaklu izsēdina krastā, bet visa iedzīve un arī "Baņutas" partitūra (un arī tie bija pamatīgi saiņi!) atgriežas jūrā. Tā nu "Baņuta" un visa Kalniņu iedzīve kādu laiku dreifē pa līci, līdz beidzot tomēr kuģis atgriežas ostā. Kalniņš gan jau bija sadomājies no Rīgas braukt prom, jo viņam te galīgi nepatīk. Tomēr nu, kad "Baņuta" un mēbeles izkrautas krastā, būs vien jāpaliek. Jo jau ir nolemts "Baņutu" uzvest – 1920. gada pavasarī.  Kalniņu – kā jau ļoti atbildīgu cilvēku (un ļoti atbildīgu ierēdni) –, ļoti uztrauca operas direkcijas nodomi "Baņutas" iestudēšanai tērēt milzu naudas summas. Pēckara laikā pat spainis krāsas dekorācijām vai baķis auduma tērpiem maksāja baltu naudu (ja vispār bija atrodami). Kalniņam viss likās tik pārspīlēti dārgi un grezni, ka pārņēma bailes – vai "Baņuta" vispār ir tamlīdzīgu tēriņu vērta. Pirmizrāde notika 1920. gada 29. maijā. Operu uzņēmuši silti, klāt bija Latvijas prezidents Čakste, bijuši vainagi, puķes, veltes, tomēr pirmie gadi operai bijuši tik grūti, ka iespaidīgās Jāņa Kugas "Baņutas" dekorācijas pēc kāda laika tikušas "nomazgātas", lai uz audekliem varētu gleznot nākamās – citām operām vai baletiem. Jā, "Baņuta" tika iestudēta vien pusgadu pēc Neatkarības cīņu beigām, kad kara postažu Rīgā vēl varēja skaidri redzēt.

Dar să mi se spună care sunt soluţiile geniale, care corectează lucruri şi nu deranjează pe nimeni (News.ro) Premierul Ilie Bolojan afirmă că poate în orice moment să renunţe la funcţie, dar solicită să i se spună care sunt ”soluţiile geniale” prin care deficitul bugetar poate fi corectat, scrie News.ro. ”Orice partid consideră că Guvernul nu-şi face datoria are posibilitatea să depună moţiuni de cenzură şi să facă o majoritate în Parlament, în aşa fel încât, cu AUR, cu cine se poate, ca Guvernul să plece”, adaugă prim-ministrul. ”În administraţia locală din România, în majoritatea unităţilor administrative, cheltuielile de personal reprezintă între 60 şi 90%. Dacă vrei să faci ceva reduceri din total cheltuieli şi nu vrei să te atingi de personal, foarte bine, te duci la diferenţa care este foarte mică. Ce înseamnă asta? Înseamnă cheltuielile cu încălzirea şcolilor, cu iluminatul public. Asta vrem să facem? ”. Ilie Bolojan a anunţat că va ”insista şi pe partea de reduceri administrative” în administraţia centrală. Au foarte multe lucruri în comun” (Adevărul) Prevalența teoriilor conspirației și ascensiunea extremismului reprezintă fenomene îngrijorătoare în societatea românească contemporană, potrivit analizei lui Theodor Paleologu. (DW) Mizele conflictului din coaliția de guvernământ au legătură cu decredibilizarea premierului Ilie Bolojan, cu o restaurație similară celei din perioada Dragnea, cu bătălia pentru controlul instanțelor și parchetelor, avertizează jurnalista Sabina Fati, corespondent DW. Sorin Grindeanu are ambiții mai mari, vrea să fie ales, la Congresul din 7 noiembrie, președinte plin al PSD. Pentru a ajunge acolo, trebuie să-și protejeze oamenii mai bine decât a făcut-o în 2017 (când a adoptat Ordonanța 13, care anula infracțiunea de neglijență în serviciu, introducea pragul de 200.000 de lei pentru existența infracțiunii de abuz în serviciu și anula ideea de favorizare a făptuitorului în cazul în care un membru de familie îl proteja pe un altul. Sub presiunea străzii a renunțat în final la aceste idealuri pro-corupție).  Miza e în continuare controlul asupra Justiției. Ministrul de resort, Radu Marinescu, este omul trimis de primărița Craiovei, Olguța Vasilescu, devenită una din cele mai puternice figuri din partid. Ministrul Justiției este omul cheie din guvern care îi propune președintelui întreaga elită a parchetelor: procurorul general, procurorul șef al DNA și adjuncții lui, șeful Direcției de Investigare a Infracțiunilor de Criminalitate Organizată și Terorism (DIICOT) și adjuncții lui, plus șefii de secții. Anul viitor se fac noi propuneri. PSD vrea să controleze cât mai mult din această mare felie a magistraților, așa că încearcă să-i ajute, pentru ca, la rândul lor, să fie ajutat. Înalta Curte a făcut deja câțiva pași prietenoși spre PSD, în dosare importante, iar după respingerea legii la CCR, cei mai mulți procurori și judecători au ieșit din greva în care intraseră la sfârșitul lunii august.  Cu ce tinichele de coadă candidează Marcel Ciolacu la CJ Buzău: scandalul cu jeturile private Nordis, farmaciile și fotovoltaicele nepotului, afacerile protejatei, deficitul-record (G4Media) Marcel Ciolacu are o șansă mare să câștige în sfârșit la vot pe persoană fizică la CJ Buzău. Fostul premier PSD părea anulat politic de înfrângerea de la prezidențiale, de blatul cu George Simion, de scandalurile de corupție și de cel mai mare deficit bugetar din UE. Spre deosebire însă de colegii de coaliție Klaus Iohannis și Nicolae Ciucă, Ciolacu vrea cu orice preț să revină în prim-plan. Nu am văzut până acum la fostul premier nici un gest de regret ori penitență pentru la dezastrul politic și bugetar din 2024. Doar declarații care sfidează bunul simț. Ciolacu e în pole-position la alegerile din 7 decembrie pentru că nici un alt partid important nu și-a anunțat un candidat la șefia Consiliului Județean Buzău, un județ oricum dominat copios de PSD, care are 76% din primari. În plus, el a negociat în ultimele săptămâni cu mai multe figuri relevante din județ pentru a se asigura de susținerea lor sau măcar de non-combat, potrivit informațiilor G4Media. Iar sâmbătă, Ciolacu vrea să își asigure la o mare conferință de partid sprijinul primarilor PSD din județ. VIDEO „Patriarhia a aplicat un sistem privind bugetul cu care noi nu eram obișnuiți”. Cum a fost construită Catedrala Națională. În Elveția toate catedralele noastre sunt goale»”, povestește, într-un interviu pentru publicul HotNews, arhitectul Constantin Amâiei, cel care s-a ocupat de proiectul Catedralei Naționale. Cu câteva zile înainte de inaugurarea construcției monumentale începute în 2010, Constantin Amâiei dezvăluie detalii neștiute despre lucrările ale căror costuri se ridicau la începutul acestui an la 270 milioane de euro, potrivit Patriarhiei.   „Am avut și critici de la colegi arhitecți care spuneau că trebuia să facem o catedrală din secolul 21 cu sticlă și metal. Noi a considerat că e mai bine să fie o catedrală tradițională pentru că noi, ortodocșii, avem în mentalul colectiv o anumită formă a bisericii. Dacă o modificăm, nu o mai recunoaștem”, spune Constantin Amâiei.  Constantin Amâiei este din Bacău, membru al Ordinului Arhitecților. Este de asemenea, autorul Catedralei „Înălțarea Domnului” din Bacău. Catedrala Națională sau a „Mântuirii Neamului” va fi inaugurată în 26 octombrie, după mai bine de 15 ani de la începerea lucrărilor. La eveniment va fi prezent și Patriarhul Bartolomeu I al Constantinopolului. De asemenea, sunt așteptați mii de credincioși din toată țara.

Foarte apreciat ca autor de literatură pentru copii, mai ales pentru seria de volume cu Olguța, Alex Moldovan a publicat recent un surprinzător volum de poezie. „Stabilizatori de stare” se numește și a apărut la OMG Publishing. Este povestea unui tată de copil cu ADHD. O poveste scrisă simplu, de fapt cu acea simplitate, greu de obținut în literatură, care vine după un proces de sinteză, de reducere la esență. Și e scrisă cu o precizie, cu o ironie și o autoironie care mustesc de durere. Relația cu ceilalți – vecini, rude, oameni oarecare – și ciocnirea cu ei pe tema neurodivergenței e o constantă a cărții. De parcă nu erau de ajuns suferințele unui copil cu ADHD, el și familia lui mai au de înfruntat și prejudecățile unei societăți ignorante dar gata să dea sfaturi nesolicitate. Am vorbit cu Alex Moldovan despre cartea lui de poezie și formula stilistică pe care a găsit-o dar și despre literatura pentru copii și succesul ei astăzi. Alex Moldovan: „Sînt un fan vechi al scrisului concis, al celor mai scurte forme de literatură. (...) În cazul volumului de poezie, n-a fost implicată doar o necesitate stilistică, cît mai degrabă o necesitate personală. Mi s-a părut că, punînd o oarecare distanță între mine și text, pot fi puțin mai lucid, mai obiectiv. În carte eu vorbesc despre mine la persoana a treia. Și ăsta a fost încă unul dintre mijloacele pe care le-am folosit tocmai pentru a pune puțină distanță și a pune lucrurile într-o perspectivă. (...) Am vrut să scriu despre relația mea nu cu fiul meu, ci cu această tulburare pe care o are el, care se numește ADHD și care ne-a făcut viața grea și ne-a dat mari bătăi de cap.”Sînt cîteva poeme care încep cu „pe vremea noastră” și care decupează, în clișeele bine cunoscute, părerea celorlalți, adesea ignoranți, și sfaturile lor nesolicitate, care aduc și mai multă durere familiei unui copil neurodivergent. Alex Moldovan: „Exista o stigmă aplicată tulburărilor de tot felul la noi. În spațiul public proliferează oamenii care se pricep la toate, mai ales la medicină, cu atît mai mult cu cît au terminat o facultate de electronică sau construcții. Ăsta e-un laitmotiv al exprimărilor legate de boală și tulburări: «ADHD-ul nu exista pe vremea mea». Am auzit-o de la oameni super învățați, de la prieteni de-ai mei, pînă la oameni pe care nu-i cunosc și care nu ar avea nici un motiv să se pronunțe pe tema asta. Pentru că nu-i musai să vorbim despre absolut orice există pe lume, mai ales dacă nu ne pricepem. Lumea are impresia că această tulburare, ADHD-ul, nu exista pe vremea noastră. Ba exista, doar că nu era încă documentată, nu exista acest nume, ADHD sau ADD, n-o să intru în detalii tehnice, că nici nu le stăpînesc foarte bine. Dar exista în fiecare clasă acel copil mai altfel, mai retras sau mai agitat, care, de obicei, lua tot blamul din lume și care avea, probabil, chestia asta. Eu am foarte multe întîlniri cu cititorii mei elevi, prin școli, și deja pot să recunosc de la prima privire elevul care este în zona asta. Și de multe ori doamnele învățătoare sau profesoare îmi confirmă, într-un fel sau altul. His dissents remain a blueprint for principled judging, reminding us that sometimes the most enduring legal influence comes not from prevailing, but from refusing to go along.In a massive trial that began this week in London's High Court, over 1.6 million claimants are suing several major carmakers—including Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Nissan, Renault, Peugeot, and Citroën—over allegations that they used illegal “defeat devices” to cheat diesel emissions tests. The lawsuit, one of the largest in UK legal history, follows in the wake of Volkswagen's 2015 “dieselgate” scandal and targets vehicles manufactured between 2012 and 2017.Claimants argue that these manufacturers deliberately programmed cars to meet legal nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions standards only under lab testing, while on-the-road emissions were allegedly up to 12 times higher—harming the environment and misleading consumers. Moorer imposed a $5,000 sanction on James A. Johnson, a court-appointed criminal defense attorney, who filed a motion containing fabricated citations. The judge noted that Johnson used a Microsoft Word plugin called Ghostwriter Legal and submitted the motion during a holiday weekend while caring for a relative, but emphasized that such explanations do not excuse the lack of basic diligence. He was also ordered to complete a CLE course on responsible AI use, with the judge citing his failure to stay informed about relevant legal technologies as a violation of professional conduct rules.Fake AI Citations Produce Fines for California, Alabama LawyersIn my column for Bloomberg this week, I examine the property rights implications at the heart of Pung v. Isabella County, a case the US Supreme Court has agreed to hear. I argue that when the government seizes and sells property for unpaid taxes, “just compensation” shouldn't be defined by whatever price the property fetches at a government-run auction. That process—entirely designed and controlled by local officials—often prioritizes administrative efficiency over fair market value, turning tax sales into what I describe as “clearance rack” events.The problem is structural. Local treasurers are incentivized to close the books quickly rather than ensure former owners recover equity. That means the government may undersell a home, pay itself the back taxes, and call it a day—leaving the former owner uncompensated for the true value of what they lost. Worse, when courts treat the auction price as constitutionally adequate, they allow the taker to set the value of what it took.I draw a comparison to Tyler v. Hennepin County, where the Court ruled the government can't pocket surplus proceeds from a tax sale. Pung asks the natural follow-up: what rules apply when determining how much surplus exists? If courts accept fire-sale auction prices as “just compensation,” they effectively endorse an end-run around the Fifth Amendment.As a compromise, I propose a clear rule: auction prices should only be presumed fair if they fall within 10% of an appraised value. Outside that range, the burden should shift to the government to prove the sale was legitimate. After all, if local governments want the legitimacy of a market sale, they need to run a sale that looks like one. Otherwise, taxpayers are left holding the bag—punished not for failing to pay taxes, but for the government's indifference to recovering real value from their property. This is a public episode. Learnovate has launched a Work Ready Graduate Programme (WRGP) to help companies in Ireland deploy state-of-the-art learning technology solutions. The programme places graduates with Learnovate member companies for 12 months where they receive real-world work experience in the learning technology sector. The graduates work within a partner company on a project focused on, or involving, a learning technology solution while being mentored and supported by senior researchers at the Learnovate Centre. Learnovate is the leading global future of work and learning research hub based in Trinity College Dublin. This is the first year Learnovate has run the Work Ready Graduate Programme. Funded from 50% to 70% by Enterprise Ireland, the programme currently has six graduates working for companies including ALPACA; Akari; Adaptemy; Hibernia and SkillsVista. Learnovate is now actively recruiting eight new graduates for Year 2 of this programme, with a closing date of Wednesday, 31 July, 2024. To be eligible, candidates are required to have a minimum of a level 8 degree in a relevant field and an interest in Education, User and Learner Experience, Learning Technologies, and/or Instructional Design. María Olguín Mesina es chilena, aunque ha vivido la mayor parte de su vida en España. Nació en el seno de una familia de artistas, los componentes del grupo musical «Valiván», que busca catequizar a través de la música. Actualmente María se dedica a dibujar. Aunque también es profesional en cámaras, escenografías, dobladora de personajes y cantante. Todo lo que hace, lo aprovecha para poder acercar a otros a Dios. Eso es lo que ha recibido de sus padres y, desde que ella tuvo un encuentro personal con el Señor, es lo que quiere transmitir a todo el mundo: el amor de Dios.

Ama los libros y en 2020 se animó a mostrar su pasatiempo favorito en redes sociales, ella es Guada (Casta) Castagnola, BookToker y estudiante de Ciencia Política en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, quien además compartió sus gustos preferidos: leer comedias románticas y ser fundamentalista de la literatura nacional, especialmente de Mariana Enríquez. “Ser BookToker es compartir reseñas y hablar de libros en TikTok, compartiendo la cultura del libro por las redes a un público que quizás no lo tiene tan presente”, expresó y agregó: “La Feria del Libro es el momento para explorar por todo lo que uno quiere”. Sobre qué es la moda, cómo encajar en el mundo del glamour y aportar al mismo, Paula Guardia Bourdin, conocida por su Revista Pola (@revistapola en redes), habló de lo que significa ser una influencer en el mundo de la moda. “Yo veía a la moda como algo distante, brillante y europeo, geográficamente lejos, es por eso que busqué formas de aportar a la moda lo que ella me había aportado a mí. Es algo muy interesante formar parte porque la moda es una herramienta super poderosa, así como las redes sociales.
